If not properly maintained jewelery can start to tarnish and lose it''s luster.

By Daniel Millions

Everyone loves their jewelry, but not every one cares for it the way they should. A precious gem stone or diamond ring should last for an entire lifetime and remain in excellent condition if it is looked after the way it should be. Unfortunately not all people take the time to firstly learn how to keep the value of the jewelry and secondly actually clean it. This article will endeavor to provide some advice on how you can prevent the jewelery becoming damaged in the first place and also how to preserve its quality over the long term.

When it comes to caring for your jewelry prevention is better than cure. You should get in to good habits straight away by establishing a routine that will help to preserve the quality of them. Firstly you should follow a general routine for all types of jewelry and this is based on common sense. If you are doing the house work, such as washing the dishes or using household detergents make sure any rings are removed beforehand.

Likewise, if you play sport or swim, make sure you are not wearing any necklaces or rings. Chlorine in particular can be very damaging for jewelry.

You should also be careful about how you store the jewelry when you are not wearing it. All rings and necklaces should be kept in a safe and dry place. Preferably in a jewelry box that is away from areas of the home that may be exposed to extreme hot or cold temperatures. Be sure to keep the stones separate from each other as diamonds in particular if rubbed against each can scratch the surface.

Finally it is important to regularly check with jewelry such as rings that the stones are not loose. It is good practice to take any jewelry that utilizes mounting and prongs to a jeweler every year to prevent this kind of damage. After all, the last thing you want to do is lose a diamond!

A jeweler can also carry out maintenance work on necklaces and beads to ensure that they do not snap at an inopportune moment.

When it comes to cleaning, not all jewelry should be cared for in the same way. The vast majority of jewelry should be cleaned with soap and water. For example Diamonds can attract grease from the skin easily and this should be cleaned by soaking the diamond in lukewarm soapy water and then gently wiping them using something with a soft brush. A toothbrush is excellent for this type of job and then afterward you should wash them with water to remove the excess.

There are some types of jewelry where it is important to know what should not be used to clean them. For example, Coral should not come into contact with cleaning fluids or excess heat as this will cause cracks on the surface. Likewise, Turquoise has a very absorbent surface and so any commercial cleaning solutions should be avoided.

Receiving a sparkling diamond ring or necklace is something to be treasured. As you can see it is important to preserve the quality of the jewelry by following common sense procedures to firstly avoid deterioration and secondly in maintaining its appearance. This is not difficult and only takes a small amount of thought and time to ensure that that treasured gift still looks wonderful many years from now.

By Jay Snaric

Never in the history of human existence has the rate of obesity increased more than it has over just the past two decades. Of course, the obvious question is - Why? Well, the correct answer is that there is no single reason. I'’d like to point out some of the major causes. And I'’d like to start with the Government and our schools.

In the September 2007 edition of Scientific American, NYU professor Marion Nestle pointed to a political cause of obesity. She noted that in 1980 the Reagan administration’’s deregulation of industry freed up agricultural production. This encouraged farmers to grow more food. The calories available per capita in the U.S. increased from 3,200 a day in 1980 to 3,900 a day two decades later. That is a difference of 700 calories available in the U.S. food supply per person per day.

Let’’s put this in perspective. With everything else staying constant, if you eat 500 less calories per day, you will lose one pound of fat every week. Based on this, if you consumed 700 extra calories per day for a year you would gain 73 pounds. Now most people don'’t gain this much weight in a year because there are a lot of other variables that must be included, but you get the idea of the significance this political move had on the obesity epidemic.

Nestle further exposed that the early 1980s also marked the advent of the ‘’shareholder value movement'’ on Wall Street. Stockholder demands for higher short-term returns on investments forced food companies to expand sales in a marketplace that already contained excessive calories. Food companies responded by seeking new sales and marketing opportunities. They encouraged formerly shunned practices that eventually changed social norms, such as frequent between-meal snacking, eating in book and clothing stores, and serving larger portions.

This led to one of the most significant causes of obesity - increased portion size!
There is so much food available that food establishments, such as restaurants, use huge portion sizes as a marketing tool. We have grown conditioned and accustomed to these enormous portions of food. The bottom line is that these portions are simply too much. It’’s sadly ironic that there are people literally starving around the world and yet truth be told there is a surplus of food. The problem of starvation around the world is not sufficient food production. The problem is food distribution. It’’s an economic and logistics problem.

Since we'’re on the government, let’’s talk about the Food Guide Pyramid. The Food Guide Pyramid, developed in 1991, was the government’’s underhanded attempt to educate people on how to eat a balanced and healthy diet. The branch of government responsible for producing the Food Guide Pyramid is the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). First of all, don'’t you think that there is a more qualified branch of the government to determine what a healthy diet constitutes - like a medical or health branch? You know, a branch that actually has individuals highly qualified to talk about medical and health issues. When I want to know how to plant corn I'’ll call the Department of Agriculture, not when I want to know what diet will keep me healthy.

Walter Willett, chairperson of the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health, states that the government’’s pyramid is built on “shaky scientific ground and that it is tremendously flawed”. Dr. Willett is basing his response on the very best science and controlled studies we have available today. And when he was asked about the government’’s food pyramid stance on fats, protein, dairy, and carbohydrates, Willett said none of this is accurate, and the pyramid is so out of sync with scientific evidence that it almost has to be totally dismantled and rebuilt from the ground up.

Why would the Department of Agriculture do this? If you study the Food Guide Pyramid, you would see that it recommends that individuals, by far, get the majority of their daily calories from agricultural products such as rice, pasta, bread, and potatoes. Yes, it is a self serving guide that benefits lobbying groups such as the U.S. Potato Board and other farming interest groups. This has nothing to do with a conspiracy theory, but everything to do with simply lining pockets and serving political agendas. Sad, but true.

