Learn how to play Razz, one of the new popular poker games.

By Thomas Jones

If you like playing poker and are a constant at Texas hold ‘’em tables, you may consider learning a new game to widen your playing abilities. Additionally, the more games you learn, the quicker you can participate in HORSE tournaments which are common fun alternatives to standard Hold ‘’em tournaments given they are a change of pace and a much more aggressive quick tournament than Hold ‘’em. One game that composes HORSE but will probably be fairly new to you as it is not so common in the casinos and in neighborhood poker tournaments is Razz. Razz is played with the same traditional 2-8 players, but the objective is to have the lowest set of cards at the end to win the pot. After this point, RAZZ quickly differentiates from standard poker so pay close attention to the instructions if you want to learn.

First off in Razz, there are no straights or flushes, and remember that you do not want the high hand, so any pairs, even if they are high pairs, are going to count against you in the end. Therefore, you will have to kick that initial rise in anticipation after being dealt a pocket pair, because for once, you don'’t want them. In Razz, the lowest card is an Ace as it counts as a one, so having one in your hole is a good thing, and if you have to have a pair, a pair of aces is the way to go, so you can still anticipate being dealt a pocket ACE.

As the game begins, each player is dealt their hole, two cards face down. At this point each player will also be dealt on card face up on the table. From this point, the betting commences with the player with the highest face up card has to begin the betting. This is similar to playing with blinds because they are forced to begin bidding, but unlike traditional poker games, if the cards randomly deal in a certain manner, the same person may be forced to start the bidding every round. This is done so that the highest card holder in the first round is never allowed to fold out from the beginning, thus making the game more interesting as strategy has to be employed in a lot greater detail to win a hand.

Now you are considered to have three cards, and after the betting has closed, the fourth card will be dealt face up and betting will commence in the same format. All regular rules of poker, betting, folding, and checking are in place. Next comes the fifth and the sixth deals, but the difference is, not the player who is dealt the lowest card begins the bidding. Finally the seventh card is dealt and after a round of betting players lay down their two hole cards to see who wins the pot with the lowest pot. While it may be confusing at first, after a few rounds you should be able to catch on and have a great deal of fun.

The True Story Behind Reality TV

Examining if reality tv truly reflects everyday life.

By Mariam Ma

Reality tv has been the staple television programming for numerous networks for quite a few years now. Just set up some hidden cameras or a discreet film crew and film. The blend of real life drama and cheap production cost make it a win-win situation for viewers and producers alike.

However, given the instant fame that it brings the reality tv contestants, can we even assume that these are everyday, regular people? And, to heighten the drama, can we trust that the producers won'’t manipulate story line?

It can be argued that Mark Burnett created the reality tv phenomena with the grand daddy of them all, Survivor. The concept was simple enough: in a micro environment, who was best fitted to survive the group dynamics and the environment. Logically speaking, you'’d think the best outdoor survivalists would win. However, in cases more often than not, it’’s the person who best plays the players that win. So is this representative of a real life emergency situation that you'’d shun the nicest people and those who are actually capable of fending for themselves in the outdoors?

Stripping down of the external hardships, Big Brother is another non-scripted show that makes you wonder if people really behave this way. Stuck inside a house and bored out of their minds, we spy from the hidden cameras that the contestants have nothing better to do than to plot the demise of one of their own. For this game, the ability to wheel and deal, forge alliances and backstab is the route to victory.

If you have ever noticed, reality tv contestants are also generally pretty good looking. This probably is not a true reflection of the office slobs that the general public has to deal with. However, one thing is for certain, genetically gifted people are given the leg up for at least being casted in the show. The work is probably a godsend for struggling actors and models trying to get a break. And no doubt that they are probably all about getting screen time by creating drama for the benefit of the producers watching behind their hidden spy cameras.

So, is reality tv real, and is it just a microcosm of everyday life? Yes and no. It is a fact that good looking people will get ahead in the world. However, people do tend to want to live in harmonious situations. But all this changes when your livelihood and self preservation is at stake. Once threatened, all civility goes out the window. The situation is the same when there’’s a promotion or something else that will help you advance your status in life. Therefore, don'’t be surprised by backstabbing coworkers in the corporate world. While the audience can watch the contestants every move with hidden cameras, we don'’t have this luxury in the workplace. Maybe reality tv can teach us something after all.

This article discusses the math behind maximizing your chances to win the Michigan Lottery.

By Allen Wright

Let me start off by telling you that there is no guaranteed system of winning the lottery, so don'’t fool yourself into thinking there is. There are ways, however, to increase your odds of picking winning numbers. If we look at the math behind the lottery, we can find a few ways to help ourselves out.

The Mega Millions game that’’s played in the Michigan lottery is called a 5/56 and 1/46 game. That adds up to a 1 in 176 million chance of picking all the winning numbers, or to put it another way, you'’re more likely to get struck by lightening twice in one day. However, if we look at the math behind the probability and statistics, we can find a few ways to significantly increase our odds.

A Simple Lottery System
We can better find ways to increase our odds if we simplify things a little bit. To start out, let’’s look at eliminating one number. That means buying 11 tickets that each contain one of the numbers from 1 to 56. That means you are guaranteed to have a ticket with one winning number. Get it? For a cost of only $11 you can increase the probability that you'’ll have a jackpot ticket to 1 in 16,895,340, or a ten times increase in your odds. And for only $11! That’’s a very large payoff for a small investment. Of course, you'’re still in the realm of incredibly unlikely to win, but you'’re out of the realm of two lightning strikes in one day.

