Learning to speed read will greatly improve your speed and comprehension of all written material.

By Francis Hesse

One of the most important questions regarding reading whether it is books, or newspapers that one wishes to read in as short a time as possible is how to speed read and at the same time also absorb the required information as well.

Thus, to understand how to speed read one needs to determine beforehand what the items of information is one seeking and then tailoring the reading according to the level of information required.

Getting A Rough Idea

In case you are just looking to get a rough idea about a piece of text it is only necessary that you browse through the contents as quickly as possible and then get the required details and in this simple manner get your answer to how to speed read.

However, at other times you may needs to understand the whole concept in as short a period of time as possible and for this you will require understanding different techniques that will help answer your question as to how to speed read.

Some possible solutions to the question of how to speed read include lowering the fixing time as well as reducing the hop-back time and even increasing a block of text in a word count.

The first solution to the question as to how to speed read requires reading a block of text in its entirety and within a certain time and in this way, one effectively gathers the required information in the shortest possible time.

Another answer to the question of how to speed read is increasing the word count because this will greatly simplify learning how to speed read and in fact, this easy to follow method requires only that you keep the content of the text that you are going to read a little farther away from your eyes and so be able to read more words at one glance and in less time as well.

It is also possible to understand how to speed read by reducing hop-back time and in fact, all that it requires is for you to avoid having to read a previous part of the text by opting to use a pencil or even an indicator or just your finger and running any of them directly below the text that you are reading.

By doing this, your eyes will begin to trail the indicator that you are using and thus enables smoother reading and consequently fewer hop-backs.

For some people, reading means a lot of tedium, and it is then up to them to learn to speed read and thus be able to read as many as ten to twelve words per second rather than just four or five words that is achieved when reading at standard speed.

For people that are intellectually oriented or even for students, learning how to speed read can make a significant difference to their learning abilities and thus it is recommended that they follow the simple tips mentioned above.

By Patrick Omari

With September approaching, many people are preparing to take the new and exciting step into University life. Being a recent graduate myself, I thought I would take a trip down memory lane and give people essential advice for surviving the transition to student land.

It is most likely that if you are going to University for the first time, you will be living in student accommodation. Obviously with so many students staying in so many rooms, your place of residence is not going to be the Ritz, so don'’t go away expecting luxury. Of course some rooms are better than others, however, they are usually very basic.

There are a few ways you can prepare, in order to assure you do not want to leave after your first night. Firstly, bring you own pillows. It is more likely than not, the one you will find upon your arrival will be as flat as a pancake and will not make for a comfortable night’’s sleep. Secondly, if possible bring two duvets, one to put underneath you and one to cover you. Don'’t worry, beds don'’t usually have metal springs sticking out, however, the mattresses can be very thin, making the bed hard and lumpy. I actually found my bed was pretty comfortable, however, for added luxury create a cocoon for yourself. This can also help in the Winter, as rooms can sometimes get cold. Make sure you bring a hot water bottle with you as well.

A necessary at University is a washing basket. This sounds like a dull item to buy, however, if you have one you will be very grateful for it. It becomes quite an inconvenience having to search around for black plastic bags, which look unsightly in the corner of your room and rip when you pick them up to go to the laundry room. Furthermore, you do not want to have to take up the draw space you have, hiding away dirty clothes and stepping over clothes left on the floor just makes it more difficult to get to bed after a drunken night out. Before you leave home or as soon as possible after you arrive, why not take a quick trip to Wilkinsons, to buy one of their latest pop up baskets.

It can often be scary and unsettling moving away from home for the first time. Therefore, to make an empty shell feel homely make sure you come fully loaded with photographs, posters and personal trinkets. Covering your walls with removable decorations is not usually frowned upon and some kind of board is often provided for you to pin things too, but don'’t forget to bring plenty of blue tack and pins. I would also recommend unpacking and personalising your room, as soon as possible, to lesson the chance of feeling uncomfortable in your new surroundings and lonely.

A further tip to feeling less segregated from your close friends and family is to find an internet connection quickly. If you are lucky enough to have a lap top, combined with internet access in your own room then great, however, if not just find out the nearest place you can access it from. Having MSN Messenger and Facebook at your finger tips can mean you can keep in touch easily with those you miss and for free.

The internet is indeed great, but there is just a small word of warning i can offer. Try not to rely on your family and old friends for comfort too much. It is better if you put aside a small amount of time to communicate with them or save it for if you are feeling particularly low and concentrate on making new friends. The quicker you socialise, the easier you will settle in your new environment. Although it can be tempting, make an effort not to hide away in your room. On the same note, if you have come to University with a friend, try not to spend all of your time with them. It will be better for both of you to form friendship groups and then you will both have people to introduce to one another. This could potentially form a large social network.

If in Fresher’’s week you feel that everyone around you has already formed big groups of friends when you haven'’t, don'’t panic. More often than not they have just grouped together with fellow house or hall mates. You may do the same, however, you will find as the weeks go on, people will break away and become friends with the people they want to be with. On many occasions, your fellow house mates will become some of your closest friends, however, they may not. There are so many other opportunities, as well as so much time to settle in and get to know different people properly.

Upon your arrival at University, there will most probably be some kind of “Fresher’’s Fair” promoting every kind of club available. Many societies are keen to attract new members and joining one is a great way to meet new people. However, if you simply do not want to, don'’t worry. You will not be alone in your decision. Many people are just as happy staying at home or going out partying of their own free will. If you do not like being alone, however, why not invite a few people you have met over to watch a DVD, suggest going to a house party or a night out clubbing. If you make the effort you may well find you have more in common with certain individuals than first thought and it is likely that your invitations with eventually be reciprocated.