In 2005, the government released a new version of the pyramid called My Pyramid. It’’s just more ambiguous, and therefore is less able to be directly attacked. All you have to know about the new pyramid is that it is still put out by the Department of Agriculture.

Schools
Let start with the basics - school lunches. Read the following guidelines from the U.S. Department of Agriculture regarding school lunches. Then you can be the judge of whose best interests are in mind. I don'’t think you will conclude that it is our children’’s best interest.

This is direct from the Department of Agriculture. Generally, public or nonprofit private schools of high school grade or under and public or nonprofit private residential child care institutions may participate in the school lunch program. School districts and independent schools that choose to take part in the lunch program get cash subsidies and donated commodities from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for each meal they serve. In return, they must serve lunches that meet Federal requirements. In addition to cash reimbursements, schools are entitled by law to receive commodity foods, called entitlement” foods. Schools can also get bonus commodities as they are available from surplus agricultural stocks. School food authorities can also be reimbursed for snacks served to children through age 18 in after school educational or enrichment programs.

Another inexcusable act being committed by schools is the strategic placement and availability of vending machines. These vending machines are filled with soda, candy, caffeine and sugar laden energy drinks, chips, and cupcakes. Food and vending companies bid to have their machines placed in the cafeteria, halls, and even the gym. The companies get money, the school gets money, and the kids get overweight and unhealthy.

Perhaps the most sinful act of all, however, is the reduction / elimination of physical activity in the curriculum. Gym class and recess are disappearing. Child obesity, diabetes in children, hypertension in children, and restlessness in children are all increasing. You don'’t have to have a medical background to see the connection here. It’’s more of just observing and having common sense.

As a college professor who teaches freshman and sophomores, I see first hand the level at which our students are prepared after they leave high school. I'’m not going to discuss math and writing skills, but I am going to point out the lack of real world preparation that these students have. Bottom line is that our secondary education system is dropping the ball when is comes to real world preparation. This includes things like: writing a resume and interviewing for a job, understanding different types of mortgages and other basic information when buying a home, understanding contracts such as lease agreements, understanding credit cards, bank loans, car loans, and credit scores, understanding how to leverage and invest money, stocks and real estate, understanding the importance of basic health maintenance such as regular dental and doctor visits, regular self breast and testicular exams, understanding the basics of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals, understanding the real health issues associated with obesity, and understanding how to read food labels and serving size.

This list could go on and on. From the above list I can guarantee you that if properly educated the following tragedies would have been limited: U.S. Foreclosure Explosion of 2008, massive credit card debt, and of course the Obesity Epidemic of the 21 century.

H. G. Wells said, human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe. I think education is losing the race. We need change! If we are going to conquer this epidemic, we need to start doing things differently. We cannot attack this problem as we have been, because it obviously is just not working.

So you'’re thinking about getting a tattoo? Most likely your greatest concerns have been focused on what design you'’re getting and where you are going to have it placed. But have you asked yourself about the potential health risks?

Protecting yourself depends very much upon who does your work and the condition of the shop. In fact, virtually all of the advisories from the Centers For Disease Control And Prevention website (www.cdc.gov) are concerned with the safety of the tattoo artist rather than the recipient. In other words, if he is performing his job effectively and running a clean safe shop, you have very little to worry about. Issues such as the transfer of blood borne pathogens (hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV, for example) and staph infections should be a non-issue if your tattoo artist is taking proper precautions. It sounds scary, but the good news is, if the artist is protecting himself properly, he is most certainly protecting you as well.

As a customer you need to concern yourself with the transfer of germs and viral pathogens from the equipment or the artist himself and so ask yourself the following questions:
Did he use fresh needles taken from a sealed packet before placing them into the machine (the gun)?
Did he use an autoclave to sterilize any non-disposable hardware he is using on me?
Is he using fresh ink and fresh disposable ink cups?
Does the shop appear clean and convey the professionalism of a doctor’’s office?
And finally, is he wearing rubber gloves and treating his hands as sterile equipment?

That last question is perhaps the most important, because if he is not adequately protecting himself, you may develop a reasonable suspicion as to how well he is protecting you. Be a stickler! Accept only the best, most safety-oriented care possible. There is no such thing as good enough in the tattoo business. If your artist does not behave professionally, then you would be wise to seek someone who chooses to conduct business in a way that places the well-being of the customer above all else.

Typically, most problems (if any) arise AFTER you leave the shop. Professional tattoo shops are clean, responsible places of business and if customers get bad work, those places of business tend to go out of business. So if you'’re getting good work from a good artist at a good shop, half of your concerns have probably been addressed. Now it’’s YOUR job to make sure you protect your new tattoo and your health with some common sense care.

According to one Maryland tattoo artist we contacted, the most important things for a customer to do after he leaves the shop are:
Treat a new tattoo like any other open wound.
After two or three hours remove the bandage wash it often with soap and water.
Apply a thin coat of topical ointment for the next three or four days.
Leave any scabs alone. They are natural a bandage.
Showering is OK, but avoid soaking in tubs, pools, and especially natural bodies of water such as ponds and lakes.
Do not re-bandage the wound. Air flow is helpful.
Do not let tattoo artist wrap your wound in plastic wrap! A proper, sterile, air-permeable bandage is the best environment for your new tattoo.

By Ann Knapp

Recent news coverage across the U.S. has cited a rising problem in infrastructure metal theft from Pittsburgh to Massachusetts to Washington. Sewer grates, manhole covers, and even steel bridge castings from a railroad company have become the items of choice for those looking to cash in on the high price of metal. As the domestic and international demand for infrastructure and manufacturing metals has increased, the price for these commodities has created an escalation of metal thefts. These types of crimes do not only create serious safety problems, they also add a significant financial burden to the communities affected.