If we look at the historical record of numbers drawn for the Mega Millions jackpot, we can see some trends emerging. The most probable combination of numbers is three odd and three even. That means that 1/3 of the time there are three even and three odd numbered balls on the tray after the drawing. Further, a lottery drawing with no consecutive numbers occurs only once ever two weeks, and the most common sequence is three high and three lower numbers. So if we want to take advantage of these observations, we need to pick three even and three odd numbers that are an even mix of high and low with no consecutive numbers.

The last thing to keep in mind is to know what was drawn for the previous two weeks. The most likely drawing will have no numbers from the previous week, and no two numbers from the week before that. Keep all these tips in mind and you can maximize your odds of winning.

By Peter Johnson

If you are considering becoming an xbox game tester it could be one of the most profitable decisions you make. The Xbox brand, specifically with the release of the xbox360 has become a dominant force in the gaming industry. With this there has been an ever increasing need for xbox game testers. Here are 3 reasons why xbox game testers tend to make the most money.

1 Xbox Is Backed By Microsoft

This may not come as a surprise to many, but the brand is a creation of the computer powerhouse Microsoft. Yes, that’’s right, Bill Gates created the Xbox! For this reason the Xbox brand is extremely well funded, and as such the money on offer for game testers is quite substantial indeed. Some xbox beta game testers report wages as high as $100 per hour. Obviously this is dependent on the game in question, and the deadline required.

2 Xbox Games Are Complex

The main role of a game tester is to discover bugs and issues in unreleased video games, and report them back to the gaming companies. Xbox 360 have amongst the most complex graphics and production qualities of any games produced currently. For this reason, there is even more importance for gaming companies to ensure their games are free of bugs and issues prior to release. For this reason there are slightly higher standards required for testing the games, which in turn translates into more game testing jobs for xbox games. At the same time expectations are high and being thorough is crucial and highly regarded.

3 Xbox Games Are Easier To Mass Produce

The release of the Xbox360 was timed specifically so multi-platform developers would favour the gaming console. The result was that a high amount of games were created for Xbox in a short space of time. Xbox has also been created with far more advanced development tools, making it actually easier for gaming companies to produce games in their format. The greater amount of games being produced results in a higher amount of game testing jobs being needed to be filled.

Conclusion

So what does this all mean to you at the end of the day? If you are considering becoming an xbox game tester then there are certainly a lot of opportunities out there for you. Of all gaming platforms xbox game testers will be in the highest demand, and more likely to command the highest pay available.

Audio books are a wonderful way to enjoy all kinds of material while on the go.

By MIKE SELVON

It used to be that they were called “books on tape” and people would get a cassette deck installed in their car just to listen to them on their commutes. Today, they are better known as audio book volumes, but they still deliver a great deal of information and entertainment as well. Audio books are enjoyed by people of all walks of life, young and old, and they can turn a potentially dry and boring time in a vehicle into an opportunity to learn and grow.

One of the best benefits of a book in audio format is that is can be listened to at anyplace and anytime. It is a favorite companion for people while they are traveling, commuting, exercising, shopping, working in the garden, or even dusting and vacuuming the house. Using headphones with your favorite audio book player allows you to listen and absorb the information no matter what might be going on around you.

Even when you are in a situation that is quiet and are able to enjoy a good audio book, there are still advantages to using your headphones. You can often improve your retention and comprehension of the material when you use headphones because they help reduce distractions from other noises and help the listener focus better. Also, some people learn better by hearing and some people learn best when they can read and hear at the same time.

There are a number of different books in audio format these days that people can choose from. There are audio books on CD, on audio cassette and also as MP3s and any standard CD player, cassette recorder, or MP3 player that you might use to listen to music can function as an audiobook player as well.

If you buy a CD audiobook to play in the CD player in your car, then you can also make that same book into an MP3 that can be used on your digital music player, such as an iPod, if you have one. This makes it even more convenient to listen wherever you are and whatever you might be doing.

But, if your car is also equipped with an MP3 player, or with a connection that you can use to make use of your MP3 player in your vehicle, then the best way to buy an audio tome is online. This is because you can download audio books online and this is not only much faster than ordering a cassette or CD audiobook, but it is less expensive as well.

If the publishers of audio books don'’t have to burn the recording onto a CD or copy it onto a cassette, then they save time and money, and they can pass on these savings when you buy an MP3 audiobook. On top of that, you won'’t have to pay for shipping and handling and you can download your new audio book within minutes.

There is a great selection of books available every month, no matter which audio book format suits you best. If you can find printed materials that cover a certain topic, then you will no doubt be able to find audio versions of at least some of those books. It should be noted, though, that the audio cassette books are becoming harder to find.

This great hotel located oceanfront in Myrtle Beach S.C. excellent rates and good service. Located right on the ocean for spectacular views.

By Nick Marion

It is getting that time of year again when lots of people are looking for a good deal in vacationing along the beaches. There are tons of choices that you can make and time is drawing nearer to book rooms before they all are filled. If you are like most people who want to take a beach trip but don'’t want to spend an arm and a leg I know how you feel, I also wanted to save some money while still staying in nice up kept establishment. Furthermore, I wanted to be close to some entertainment especially since gas prices are soaring ever higher.

If you have considered visiting Myrtle Beach SC for the first time, or have visited there before and are looking for a good deal, then you should really look into the Westgate Hotel. It is located right on the ocean within walking distance of many of Myrtle Beaches great attractions. Many of which are less than a mile away from the hotel.