When your student loan comes through, it is very easy to get carried away and feel like the richest person on earth. If your anything like me, you will end up with a load of DVDs that you wanted at the time, but have watched about once. Furthermore, spending fifty pounds on alcohol in one night may seem good at the time, if not so great the next day. Without sounding like a kill joy, be careful about what you spend your money on. It is not pleasant when you reach the last few weeks of term and have no money to even buy food. There are only so many occasions you can eat 7 pence noodles.

Where food is concerned, try to shop sensibly and not just waste you money on other things so that you are forced to survive on the bare necessities. Moreover, remember your parents taught you that fruit and vegetables were good for a reason and just because you live on your own does not mean you should stop eating them. Living off bread alone is likely to give you scurvy. One of my house mates tried to live off bread whilst simultaneously taking vitamins to substitute the goodness he was lacking. The results were not pleasant. Extreme vomiting and stomach cramps.

There is one final thing I will mention to help you prepare before you embark on the adventure that is University life and that is the joy of fire alarms. Weekly fire alarm tests took place at my University. Sound good? It definitely is a necessity, however, at 9am in the morning, it is not welcome. A few times I had only just gone to bed and it took me quite a while to realise where i even was, so be aware. I don'’t know why they insist on doing it so early, I think it is just their joke on students. Furthermore, don'’t expect these to be the only times the alarm goes off. It can sound in the middle of the day, when you are trying to write an essay in the library and everyone has to evacuate outside. The middle of the night is not a nice time to be woken up either, especially when you have to stand outside half asleep in the rain and snow.

University is a great experience and one that you will never forget. I hope with these few tips and warnings you can go away feeling just a little bit more prepared for the craziness that lies ahead.

By Christine Harrell

So, you'’ve decided your going to home school right from the beginning! But, what do you need? Where do you start? Well, to be honest, every homeschooler will say something a bit different when answering these questions. But, at the same time, there are some common ideas that many families agree were essential homeschooling supplies when they were at the preschool homeschool stage.

Books, Books, And More Books

Easy access to books helps develop a love of reading and is truly an essential of any preschool homeschool. If you haven'’t already, start creating your own home library and keep all the books within easy reach of your child.

If you need some ideas, take a look around online. There is a wide range of possibilities for excellent books for a preschool homeschool. Look for some reviews from other homeschoolers, and select what you think you and your child would enjoy.

Get Yourself (And Your Child) A Library Card

Along these same lines, make sure you patronize your local library frequently! Get to know the librarian’’s name(s), and come regularly. Help your child select books, and check out some for yourself too, involving your child in the process whenever possible. It’’s never too early for a homeschooler to learn how to use the library system!

Libraries also sometimes offer special events (that are usually free!) in addition to regular programs for young children like story hour. It’’s a great way learn about new things, and sometimes, you might even get to meet new friends there too!

Make Learning The Basics Fun With Board Games

Young children can learn a lot through games. Some board games are obviously educational, but others are just plain fun; and even they can teach preschoolers a lot. In addition to the subject matter of the game, a child can learn things like how to take turns, basic counting, following the game rules, and depending on the game, number recognition and a bit of reading. Not bad for a “game!” You can find some really unique games in homeschooling supply catalogues and online, but regular “old” games like Connect Four, Candy Land, and Checkers are perfect too.

Manipulatives For Math And More

Manipulatives are most often associated with teaching math, but are really any model, block, tile, etc. that can assist a student in working out a problem regardless of the subject. In addition to the wide array of manipulatives available for exploring math, there are also science, and phonics manipulatives that can make learning new skills more “hands on” and, for certain learning styles, easier.

Manipulatives are a great resource for the introduction of these concepts in the preschool homeschool, and are available online or anywhere else where you might find homeschooling supplies.

As you continue on your homeschooling journey, you'’ll surely find other homeschooling supplies that you would describe as essential. Products are always changing, and of course, our children are always changing.

Each year homeschooling you will also gain a better idea of your child’’s learning style, and interests, as well as your own homeschooling philosophy. But, if you start off with these tried and true homeschooling supplies for the preschool homeschool, you and your child will definitely enjoy your very first year of homeschooling!

By Lana Hawkins

An education is important to any person. But for a single mom, a college education may be near to impossible. With the time constraints of raising a child, working a job, and running a household, it is almost impossible for a single mom to be able to take the time to get her education. Any online college education is one of the best ways for a mom to get an education and at the same time have time for her family. An online college education can save the mom not only time and effort, but also in these days of high gasoline prices, money.

Most online colleges are asynchronous. This means that the single mom can go to college or go to class any time of day or night. The single mom will be able to interact with the class on her own schedule by adding comments to those posted by the other students on the classroom chat board. The instructor will give out an assignment for the day or week and a mom can complete it at any time as long as she completes an assignment before deadline. If the baby is taking a nap, mom can jump on her computer and be able to type out her lessons or respond to other students or instructor without interruption.

Another benefit of online college classes for the single mom, is that your identity is anonymous. The people see your name in words, but they know nothing about you. You don'’t have the social stigma of having a child or not going to class because your child is sick. You are equal in that classroom. Gender, race, or any physical appearance is a mute point within an online class. You are there to express yourself in words and those words are taken literally, because they cannot be judged by nonverbal interaction, your appearance or inclinations in your voice. What you say is what you say and you'’re graded for what you say.