“Government agencies, police, and the public should be alert that the metal theft epidemic that we have been experiencing - has now apparently spread to ferrous materials,” quoted a representative for the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) in a spring 2008 article on their Web site.

ISRI is a non-profit trade organization that represents more than 1,350 companies that process, broker, and industrially consume scrap commodities. The organization works to develop tools to help law enforcement fight material theft crimes and to educate about the need for comprehensive efforts to solving this problem.

The organization has created the ISRI Theft Alert System for the use of law enforcement agencies. The system alerts recyclers in ISRI’’s contact list via email when informed of a material theft, not only in the state where the theft occurred but in surrounding states as well. The service is available for free to law enforcement agencies.

As noted in the IRSI article, there can be difficulty in discerning between stolen material and legitimate materials that comes from a scrap yard. Thankfully, stolen material is said to be a small percentage of the materials that comes into scrap yards.

The recent rise in ferrous metal theft is a serious concern due to the relative ease and availability of iron and steel materials. In addition, thieves will often cause serious damage to public or private infrastructure during the theft. Recovery of these materials is very difficult and replacement costs are often expensive.

In the past couple of years especially, thieves have directed their attentions to nonferrous materials, such as copper, bronze, stainless steel, and aluminum. ISRI’’s alert system reports the theft of a diverse collection of materials. Everything from cemetery urns and copper wiring to rural irrigation systems and bleachers from ball fields have been heisted by metal thieves. In addition, the system has indicated nonferrous materials are also the target of thieves, including newsprint, cardboard and plastic milk crates.

Prior to the rise in metal theft several years ago, the ISRI had created recommendations for reducing the risk of accepting stolen materials. A cooperative relationship between police and those in the scrap metal industry is said to be vital in the fight against metal theft. The organization has also worked to train police on identifying stolen material, as well as encouraging businesses to improve their record keeping and seller identification requirements. These steps help law enforcement track down the thieves and the metal they steal. The association is also a member of the National Crime Prevention Council.

There are several things you need to know about documentation and flood water safety if your property is involved in a flood in Baltimore.

By Ron Subs

Floods happen for a variety of reasons. They may come when you have had full warning of them or when you are least expecting them. If you have been a victim of a flood in Baltimore there are steps you need to take after the unfortunate incident.

First and foremost contact your insurance company right away. The insurance company will let you know the correct procedure of handling the aftermaths of a flood in Baltimore. Be sure to take photographs of your loss and water damage. The photographs will be very helpful to the insurance company to process your water damage claim.

Also, you will be protecting yourself with excellent documentation. If you have a video camera you can use that as well to present the damage done to your Baltimore home or business. Be sure to save all information you receive from your insurance company. It is best to buy a manila envelope or a file to keep all of your papers neatly organized in one place for easy access.

You will need to get a Baltimore contractor or ask your insurance company for a reputable contractor to get the water damage out of your home or business. It is imperative that you start this immediately.

There are many hidden dangers from a flood such as mold, mildew, and dangerous bacteria in the water. Flooded water that is clean is not a danger to humans as far as bacteria goes until after twenty four hours. Then the water becomes grey water or black water which can be toxic to humans.

Also, you want to make sure all of your circuit breakers are off so that you will not become the victim of a horrible shock.

If you start to take care of the water damage yourself be sure to put all of your receipts in your manila envelope or file. You must save them so you can put them on your insurance claim at a later date on your home or business.

Depending on the extent of the damage done to your Baltimore home or business you may have to move out until the needed work is completed. Most insurance companies cover this under their plan for you. Check with your insurance company. Water damage in Baltimore can be devastating but your insurance company may help this disaster run smoothly, get the work done quickly by a reputable contractor, and have you back in your home in no time.

A look at government water policies in the UK and why meters will most probably in all homes in coming years.

By Thomas Pretty

According to recent government estimates the average household uses around fifty thousand litres of water each year purely for drinking and bathing. When put into context this amount is enough to fill the average size private swimming pool; additionally, if this amount of water was bough in shops in bottles, it would cost around twenty thousand pounds. Considering this figure, the water bills we must pay seem a bargain, but while it is still relatively cheap, bills have increased steadily in recent years. As seemingly all of the utility bills are increasing, this is worrying; as a result of these rising bills however, installing water meters can be a great way to save water, and hence money.

The situation in the UK is that water companies have complete control over the geographic areas they operate in. Because of this, the water companies can charge nearly any price they like, although the industry is regulated by the watchdog, Ofwat. Because of these geographic restrictions, inter-company competition is non-existent, unlike the other utilities, consumers do not have the option to switch supplier that is unless they move house to a new region. Depending upon the region however, it is likely that meters will be in use in order to control user water consumption.

Government and industry experts have colluded to produce an average saving per household of around one hundred and twenty pounds after the installation of a water meters. The rule of thumb is that if a household has more bedrooms than residents, water meters will be worth installing. It is not just a financial saving however, it is believed that psychologically households use less water with the knowledge that it is being metered, some estimates place this saving at around ten percent. There are however problems with switching to meters. There is shift in onus from the supplier to the homeowner should a leak occur, meaning that if you experience a leak for an extended period of time, it could turn out to be very expensive.

The choice whether to install water meters however is likely to be removed from a lot of households; especially in the south of England. In some areas the government has rolled out plans for compulsory metering in the next half decade. One of these areas is in Kent, around Dover and Felixstowe. The local water board has put forward plans to install twenty thousand in homes all over the region. This plan is a reaction to certain areas'’ excessive water usage and will attempt to reduce consumption levels considerably.

