The only way to learn is to read the truth here.

By Rachel Yoshida

Prices for a single gallon of gasoline in the United States have been steadily rising during the past few years. Remember when a gallon of gas cost a measly 80 cents? Remember when it climbed to $2/gallon and people started to complain about the expensive price? Those days are no more, as a gallon of gas nowadays can cost as much as $5 in certain areas of the country.

Sadly, it does not seem like relief will be coming anytime soon. Prices are projected to increase even more because of oil reserves supposedly being depleted at a much faster rate. In a world that relies very heavily on crude oil, organizations are looking towards other methods of fueling our cars. Some alternative sources are ethanol alcohol, vegetable oil, and corn. Another popular alternative is water.

Converting your vehicle to run on both water and gas is not new news. It has been around for several years now but is not discussed in mainstream media. The first conversions came at a hefty price, costing up to a couple thousand dollars. Assembling the items needed to make your car run on water takes a lot of painstaking research, but thanks to small companies, a car can be easily converted to run on gas and water for a hundred bucks or less. A fuel cell is similar to a car battery because they produce electricity.

However, the biggest difference is that a battery will only produce electricity until is completely discharged, in which a replacement is needed, while a fuel cell can produce electricity as long as it is supplied fuel and oxygen. In this case, the fuel and oxygen in the fuel cell is hydrogen and air. The technology used in the experimentation and development of hybrid vehicles is proton exchange membrane, or PEM.

One of its benefits include a low operating temperature, which enables it to produce electricity quicker, and the fact that it does not need a cooling system. When installed correctly, your car can run up to 40% more efficiently. Several kits can be installed in one vehicle to optimize better fuel efficiency. The maker of Water4Gas has about seven kits installed in his Corolla, and it is running at about 70 miles per gallon.

There are numerous websites with lots of information on how to convert your vehicle to run on water. Many offer step-by-step guides on what items need to be purchased, how it needs to be put together, and how to install it in the car. Alternately, for those who are not so adventurous, there are complete kits that are being sold. Some can be found on auction sites and cost about $50 for each kit. There are a lot of great sites that you can find just by plugging in “run your car on water” in a search engine. Happy hunting!

When disaster strikes, it is the people of this great country that has made all the difference.

By Rachel Yoshida

There have been many natural disasters that have occurred in our country over the years, but happened during hurricane Katrina has really stuck with most of us for the years it has been since the tragedy happened. It could be that for the first times we really saw how devastating an event such as this can be because of the hours and hours of news coverage that it had. It was a part of our lives for months as we watched the residents of New Orleans and so many other towns try to get their bearings and recover.

During the storms we watched in anticipation of how bad it was going to be. It exceeded all expectations as we were able to see how many people were driven from their homes and the rescue of those who did not make it out in time and became trapped on the rooftops and even in the water itself. There were people hanging on to trees for dear life. We saw the horrible conditions that refugees were forced to live in at the stadium because they had no place else to go and the government could not respond fast enough to keep everyone supplied with adequate food and water.

This is when so many volunteers came from all over the country bringing everything they could to bring aid to these thousands and thousands of these flood victims. The water damage was everywhere and it was not possible for the refugees to go home even after the water receded. In many cases they were depending on the volunteers to help them renovate and repair their homes, that is, if they had a home that could be salvaged at all.

The supplies that were brought in by churches, other organizations, and individuals were badly needed in the months to come. The clean up work that the volunteer performed was so helpful in getting neighborhoods back in habitable condition. There were doctors and nurses who dedicated their time to help those who were injured and ill because in some cases the hospitals were either damaged themselves or could not accommodate everyone.

For those who did not get a government trailer to temporarily call home, there was simply no where for them to go. It was amazing how people from other states opened up their homes and took in entire families to live with them and help them to begin a new life in a new place. Some people that had rental homes donated their use to some of these homeless families to use until they could find jobs and do better for themselves. Sometimes human kindness knows no bounds during disasters like these, it is just a shame that it takes devastating events such as this to bring out the best in some of us.

With yearly wildfires costing life and money, is there a cure to this problem?