Not only time is saved when you take an online college course as a single mom, but money to saved too. Even though online courses are sometimes a little bit more expensive than traditional brick-and-mortar courses, the amount of time it takes you to drive to class, attend a class and drive back home, is also money that is being spent. Gas money and other expenses add up quickly. In the online college, a single mom may stay in her own home. If research needs to be done, it can be done on the University online library. There is no packing the kid up and taking them to daycare. Just find your seat and go to class. You can simply roll out of bed, get a cup of coffee, and sit in front of the computer and work toward getting an education.

Most online courses are offered in eight to ten week segments. This gives you a chance to go to school for eight to ten weeks and then take a week off. You will get the credits, you'’ll earn your degree, and you'’ll be on your way to setting up a better lifestyle, both financially and emotionally for both you and your child.

Obtaining your accredited bachelors degree online will enable you to take advantage of carrying out your business on the Internet.

By derek smiley

Obtaining your accredited bachelors degree online will enable you to take advantage of carrying out your business on the Internet. Many on line degree course combine information skills and commerce classes as a whole and will allow you to receive the necessary training and gain entry to the dimensions of the World Wide Web. Another term for this could be a distance learning bachelors degree.

Similar to any college, the on line universities have admission criteria which must be met and is relevant to which ever bachelor degree you choose to study for. High school qualifications or an equivalent GED certification are the basic requirements and most on line degree programs insist on a minimum of three years related work experience as well as a degree at a 2.5 GPA or higher level. Choosing the course would not be too difficult as on line bachelor degree programs take any number of students at a time.

When enrolling for an accredited online bachelors degree course make sure you make your application to several universities. Its a bonus that when completing your degree on line you do not have to live in or near to the town of your chosen university. As long as you have Internet access you can live anywhere in the world and successfully complete your course, this is also open for a bachelor business degree online.

You would, of course, be required to discipline yourself and dedicate sufficient time to carry out your studies to keep up with the course you are doing. If you do not possess self discipline, then it is fair to say that this type of studying is definitely not for you and you should really consider taking your degree by the conventional learning method.

Listed below are just some of the benefits of doing your bachelors degrees online.

An on line degree can be taken in less time that the normal four years for a traditional degree course. You can usually complete your degree within a period of three years, and depending on your previous college credit, it is actually possible to finish your degree in less than eight months.

The on line course gives you the flexibility to study at any time of the day or night and in the comfort of your own home.

As long as you finish the course within the given time frames you may take things at your own pace.

The fees for your tuition when doing your degree on line are easy to pay as you simply apply for a student loan. There are, in some cases, systems in place which allow you to pay as you go throughout the course.

You do not have to give up your current employment to carry out your studies for your on line degree. This has a double bonus as you can use your heard earned pay to cover the cost of your on line degree tuition fees. This may be for a bachelor of science degree or even a bachelor of nursing degree.

Another idea is to ask your employers if they would be prepared to make a contribution to the costs of your degree course, and if your new qualifications can be used to their advantage in the long run, they would probably agree to this. If however, they choose not to help you out, there are federal grants and student loans available which have low rates of interest for repayments.

In today’’s modern world more and more people are studying for acredited online bachelors degrees and finding this an excellent way to improve their education and career prospects for the future.

By Christine Harrell

As homeschoolers, we naturally want the best home schooling supplies and curriculum for our children. Each child is an individual though and what homeschool textbooks and supplies may be perfect for one child may not be the best fit for another. Luckily, there are lots of options! But, there’’s no way you could ever test out each option for each child, even if you only had one child.

So, what’’s a homeschooler to do? What we do best, research! Finding as much information as you can about different homeschool textbooks and supplies will allow you to select materials that are of high quality and that will work for you and your child.

Talk to Other Home Schoolers

This may seem like an easy answer but just because you know and love other homeschoolers, doesn'’ mean you always know what homeschool textbooks and supplies they'’e using, have tried, or would recommend. So, find whomever you know that homeschools and talk to them, all of them.

Because you know these people personally, and their kids too, you can have the added benefit of insight as to what similarities they share with you and your children; and how the home schooling supplies they have liked may be something you and your child might like (or not like) also.

Read Online Reviews

With the wide use of the internet, you can now find a lot of help with your search for the best homeschooling supplies by reading reviews at the various online homeschool textbook stores. There are countless online reviews about curriculum for homeschool on various homeschool forums and message boards, as well as your state or local yahoo group. Many have a designated spot for reviews, or, take matters into your own hands and just get a discussion going about favorite home schooling supplies.

Many homeschoolers also maintain blogs now about what they are doing, and their life as homeschoolers. Some also post online reviews of the home schooling materials they have experience with. This is a fantastic way to benefit from another homeschooler’’s experience and opinion of home schooling supplies.

Create a Relationship With a Homeschool Book Store You Can Trust

If you are lucky enough, you may, through word of mouth or your own experience, find a homeschool book store that you can trust to only offer the best curriculum for homeschool. This way, you'’ll know that if they carry it, it’’s got to be good.

One marker of a good homeschool book store is that it is run by fellow (and usually very experienced) homeschoolers. Most shops that cater to homeschoolers do so because they enjoy and want to help other homeschoolers. They too know that the search for the best homeschool textbooks and curriculm is a very important, and potentially time consuming process. You can benefit from their support and knowledge, and in return, patronize their shops!

Of course no matter how much you research curriculum for homeschool you'’ll still need to use it to be able to accurately judge the fit between the homeschool textbook and your child. But, if you try to utilize these ideas (and make sure the store has a good return policy!), then you'’ll make your search for high quality homeschool textbooks and curriculum much more easy and successful!

