There are numerous advantages of commercial software in your home based business. This is especially true if you experiment with trial ware, demo ware, and even shareware. When you own and operate a home based business, every single minute counts. It is important to find resources that can assist you in time management, preserving energy, and increasing your overall productivity and efficiency. It may take several tries before you are able to find a shareware or other type of software program that you like, but once you find it, you are sure to be glad that you did! Here, you will learn about some of the advantages of commercial software in your home based business.

The first benefit of using software that is designed for the home business from the internet is that you have a large selection to choose from. There are many software directories that offer hundreds to thousands of different types of programs that you can use to increase the overall efficiency of your home based work endeavors. These programs have been developed by individuals who have experience of some sort in the business environment. You can discover virtually all types of shareware, trial ware, and demo ware that can prove to be highly effective!

The next advantage when it comes to commercial software for your home based business is that you can experiment with the software prior to making a commitment to purchase. You should know and understand that not all software will prove to be a type that you can use. Many are too basic, while others are too complicated. Many have too few features while others have exactly what you will need. There are some that will be too costly, while others have a decent price tag attached to them. This is why it is important to have the ability to play around with the software prior to purchasing. Now, you can discover which types of shareware will work for you and which types will serve absolutely no purpose at all!

The next advantage to implementing the use of commercial software is that it can completely automate your home based business. Now, you may be wondering what this means. I mean “automating” is a really weird term when it comes to business, but it is actually a very relevant term that you should seriously attempt to work towards. Automating the home based business means that you basically put it on a type of “auto pilot” where you let it work for you. This is a completely awesome method of allowing you to have more time for all of those other business endeavors that you have. You may want to spend time in advertising, creating an article marketing campaign, and even networking. These commercial software types in the form of shareware will allow you to do just that!

There are a number of benefits associated with commercial software. You can experiment with this type of software in the form of freeware, shareware, demo ware, trial ware, and more!

There are many benefits of freeware in the homeschool classroom. My husband and I have been homeschooling our boys since the day that they started kindergarten and finding tools and resources that can assist us in the educational endeavors of our children are extremely important to us. This is especially true when it comes to educational software, teaching scripts, and even freeware that can be found online that teaches important concepts, lessons, and reinforce the skills that are necessary to the overall educational experience. Here, I will share with you some benefits of freeware in the homeschool classroom.

One of the first benefits of freeware, educational software, and teaching scripts online is that they are so convenient. If you are a homeschool parent, you know how limited your time is. Between creating lesson plans, teaching those lessons, field trips, experiments, chores, and work, it is often difficult to run to the bookstore or the library in order to retrieve information that will supplement the educational topics that your little ones are covering. However, with freeware, you can find what you need, when you need it most. I have even been lucky enough to stumble upon some websites that are nothing but freeware software programs. I am pretty sure that this is called a “freeware directory” or maybe a “software directory” but these websites are tops!

The next advantage to using a freeware script in the homeschool environment is that it is, well, free! Now, I am not sure what kind of arrangements that you have when it comes to your finances, but my husband and I work from home so that we can be here at all times for our children. We believe, as parents, it is our responsibility to facilitate the household and take responsibility for our kids. Working at home is a real challenge. We must carefully guard our finances. While it is true that we have managed to work up quite a bit of savings, it is due to the fact that we manage our money well and take full advantage of resources and tools that are really inexpensive or free! By using this type of software, you do not have to go out and buy the program, and you can put that extra money towards other things that your family needs.

When using educational freeware software scripts that can be found online, you can experience the benefit of having a large variety of programs! You can find games and printables that your children can play in their free time. You may even find some that you can enjoy! You can also discover time management and lesson plan tools that you can implement day to day in the homeschool classroom. You can also find dictionary software, encyclopedias, and even large collections of books that you can use to teach from, or your homeschooled children can use to enhance their knowledge. The possibilities are virtually endless when it comes to the variety that is offered by all of those directory type websites that offer free software scripts and programs!

As you can see, there are many different benefits associated with the use of freeware in the homeschool classroom.

By Paul McDonald

Chances are good that you'’ll get infected with spyware - approximately 9 out of every 10 Internet users will get infected. Yet free spyware removal is all the rage these days, even though free tools will never completely remove spyware from your computer and they certainly won'’t protect you from future infections.

Here are 3 reasons why free antispyware software isn'’t even worth the free price tag:

1. Free tools do not scan your computer against a spyware definitions database.

This is probably the single most important feature you should look for when deciding what spyware remover to use. This is because of the dynamic nature of spyware today - it is constantly downloading new files and applications and therefore you need robust antispyware software that scans your computer against a database which is updated frequently to protect against zero day threats. Free tools cannot allocate resources to create and maintain a database of this nature because they are, after all, free.