This plan, while only regional at the moment is likely to become more widespread in the future. The ultimate objective of the government is to put meters in all regions, but in the foreseeable future only the regions that are considered to be ‘’waterscarce'’ will be focussed upon. It is hoped that through these measures the instances of water shortages will be reduced. Once these plans have been introduced into the hardest hit areas, meters will be rolled out all over the country. By doing this the government hopes to pre-empt any problems with the water supply in future years.

This is an ongoing worry for the government who are hoping that effective long term planning and the widespread implementation of water meters will mean the nation’’s consumption falls considerably. Most new homes in the country now have meters and seemingly, houses in waterscarce regions will also have them soon. Water is the source of life and it is only through efficient and wide reaching fore thinking that we will be able to secure this most valuable of natural resources.

La Manga offers you a variety of accommodation options for your Spanish holiday. From luxury resorts to villas, and everything in between, you can choose the type of accommodation to suit your party. One of the options you can choose for your La Manga holiday is the apartment option. Apartments in La Manga give you the comforts you normally enjoy at home, but in a Mediterranean setting.

La Manga is part of the Spanish region of Murcia. It is located on the Costa Calida. Separating the Mediterranean Sea from the sea inlet of Mar Menor, La Manga is a strip of land 28-kilometers long. When planning a stay in La Manga for your Spanish holiday, research the available apartments to suit your specific budget. If you require economical apartments with the necessities, you will find them in La Manga. You can also secure a luxury apartment with extra amenities and upscale rich furnishings.

In the center of the towns such as Santiago de la Ribera, you can find two-bedroom apartments in a serene environment. Here you have peace and quiet, but are only a short distance away from the beaches of Mar Menor in La Manga, where much outdoor sporting action occurs. Whatever location you choose for your holiday apartment in La Manga, you can find well-equipped accommodations.

Many apartments in La Manga include TV, DVD, CD players, washing machines, microwave ovens, air-conditioning and even central heating for winter living in the region. Some offer rooftop solariums as well as barbecue areas. Apartments can also come with fully equipped kitchens. It all depends on what you require and what fits your trip budget when you plan your Spanish holiday.

Many apartments are of the semi-detached style. Some consist of arrangements of four apartments in one block, with two on the upper level and two on the lower level. Some lower level apartments, whether in a semi-detached building or not, give you the luxury of having a parking spot right outside your room for your rental car. A lower level apartment offers quaint patios while many upper level apartments in La Manga provide patio doors, which lead onto nice balconies that offer spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea.

Modern, fully-equipped apartments in La Manga offer comfort while at the same time providing easy access to local Spanish nightlife, bars, restaurants, stores and cyber cafes. Of course, there is always the magnificent scenery that is part of Spain’’s persona. You can choose as your holiday accommodation a luxurious penthouse apartment that offers fantastic views of Mar Menor and the mountains of Calablanque National Park. You can also choose an apartment in the La Manga region that provides a view of the lighthouse at Cabo de Palos. Many other apartments offer beach, wooded areas and other mountain views.

A two-bedroom apartment for your Spanish holiday will allow you to sleep four to six people. Many apartments of this type in La Manga have two twin bedrooms with a sofa bed in the lounge area. Some of these two bedroom facilities also have two bathrooms. You can choose apartments in La Manga that come equipped with a private pool for those days you want solitude away from the crowds at the region’’s famous beaches.

With the many types and styles of apartments in La Manga, you are never too far away from supermarkets and other food stores where you can stock up your apartment kitchen with the fare you desire. Depending on where you book your apartment for your Spanish holiday, some supermarkets and town markets are only a five-minute walk away. When you begin your search for apartments in La Manga, check out what activities are available near the accommodation you select.

Whatever you desire, there is an apartment in La Manga for you. Take your time and search the many types available in many price ranges. Choose one that will make your Spanish holiday one of total rest and relaxation because your apartment in La Manga will be your home away from home.

By William Doggett

Shopping online or over the Internet can be very intimidating for someone who has never done it before or has a hang up or two when it comes to putting all of that personal information into a website like your credit card number or address.

There are a slew of ways to protect your information online and find great deals and bargains at the same time. If you are not shopping online, you are missing out on the best way today to make smart and safe purchases.

We will start with the safety of online shopping to give you a warm and fuzzy so you can get out there and find those deals.

Look for sites that have safety emblems. These will include logos from watch dog companies like the Better Business Bureau, Yahoo Stores and many others. These names keep a close eye on businesses and ensure that the companies they represent are taking all of the precautions necessary against online fraud and identity theft.

Another item to look for is a secure shopping cart. How do you do that? You simply look for the little lock emblem at the bottom of you web browser when you have placed an item or two in your shopping basket as you are beginning the checkout process. Another method of identifying a secure site is to look up at the address bar in your browser. You should see “https” instead of “http”. This identifies a secure checkout. The entire site may not be secure, but as long as the checkout cart is, you are safe.

Now, let me get straight to the good stuff.

How do I find good deals? One great way is to simply do a Google search for the brand name and item name of the product that you are looking for. Take the first page and find three companies that appear reputable. Compare their prices on the same item and go for the cheaper. Another key item to watch for is the shipping. Make sure that it is fair.

Another way is to use shopping comparison engines. These are websites devoted to giving you a comparison on a variety of items so that you can see the difference in pricing. Be careful using these comparison online shopping engines because they do not guarantee the safety of the site. They just simply compare the items.

Another great way to find deals is to sign up for company email newsletters. This will allow the company to mail you their specials when they come out. This is the best way to get the best deals. I would highly recommend you get on a few of these mailing lists so that you can get the deals right away and not miss them.

Remember, when doing your online shopping, look for good deals but always keep an eye on the security of the site as well as the sites reputation. I can tell you that most crooked companies do not make it to the front page of a search engine and stay very long at all.