The costs to go to college to get a decent education are costly. Today students are finding it hard to get a good education without first taking out a student loan. Evan more students face student loan consolidation at some point, so what are some solutions?

Could the rich become the poor, and the poor become the rich? Could those in education today, find they are more in debt than those who simply went to work out of high school? These are big concerns, and as more students have a need to get student loans and student loan consolidation, the educated are facing big debts.

Stop! It doesn'’t have to be like that. You can get a good education, and still find yourself in a more prosperous situation after all of it. And no it does not mean having to search for all the half price items you want to buy, but can be done consciously without much effort.

The first point is research. And here a budget becomes important. If you have never done a budget before, don'’t fret because it is easy. Once you make up a budget, you will find that it gets easier, and you won'’t face the same problems that money others face, that don'’t make up a budget in advance.

Making a budget is simple. First you need to find out the main concern. When going college and considering taking out a student loan or student loan consolidation, the major factor is your education, and tuition. So, you would write tuition and next to it write the necessary costs.

Then you would consider what else. Books and other educational material could be another item. Then go forward to personal expenses. Where will you be living? How much is rent. Add all these items.

Next consider what else you need to include. Remember food, leisure, partying, etc. Once you have this total figure, you can figure out your position. This will allow you to plan ahead.

Now it is time to consider how you can make savings. Consider where you will be living. Could you find a good college without having to pay expensive rent in expensive areas?

Is there just as good a college locally to your home that does not need you moving and paying expensive rent? Just this alone could save you thousands. In a student loan, a thousand today, means paying back thousands tomorrow.

A part time job is another solution. Some companies in the field you hope to work in, after your education sometimes provide apprenticeships which could pay you and pay for your college education.

Thinking smart ahead can produce you results which many others won'’t see. Get creative. It does not mean missing any meals; it does not have to cost you. But often student loans, and student loan consolidation leaves many people in debt. You can break out, and have a future with more prosperity in your life.

Being a good student means you have the ability to think. This is because the power of reasoning does not come automatically along with your intelligence.

By Jim Brown

Being a good student means you have the ability to think. This is because the power of reasoning does not come automatically along with your intelligence. They are a separate entity. It is an ability and we the ones who have to develop them. Sharp thinking should be nourished and put to use until it grows because this will lead to a great mind.

Here are some useful tips that you can do to develop a sharp thinking:

1.	Gauge your actions versus the consequences.

We learn through experiencing things. It is called applied learning. But our actions can either go into two ways; good outcome or bad outcome. What we should do is to be able to measure what actions we have to do against all the consequences whatever they may be, think before you act, so to speak.

2.	Daydream.

Daydreaming can produce better and deep insights about life and about things we seldom think about. There we experience what we want and define what will happen. It can also make our minds be more creative. They say daydreaming is just a nuisance and a disturbance but actually when done appropriately will exceed that of the sharpest mind.

3.	Answer thought-provoking questions.

You have got to challenge the limit of your mind by provoking how far your answers can go. How appropriate your answers are and how satisfying they can be to the question.

4.	Learn to invent.

You have to discover how to do things your own way and invent it using different methods. In this way your mind will perceive all as different paths toward the same direction. This is a good way of saying that whatever path you choose, you will never get lost. Do not rely on pre-defined ways because sticking to this and only this will not get you anywhere should something come up.

5.	Find different angles of the problem.

If you are presented with a problem it is better that you learn how to look at it in different angles so that you can solve it also in different ways. Looking at a problem in a defined manner will not bring as many solutions as there could be.

6.	Comparison is better.

When given different situations compare them to one another. In the same manner when you are only given one option, you have you make another one and compare the two. This way your mind will seek better if not best option among all.

7.	Definition of terms.

You need to be able to define the terms you will use in order for you to be clear on what you really mean. Sometimes words can be used wrongly that is why confusion and misunderstanding come into play.

8.	Have several opinions.

If you are facing a certain issue, you will need different opinions regarding this to come up with your own way of handling the issue. Great minds are open to different outlooks.

9.	Be able to put yourself in someone else’’s shoes.

Great minds do not think only of themselves and what they do. They also think of how someone will react, feel and think of the tables are turned.

10.	Write stuffs.

The power of pen on paper can be greater than any great mind. They can remember even the faintest ideas while great minds can forget.

11.	Think one step ahead.

Learning English is something that you really have to do if you want to make it big in today''s world.

By Amy Nutt

Learning English is something that you really have to do if you want to make it big in today’’s world. Between the type of English common in the United States and the one in the United Kingdom, most of the world’’s population is represented in terms of people that know how to speak the language. All of the major business is transacted in that language and everyone that happens to be rich, successful or otherwise powerful in the world today learned English at some point in their life.

Now that it has been established that learning English is essential, it is time to think about the different times in a person’’s life that learning it can be ideal. While there is no one particular ideal age there are times when it can be better to do so and those times are discussed at length below.

From Birth

The absolutely most ideal age at which learning English can happen is at birth. When a baby speaks their first words, if those words are in English, then it will be the first language that they learn. This also makes it the easiest language for them to learn as many babies never end up learning another language after they have learned their initial one. Some people just have a mental block when it comes to learning languages, which is why English as their first language is absolutely the best way to go.