Westgate Hotel is also close to both of Myrtle’’s long piers which offer fishing, and even a pier restaurant. If you book for the Fourth of July you will have a front row seat to one of the East coasts largest fireworks shows for free. That alone is worth the trip down there because I have seen the show three times and it never gets old! During the summer they have a smaller fireworks show every wednesday night and every week so you really dont have to go for the 4th of july to see a fire works show.

Not only is the hotel close to alot of the main attractions it is also fairly priced, with and average cost of just above a hundred dollars a night, even for the holiday weekend. The Westgate hotel is also located adjacent to the Family Kingdom waterpark which allows the kids to visit the large water slides and pools in just a minutes notice. I have stayed at Myrtle Beach before and having a great hotel at a good price makes the trip loads of more fun for all members of the family!

The hotel is undergoing some renovations and is building on a large addition just adjacent to the hotel that is already there it should be finished by the summer of 2009. It will be a great facility to visit once the complete renovation is complete and will be the most sought after hotel on the Grand Strand.

If you are interested in learning more about this wonderful chance at a great vacation visit the the link provided.

Pokemon makes another splash with the tadpole Poliwag.

By Rachel Yoshida

With characters that range from cute to hideous, docile to aggressive, kind to vicious, and meek to brave, it is easy to see why people worldwide have gotten Pokemon fever. Pokemon is the second most successful video game-based franchise, trailing behind the Mario series, and can be found in video games, on television, on card games, clothing, and memorabilia. As of Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl, there are now 493 Pokemon, and it looks like the creators aren'’t stopping! This will discuss three of the original water Pokemon. Although they are three of the original 150 Pokemon, they are still a favorite among Pokemon fans.

At Number 060 in the National Pokedex is Poliwag, a blue-skinned, round tadpole that can be found in freshwater ponds and lakes that are abundant in lily pads. They can also be found by fishing or swimming in certain areas of water. It stands at just 2′’ tall and weighs a small 27 pounds. Its intestines can be seen through its semitransparent skin and appears as a large swirl on its abdomen. It waddles as it walks because its legs prevent it from running fast. Naturally, Poliwag prefers to swim than to stand or walk on dry land.

When Poliwag evolves at Level 25, it transforms into Poliwhirl, the Number 061 Pokemon in the National Pokedex. Although it is evolved, it weighs 24 pounds, less than its predecessor, and stands at 3′’3″. Its legs are more developed, allowing this Pokemon to live in or out of water. When it lives on land, it must maintain a slimy body by sweating continuously. Turning in the opposite direction of Poliwag, the swirl still shows through its skin and can be used in battle to cause drowsiness and induce sleep. It also has arms and what look like boxing gloves.

Poliwrath is the last stage of evolution for Poliwag and can only be evolved with the use of the water stone. Coming in at Number 062 in the National Pokedex, it is both a water and a fighting Pokemon and stands at 4′’3″ and weighs 119 pounds, almost five times more than Poliwag. Poliwrath resembles Poliwhirl, except it has thicker arms, giving the impression that it is a fighter. It can easily overtake the best swimmers, both human and Pokemon, and excels at both the front crawl and the breaststroke. Its arms never get tired, no matter how long or how often it uses them and is believed to be capable of swimming the entire diameter of the Pacific Ocean.

There were few reviews of this masterpiece. The story line change from acclaimed actor and director, Clint Eastwood.

By Rachel Yoshida

One of the big screen’’s most legendary actors is Clinton “Clint” Eastwood. Born in San Francisco, California on May 31, 1930, he is best known for starring in films that portray him as a tough guy. As a result, he has been viewed as an icon of masculinity. He has starred in popular movies, such as Honkytonk Man, Unforgiven, The Bridges of Madison County, Escape from Alcatraz, and Million Dollar Baby. Another one of those films is In the Line of Fire.

In the Line of Fire was directed by world-renowned director, Wolfgang Petersen, and written by Jeff Maguire. It was released in the United States on July 9, 1993. Clint Eastwood plays Frank Horrigan, a Secret Service agent whose duty is to protect the life of the president at all costs. Traumatized by the event that occurred on November 22, 1963, Horrigan can'’t help but reminisce when he was picked by President John F. Kennedy to protect him, only to have been assassinated under Horrigan’’s care. Meanwhile, a psychopath by the name of Mitch Leary played by John Malkovich, who refers to himself as Booth, has his eyes set on the current President’’s re-election. Horrigan works on a report about a man who is threatening the President’’s life, visits him at his home, and finds a collection of photos from previous assassinations. After conducting a background check and finding out that Booth’’s identity is false, he heads back to the apartment to make an arrest but finds that all photos were removed, except for one: a photo of Horrigan at the place President Kennedy had been shot.

He maintains contact with Horrigan and continues to tell him about his horrible plans to assassinate the President all while taunting Horrigan of his failures, specifically his inability to prevent President Kennedy from being assassinated. On one occasion, Horrigan and his partner Al D'’Andrea, played by Dylan McDermott, run into Booth after the Secret Service traces his call. After a chase throughout buildings and rooftops, D'’Andrea is killed, leaving Horrigan to question his ability to apprehend Booth before he harms the President. At one point, Horrigan is ordered to step down by the Secret Service director because of the visible tension and stress Horrigan is facing. Will Horrigan be able to prevent Booth from killing the President?