By Rachel Yoshida

Severe droughts have been plaguing many parts of our country in recent years. There simply has not been enough rainfall in so many places. Although droughts are common from place to place at almost any given time, it is not that often that they cover so many states at the same time. It has caused real water shortages in states like Georgia and those who live there have had to limit their use of water to only the things that have been absolutely necessary.

During 2007, Southern California suffered greatly when wildfires started and spread throughout several counties leaving behind charred homes and other buildings. It is especially devastating when urban areas experience these fires because they disrupt so many lives. Firefighters struggled to contain the blazes before they reached homes that were in the path of the fire, but unfortunately they were not able to keep it from many of them.

Firefighters had to try and stop the fires from spreading, but with the bone dry weather and the strong Santa Ana winds to help push the fire along, it was such a daunting task to make any headway at all. Hundreds of families had to be evacuated because the fires were inching ever closer to their homes and it seemed that nothing that was tried could stop its progression. Many of these families ended up in shelters and some were even transported to the San Diego Qualcomm Stadium, similar to those that were sheltered in a Louisiana stadium after hurricane Katrina.

It is shocking when residents like those in a town the size of San Diego have to evacuate because of a natural disaster like this. They have a difficult time believing that it is happening to them. At least seven counties in California were declared federal emergency zones and some families that lost everything only had government aid and disaster relief to help them out. Some of these families did not even have emergency supplies for themselves because they never thought they would have need of them.

This only goes to show that none of us can ever be certain when and where a natural disaster will strike. Whether it is from flooding, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, or fires, it is so important for families to have a survival kit prepared for any of these emergencies. When you are forced to evacuate your home, there can be no telling how long you and your family will have to take refuge somewhere and you at least need to have enough supplies to last a few days unless you want to have to completely rely on the goodness of strangers.

They look more like the oceans and have sunk huge ships just like the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

By Rachel Yoshida

There are countless numbers of bodies of water in the world. They range from babbling brooks, which are streams of fresh water that flow above ground, to lakes to extremely large and vast oceans, such as the Indian Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, and the largest body of water in the world, the Pacific Ocean. Each body of water is significant in its own way. These bodies of water are used as sources of drinking water or leisurely activities, such as swimming, boating, fishing, and more. This discusses the top 5 largest natural bodies of water found in North America.

Lake Superior, located on the border of Canada and North America, is the largest of the five Great Lakes of North America. This lake is the largest freshwater lake not only in the United States but also in the world by surface area. Bordered by Wisconsin and Michigan in the south and Ontario, Canada and Minnesota in the north, this lake boasts a surface area of 31,820 square miles. Its average depth is 482 feet; its deepest is 1,332 feet. Lake Superior houses several islands, the biggest being Isle Royale, which contains smaller islands within smaller lakes. Due to its vast size, it mimics the behavior and climate of the sea, regulating temperatures during the summer and winter.

The second largest body of water is Lake Huron, one of the five Great Lakes of North America. Its surface area measures at 23,010 square miles, which makes it the third largest fresh water lake on earth. The average depth is 195 feet; its deepest is 750 feet. Originally named La Mer Douce, meaning the fresh-water sea, Lake Huron is named after the Huron people who lived in the area when the French explorers discovered the land.

The third largest body of water is Lake Michigan, which is also one of the five Great Lakes of North America. It is the only one of the five lakes that is entirely within the United States border, surrounded by the states of Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, and Indiana. With a surface area of 22,400 square miles, its average depth is 279 feet and its deepest is 923 feet. The state of Michigan and the lake itself is believed to have come from mishigami, meaning great water in Ojibwa Indian.

The fourth largest body of water is Great Bear Lake, Canada’’s largest lake. With an average depth of 235 feet and a maximum depth of 1,463 feet, its surface area measures at 12,028 square miles. From November to July, Great Bear Lake is completely covered in ice.

Finally, the fifth largest body of water is Great Slave Lake, also located in Canada. It covers 11,000 square miles with the maximum depth at 615 feet and an average depth of 105 feet. Like Great Bear Lake, it is frozen for about eight months out of the year. Prior to the construction of highways around the lakes in 1967, goods were transported by semi-trailer trucks that traveled on the thick ice.