During Primary Schooling

If a child has not learned English as their first language, then the next best time to get them to learn it would be during the time in their life when they are thinking about doing primary schooling. Primary schooling is extremely important and allows children to expand their knowledge and grow on multiple fronts during the second group of formative years in their life (the first being their pre-school years). Because of the rapid rate at which children tend to learn at this age, English language training is definitely a good idea.

During Secondary Schooling

If a child has gone through the initial and primary school years of their life without learning English, then you will want to make sure that you start them on an English language learning course right away. While secondary school students are still learning a lot, the information that high school gives them is largely specialized information. This is quite different from the formative study they undertake in primary school which in turn means that teaching them something as basic as a new way of speaking is a lot harder to do.

During Post-Secondary Schooling

While a large argument is currently raging across academic circles at which time is better to learn English between secondary and post-secondary schooling, most people tend to believe that post-secondary schooling provides an environment that makes learning a new language a lot easier to do. People are exposed to new ideas and concepts that might completely change the way they look at and think about life in post-secondary school and that makes taking on big new challenges like learning English easier to do than it would be in secondary school.

As an Adult

It is possible for an out of school adult to learn English, but it is at the same time a lot harder to do. The thing that makes it easier for adults to learn it sometimes is the fact that adults that are out of school tend to have a far more disciplined approach to things like this and for that reason have the ability to grasp information pertinent to their life at a relatively quick pace.

As children grow out of their little pants and are ready to begin their teens, many parents wonder if they should continue with the homeschooling program.

By Uchenna Ani-Okoye

As children grow out of their little pants and are ready to begin their teens, many parents wonder if they should continue with the homeschooling program. They fear that colleges may not give equal opportunities to a child educated at home.

Many fears of this kind were put to rest when 2 homeschooled boys got admission into Harvard. Harvard does not require a high school diploma for gaining admission to their degree program. Many colleges are more interested in the knowledge and behaviour of the homeschooled children rather than their high school diplomas. In fact, other things being similar many colleges prefer homeschoolers because of the diversity and richness they bring to their college life.

Admission requirements may vary. While some colleges require the child to appear for the SAT, others may need a general equivalency diploma. And some may not care for any tests at all. The criterion may vary depending on the college that you wish to apply to. But, college courses really do not require any high school background or special training.

It is common to come across parents who frantically try to shift out their home school children to high schools because they fear unavailability of college admissions. But college admissions are open to all educated individuals, regardless of whether they are educated at home or at a public school.

Homeschooling and the family

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, almost 1.1 million children underwent homeschooling in 2005 alone. That’’s a lot of children. Once upon a time, homeschooling used to be a radical statement - something like a declaration of independence. It was the conservative Christians who advocated homeschooling in the ‘’80s and legalized it in every State. But the typical homeschooler of the day is not religiously motivated.

Recent surveys indicate that parents are actually quite fed up of the public school systems where much of the learning is superficial and compulsory. They are also concerned about negative school environment ranging from drugs and abuse to negative peer pressure. As a result, we have a surprising mix of people who form the homeschooling world of today. They cut across all religious and regional borders. Their main aim is providing meaningful and productive learning through a method that strengthens the bond between the various members of the family.

All these families have one thing in common - a long enduring commitment to the sanctity of childhood. The children in these families are accorded a primary position. Many believe, and rightly so, that homeschooling allows parents to bring up children in a more natural and nurturing environment. Public schools can make one nervous, diffident and downright mean. Children who get schooled at home are protected from these damaging negative influences till they reach an age where they can handle it.

Homeschooling draws the whole family into the almost religious task of schooling. Everyone is put to work. The parents together form a bond with the children. Any experience can be turned into an educational experience. Both the parents are aware of exactly what is going into their child’’s head. Parents also have greater control on the kind of religious and moral values that the child imbibes. Even watching a movie together can become a learning experience. Trips to the libraries and other places become educational as well as recreational.

A homeschooling family is primarily dependent on the income of one earning member. That means that often spending has to be curtailed and proper planning of expenditure is a must. This helps to bring the family members together and everybody gets involved in the process of saving money.

Having a parent at home to supervise, to nurture and care for the children brings with it a lot of love and caring. Even your husband chips in and there just is no room for boredom. Yes, problems do crop up, and there are a lot of misgivings in your mind. But when you know that your kids can always count on you, and your kids know it too, then homeschooling becomes a richly rewarding experience.

Any location that already has exiting golf courses is going to be a place where a golf college could do well.

By Andy West

There are three major reasons that someone might take an interest in learning more about golf colleges. The most obvious reason is that the individual is a college student who is interested in pursuing an education in the field of golf. The second major reason is that the individual already has a degree or experience in golfing and wants to get a job at a golf college. And the third reason is that the individual works in some aspect of the industry that would be interested in marketing to people at a golf college; for example, someone who works as a writer for golf magazines may want to know more about the interests of people attending a golf college. For any of these people, it is going to be important to pay primary attention to those golf colleges that are located in areas where the school is likely to do well over time.

Golf colleges can be opened almost anywhere. In fact, many different golf colleges have started to spring up in recent years because more and more people are starting to realize that this is a degree program which might be worth pursuing. Any location that already has existing golf courses or where there is enough land for a new golf school to build a golf course of its own is going to be a place where the golf college could theoretically gain a following and do well for itself. However, it’’s not wise for those people interested in golf colleges to bank on the hopes of a new school. Instead, it’’s best to look into those schools which are located in areas that have a long standing tradition of golf history.