It''s amazes me the number or people who get married without giving any thought to the meaning of their rings.

By Daniel Millions

As serious of a union that marriage is, a majority of the individuals that enter into this lifelong union have absolutely no idea about any of the history of wedding rings.

No matter what part of the country you may wish to travel to, chances are, that no matter where you might go, the wedding ring will be easily recognized for the loving commitment that this circle of eternity is meant to represent.

The mysterious history of the wedding ring begins along the sandy deserts of North Africa. Pharaoh and all of the Egyptians that were known as his people, dotted all along the Nile river and the vast fertile flood plains that lined all along the banks of the Nile.

Many of the reeds, rushes and sedges that flourished along the riverbanks were what ultimately became known as the first wedding rings. The Egyptians would artistically fashion these twigs and reeds into what became known as the first wedding rings. They would carefully braid and twist each piece into a cherished and delicate wedding ring to be presented to their loved one. Normally the wedding rings that were made in this manner would only last about a year.

Other materials started being used, such as ivory, bone, and even leather. It was evident that these types of material would last significantly longer when used in the craftsmanship of the wedding rings, than the original materials that were used, which even included the use of hemp. There were of course many other pieces of jewelry that were also made, such as bracelets that would be worn on the wrist.

The wedding ring had great meaning for the Egyptians, other than merely being a ring worn on the finger. Just as it is today, the circle that seemed to return to itself by having no beginning and no end, symbolized eternity. The center of the ring had a meaning that goes way beyond just an empty center. For the Egyptians, it symbolized both the known and the unknown special events and things that were yet to come through the door, or the gateway, which was the center of the ring.

To even further describe the depth of the meaning that was encircled around the wedding rings worn by the Egyptians, they also believed that the vein of the third finger of the left hand, traveled directly from the heart.

Even though it occurred rather gradually, in later years metallurgy slowly began to replace the earlier styles in which the wedding rings were made. The craftsmanship of the first rings that were made in this manner was often poorly designed and extremely uneven. To help enhance the style of these early forms of the wedding ring, couples would often receive various gems and precious stones that could be set into the bands. Most of these rings were more used to convey ones high standing and wealth.

When the brides of Egyptian times accepted a wedding ring, she then became tied to the man who presented her with the ring, and known as his property. In turn, the woman who accepted the ring also enjoyed rights that would protect her as his bride to be. After accepting the wedding ring from him, the enforceable and binding contract that it portrayed would be summoned upon to prevent any rivals she might have, to be unable to overtake her position.

The overall design of the wedding ring might have changed a great deal since these earlier years, but its deep meaning of love and eternity still remains the same.

Advice to those hiring vans including rental and driving tips as well as safety concerns.

By Thomas Pretty

People hire vans for all number of different reasons. Renters from business professionals who need a replacement van to maintain their operations, to those undergoing a self move all use van hire services in order to transport goods from destination a to b. Thankfully with such a wide selection of van hire services out there the choice is immense, meaning that as a renter, it is possible to find nearly any van for any purpose. Hopefully the following information will give renters the vital information to ensure their rental experience is easy and stress free.

First of all the considerations is to have the correct documents when picking up the hire van; these documents are vital as without them you will not be able to rent the vehicle. Your will need a copy of the rental agreement or confirmation number. This will normally be sent by email if booking on line but may also be sent through the post. It will also be required to produce a valid driver’’s licence, both paper and photo-card elements. If your address differs from your licence, a recent utility will be needed to act as proof of address. Additionally most companies will want to see the credit or debit card that made the payment in order to assess its validity.

Depending upon the hire company being used, the fuel policy can differ dramatically. A lot of rental agreements will not include the fuel meaning that when you return the vehicle it will have to have the same amount of fuel than when it left the depot. If you are unsure which type of fuel to use, as many vans are diesel, be sure to ask a member of staff before leaving.

When you are picking up the van you will normally be given a vehicle report form. This will contain information on the van’’s mileage, cleanliness and general condition. It is important that before signing this document, the vehicle should be checked over carefully for signs of damage to ensure that the report is accurate and you will not be stung with a penalty charge when you get back. If the rental company has a roadside assistance package, it is advisable to take the phone number of this service before you embark, just in case the van breaks down.

Once you are driving the van remember that some companies will enforce a mileage restriction. This is why it is important to ensure that you have unlimited mileage, otherwise charges may be applicable. Especially for self movers, the lifting of heavy objects will be a concern. Remember the health and safety advice on lifting and if you can get a van with a tail lift, do so, your back will thank you.

Before heading off it is advisable to familiarise yourself with the controls of the vehicle. Adjust all the mirrors and seating so you give yourself the most visibility when journeying, obviously, putting on the seatbelt is a prerequisite before travel. Once the cab is set up properly ensure that the doors are secure so they do not open during transit. Additionally you should always be aware of the height and width of the vehicle; remember that will not handle in the same way as your car so take it slow and be careful.

Hopefully this advice will give those utilising van hire services to use their vehicle safely and sensibly. Ultimately a van is a tool to be used for ferrying items around. Understand the rules of the rental agreement and be aware of the importance of safety and your hire experience should be excellent.

Though the Olympic Games kicked off in considerable splendour last week, the 29th games has been shrouded in a thick cloud of controversy ever since China was announced as the host. But with zero countries deciding to boycott the competition, we look at the conflict between the political and the sporting concerns that surround the Olympics.

By Samantha Gilmartin

Just before 8:00pm on the 8th day of the 8th month of 2008, 2,008 drummers silently stood in neat, dark rows at the heart of China’’s National ‘’Bird’’s Nest'’ Stadium. As the countdown to the opening of the 29th Olympic Games began, counted simultaneously in western and Mandarin figures, the pounding roll of the drums began to rise. From less than a whisper the drums swelled to a deafening roar in an ancient rhythmic ritual designed to evoke the ancestral spirits of China.