2. Most of the time, free spyware removers only offer you limited removal capabilities

This is nothing more than a marketing ploy that has been used for years - offer the stripped down freebie in an attempt to lure you to buy the full product. Lab tests have proven that free spyware tools only remove between 50% - 70%of spyware infections so if you come to rely only on free software, you'’ll be constantly fighting the spyware battle. My advice is to skip the freebies altogether and instead you can usually scan your computer for free with full spyware software versions to determine if an infection does in fact exist, and if it does you can then purchase the software which will allow you to go ahead and clean the infections.

3. Limited support

Most of the time, you get very little if any support from the manufacturer of the free spyware remover. If you are lucky, you might be able to reference an online list of FAQs or a knowledgebase, but more often you are left to try and sift through any number of spyware and virus related forums or online groups and you might find someone who can help you should you need it - but that is highly unlikely. You are much better off spending $30 to get antispyware software for which you can access a team of technical support specialists to assist you.

All things considered, if you suspect you have been infected with spyware you are ultimately facing two choices - you can rely on free spyware removal that doesn'’t scan against an up to date spyware definitions database, has limited removal capabilities, and doesn'’t offer any type of support or you can skip dinner at McDonald’’s for one night and get yourself a spyware remover that will completely clean your computer and will also keep your computer protected for years to come.

Find out what the best spyware removal tool is that will get rid of all your spyware infections and keep your computer free of spyware for good.
If you get infected with Trojan Vundo, removal of it often becomes a very difficult task. You will probably find that a lot of people will suggest that you can get rid of it by downloading and running VundoFix, but does it really work? You might be surprised to learn the truth.

Vundo is one the most common spyware infections making its rounds onto computers all over the world, and it is also one of the most difficult to get rid of. It consists of a Trojan downloader that will download and display popup advertisements over and over again but it has also been known to download and install more malicious files that can cause much more harm to your computer. If you suspect you are infected with this pesky spyware, what should you do?

Many people will tell you (most of which are unqualified to be offering spyware removal advice) that you can do any combination of the following things - install and run Search and Destroy or Ad-Aware, and if that doesn'’t fix it there is a tool written specifically to remove Vundo called VundoFix that is supposed to do the trick if the others fail.

The only problem with this type of advice is that it never works.

Go ahead and check your favorite spyware or security forum or group and look and see if anybody has successfully completely removed Vundo using any or all of the above recommendations. I guarantee you will not find one. You will find someone who thinks he may have gotten rid of it, but lab tests have proven time and time again that simple free spyware removers and Vundofix do not completely eliminate this frustrating Trojan downloader because they cannot stay current with its dynamic nature - it is constantly changing and downloading new files so you'’ll simply be left fighting a never ending battle.

What you need is a spyware removal tool that does 2 things:

1. Is proactive in scanning your computer with real time protection

2. Scans your computer against a spyware definitions database that is frequently updated

Using antispyware software that does not incorporate these two crucial features will only prolong the agony you are experiencing trying to completely rid your computer of Vundo.

So if you get infected with it or suspect you might be infected with it, remember that Trojan Vundo removal can be one of the most difficult tasks you partake in, unless you follow my advice and use a spyware remover with the two features listed above - you'’ll be glad you did.

Let’’s face it - if you own a computer you probably will get infected with spyware at some point. In fact, industry experts estimate that over 90% of all Internet users will get infected with spyware. But there is one very important thing you can do to get rid of spyware forever, and that is invest in top of the line antispyware software.

I can predict with probably about 95% certainty what happens to most Internet users with regards to getting a spyware infection and then trying to clean it from their computer.

First, more than likely you are not currently running any antispyware software on your computer and if you are, chances are that it is something that you downloaded for free which means that it really isn'’t that effective anyway so right off the bat you are asking to be infected with spyware.

Next, you'’re probably one of the majority of people who have downloaded something free off of the internet - be it either music or movies from a sharing network such as Kazaa or Limewire or some type of shareware or freeware software. So not only are you asking to be infected by not running antispyware software, but by downloading freebies off the internet without that protection you have increased the likelihood that you will get infected by spyware by over 300%.

Last, when you do get infected, you'’ll most likely get on the Internet and try to find some type of free spyware removal tool (if you aren'’t using one already) which does a really poor job of detecting spyware so you might end up cleaning some of the infected files off of your computer but you will never be completely clean if you are using free antispyware software.

So at this piont, even though you may have cleaned some spyware off of your computer you'’ll not really be much better off than when you didn'’t run any software at all. Also, I guarantee that you'’ll get infected again and over time the amount of spyware that cannot be removed by the free software will continue to grow until it completely takes over your computer.

However, if you are one of those people who are just plain frustrated of having to deal with spyware infections on a regular basis and sick of trying to work on a computer that runs painfully slow, then here is the most crucial thing you can do today that will get rid of your spyware headache forever -

Go right now and spend the measly $30 to get a proven and effective spyware remover that will completely clean your computer of spyware and keep it that way. It is absolutely worth the small investment in software to protect a much bigger investment - your computer.

The only other question you need to have answered now is - what is the absolute best spyware removal tool available?