In the Line of Fire received three Academy Award nominations: Jeff Maguire for Best Original Screenplay, John Malkovich for Best Supporting Actor, and Anne V. Coates for Best Editing. If you'’re home one rainy evening and want to rent a good movie, watch In the Line of Fire. You will not regret it.

Bingo is one game that has been around for years and years. It is a relaxing, yet fun game played by children and adults alike.

By Jason Szova

Bingo is one game that has been around for years and years. It is a relaxing, yet fun game played by children and adults alike. Bingo can now be played online and offline, your choice, whichever you feel more comfortable and prefer. However, before you get started playing, it is a good idea to know the rules as they apply to the game and general play.

Bingo Game Rules

The great thing about Bingo is that it is easy to learn and only has a few rules. The first thing you need to know is about the Bingo Card itself. The card contains twenty five squares, 24 of these squares contain numbers anywhere from 1 to 75. The 25th square is empty and known as the free space. Across the top of the card you will see the word Bingo. Each letter corresponds with a column, each column contains its own range of numbers.

The B column will contain only numbers from one to fifteen. The I column will only contain numbers from sixteen to thirty. The N column will only contain numbers from thirty-one to forty-five. The G column numbers from forty-six to sixty, and the O column numbers from sixty-one to seventy-five.

The numbers are called by an announcer. The announcer draws a ball and names the letter and number. At the start of the game, you will be told a pattern that you must match in order to get a Bingo. The pattern could be a straight line or a design. It could be a diagonal, vertical, or horizontal line.

As the numbers are called, you place a marker on the number, if it is on your Bingo card. The first person to match the pattern calls Bingo and they win.

You see, it is really very easy to learn and get started. All you need is to get involved.

What To Watch Out For

Bingo isn'’t a tough game, but you want to make sure that you have a good idea of the pattern that you are shooting for. It is easy to get lost in the pattern as you are marking your cards. You also want to make sure that you are paying attention. If you are paying attention elsewhere, you might get behind on numbers and someone could call Bingo while you are trying to catch up.

Conclusion

Bingo is easy, it’’s fun, and it’’s a great way to pass the time with your friends. Once you know the rules, you'’ll be playing and ready to shout BINGO in no time.

The article states the history and the special characteristics of Hollywood Film Industry. It also gives us a glimpse into its working.

By Victor Epand

Film industry is an amalgamation of technological and commercial institutions of filmmaking. It generally consists of film production companies, film studios, cinematography, film production, screenwriting, pre-production, post production, film festivals, actors, directors and film personnel.

Today the film industry is spread all around the world. In the present century the major business centers of filmmaking are concentrated in the United States, India and China. Hollywood is a district in Los Angeles, California, that is situated in west- northwest of Downtown Los Angeles. Due to its fame and the cultural individuality of movie studios and movie stars, the word Hollywood is often used as a metaphor for the cinema of the United States which is popularly known as Hollywood film industry.

The history of Hollywood film industry probably started in the hands of D.W. Griffith when the Biograph Company sent him and his crew. They started filming on a vacant lot in downtown Los Angeles in early 1910. Soon the company explored new territories to find that the region was quite friendly and very ideal for shooting. So, Griffith then filmed the first ever movie shot in Hollywood, titled In Old California. The movie company then stayed there for some months to shoot several of their films and then returned to New York.

Starting in 1913, this wonderful place came into the limelight when moviemakers started heading there. Thus Hollywood film industry took birth. The first feature film made in Hollywood was called The Squaw Man. Nestor Studio, founded in 1911, was the first movie studio in Hollywood. Fifteen other small studios also were established in Hollywood. Gradually Hollywood came to be so powerfully associated with the film industry that this term began to be used as a synonym for the entire industry.

During the First World War Hollywood became the movie capital of the world. By the year 1950, music recording studios and offices began moving to Hollywood, though much of the movie industry had already been moved there.

The world famous Hollywood Walk of Fame was constructed in the year 1958 and the first star was placed in 1960. The Walk of Fame was placed as a tribute to the artists working in the entertainment industry. It is embedded with more than 2,000 five pointed stars featuring the names of not only celebrities, but also fictional characters. Self financing Hollywood Historic Trust maintains this Walk of Fame. The first star to receive this honor was Joanne Woodward. An artist receives a star based on career and lifetime achievements in motion pictures, live theatres, radio, television, and music.

The famous Hollywood sign which originally read Hollywoodland, was constructed in the year 1923 as an advertisement of a new housing development. The sign was left to disuse until in 1949 the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce repaired and removed the last four letters. The sign, now located at Mount Lee, is now a registered trademark and hence cannot be used without the permission of the Chamber of Commerce.

The Hollywood film industry can be called the Mecca of film industries. Though geographically it is located in Hollywood, it resides in the hearts of millions of film lovers and film related persons. The Hollywood remains and will remain a king, without a scepter.

Playing board games are alot of fun if you have great board game rules, this article explains why concise rules are an absolute must, for brand new gamers.

By Victor Epand

Nothing can be more frustrating than sitting down to play an exciting new board game, only to find that the rule book is a confusing jumble of words that barely seems to make sense. This can be a real dampener to all of the anticipation that both you and your friends have built up about getting this game and sitting down to decipher the rules can often take a lot longer and produce many more headaches than the game itself might. There is nothing more important than having a set of rules that are clearly understandable and allow you to easily sit down and begin the game.