While a school may do well in any location, the goal of a golf school is to make sure that the individual who graduates from it is going to be able to get a good job in the industry. To be able to guarantee this, a good golf school must be located in a city that already has a thriving golf industry. The places that are best for golf colleges are those places where people would be likely to go on a golf vacation. Any destination that is already known for its golf is going to be a place that is going to offer opportunities for employment in the golf industry after graduation. People seeking to attend a good golf school will want to look not only at the schools but also at the amateur and professional golf industries in the area.

The top areas for golf schools today are those areas that people will automatically recognize as being places which are great for golfers. Although there are plenty of these places throughout the nation, there are four areas that really stand out: San Diego, Phoenix, Myrtle Beach and Orlando. These four major cities are destinations where people regularly go to golf. Golf colleges that are located in these cities are going to offer what students and potential employees or business partners are seeking from a golf school. The people who are working at these colleges are going to be people who probably have an extensive amount of experience in the local golf industry. This means that these people will have the skills that are necessary to make golf colleges run well but more importantly it means that they are going to be great networking contacts for anyone on a golf school campus who wants to be integrated into the local golf scene. These are factors that should not be underestimated when choosing a niche college that is focused on a specific career path.

When a parent takes on the responsibility of educating his or her child, home school burnout is one of the more common issues they have to deal with.

By Uchenna Ani-Okoye

When a parent takes on the responsibility of educating his or her child, home school burnout is one of the more common issues they have to deal with. There are many reasons that lead to this burnout: an illness, a new baby, added responsibility, changes in routine etc.

The symptoms of burnout vary from lack of patience to overeating and crying without any apparent reasons. Surprisingly, a burnout need not be such a bad thing. It is a wake-up call - an indicator that things are not going well and that you need to reschedule. Reversing or avoiding a burnout is possible if you get fair warning.

Firstly, lower your expectations. Do not be a perfectionist. Take the good days with the bad. Next, when something does not seem to work, look for alternative methods. Flexibility is a key factor. If tension starts mounting, take a break. When necessary, change the style of teaching. For instance, small children love to take on their spellings when they quiz an adult.

Avoid overkill. Do not pack too many activities for the sake of socializing your child. A worn out mom means a grouchy kid and that means no happiness. Get support from your spouse or a neighbour or a support group. Don'’t try to achieve everything by yourself. Homeschooling means ‘’happy schooling'’ - don'’t forget that.

Home school - Field trips

If you are going over a particular subject with the family and feel that a field trip would be beneficial, then that’’s what you should do - go for a trip. If you are attached to a support group, you can plan to include other children too.

Here are some guidelines that will help you plan:
1) Collect the rates
2) Allowed ages
3) Special highlights
4) Size of the group
5) Timings
6) Eating facilities

Inform your support group of all these details well in advance so that the necessary circulars may be sent out. On the appointed day, arrange to meet with other parents and children in a particular place. Plan the mode of travel and reach the place at least 10 minutes in advance.

The field trip is not just fun. So, let your kids bring their writing material. Allow them time to stare and admire. Do not hurry them along. Collect data beforehand so that you can clear doubts. Get help from a guide, if necessary. And most importantly, have fun and enjoy the time you spend with your children.

By Uchenna Ani-Okoye

Grading in homeschooling is done by the teacher-in-charge. In most of the cases, this means mom! In this situation, grading can get a bit tricky because it can be a little difficult to grade your own child.

There is no benchmark against which you can evaluate your child’’s performance. In most cases, you also have no awareness of how well other children are doing. So, obviously the traditional method of grading is perhaps not the best method to follow.

When grading a child undergoing homeschooling, it is more important to assess whether the child has understood the subject that is being taught. Inherent in this is the fact that if the child has not understood something, you will go over it again. This will work in your child’’s favour in 2 ways.

Firstly, the child knows that if he or she fails to catch on, the topic will be repeated till it is mastered. Secondly, the child also knows that once the topic has been mastered, he or she will get full credit for his hard work. Getting full reward for the hard work put in is a great motivational factor, especially for kids.

When assessing your child’’s abilities, do not allow emotions to overcrowd your rationale. Do not yield to the cries and tears of your child if he or she resists certain topics or subjects. If mastering these skills is necessary, then you as the teacher (and not as the parent alone) have to go over the topic over and over till it sinks in.

When dealing with tougher concepts, the child may get restless and may even show frustration or belligerence. When the child is still young and unable to understand the importance of his lessons, it is your responsibility to see to it that the child develops the skill set necessary for future growth.

In case you belong to a state that requires yearly tests, this will help you to judge your child’’s ability vis-a-vis his peers. Even if it is not mandatory, you may want to test your child every year. These tests will reveal the variations in the child’’s learning pattern. It may show up unexpected areas of strength and hitherto unknown areas of weakness. This enables you to structure your teaching to cover the areas that are weak, and build upon the areas that are strong.

In case your state requires a home school report card, keep a record of the yearly development and scores of your child. Include pertinent areas like punctuality, discipline etc in the report. You may also need to keep a record of the number of working days and attendance schedules.

While grading your child, make sure that you use as many external tests as possible. There are several websites that deal with the various age groups, and allow free downloading of question papers. This is an excellent and cost-effective method to assess your child. Homeschooling, if done in the proper manner, will boost the child’’s confidence because he will be studying to satisfy his natural curiosity. The scores therefore will reflect his true intelligence.

A Gurukul provides a type of education that ranges from how to live a life, to cooking and to running a business, among other things.