About The Author

By Musa Aykac

There are so many software companies popping up on the internet these days, but who can you really trust? You should always remember that if something sounds too good to be true than it probably is. What I mean by this is we all get the various emails saying “We offer the cheapest software deals”, so you find it quite interesting and decide to visit the site in question. Your surprised to see that the prices they stated in the emails are true, but is this the moment the actual scam starts? Well lets take a look.

A few of the if its too good to be true warnings are as follows, firstly if they are offering lower prices that most of the reputable online retailers then there must be something dodgy, you have to think to yourself if they can do it why cant the big online retailers? Secondly if they do not supply you with a full registration number for your product, this could be one of the biggest giveaways as most products these days would require a code of some sort. They may be trying to sell you a cracked or nulled version of a piece of software. Finally you should beware if they do not supply readmes or manuals with the product, any suitable software company would have no problem supplying this sort of information.

If you are still thinking to yourself, well I am just going to buy the software as I wont be losing much its just so cheap, then you would probably be making one of the worst decisions of your life. There are a lot of reasons why people sell cheap software and most of them are bad, we will take a look at a few. Firstly is quite a big one whereas if you are entering your bank or credit card details you are potentially handing this over to a fraudster, who will probably end up emptying your bank account. Next you should beware of nulled or hacked software as this can also potentially contain viruses or spy ware which can collect all of your personal details. And finally if the software is illegal you could end up being prosecuted or fined large amounts.

So to save yourself from all of the aggravation that cheap software can bring, you should always stick to buying from reputable firms that have been around for a while and stay away from companies which have only been formed for a few months.

So you have taken the first step in creating your website, you have decided that you want to easily maintain your site and wondering what is the best solution.

By Musa Aykac

So you have taken the first step in creating your website, you have decided that you want to easily maintain your site and wondering what is the best solution. Well I can tell you now that it comes in the form of content management systems or also known as CMS.

A CMS system is a very complex piece of software which has the power to make your site a one click solution, meaning you can hold, organize and edit any content on your website with ease. You can also edit the design on most CMS systems with the easy to use interfaces. With a content management system you can create any sort of site starting from a forum to full ecommerce store.

These days there are various types of open source platforms, meaning free and fully manageable from Pligg which is a powerful user generated CMS system, to Drupal, Joomla and Mamba. So are you still having trouble with the best content management system to choose for your company? Then Read on.

Firstly you must consider what the purpose of your CMS will be used for. What is your strategy and your goal? Do you want to build a community, a store or a web site that is news driven? Sometimes although the free open source scripts offer a good solution, most of them maybe full of bugs which can potentially bring your site to a halt.

The solution for this would be to get yourself one of the paid and customizable solutions which are guaranteed to come fully supported and bug free. If you have a larger budget you can also consider getting yourself a custom unique script built for your site. This way it will be harder for your competitors to match your uniqueness aswell as it being easier for yourself to edit any aspect of the system as it will be specifically designed for your preferences.

So finally a tip to remember when looking to create your website, is keep in mind how you are going to market yourself. Meaning if you are looking for global domination in your niche, you must obtain a system that will be kind on your server and will be able to handle a handful of users. Too many times I have seen sites get there development wrong from the start and when this happens there is nothing else to expect apart from failure.

Being able to take your computer with you is the main reason to have a laptop, but you need to make sure that you have a computer case that is functional, protective and sturdy.

By Jon Kelly

Computers are now extremely flexible pieces of equipment that are smaller and lighter than ever. Capable of going almost anywhere you go, laptop computers can now also connect to the Internet at any of the numerous Internet cafes in most cities and airports. Being able to take your computer with you is the main reason to have a laptop, but you need to make sure that you have a computer case that is functional, protective and sturdy.

The most important consideration when choosing a computer case is how well the case suits the type of computer you own. Some types of laptop computers are extremely small and light, which would cause them to slide around inside a larger computer case. Conversely, a heavier computer will require a carrying case with sturdy straps that are wide enough to distribute the weight comfortably.

For trips when you will be carrying your computer for a long time or when you need your hands free, you might want to consider a backpack computer case. Like any computer case, a backpack computer carrying case should be the right size for your computer and provide enough cushioning to prevent damage if the computer is bumped or jostled. There should also be some degree of water resistance to protect your computer and other electronic components from rain or spilled beverages.

The right backpack will have a good fit so that the computer does not shift its weight or bump while you are walking. The weight should be distributed so that it does not cause any strain on your neck and back, and you should be able to remove the backpack without a struggle.

If you are accustomed to carrying a computer case in your hand or over your shoulder, you may find that a backpack causes fewer problems and will be less likely to induce muscle strains. The uneven distribution of weight caused by carrying a computer on one side of your body can cause muscle tension and posture problems over time.

To get the best results from a computer backpack, make sure that the weight of the computer remains centered on your back when you move around and check to make sure that you can put the backpack on and take it off without too much exertion.