The sea of drummers banging in unison heralded-in the padding footsteps of some invisible giant from across Beijing. Outlined in perfectly engineered and carefully mapped fireworks, these huge footsteps made their way through the city to the huge stadium. When they arrived, the Bird’’s Nest erupted into a concert of dazzling pyrotechnics that burnt and fizzed and left, in white ash, the five rings, the mark of the Olympics, spread out on the centre of the stadium floor.

Mesmerising, romantic and perfectly executed, the opening ceremony was certainly a powerful spectacle. But beneath the pomp and the decadence stands China, its 5000 year history, the Communist regime, Tibet, Darfur, Taiwan, fossil fuels and air pollution. With the world turning up to marvel and then participate, what does this say about the way we view their foreign policy, human rights record and climate change agenda? Can the remainder of the International Community face China in the gymnasium and on the running track and not in the embassies and seats of government of the world?

Or is that simply missing the point? With the world turning to focus on China, scrutinising their every move and turning up to compete with them in a fair and dignified playing field, are we by design integrating the country with the rest of the International Community?

Of course this is not the first time the Olympics have attracted furious political debate. Most famously, the games held in 1936 in Berlin, was the seat of immense controversy. Held under the jurisdiction of the Nazi Party, many nations expressed stern reservations about the Third Reich’’s inherent fascist and anti-semetic policies. Though black and Jewish athletes from other nations were offered all the social freedoms that whites could enjoy, German-Jewish athletes were banned from competing for their country.

These games were, of course, the games where the black American runner and long jump competitor Jesse Owens picked up four gold medals. Famously neglected by the German oligarchy, many fans and other athletes cheered and supported him. In fact, Owens forged a lifelong friendship with German athlete Luz Long, who helped coach Owens during the games in Berlin. The snubbing of Owens'’ achievement by Hitler is certainly famous and utterly reprehensible, but it might be worth noting that, as an American athlete in Berlin, he was allowed to use the same bars, restaurants and public transport as everyone else. In the then racially segregated USA, this was not a luxury he was afforded at home.

The single-party socialist government that control China may not be amongst the most popular administrations in the world, but then neither is it the most deplorable.

The speedy and efficient response to the earthquake in Sichuan province has been described as being far more organised and intense than President Bush’’s treatment of the hurricane in New Orleans. What’’s more, though China is condemned for being inherently closed and secretive, the administration under Premier Wen Jiabao and President Hu Jintao is arguably far freer, both economically and in terms of its interior media, than it has possibly ever been.

I suppose your attitude to participation in the Olympics in Beijing rests on whether or not you consider a boycott to be an effective avenue of protest. Refusing to compete in the games definitely sends a stern message to the host nation. However, by choosing to avoid the spectacle, you could be seen to be shutting yourself off from comment. Wouldn'’t it be better to use the publicity of the games to express reservations with any present nations in a dignified and diplomatic fashion?

What’’s more, at times of such international focus, perhaps we should take a moment to reflect on our own nation’’s behaviour: the Iraq War, rising knife crime, binge drinking, social neglect of the elderly and a thousand other civil problems that Britain is heir to. In that vain, perhaps the disgraceful treatment of ethnic minorities in Nazi Germany would have prompted the unravelling of the evils of racial segregation in America. In short, through the camaraderie and competition of sport we learn more about each other and, possibly more importantly, we learn more about ourselves.

A look at the battle for the UK''s second major airport and how Gatwick hopes to keep its current position by improving auxiliary services such as shops, restaurants and car hire provisions.

By Thomas Pretty

The second largest airport in Britain is London’’s Gatwick; it has managed to secure this position even without the addition of a second runway, unlike nearby Heathrow. It is estimated that over the last twelve months over 35 million passenger passed through the airport, it is hoped however that through further expansion that his number will be increased in the coming years. Naturally part of this attempted increase will include the creation of far more destinations and the construction of auxiliary services such as hotels, car hire desks, shops and restaurants.

Throughout its existence Gatwick has played second fiddle to Heathrow in terms of the country’’s largest and busiest. Despite this primacy Gatwick was the first to realise the importance of having a direct rail link with the capital. The rail ink runs from the airport to Victoria Station, originally it was designed to allow travellers from the centre of London to enter the airport without having to brave the elements at any stage in their journey. This meant constructing a tunnel from the platform to the terminal; the tunnel however posed problems as the Gatwick site was prone to flooding, meaning that travellers were greeted with a site that looked more like Venice than Gatwick. The tunnel was eventually closed but the rail link still exists.

Gatwick’’s position in second however was in no way secured throughout the last century. During the post war period, the site had to compete with Stansted in Essex for government expansion plans. Eventually however Gatwick won the battle and was expanded to become the capital’’s second major airport. Thanks to this success the Crawley area has been provided with a ready source of employment. This employment consists of airport staff, car hire employees, shops assistants as well as waiters and bar staff. Why the government chose Gatwick was probably due to a closer proximity to London as well as being more suitable for the construction of transport links.

As the motorway network was built up Gatwick was suitably placed to take advantage of both the M25 and the M23 meaning that car hire companies were more than happy to exploit this preferential position and advertise it as the perfect gateway to tour the south of England and beyond.

Gatwick has two runways although due to the proximity of these runways they cannot be used simultaneously. Airport chiefs ideally would like to expand the site and construct another runway for increased usage. There is a problem however, as part of the original construction agreement Gatwick was limited to one runway as the surrounding area had a protection order placed upon it. The time limit for this order though is rapidly approaching; within a decade they will be able to challenge the order for further expansion. At this present time, while Gatwick is restricted, Stansted, the site’’s original rival will most probably gain a second runway, considerably improving its passenger numbers; it may even overtake the Gatwick site in the coming years.