By Victor Epand

A Gurukul is a type of ancient Vedic school in India in which students go to the house of their teacher, or the guru, to live and study under his care. The students are all treated the same no matter what their social castes are or how elevated in society his family is. The students not only study, but also render menial services such as cleaning, washing clothes, collecting wood and water, etc. Even when Lord Krishna appeared on earth He underwent the same austerities while living at the house of His guru, Sandipani Muni, along with His elder brother Balaram in a place now known as Ujjain. The ashram is still there and millions of pilgrims go to visit this sacred place.

This system of education is the oldest on earth for it has existed since the dawn of Vedic civilization. According to modern chronology its roots can be traced back 10,000 years to the time of the ancient civilization. The curriculum ensures the development of the physical, mental and spiritual conditions of the student.

At the Gurukula, the student learns about self-development in all possible areas that he will go through different stages of life, such as householder life, professional life, etc. What is astonishing is that students also learn about ecology and world preservation for they become fully aware of self-sufficiency, farming and cow protection.

ISKCON Gurukul: Srila Prabhupada had a vision which is being accomplished by his disciples nowadays. This vision was to provide education not only to members of our society but to whoever interested in getting their children trained in the best possible environment for devotional service to the Lord. In our Krishna consciousness movement, the Gurukula plays an extremely important part in our activities, because right from childhood, the boys and girls are instructed about Krishna consciousness.

Thus they become steady in their pursuits in life and they are not prone to become materialists. Students learn to become Krishna conscious and live up to Brahminical standards. They become well conversant in the revealed scriptures such as the Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam. While growing up, the students develop different qualities and as such they get to know to which social class they belong: brahmans, ksatriyas, vaisyas or sudras. The girls don'’t go to gurukul. They stay at home and learn cooking, sewing, etc. They also learn dances such as kathak and Bharat Natyam. Girls are meant to be protected at every stage of their life and they are not the ones who run a family or who take the leading roles in society. That is one of the reasons why it is not necessary to send them to gurukul.

But nowadays in the ISKCON society there is gurukul for girls where training is given to them. This is because we have devotees all round the world and most of us don'’t come from a family of vedic background. So the gurukul is there to give training to such children coming from these families.

Why let Tim and Lisa learn at home than send them to school? Well, first of all, you don''t have to wake them up at 7 every morning and bundle them off to school with umpteen numbers of instructions, and wait with an anxious heart till they return.

Why let Tim and Lisa learn at home than send them to school? Well, first of all, you don'’t have to wake them up at 7 every morning and bundle them off to school with umpteen numbers of instructions, and wait with an anxious heart till they return.

Homeschooling gives you more control over the influences that affect your child. The growth and development of your child is removed from the realm of the unknown. You and you alone can decide what your child needs to do or learn. Tailoring the curriculum to suit the needs and interests of the child is one of the most obvious benefits of homeschooling

Individual attention is another salient benefit of homeschooling. For instance, if Lisa needs more time to learn Math, then she can reduce the time for her English lessons. There are no fixed hours of learning per subject. This means that a child has the advantage of assigning more number of hours to the subject that seems tough WITHOUT any additional pressure. The amount of time needed to learn each subject will depend on the abilities and interests of the child.

The schooling of the child becomes an extended family activity. Parents get involved in every step of the learning procedure. Field trips and experiments become family activities. Thus, the child receives more quality time with his parents. The entire family shares games, chores and projects. Family closeness becomes the focus here. The child is also free of any negative peer pressure while making choices and decisions.

Competition is limited when it comes to homeschooling. The child does not need to prove his ability with regards to other children. His confidence remains intact. Since parents have a deep understanding of their child, they can plan the learning program to pique the child’’s interest.

It is also possible to intersperse difficult tasks with fun activities. A tough hour with Algebra can be followed by a trip to the nearest museum. Learning becomes fun. Parents can also tailor the curriculum to suit the learning style of the child. Some children learn through reading, while others need to write, and still others need to see objects in action.

Homeschooling allows parents to take control over the moral and religious learning of the child. Parents have the flexibility to incorporate their beliefs and ideologies into the child’’s curriculum. There is no confusion in the child’’s mind either because there is no variation between what is being taught and what is being practiced.

Lastly, more and more parents are getting disillusioned with the public school system. They believe that their children are being pushed too hard or too little. Other worrying issues pertaining to discipline and ethics also make the school system less welcome. Many repudiate the educational philosophy of grouping children solely on the basis of their age. Some parents themselves have unhappy memories of their own public school experience that motivates them to opt for homeschooling when it comes to their own children.

Homeschooling is the best way to teach a child if you have the time, the ability and the interest to follow through with his education. After all, nobody can understand or appreciate your child more than yourself.

Textbook buy back can be brutal. Read here for one great way you can get more money. Learn how it works for new and used textbooks.

By Kevin Ihrig

You know what textbook buy back is - wait in line, offer the university demigod your used textbook and hope they give you something for it. But have you ever heard of guaranteed textbook buy back? With a guarantee, you avoid keeping a book you don'’t need, and you don'’t have to stand in line wondering if your bookstore will have filled their quota for your book. Especially if the person in front of you has the same one.

Standard Textbook Buy Back Jitters
Don'’t you hate that feeling, as you stand in line to sell your books? The waiting. The watching to see if they buy your book from every person in the line. Will they still need my book? When you arrive at the register, and they only need 2 of the 7 books you have.

The Guarantee
You can avoid this now by buying through stores that guarantee your textbook buy back. Some campus stores and some online stores will guarantee to buy back certain books, and they will even tell you how much they will pay you. You still have some limitations, as you might expect. Instead of waiting in the line to find out that you can'’t sell it back, you find out when you buy it that you can'’t.