Ideally, if you and your friends get a new game with a confusing set of rules, it would be ideal if everyone could sit down independently and read the rules on their own. After this, everyone could sit down and discuss the rules, agreeing on which points are clear and figuring out the troubled area of game play. By thoroughly discussing all the finer points of playing the game, all of the players can have a clear understanding of not only what is going on, but of what the other players understand too. A game is only fair, and therefore evenly matched and fun, if everyone has the same understandings going into the game.

That approach isn'’t always possible, however. Sometimes only a limited amount of time is available in which people can play a game together and a thorough, yet understandable explanation of the rules is important for everyone to be on the same page. When this is going to be the case, the best scenario is for you to thoroughly read the rules well before the game time arrives. This gives you time to digest the rules and figure out the best way to explain them to the other players. There are a few methods you can use to explain everything to the group as well, helping you teach them the mechanics of the game in as sort a time as possible.

It’’s often easiest if you set the board up for everyone before the other players arrive. This way, you can use the board to show them examples of the finer points of the rules and let them visualize what might happen. Then, once everyone is seated and paying attention, it can often help to summarize the game using only a few sentences. This gives everyone a clear view of the goals of the game and what it is that they need to be working towards. Once they understand what the winning conditions are, it is often helpful to give a general summary of the basic mechanics of the game, what usually happens turn by turn, before going into the finer points of the rules. Explaining too many of the little details before covering the basics can only confuse players and make a muddled gaming experience.

Once the smaller details are covered, and the other players generally have a working idea of the specifics of the game, it helps to cover any exceptions that might take place inside the game which are outside of the rules. Finally, and this can be especially helpful if you have played this game before, it is generally helpful to offer a few strategies to the other players, to help them start to get a leg up on the game and allow everyone to have fun!

Much of the popularity of any film industry is due to its stars. The star system is deliberately maintained by the field to sell their films. The name of the stars will give a big boost to the sale.

By Victor Epand

The method of creating and promoting film stars in Hollywood movies is known as the star system. Different studios would select talented actors and create roles for them, often inventing new names and even new backgrounds. Stars that went through this star system in Hollywood movies are Cary Grant, Joan Crawford and Rock Hudson. Star system of Hollywood movies puts an emphasis on the image rather than on real acting talents. However, acting, voice, and dancing form a part of the criteria.

There are rules and restrictions that these new budding actors have to follow. For instance, they are not allowed to leave the house without putting any makeup and wearing stylish clothes when it comes to female actors. On the other hand, the male actors are expected to be seen in public as gentlemen. The star system of Hollywood movies had a morality clause as well.

Just as the executives, public relations staffs, and the agents worked together with the actor to create a star character, so also they would work together to cover up the incidents or lifestyles which would prove disrespectful and that can damage or spoil the image of the actor in the eye of the public.

In the star system of Hollywood movies, performers are not identified in films due to two main reasons. One is that the stage performers were embarrassed to be seen in films. Initially, they were featured in silent films and it was considered pantomime, which is the art of conveying emotions, actions, and feelings, by gestures without speech. As one of the main skills of actors was their voice, they were afraid that appearing in films would ruin their reputation.

The other reason for the performers not being identified in films was because producers feared that actors would gain more prestige and power and the stars might demand more money. There were many incidents that have caused the star system of Hollywood movies to come into existence. Some of the main reasons can be traced out from the following incidents.

Thomas Edison and the Motion Picture Patents Company (in short the MPPC) forced the filmmakers to use their equipment and follow their rules, since they owned most of the patents of the motion picture equipment. And it is said that the MPPC did promote some actors during that time.

There was a change in the star system of Hollywood movies, and the main reason was that the public desired to know the real names of the actors. Film audiences constantly recognized a number of performers in movies that they liked. As the names of these stars was not disclosed, the audience would give them nicknames such as the Biograph Girl, Florence Lawrence, and the like.

The MPPC was gaining control over the movie industry until Carl Laemmle promoted the first film star. He was independent of the MPPC and used star promotion to fight the MPPC gaining control over the film industry. He got hold of Lawrence from Biograph and spread a rumor that she was killed in a car accident but then later combated this rumor and said she was doing fine and would be starring in the up-coming film produced by him.

Another reason that led to the establishment of the star system in Hollywood movies was the development of the film magazines that gave fans knowledge about the actors. This included the lifestyles of the actors outside their film roles. Some of the popular magazines of the time were the Motion Picture Story Magazine and Photoplay. They focused on stories of movies but later they began to focus more on the actors as it was advantageous economically. These are some of the main reasons for the introduction of the star system in Hollywood movies.

This article explains what an En Passant is and how you do it, this article explains the motive for using such a move and the rules for this particular move.

By Victor Epand

There are a number of different Chess moves which exist that have all been popularized with special names to clarify exactly what they stand for. Sometimes these moves are named after the person who frequented them, being called a special form of offense or defense. Occasionally, these moves are named after an abstract theory about the game itself. An En Passant, however, is named for exactly what it stands for. Taken from the French for, “in passing,” the term describes exactly what is happening on the board with the move.

Chess used to play by somewhat different rules, with castling never formerly being allowed, Queens and Bishops were limited in how far they could move in any one direction, and Pawns were never allowed to move more than one space at a time. In the 14th and 15th Centuries, however, the rules of Chess began to slowly change and all of the above mentioned examples now became permissible. This did pose a problem, though, with some of the Pawns. When Pawns were allowed to move up to two spaces on their first move, they could sometimes land in a position which would place them directly next to a Pawn of an opposite color. Being directly next to that Pawn of the opposite color, the original Pawn became unable to be captured. This would often result in an excess of Pawns on the board and became problematic to many of the strategies of the game.