While investigating your options for a computer case backpack, you may find certain features that make some designs more appropriate for your use. For example, if you will be using your backpack computer case to transport your computer between home and work or between various work sites, you may want a case that has multiple flaps and pockets so that it can double as a briefcase or personal organizer.

Any items that you will not need while you are in transit can be stored in the backpack computer case, including papers, CD-ROMs, flash drives and power cords. You might want to select a backpack that has a special pocket for a cell phone but, before buying a case with this feature, be sure that you are able to reach the pocket easily while wearing the backpack so that you are not forced to remove the backpack every time your phone rings.

One of their newest creations is the MacBook. This product specifically was made to replace the iBook G4 series, and was released in 2006.

By Kristi Ambrose

Apple is constantly coming out with the newest technology including media players, mp3 players, and smart phones. One of their newest creations is the MacBook. This product specifically was made to replace the iBook G4 series, and was released in 2006. Since then there have been several revisions to the MacBook as well as several different “generations.” This laptop is made especially for mac users obviously, but there are other people that have been PC users their entire lives and have bought into the Mac family. I'’m not sure I would buy a mac only because I'’m a PC girl at heart, but I just might reconsider it after all the hype Apple has received! The MacBook family comprises of several different versions. Thus far the newest and most updated MacBook was released in 2008 and uses a GM965 chip with Intel’’s x3100 graphics.

The following MacBooks are the different versions available to the consumers:

MacBook -
Consumer Notebook
13.3″ screen with polycarbonate casings

MacBook Air -
13.3″ wide screen LED display

Ultralight Notebook -
13.3″ screen with aluminum casings

Professional Level Notebook -
15.4″ or 17″ screens with aluminum casings

Several different “options” are included with the Macs including iTunes, iWork, Customizations, iCal, iChat, etc. These products must be expensive if they offer all this right? Wrong! In fact, truth be told, if you go ahead and buy any of the Macs off Apple, then yes you will pay full price. But if you'’re like every other person, you will want to find the best price even if it doesn'’t come straight from the company that makes them. The best thing you can do is try places like EBay and Amazon. Hey listen, just because it’’s from EBay or Amazon or some other auction site, doesn'’t mean you are going to receive a cheap item. All this means is you will be saving yourself hundreds of dollars, and who doesn'’t LOVE to save money?!?

Looking at the MacBook on Apple and then comparing it to one found on EBay (which is brand new, in the box, everything included) the price is quite different. MacBook on Apple is about $1,099 and on Ebay the lowest price is around $500. Now that is something you absolutely cannot beat. Again, just because you buy it on Ebay doesn'’t mean its used. Now if you want to get it even cheaper, go ahead, buy it used or refurbished on Ebay. But if you are worrisome about the quality then get the “new still in box” one. Either way, your saving yourself a ton of money!

By Gregory Smyth

Please note, we neither encourage nor endorse or suggest the use of any of the techniques discussed in this article. What we can tell you is that we definitely do not use them and our clients'’ sites continue to rank very well on Google, Yahoo and MSN. Always keep in mind that a proper organic way of optimizing your site will take longer than to Sp@m your way to the top rankings BUT you will stay at the top for a long time without running into the risk of being dropped completely from the Search Engine Index!

Link Farms
Link farms and Link Farm Sp@m - aka FFA (free-for-all link sites) were born when more and more webmasters learned that inbound links could heavily influence website rankings.

A link farm is a group of web pages and websites that all hyperlink to every other page and website in the group. Although some link farms were created by hand, most were created through automated programs and services. A link farm is one of the worst forms of sp@mming Search Engine’’s index (sometimes called sp@mexing or sp@mdexing).

However, you always have to keep in mind that the Search Engines (actually the people working on the Search Algorithms) evolve with the times! Therefore Google quickly devalued and eventually eliminated the page rank value and ranking positions it assigned to pages with an inordinate collection of links, non-related links and with signs of artificial link building (too many links in a too short a time frame). Nevertheless, link farms still exist as uninformed webmasters and many unethical SEO firms continue to use them.

Mini-Site Networks
In the early stages of the Google Page Rank algorithm, mini-site networks were created to exploit vulnerabilities. Domain names were cheap and the infrastructure costs VPS (Virtual Private Servers) or dedicated servers were cost effective, making it an attractive option.

Many mini-site networks were designed to act as leader pages just as if they were much larger sites. Many topic and/or product specific sites are created, with the goal of linking back to the main site. Each of these mini-sites would use a key phrase rich URL and be especially designed to meet the requirements of specific major search engines. Several SEO firms created artificial link density by weaving mini-site networks from multiple clients together.

In the early stages of the Google Page Rank algorithm this unethical method heavily influenced Google’’s perception of the importance of the main sites. However during the summer of 2004 Google did penalize several very prominent SEO firms for using this technique and banned many of their client sites.