For the time being the only option for airport chiefs is to improve the host of services that now fill the terminals. Part of this will implement an improvement in auxiliary services such as shops, restaurants and car hire desks.

The second spot in the UK’’s major airport list is hotly contested. While Heathrow is assured in the prime position, Gatwick, Manchester and Stansted are all battling each other to make number two. With Stansted expansion, Gatwick will find it hard to cling onto second unless they can expand and improve their existing services.

So keep going online and look for your favorite star and the latest scandals, rumors or gossip. Some may be true and some may just be for our entertainment.

By Kristi Ambrose

I have never been that interested in what the “celebrities” were doing. I was too busy living my own exciting life filled with my relationships, work, moving, gaining weight, losing weight among all the other stuff we all go through. But one day my cousin sent me an email titled “Latest Movie Star Exposed!” with reference to a celebrity that was in one of the latest movies. It showed her doing a very scandalous act that was not only funny but astonishing, it made me think, my life is nothing like these famous people!

I was hooked. I wanted to see what they were all doing. Who they were marrying, sleeping with, which ones were pregnant, who had what and would they be around to star in another favorite movie. I also love to search to see who is wearing what and what the newest fashions will be. After all, we know that if Nicole Kidman walked down the street wearing a paper sack, we would all want one. And, if Jennifer Aniston colored her hair purple and green, there would be woman everywhere doing it.

But what is the real reason we all like to watch and copy our favorite celebs? Is it because our lives are just so mundane with everyone doing the same thing. You get your education, get married, have a kid or so. You raise the kids, maybe you stay married or not. But it doesn'’t matter, none of it is as entertaining as the scandals and rumors that go on in the life of our favorite celebrity.

I personally think it has something to do with the roles they play. You see them in the movie portraying someone that can turn into a super hero like Batman, who can “fly” around and save good people from the evil. Then, you find out that he was just a regular little boy who had a horrible childhood experience so you figure that Michael Keaton or Christian Bale are these amazing heroes that can do anything, even in real life.

You see Diane Lane going to Italy on a whim and buying an awesome countryside house and then falling in love and you think she is such a lucky person, you want to know more about her. I must admit though that she is a pretty darned blessed. She is married to celebrity Josh Brolin and step daughter-in-law to my mom’’s favorite person in the celebrity world, Barbara Streisand. In fact, she is coming out in a new movie with Mr. Gere and when my mom saw her hairstyle in the previews, she had to go out and get the same haircut!

We also love to be connected with saying we know a celebrity personally. I have my own story of an up and coming star, Haley Bennett from Music and Lyrics. I have personally known her since she was born, her mother and my mother are best friends. We always look for news and pictures of Haley and just know that if there are ever any nasty scandals associated with her, they cannot be true. No matter if Haley is playing a young ditsy blond or a child of Satan, none of it is really her, she is only playing a part.

By Christine Harrell

The Senate and the House have passed a bill that will provide grants to educate court reporters specializing in realtime communication. These reporters will provide captioning for live television broadcasts, improving access for deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers.

A Short History of Captioning

In 1980, American television started broadcasting the first closed-captioned programs. These broadcasts had subtitles so that deaf and hard of hearing viewers could enjoy programs along with everyone else.

Initially, these captions were limited to pre-recorded broadcasts. However there was soon a demand for captions on news, sporting events, and other live programs. This created a need for people who could transcribe the spoken word in real time.

Certified court reporters have been doing this for decades. Many reporters left the courtrooms for jobs at television stations. Despite the rise in captioning, many programs were still broadcast without captions making them inaccessible to many viewers.

Increased Demand for Realtime-Certified Court Reporters

In 1996, in response to public pressure as well as the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, Congress passed the Telecommunications Act. This mandated that all new English television broadcasts must be captioned by 2006. It also required an increasing percentage of old programs be captioned.

The demand for certified court reporters skyrocketed as television stations searched in vain for people skilled in realtime captioning. Unfortunately as demand went up, the supply went down. Driven in part by fear that technology would make the profession obsolete, enrollment in court reporting schools plummeted.

Many schools closed and the number of graduates dwindled. The average court reporting agency saw their staff decline by 10% over this period. The 2006 deadline came and went and the caption goal was not met. The reporters needed just weren'’t there. Schools were educating only half the realtime reporters needed.

A New Initiative to Train Court Reporters

The Higher Education Reauthorization bill was introduced into Congress in 2007. Part of this bill was a program of grants to educate certified court reporters to meet the demands of realtime captioning.

Interested parties watched as the bill made its way through the tortuous paths of the federal government. In February 2008 the bill was passed by the House of Representatives and in July it passed the Senate.

As of this writing, the bill awaits the President’’s signature and advocates of the measure are cautiously optimistic that it will become a reality later this year.

The grants offered by this bill will offer incentive to aspiring court reporters and should increase enrollment. Over time, this should increase the supply of certified court reporters and ease the burden felt by both television stations and courtrooms over the lack of qualified candidates.

It will take time before the effects of the bill are felt in the industry. It is but one step in the process. Organizations such as the National Court Reporters Association continue to educate the public on the need for more court reporters in the future.

When you have purchased your airline ticket, you may have to pay additional charges at the check in counter or inside the plane.

By Ron Subs

With the increase in the price of fuel, airlines are doing what they can to stay afloat. As a way to compensate for the high cost of fuel, airlines have opted to increase the price of airfare. Along with the increase of the price of an airline ticket, airlines are opting to charge additional and somewhat hidden fees for standard and optional services.