To avoid the complications that this issue started to arise, another rule was added to the specifics of Chess. Rather than remove the rule which allowed Pawns to be removed two spaces, a special rule was customized to make up for the problem that Pawns which landed next to each other could pose. If a Pawn takes its initial move of two spaces and lands directly next to another Pawn of the opposite color, thus preventing the Pawn from being captured by normal rules, En Passant can come into play. The player of the opposite Pawn is allowed to move their Pawn one space diagonally, so that it is now directly behind the original Pawn. The original Pawn is then captured, as if it had never been allowed to move the original two spaces and only could move one instead. This places the Pawn of the opposite color into the space that the original Pawn would have occupied and the original Pawn is considered a captured piece.

En Passant is helpful in the fact that it helps to clear the chessboard a bit before heavy strategic decisions begin to come into play. Having too many pawns on the board can clutter a space and begin to hinder some of the more brilliant Chess strategies that players could enact. Space is sometimes needed on a board to play out a battle and the removal of pawns can be a very important part of a player’’s strategy. The beauty of the En Passant move is that it allows a player on the offense to not be thwarted by special Pawn movements, allowing them to strike while they have an opportunity.

If you match all three numbers the payout is $250. Sure, it’’s not going to buy you a new home or a fancy boat, but you'’re certainly not going to turn it down. Now, if you look at the problem from the standpoint of increasing your odds, that means you have to reduce the pool of winning numbers so you have a better chance of picking them. So let’’s buy spend $5.00 and buy 10 tickets at $0.50 each, putting each number from 0-9 in the same spot once on each ticket.

Looking at the problem now, we know that we will have at least one ticket with one number correct, and now we only have to match two numbers to win. That puts our odds of winning $250 down to 1 in 100, a 720% increase in the chance that we'’re going to win the big jackpot. All by spending an additional $4.50. That’’s a pretty big marginal gain for the small amount of money you'’ve spent.

Another game you can play in the Michigan Lottery is the box 3-way. That means to win the jackpot you need to match all three winning numbers, but in this game order no longer plays a factor. If you buy a ticket with 1, 3, and 2, you'’ll win with 1-2-3, 2-1-3, 3-1-2, 3-2-1, 1-3-2, and 2-3-1. Just removing order from the math gives you an immediate boost to your odds of winning the Michigan lottery, which are 1 in 120. The ticket is still $0.50, but the payout is also quite a bit less at $83. If you use the same method outlined above and eliminate one number, your odds rise to an amazing 1 in 45.

Eliminate Matched Numbers
One last thing to keep in mind when picking numbers is if you look at the Michigan lottery results, almost 68% of the Daily 3 winning numbers are not matched. This means that picking 0-0-0 or 1-1-1 will significantly decrease your odds of winning. Or, if we take it in another direction, picking unmatched numbers will increase your odds of winning. Package this little gem of information with your box betting and number elimination and you'’ll be well on your way to winning the Michigan Lottery.

An article on the history behind the modern day circus and the modern incarnation known as Cirque du Solieil.

By Shaun Parker

The circus has entertained people for centuries. Its origins lie in Roman times, where animals and theatre were used to entertain the populous. Following the demise of the Roman Empire however, there was a lack of circus type entertainment in Europe. The animal rich antics were taken up again by various travelling performers and gypsies throughout Europe, whilst the development of an acrobatic based circus was already well underway in China.

Traditionally, various circuses would focus on a main theme, such as trained animals, slapstick clowns or acrobats and daredevils. As the circus became a less popular form of entertainment, Circus troupes decided that they would have to merge to survive, bringing a new type of eclectic experience to draw in the audience. Drawing upon influences from entertainment around the world, a new breed of entertainment was formed, taking on stylized and choreographed theatrical tones.

In contemporary terms, the circus is a mix of acrobatic entertainment such as trapeze artists, animal entertainment using trained horses and bizarre entertainment, focussing on the skills of sword swallowers and fire eaters. This type of entertainment can be linked back to the curiosity of the side shows and freak shows that used to travel with a main circus troupe. Animals within the circus though are becoming increasingly rare. The modern day circus, once an arena for the exotic, is no longer about tamed lions and elephants that beg like a dog. The reasons for this are from allegations of animal cruelty in the keeping and training of such animals. The effect on public opinion was massive, and after a terrible tragedy involving a runaway elephant that had mauled it’’s keeper, the public no longer approved of animal inclusion in their circus entertainment.

Instead, entertainment that involved acrobatics and dangerous events became the taste of the day. Jousting on motorbikes with chainsaws had the power to deliver as much of an adrenalin rush and as ringmaster putting his head into a lions mouth. The power to shock has always been a winning formula, but so have theatrics and traditional skills that can be found throughout the history of the circus. A modern day entertainment troupe is likely to be presenting a performance with a story, as can be seen in the modern day marvel of the Cirque Du Soleil, which translates as Circus of the Sun.

The troupe found it’’s beginnings in Canada in the early 1980s with a show that was such a huge success, the founders decided to tour. The abolition of a traditional ring and the decision to not have animals in the performances gained this circus incarnation a reputation for being a truly modern incarnation. Drawing upon traditional circus skills and acts from across the world enable Cirque Du Soleil to translate complex stories through performance. The lack of curtains draws the audience in to the story, and creates a paradigm unbeatable in a traditional theatre or circus.