You also don'’t have to wonder how much you'’ll get at buy back. The company will tell you right away how much value you will lose - but you will still have the guaranteed textbook buy back price, and you will reduce the cost of your textbooks with a guarantee.

End of Semester Time Saver
At the end of the semester, you will just take your books to a drop off point and pick up your cash - but you may have a line still. The difference is that you will also have a guaranteed return. With online stores, you will usually get a prepaid postage sticker you have to keep until the end of the term, and then you'’ll mail them back for a check.

The companies that provide this service will tell you how much they will pay. Many university bookstores also offer this service. The books included in the program will typically have a sticker or an icon, if online, to show you that they have a guaranteed textbook buy back amount.

Be careful to protect that sticker! It serves as your guarantee. Campus bookstores usually require that their sticker still be on the book. Just be aware.

Not Every Textbook is Included
Whether through a campus store or online, not all textbooks will have the guarantee. Even if some of yours don'’t, you can still do it the old way during buy back week. And of course you can also sell it online.

Does This Work for Used Textbooks?
Used textbooks can also be in guarantee programs as well. It just depends on the department and the professors at your school. If they have committed to using the book for a few years, then the store will offer a guarantee on that book. Online stores use a different method, but the result is the same, if they see significant commitment to the book, they can offer a guarantee for a used book, too.

The Numbers
The breakdown I give here won'’t be perfect in all cases, but you will get an idea of how these programs work. When a college or an online bookstore offers a guaranteed textbook buy back on a new book, they will often promise you 50 percent of the book price you paid at the beginning of the class. Then, they will add half of that when they resell it used, a total of about 75 percent of your price.

Used textbooks will work similarly but with slightly different numbers. Your book will drop half its value, but you do get half the amount back. If you have access to a guaranteed textbook buy back, you get a pretty good deal. You know which textbooks you can sell for something, you probably know how much, and you save time. Cool. Cheap textbooks and less work.

Differences between Online and On Campus
Textbook buy back will be slightly different online versus on campus. You will have to ship for an online bookstore, but not on campus. And you will have to wait for the online bookstore to acknowledge your books. On the other hand, an online store may have a wider variety of books with a guarantee. And you may be able to return the books earlier than at the bookstore.

Your on campus bookstore will be close by, no waiting for a check. They will give you cash, and hopefully the line will be short.

Both will look at your books before they pay. Severe damage invalidates the guarantee. Don'’t drop it in a rainstorm, or highlight in black. Some wear is normal, some writing, some highlighting. And you have to have all the pieces: all the pages, and any disks or student workbooks if included when you bought the book.

Expectations
You can'’t really expect to get all your textbooks for nothing. I managed to do it in several classes, and even made money on one book. But over a full term of classes or a year, you have to expect to spend something. In those cases, the guaranteed textbook buy back fills the bill, and helps reduce your expenses.

Maybe you'’ll even have money for a First Run movie ticket - with popcorn!

By Kevin Ihrig

A college textbook purchase can set you back hundreds of dollars. I have 3 great places to look for textbooks to avoid buying textbooks altogether. You may not know it, but you can often get textbooks for free. Learn these techniques for saving money in college, and use them over and over again.

How I Took Classes - But I Didn'’t Buy Textbooks
I recently finished an MBA, and those textbooks are not cheap! In one class, I had 3 textbooks, but I was able avoid buying 2 of them. I had to make some calls or send some emails, and in this specific case, I had to talk to the professor as well. But in the end, I avoided some expensive books. I'’ll show you 3 ways below.

Strategy #1: Loaned Textbooks
I know, it sounds crass, but we are talking about real money. Besides, it isn'’t that hard to do. I just called some friends that had been in other classes with me, and I asked if they still had their textbooks. One did, and he let me borrow them for the semester.

Tip: Make lots of friends like this. This guy was a semester or two ahead of me, and took similar classes. We did have one class together where I took it before him in the program. Also, he loved to keep his books for reference for later. I didn'’t keep mine, and he didn'’t mind loaning his. Also, I was always careful with his books, and I didn'’t write in them. I just had to drive to his house to get them, and I avoided several college textbook purchases by maintaining the friendship.

One of the books was an article anthology, just a bunch of articles in one place. A new version had come out, so I had to ask the professor what articles we would be using, and compare that to my borrowed book. He said there were only a few new ones, and I found those online doing a search, or through a library database, like EBSCO Host. I had access as part of being a student, so it was free.

I took care of my friend’’s books and returned them at the end of the term. And he lent me some more after that.

Nearly Free: Technically, I may have had to use some paper and toner to print a 10 or 20 page article. Not bad ;o)

Strategy #2: Ask the Professor
I had a book coming to me, and it hadn'’t arrived yet, but you can use this to avoid your college textbook purchase altogether in some cases. Since mine was delayed, I asked the professor if I could borrow an old one of his for a couple of weeks. He said no problem.

I used his book till mine came, but I could have asked for a longer period. Professors often have books for years, and they often get extra books from publishers. A good relationship can help here as well.

Strategy #3: The Study Lab
When I took an economics class as an undergrad, we had a lab to go to study for the class. A teaching assistant was there to answer any questions, with his own book. The lab had some great hours, but was often unoccupied.

Simply go to the lab and use the book and ask questions, just like you should as an interested student. Let the lab assistant help you, and use their book while in the lab.

Bonus: You finish your assignment, and you avoid a college textbook purchase. Be sure your class actually has a study lab, a TA, and a book before you try this one. Borrowing is even cheaper than a used textbook sale.