These fees are not included in the price of the ticket, but you will have to pay for them at the ticket counter or to the stewardess on the plane. Therefore the ticket holder has no idea of the additional charges, which can incur over and above the price of the ticket. These charges can be for the first checked-in bag, the second check-in bag, an overweight bag, or an oversized bag. They could also include the cost of any beverages, meal or snacks. There is a list of 25 additional charges the airlines may charge you for once you get to the airport or inside the plane. Some of the other additional charges will include in-flight entertainment, pillow or blanket, an infant on your lap, and even your carry-on bag.

Each airline differs in the cost of the additional charges and the flights, which will incur the charges. As an example, regarding a flight from Tyler, TX to Phoenix, AZ only one airline charged for the first checked-in bag, but all the airlines charged for the second bag. As for meals and beverages, there were only one or two airlines charging the additional charge on these items. None of the airlines charged an additional fee for the carry-on bag. So it is unclear when or how much these charges will be. Some airlines however do not charge any additional charges other than the second checked-in bag fee.

These can be deceiving to the unseasoned traveler. In fact to incur an unplanned charge can be quite a shock to the person who is unaware of these charges. There is a way to know about these charges prior to making the trip. If you normally purchase your tickets online, there are web sites like Compare Airline Fees who can tell you the additional charges you can expect on the airline you are flying. However, you might want to learn about the charges for your flight before you decide on which airline to fly. You can check out the charges on the web site that will tell you the additional fees such as Compare Airline Fares to find out, which airline will charge the additional fee. Then click to the discount fare web sites such as Orbitz or priceline.
to find the airfare that is the best value for you. This way you will have the information before you buy an airline ticket.

By Kristi Ambrose

Who doesn'’t love online shopping?!? Or better yet, who doesn'’t love discount online shopping? I'’m not talking about sites, with used items or non brand-name items. I'’m talking about sites like Wal-Mart, Kmart, and Target. These sites are terrific for anyone, whether you'’re single, have kids, are older, married, male, female; it doesn'’t matter. Everyone and anyone can use sites like this. You can be sure you will pay less but the quality won'’t be less. These sites have everything you could possibly want, here’’s just a small list of what you can look forward to when finding these sites online:

Apparel
Electronics
Home and beauty
Garden & patio
Music, movies, video games
Vision
Pets
Photo Center
Jewelry
and much much more!

Just because these items are cheaper, doesn'’t mean that they'’re not brand-name products. Some of the brand names included on sites such as these are Apple, Bushnell, Canon, Kodak, Sharp, JVC, Netgear, Fisher Price, Uniden etc. here are just a few price comparisons between these discount shopping stores and regular stores; by regular stores I'’m talking about department stores such as Sears, Best Buy, OfficeMax, etc..

Canon Vixia HV30 High Definition Mini DV camcorder with 10 times optical zoom & mini SD memory card slot
Discount Store $799
Department Store $1000

Lego Mars Mission Set, MB-01 Command Base
Discount Store $50
Department Store $90

Sony PlayStation 2 console
Discount Store $115
Department Store hundred $40

Even by looking at the few items above, you can see that by shopping at stores like Wal-Mart, Kmart, target YOU could be saving a lot of money that you could keep for other things like bills, groceries etc. Not only can you save $20 or $40 here and there but you could also be saving hundreds of dollars. In a few months time these $20, $40, hundred dollars savings could really end up adding up. I think these sites are absolutely perfect for people with kids, not only can you find their school clothes here, shoes, but you can also find other things such as school supplies, video games, sports equipment, and much more.

To be honest, even people like me shop at Wal-Mart, Kmart or target when looking for a low price. Usually the only place I shop is at Gap, Best buy, and Crate & Barrel. But if I'’m looking for a low price on something for example, like a laptop, a video game console, a camera, or anything else electronic, Wal-Mart is the first store I always visit! I mean come on who doesn'’t love saving money! I know I do! The great thing about sites like Wal-Mart online, is that a lot of the time they will also have things like specials and free shipping which also sweetens the deal a whole lot! So come on, check them out, its the least you can do if you'’re looking to save a little money on that new stereo system, shoes, video game console or anything else you want!

Prank callers seem to be everywhere these days. They call when you least expect them. But there are things you can do.

By Brad Martinson

Prank callers have been very rampant nowadays; they are everywhere; they are widespread.

They would call you at home in the middle of the night and tell you jokes which might even make you smile. This would be acceptable, as you could just shrug it off your shoulders of maybe just laugh about it. Some callers, on the other hand calls you and tells you things which would give you the willies or worse yet, play practical jokes on you. Practical jokes, which may become very serious depending on the mood of your prank caller. This is not something you could just shrug your shoulder with. Sometimes, their pranks are unbearable, nerve-wrecking, it could give you a heart attack. These callers don'’t get to choose who they would play their pranks on.

These prank callers would call you in the most untimely hour of the day, would ask you to stip off and do the act with them right then and there over the phone. They could call you in your office and would tell you that your house is on fire, or worse yet, call you on your mobile phone in the middle of a meeting and tell you that your 6 year old daughter has been kidnapped. How much worse could this get? You could easily die upon hearing these such heartless words, and for all we know, it is just another prank call.

Prank callers could even become worse. They could result to blackmailing you on some things. They could possibly stalk you and get more information about you. There is and endless limitation as to what they could do, especially if they know that you are not doing anything about it. They are a real pain in the ass.

People who have been victimized by these callers should not take these sitting down. If you are on of their victims, you must do your part to be able to stop and apprehend these prank callers. Do your part on ensuring a better and a more safe place for you and your children to live a happy and peaceful life.

These wrongdoings must come to an end. Search for these prank callers online by using their phone numbers. Better yet, report them to the cops. They will do their jobs of apprehending them. Let us prove to these people that there’’s no place in this world for such acts, and that those who does these acts have a place behind bars.