Leader Pages
Leader pages are a series of similar pages designed to target 1 or 2 specific keywords and meet requirements of different search engine algorithms. Some people took this a step further and created a page for each phrase and for each search engine. This is one of the original SEO tricks dating back to the earliest days of search when there were almost a dozen leading search engines sorting less than a billion documents. Leader pages are a form of the doorway page technique.

At present, it is considered sp@m by the major Search Engines as they can see multiple copies of what is virtually the same document. Besides, this technique is no longer practical as on-site optimization has much less of an impact on your rankings than proper off-site optimization and Search Engines consider a far wider range of factors to calculate your sites quality score than the arrangement or density of keywords found in a unique page.

By Christine Harrell

Documents written by two or more authors are often stronger than single-writer works. Each team member brings different assets and the finished product can be more comprehensive and detailed.

Collaborative authoring with someone down the hall can be difficult enough. Collaborating on a project with someone in another office or even another country can seem impossible! Using today’’s online collaboration tools, many of the difficulties of collaboration can be eliminated no matter where your partners are located.

Use Collaboration Features in Word

Microsoft Word has a number of features designed specifically for writing collaboratively. The basic word processing tools have become so effortless that they barely need explaining. Spelling and grammar correction aid, although don'’t replace, manual proofreading. Document layout, automatic generation of tables of contents and indexes, and easy footnotes make the creation of professional-looking documents a snap.

Many people well-versed in Word’’s features haven'’t explored the collaboration tools. Tracking changes, creating new versions, adding editing notes and more allow multiple authors to not only modify the document but to understand other people’’s changes.

Most people think that group authoring or versioning with Word means emailing the document to all authors with every change. Everyone’’s inboxes get clogged with multiple versions of the document and it is easy to lose track of which version is the most current. People on slow connections have to wait while the document is downloaded even if they don'’t plan to make any edits. However, there is a far easier way that most of today’’s progressive companies are using to implement document sharing.

Upload To an Online File Sharing Service

By putting the current master document onto a central server, access is streamlined. Authors or editors who need the document can get it and multiple versions can be stored online. Furthermore, users can make notes and add comments about their versions for the rest of the members to see. Online file sharing can be made even more powerful by using online project workspaces.

Online task management simplifies team collaboration no matter where in the world team members are located. As long as each member has an internet connection, all activities can be coordinated through a central source.

These tools go beyond simple online file sharing. All communication can be carried out through the online workspace, making it easy for all members to see changes in the project. Task assignments and calendars mean each team member has a clear idea of duties and deadlines. As members are added or removed from the project, no one needs to update email lists since communications are coordinated through the project workspace.

Learning to use a full-featured online collaboration tool doesn'’t have to be hard for team members. Look for an application with an intuitive interface so your team members can get up to speed quickly. Encourage everyone to use the workspace so that the entire team remains fully apprised of important changes to the document. Team collaboration through an online tool is easy to implement and makes any project with multiple contributors easier to manage!

By Michael Talbert

Whether you plan to use an MSP for ongoing operations, or you feel the IT staff is sufficiently trained to handle it in house, failure to have the proper management tools can evaporate your ROI through network outages and costly troubleshooting practices. Software patches and vendor upgrades can wreak havoc in a production environment, and should always be tested first on an isolated segment using all inclusive analysis software to assess their impact on the network.

Most companies have come to rely on their IP PBX vendors management software, and after a year or two into the deployment have found them sorely lacking. Today, IPT vendors and developers are seeing the need for a management application that takes a look at the whole network, including the traffic patterns of data and real time applications.

Analysis software packages are rapidly entering the market from such well known industry leaders as Alcatel-Lucent, as well as vendor independent software developers.

The converged network analysis solutions available to you should be assessed in the planning stage, and once decided upon, used extensively in the testing, implementation, and ongoing operations and optimization stages. Such features as capacity planning, network assessment and simulations, design and configuration are all crucial in the pre deployment stages Your analysis software should be hardware agnostic and compatible with a wide variety of PBXs to accurately measure voice use patterns both pre and post deployment.

Monitoring of ongoing operations such as real time QOS data, dropped calls and packet loss, policy based management features, and troubleshooting alerts with root cause analysis should all be included in the application, as well as the ability to interpret the data in a variety of reports.

IP address management should also be a consideration, as now that you have converged, every device - a laptop, an IP phone, even hand held mobile devices that connect to your network will be competing within your address space. IPAM tools are also becoming available from many vendors to help streamline and simplify administration.

It is the ongoing operations responsibility to assure that the benchmarks that were set in the planning phase are being met, and that the SLAs agreed upon, either in house or with a carrier, are being adhered to. With the help of the right analysis solution IT can quickly determine both, and in the case of an SLA not being met, can help find where the responsibility lies.

Network Optimization

The same software that you use for ongoing operations could prove vital to the optimization phase of the IPT life cycle. While operations and optimization are both ongoing, they are also happening at the same time, and should probably best be thought of as two different job descriptions.

