Attaining Divorce Records

July 3rd, 2009 | by admin |

Every state has different requirements for finding divorce records.  There are some that will give free divorce record information while others may charge a small fee to access the information.  There are many different websites that will help users to search for divorce records, some of which will also charge a small fee for the use of their database to search for the information. These divorce records are part of public information in view of the fact that the divorce proceedings have to be authorized by the court.  There is a lot of paperwork that is required to get the divorce and all of that work is a matter of public record.

Divorce Records: Free or Fee

Usually, states that offer free divorce recordsare those that have a more comprehensive online database of records. With online database people have search capabilities, that makes finding records easy and without taking services of an employee so the state is more likely to offer the record information for free.  In this way individuals can find out the basic information about the divorce without spending any money on the endeavor.  There are some search websites on the internet that claim to have better search capabilities than the free sites also, but this is usually not the case, in addition to the fact that the records have to be found through the state or county database ultimately anyway.

Usually, the times that there are fees for the access of divorce recordsis when the agency is too small to have an online database, or the database is incomplete at the present time.  This requires that an employee look up the records for the individual which takes up their time and costs the government money.  When this is the case, there is usually a small fee that is required to obtain the information. Other cases when there is a fee for the divorce records is when the individual needs to obtain verified or certified divorce records to prove the divorce.  In this case, it also takes the government time and money to produce these legal documents and to send them to the individual, so the government will usually charge some sort of a fee to produce the records.

Since technology is advancing all the time, more and more divorce records will be available for free, unless the individual needs hard copy, documented proof for some reason.  There are other records that are also available through these databases, such as marriage records, birth and death records and many others.