This type of event has a huge following from lovers of cabaret and the theatre; performing arts and traditional circus. The productions are suitable for family entertainment and are hugely popular in the corporate entertainment industry. With such spectacular and entertaining shows that tour the world and with a practising troupe numbering over three thousand, there is a wealth of talent and entertainment at their disposal. Aerial acrobatics combined with stunning set design, great lighting and fabulous costumes provide a setting that you'’ll remember for a lifetime. There is no doubt that this is one troupe that will bring back the essence of top quality entertainment.

This article is about the popularity of game designers who have designed some of the greatest games in the world of gaming.

By Victor Epand

Designer board games are one type of entertainment which is gaining a lot of notoriety in the gaming world. By taking the much beloved format of board games and approaching the project from a new angle, designers of these board games have almost entirely reinvented the enterprise in a new and exciting way. Specialty designer board games generally offer their players simple rules, themed play, and a good deal of thought and planning, which is required to do well in the game. Because of these components, which are not usually all to be found in traditional board games, these designer board games have become quite the trend in the gaming world.

Additionally, many of the people responsible for designing these board games have become quite popular for their creations. Many of them have had multiple games produced, each one a success. Any game which prominently features a designer’’s name on the box can usually be considered to be of the calibur of a specialty designer board game. Many different designers exist, however, and their games are usually vastly different.

One of these board game designers, Reiner Knizia, has experienced so much success in the world of designer board games, that over 200 of his games have been published by various manufacturers. Knizia, who hold a PhD in Mathematics, has been designing board games since the age of 6. Since 1997, Dr. Knizia has worked as a full-time board game designer, and his resume clearly shows the success that he has experienced. 7 of his games can be found on the Games 100 list, while 14 of his games are to be discovered on Board Game Geek’’s Top 100 games list. On top of this, several different of the top gaming conventions all host “Kniziathons,” which are tournaments in which solely Reiner Knizia games are played. Many of his games have won different prestige awards, such as Taj Mahal, which won both the 2000 Essen Feather Award and the Deutscher Spiele Preis Award in the same year. His game based on the popular Lord of the Rings books was granted a Spiel des Jahres 2001 special prize and can be considered the most popular of his board games, with publication in 17 different languages and over 1 million copies sold.

Andreas Seyfarth is another immensely popular designer of board games, with Puerto Rico being considered to be his crowning achievement. The game places players in the role of governors on the island of Puerto Rico during the era of the Caribbean ascendancy. Their goal is to earn the most victory points through various means, such as constructing new buildings or the shipment of goods from the ports. Seyfarth’’s games all have been ranked very highly by various board game enthusiast companies, with Puerto Rico often placed at the number one spot on many top board game lists. A number of his other games have all been granted very prestigious awards over the years that they were produced and any game with his name on it can be considered a high-quality game worth any player’’s time.

His smugness and his life-style should make you hate him but find out why you just can''t say no to 007.

By Mariam Ma

There is no doubt that James Bond is an iconic figure in fictional espionage. He is considered the ultimate spy and throughout the years, James Bond movies have entertained countless fans to become one of the longest running and most successful franchises in movie history. One has to ask though, what makes this character stand the test of time?

The collection of James Bond movies spans more than forty years encompassing twenty plus movies. The character has not only survived the fictional perils of global espionage but even the death of the creator himself. With new writers continuing the franchise and actor reboots, the essence of James Bond has surprisingly remained the same: a jet-setting, womanizing super spy with the latest technology at his disposal. Undoubtedly, this lends to audience appeal.

James Bond was the fictional creation of Ian Flemming, a British journalist with a navy background. He based the British Secret Service agent partly on himself: his life-stlye and his taste in women. It cannot be argued that this formula has been met with resounding success.

The parade of beautiful women has been a consistent theme with all James Bond movies. With the casting of each new movie, questions arise on who the new Bond girl is going to be. James Bond is thought of as a playboy who has had his heart broken from previous relationships thus making his womanizing more palatable for the audience.

Another running theme in the books and movies is the technology at Bond’’s disposal. Whether it’’s flashy cars or spy gadgets, the MI6 agent is well supplied by the research and development division of the British Secret Service. Bond has gotten out of many jams thanks to his arsenal of electronic toys much to the disbelief and delight of his fans.

With the entourage of women, the cars and the spy gadgets available, there’’s no denying that James Bond handles all these perks with flair. It takes a special character to be likable and not make the audience green with envy. But despite Bond’’s savoir-faire and sophistication, he’’s still a character with which male fans can relate and women fans still find endearing.

It is hard to believe that when Ian Flemming first created the character, he intentionally named his spy with one of the dullest sounding names possible. James Bond is anything but dull with his jet-setting lifestyle. If the movie studios remain true to the formula with Bond girls and spy gadgets, we'’ll be enjoying many more movies in the future with the line echoing, “the name is Bond, James Bond”.

From Jack Nicholson to Robert De Niro, Hollywood actors love to play a movie villain. Here we discuss all of the characteristics are necessary to make the ultimate movie villain.

By Patrick Omari

The English Dictionary describes a villain as a ‘’a character in a play, novel, or the like, who constitutes an important evil agency in the plot.'’ The villain will generally be placed in direct opposition to the protagonist, offering an almost complete mirror image to that of the hero. Where the hero of a movie will promote good behaviour and virtue, the villain will seek to disrupt harmony and possess evil characteristics that contradict those of the protagonist.