The IPT converged network is a dynamic entity, with moves, adds, and changes constantly shifting performance levels in a growing organization. Much of the motivation for convergence is to future proof the network, extending its life span to avoid costly upgrades every few years.

While much of the ongoing management operation is happening in real time on the production network, optimization could and should be performed first in the test lab. The goal of optimization is to push the network, to define new benchmarks and to improve existing SLAs with specific targets in mind.

If VoIP is the voice aspect in the triple play of IP Telephony, then IPT can be thought of as just one aspect in the broader scope of Unified Communications. As organizations seek to converge all communications, both real time and non real time, to an IP infrastructure, new applications are being developed and deployed. Unified Communications cover a range of applications from audio/video conferencing, blogging, mobility, wireless VoIP, distance learning, instant messaging, wikis, collaborative desktop applications, and presence, just to name a few.

Each of these applications will require its own bandwidth and Class of Service. It is the role of the optimizer to test and prepare the network for these potentially disruptive services by allocating resources appropriately, and making the necessary upgrades. With the proper tools and strict adherence to the IPT life cycle, convergence can future proof a network infrastructure for deploying a host of unified business applications for years to come.

Traditional offsite data backup involves storing discrete files that can be restored as needed. This is fine when replacing a few files because the originals were corrupted. However in the event of a major disaster that requires a complete system rebuild, restoration is a tedious process of installing the operating system, installing each application, then restoring the data files.

Luckily for IT managers, there is another way: bare metal recovery.

What Is Bare Metal Backup and Recovery?

Bare metal recovery allows an IT administrator to easily restore a system from scratch, even if a catastrophe has reduced the system to “bare metal.” Rather than restoring individual files, the entire system drive is restored in one operation. Not even the operating system needs to be installed.

In the early days of PCs an application called Ghost was the first consumer-oriented disk cloning software produced. For a long time it was the only option and to this day the idea of “ghosting a hard drive” means making an exact duplicate that can be restored easily.

Since those days, other options have appeared and there are now several ways to perform a total system restore and backup. Many online backup services now offer dedicated servers to be used for disk cloning, a technique now called bare metal recovery.

Does Your Organization Need Bare Metal Online Server Backup?

The short answer is “Probably.” Traditional online server backup is an important tool and is certainly a valid component of an overall disaster recovery plan. It is more likely that a disaster will destroy a few files or even a data drive rather than the entire system.

However, major disasters happen. A fire, flood, or other incident can physically destroy an entire computer system. Every minute your system is down is a minute your organization is losing money because no one can work. Today’’s businesses are dependent on their computer systems and can'’t function without them. The faster a system can be restored, the faster the company is running at full speed.

How Do Bare Metal Operations Work Online?

Server backup to an online provider can'’t be done by direct ghosting. However online providers are still an important step in the system recovery plan. Perform your bare metal backup using the software of your choice, which will create a disk image file. This image can then be saved through your online server backup provider just like any other file, thus backing up the backup.

Your organization has the protection of a complete disk image, allowing data restoration in the event of complete system destruction, combined with the protection of a redundant, offsite copy of your data. This operation will require a computer separate from your server.

After a disaster, the second computer can quickly be brought up with a bare bones operating system and your online restoration software. It pulls the disk image from the online server backup, which is used to restore the main server.

A look at how to weigh up the pros and cons of bespoke software versus off the shelf packages and whether the benefits outweight the costs.

By Catherine Harvey

In the days of looming recession and alleged credit crunch, competition within business has become ever fierce. Expenses are honed to within an inch of their life and staff, unfortunately, become a less essential commodity. Many companies who are feeling the pinch will survive the economic pressures by getting through on a skeleton work force.

There is a pecking order when it comes to surviving such issues as belt tightening. First to go are the incidentals. Staff will first notice putting their own hands in their pockets for tea and coffee, then the tea breaks will be shortened to ensure time is spent more productively, followed by cleaning services being dispensed with, putting more pressure on the remaining staff.

Sometimes, companies will cut corners with their services or products but this is counter-productive. If the quality of services diminishes then so do the customers. More conducive to surviving the credit crunch is to make what business you do, more effective. This certainly does not involve cutting corners but providing an efficient service to the best of the company’’s abilities.

One way of standing out from your competitors is to ensure that your service or product is easily accessible, straightforward and competitively priced. Many companies are beginning to recognise the benefits of custom software development to help with this process.

Everything in life is now computerised. This does not, however, ensure ease of use. Off the shelf software packages have long been used for companies to adapt their business to the software and thus have a useable programme that works even if it doesn'’t quite fit. Off the shelf software packages are cheaper than the custom software development process but it is this ‘’not quite fitting'’ is the hiccup that could make all the difference in the face of harsh competition.

To use the services of custom software development means that the IT solutions you are implementing will fit your business like a glove. It can grow or downsize depending on the needs of your business at the time. This will lead to a service that is fast and efficient, which then leads to a quicker turnover to impressed customers, leading to recommendations, leading to a more powerful business.