To create a great movie villain, there are many characteristics that must be incorporated. For the character to fundamentally work as a menacing villain, they must be enigmatic with a sense of mystery surrounding them. Although not all villainous characters will possess this quality, the very best baddies will be almost complete enigmas.

An indifferent and enigmatic villain can be threatening as a villain with an almost cartoon-like evil uniform like Jason Vorhees from Friday the 13th. In The Matrix (1999), the army of ‘’faceless'’ agents are cold and emotionless and suggest an unbeatable threat with which the hero cannot reason or negotiate.

The all-powerful emotionless villain is portrayed excellently in the X-Files TV series by William B. Davis as the Cigarette Smoking Man. Throughout the series he is constantly in control of the heroes and any attempts to kill him are deemed self-destructive or futile. His power over the protagonists'’ behaviour is linked to his role in the Syndicate, a mysterious organisation who seemingly are more powerful than the U.S. government.

Cigarette Smoking Man is not the traditional stereotypical villain, as he often hesitates in destroying the hero - Special Agent Fox Mulder. On many occasions, Mulder’’s life is under threat and Smoking Man regularly prevents the Syndicate from authorising Mulder’’s murder. His absolute power, suggested by his behaviour towards the show’’s protagonists, is questioned within his role in the Syndicate as he is often belittled and degraded. However, despite his authority being questioned in these scenes he is till regarded as an obvious force with his control over Mulder’’s destiny.

A sinister and disturbing persona can often be acquired by a villain when their behaviour is deemed unpredictable and erratic. This is often portrayed in movie villains that are criminally insane such as The Silence of the Lambs'’ Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Played by Sir Anthony Hopkin, Lecter is a psychiatrist, cannibal murderer with the ability to manipulate and control those around him.

Lecter’’s power comes from his intelligence and seeming lack of compassion. He uses extreme violence and rarely shows any sign of emotion, which only reinforces his role as a great movie villain. Other characters that have possessed a similar menacing quality are The Shining’’s Jack Torrance and Psycho’’s Norman Bates. Although, these two are considerably different in terms of motive, their threat is based primarily upon their lack of self-control.

A lack of self-control may not be the most dominant trait in the next villainous mention, but it is certainly a key aspect. In 1984, The Terminator burst onto movie screens all over the world as a relentless, unstoppable killing machine. This fearless, expressionless villain who will not feel pity or remorse was upgraded for the film’’s sequel in 1992 when the relatively basic Series 850 Model 101 was outdone by the superior T-1000 model.

T-1000 offers all of the same frightening characteristics of the original Terminator but with an additional ability of shape-shifting. T-1000 is more advanced and so provides a more threatening villain, made from liquid metal and able to mimic various objects including John Connor’’s foster-parents and his mother. This ability to shape-shift increases T-1000′’s villainous abilities massively as he is able to manipulate and deceive his victims against their will and judgment.

On the opposite end of the scale are the villains that are emotive, excitable and with exaggerated personas as demonstrated by Heath Ledger’’s villain in the most-recent Batman film, The Joker. The latest incarnation of the Clown Prince of Crime perfectly conveys his lack of empathy and almost-humorous contempt for human life. The most prominent aspect of The Joker is his colourful clothing and unusual physical appearance, with white face make-up, dyed green hair and smudged red lipstick.

The cartoon origins of the character lend themselves well to the movie villain, as his appearance is funny and appealing superficially. This technique is also used in other creations such as Stephen King’’s It and Chucky in Child’’s Play. These villains will play on children’’s trust as they emotionally shape-shift from a friendly face to a horrific villain.

Among the characteristics of the perfect villain, the key component is absolute evil without any redeeming features. This is rare in movie villains as often the antagonist is usually a tortured soul, abuse victim or in extremely weak films a misunderstood character. However, every so often a pure evil villain will arrive and send shivers down the spines of movie-goers everywhere.

The ultimate movie villain, Darth Vader from Star Wars, is as mysterious and dark as any film character in history. Although we do learn things about Darth Vader during the films, he is both physically and psychologically masked and cloaked - adding to the character’’s haunting menace. From his height (he was played by an actor nearly two metres tall), to his menacing voice which was dubbed over the original actor, Darth Vader is the most iconic movie villain in film history.

To make the ultimate movie villain there are a number of these characteristics that will help to make them memorable, dark, unpredictable and terrifying. Most movie villains will possess some, if not most, of these and will command the viewer’’s respect and fear. For those villains that possess all of these characteristics and more, we must affirm their status as the ultimate in movie villainy.

This game introduces you to the characters of the classic games of the past, you will learn about the characters you have known and loved all your life, who shaped the types of board games we have today.

By Victor Epand

Board games very often are about a particular story and feature different characters that we all have come to know and love. There are very few of us who wouldn'’t recognize Rich Uncle Pennybags from Monopoly, some of the beloved faces from the children’’s game Candy Land, or any of the iconic characters from the classic detective game Clue. The characters featured with a game are often extremely valuable to enhance the mood and theme of the game, and because of the intense popularity of these games, these characters have become a lasting part of today’’s pop culture.

The mascot of Monopoly, now referred to as Mr. Monopoly instead of Rich Uncle Pennybags, has been widely used and featured with nearly every incarnation of the game since 1946, when he made his first appearance on that edition’’s game lid. We have seen him around frequently since then, and although he is not a playable character within the game, seeing Rich Uncle Pennybags brings a response of familiarity out of most people. Whenever a board game character becomes referenced in outside media, we can be assured that they have become a part of typical pop culture. Ri