There are, however, drawbacks to custom software development. The first is the expense. It will take a whole team of analysts, programmers, technical writers and hardware and software specialists to come up with a bespoke piece of software. So, it would seem that in the long run custom software development is a good thing but you need adequate funds to start with to cover the costs of development and you also need to balance the pros and cons of this outlay within your accounts.

Their needs to be absolute clarity between software developer and customer to understand every aspect of the customers business needs now and in the future. If there is any grey areas, these will manifest themselves in the form of an expensive piece of bespoke software that just isn'’t quite up to the job; a waste of money.

Compatibility between existing customer systems and that of their customers can sometimes become an issue also. This can lead to frustrated customers who then choose to go elsewhere. On the other hand, there are some excellent off the shelf software packages that are designed to meet the needs of certain fields. Along with the much lower price tag, this ease of use can often sway an already hard up customer to stick with what he knows, a software package that will be easy to install.

Much depends on the type of business you have. If it is a common type of business eg. plumbing supplies, then there is bound to be a quality off the shelf software package that will accommodate your needs. But for those more unique businesses, then it is possible that only custom software development will suffice.

By Amy Nutt

There are many reasons in which a data center can fail. It can be quite frustrating, so it is important to know what those reasons are so that you can prevent them or know what to do when they happen. Because a lot of data centers exist on a site separate from the computers that are retrieving data from them, it is important that data centers continue running.

When they go down, all computers pulling from them from various places around a single country or even the world are not going to be able to retrieve any information. Such is true for customer service jobs in which customer information must be retrieved from a secure data center that resides elsewhere. If that data center is not operating, money is lost because employees are unable to do their jobs and customers become very unhappy that their situation cannot be resolved.

Reasons why data centers fail

Some of the reasons why data centers fail can be prevented and then there are some ways in which they cannot. However, it is important to do what is necessary to ensure as few outages as possible.

Here are some reasons for failure:

- The “wear-in” phase - This is the point in time in which the data center has just become operational. It is typical that certain things may fail as they are trying to become fully operational. It is like a toddler learning how to walk. The data center has to walk too, so it is good to let it run with minimal use and gradually build until it has gotten its legs. This involves comprehensive testing as the system usage increases in order to fix problems before they become a problem.

- The “wear-out” phase - This is when the data center is reaching the end of its life. Regular maintenance and care will slow this process, but major parts will eventually wear out. It is ideal to consistently monitor the system in order to predict failure and avoid catastrophe.

- Power failure - Power failure is devastating to anything that relies on it for operation. It is especially devastating to a data center. That is why it is important to have a generator or two ready to take over in case the power goes.

- Generator failure - Generators need care too and they need to be tested. Power goes out and generators take over in order to keep the data center running. Generators have been known to go out and cause data center failure.

- Metal whiskers - If the data center hardware is sitting on a metallic surface, then that metallic surface could grow zinc whiskers. These have been known to cause short circuits, especially in data centers. There are also tin whiskers that grow out from tin and they too cause shorts. Silver whiskers that grow on silver electrical contacts and gold whiskers that develop on gold plated services are also known to cause short outs. Large fans that suck the whiskers in can be used and the elements that produce them can be replaced.

Prevention is key

Prevention is the key to keeping your data center up and running. If any of these elements occur, it is good to stay calm and do what needs to be done to keep the problem from occurring again. If you have experienced generator failure, you may wish to invest in a backup to your main generator. If you'’re building a new data center, be sure to use flooring that does not produce any type of metal whiskers that can short out your hardware. By being vigilant, you can ensure that your data center uptime will be at or near 100%.

Once a business accepts the need for regular remote backups, the IT department requires a written backup and restore procedure. Creating such a plan doesn''t have to be difficult and will reduce confusion so that your data storage system is protected.

By Christine Harrell

Once a business accepts the need for regular remote backups, the IT department requires a written backup and restore procedure. Creating such a plan doesn'’t have to be difficult and will reduce confusion so that your data storage system is protected.

Creating a Backup Plan

When creating a backup plan, decide what data should be included in the backup. Backup space costs money. Nightly backups of files that haven'’t changed in over a year may not be the most cost effective solution. Isolating particular directories or file types can reduce the size of the backup while still protecting important data.

Any backup plan should include multiple copies in case the backup file happens to be damaged at the same time the main server is corrupted. It is even possible for the system to crash during the backup operation, losing both your server and the backup. If you are overwriting your lone backup at the time, you just lost everything.

The simplest redundancy plan is to have two backups and alternate between them, however many companies have more. A common practice is to have one backup for every weekday so there are five backup files, one for Monday, one for Tuesday, and so on.

Finally, your offsite data backup plan should include a schedule of test restores. It is always possible you are backing up to a corrupt destination and none of your backups are intact. Ideally you should restore a few files every backup so you know the operation went through successfully.

Don'’t Forget the Restore Plan

It’’s easy to remember to create the backup plan since it is a procedure that affects your company every day. However what happens after disaster strikes? After major equipment failure, the department is likely to be in confusion.

There is pressure to get the data restored as quickly as possible as company operations can'’t continue until the system is running again. Imagine how much worse if the failure is due to a disaster like a fire. A detailed step-by-step restore plan is an integral part of a comprehensive offsite data backup procedure.

A solid restore plan makes it that much easier to get your business running smoothly again after disaster. You may need multiple plans for different contingencies. Bad sectors on a hard drive might require restoring just a few files, while a catastrophic incident could involve fully reformatting and restoring your entire server.

For best results, all offsite data backup and restore procedures should be fully tested by the personnel who will be performing the operation. This may reveal missing steps or inaccurate instructions. Tests will have to be conducted during a time the files involved aren'’t in use, which usually means IT staff coming in after hours.

When testing, make local backups of the files to be tested in case the restore procedure goes wrong. Though it may require a bit of time to create an offsite data backup and restore plan, once you have a systematic, documented system in place offsite data backups will become a simple part of the regular routine. If and when disaster strikes, it will be well worth the effort!

You should back up your computer, but what if it happens to crash before you do?

By Matt Chang

Do you have everything saved on your computer? Is all your data stored there and you have no system for back ups? Do you think that your computer will never crash? A lot of people have important data on their hard disks, but only a few of them are backing up their data from time to time. All it takes is one crash and you are out of luck. Sometimes you can get someone to recover the lost data, but that is not always possible. If you take anything away from this article, by the way, it is not meant to scare you…you should make sure you back up your computer at least once a month, or once a week if you use it frequently.

But, what should you do in the event that you do have a crash? Here is the quick survival guide for dealing with a computer crash when or if it should happen.

the first thing you have to do is immediately turn off your computer. Do not try to press alot of key commands to try to get things to come back, and don'’t try to keep turning it on and off. The more you try and put demands on the computer cpu, the more you run the risk of losing all the data. Your are best of just stopping where you are at.

When you send your hard disk to a data recovery company they start their diagnosics. The problem may be logical ( or software related) or it could be physical (hardware related).

If the problem is logical it won'’t cost so much to recover your data and it will also take less time than a physical problem. In case of a logical problem, the hard drive should be still recognized by your BIOS. The kinds of things that affect the logics of the computer have to do with software. You could have a virus, or you could have lost a driver or file that causes the computer not to run smoothly. Diagnostics will find what problem, and either remove the virus, or re install the missing driver.

If the problem is physical, you will have to spend some money on the recovery. The damage can be mechanical or electronic. Many cases are caused by something like too much heat. If your fan breaks, or there is alot of dust build up around the fan, you can burn out components. In case of too much heat, the spindle motor might get badly damaged. To lower the chance of a hard drive crash you should make sure that your pc is properly ventilated. Fans are pretty cheap and easy to install. If the components of your pc are cooler, it will run much better and the chance of data loss is lower. You should encounter a few problems, like very annoying sounds before the spindle motor completely fails. If you start to hear funny sounds, by all means, immediately take your computer to get looked at. This is a way of giving you a heads up!

The problem with a menchanical or physical issues is that, depending on the damage created on the hard disk, the information may not be retrieveable.

In the event that you do run into a computer crash, try to have as much information as possible about the make, model, and system you have on your computer. They will need to know the kind of hard drvie you have, the processors, memory, etc. Make sure you have this information readily available.

The best time to find a good computer repair person is when you don'’t need one. Start looking now, and get references. You don'’t want to be looking when you computer is already broken.

Lastly, the best way to eliminate all of this is to start to back up you computer regularly. Depending on how much information you have, you can get affordable zip drives to store files, and even external hard drives too. From $30 to a few hundred, you can have piece of mind that should something happen, you are covered.

Style has a new look these days - trendy colored laptops! Long gone are the days of boring black or standard gray laptops. Today more and more manufacturers are turning to the colors of the rainbow for their portals to the internet highway. Pink seems to be the hot color right now, with neon green coming in second and candy apple red screeching in at third.

Being stylish and trendy is not only cool, it is mandatory for our teens today. Showing up to school with an ultra cool, trendy colored laptop will guarantee they are the cool kid on campus. Stop by any computer store or browse any online pc store and an array of color is what you will see. Colored laptops have taken surfing the net to a whole new dimension. You can now match your shoes, purse, cell phone or briefcase to the color of your laptop.

Most laptop manufacturers have jumped onto the trendy wagon of color. Colors ranging from blue and pink to brown and purple. Apple started the craze of being different with their white Macs, which made a huge buzz in the computer industry. Soon after that Sony and Dell decided that white was just as boring as gray or black, so they added the brighter blues and flashier pinks.

HP decided that they could do one better by introducing their brightly colored Sony VAIO. If you want the best of the best, try out an ASUS-EEE PC. This beauty not only combines superb features with fabulous colors, it is small and compact and very light. HP is not the only manufacturer that has tapped