The term carbon offsetting refers to the way that that carbon produced, is compensated for by the individual who took that journey. How does it work in practice and are there any alternatives to paying a carbon offsetting company?

By James Nash

The term carbon offsetting refers to the way that that carbon produced, typically by a journey using a carbon-producing mode of transport (plane, car, train), is compensated for by the individual who took that journey.

It is not exclusively used in connection with transport. It is also possible to calculate the carbon output of your house, or office, or even an individuals or a family’’s daily or annual carbon output, and seek to replace that atmospheric pollutant with something that will help to filter it from the environment. This is normally done by growing and planting trees, which absorb the carbon in the atmosphere and replace it with oxygen.

How Does it Work? Well, typically, an Individual or family will contact a carbon offsetting company, who will explain the range of services they offer. These will usually be tree-planting schemes somewhere around the world, but some offer other options. A relatively new term called carbon sinks refers to huge planting schemes that forest vast areas of land, but this scale forestation are normally done for National or Governmental carbon offsetting.

The individual or family representative (or company representative) will then buy carbon credits directly from the company, usually but not exclusively, online. Most companies will be able to work out how much carbon was produced, say from a return flight from London to Paris, and the charge to the customer will reflect the work it takes in tree-planting to roughly replace the carbon produced during that trip.

How do you find a Carbon Offset Company. Carbon Offset companies are now proliferating in the UK and in the western world. Most of them are web-based companies, and they and the services they offer are easy to find by doing an Internet search for carbon offsetting or carbon offset companies or schemes.

It is a good idea to look into the range of companies and schemes they offer before committing to one and buying personalised services. Think about any preferred issues first. For instance, there may be a tree-planting scheme in your area that you would prefer to support, rather than a scheme millions of miles away.

Some companies offer a certificate of purchase and of planting in return for a customer’’s money, but some don'’t. It is always best to shop around, and discuss with friends and family who already use these schemes. Some environmental or community groups have preferred partner status with some offset companies, and it is worth checking these out first.

Another option of course is to bypass the carbon offset companies and do it for yourself. It is possible to buy a piece of land, not so cheap in most parts of the UK anymore, but still possible; and organise regular tree planting on the land yourself. There are websites dedicated to this process, and helping someone calculate just how many trees to plant per amount of carbon produced. Factors worth considering are the regular care and watering of the trees, and getting access to the land on a regular basis.

Also the selection of and correct planting of local, indigenous trees is important. Check with a local nursery or specialised tree supplier what is available, and plant with the seasons. If you have a large enough garden, consider planting more trees and shrubs. A family who flies often and long-distance would have to plant more than the average suburban garden with trees to compensate for a lifetime of carbon production, but a combination of planting at home, locally where possible (in consultation with wildlife conservation managers), and occasionally paying for offsetting from a specialised company would probably compensate for the carbon.

But remember that nothing compensates for carbon output as reducing it.

Climate Change touches upon just about every aspect of our lives, from home to the office to our health. Every time we use fossil fuels - to drive or to heat our homes or to fly or to cook; we are contributing to greenhouse pollution.

With these climate top tips aimed specifically at what you can do at home and in the workplace, we hope to show that YOU can make a difference against climate change.

By James Nash

Tips for reducing your CO2 emissions fall into a number of categories; this article focuses on what you can do at home and in the workplace to reduce your carbon footprint.

At home

Simple measures could substantially reduce the emissions from your home, and save you money as well - you could currently be paying much more than you need to in gas and electricity bills.

1. Does it need to be so hot? Turning the thermostat down by just one degree can save you up to $60 a year on your heating bill and make a real dent in your household’’s emissions.

2. Set your timer efficiently. If you are working regular hours, avoid wasted heat energy by timing your heating to go off 30 minutes before you leave the house, and come on again 30 minutes before you are due to get back.

3. Insulate your loft. You can cut up to 20 per cent from your energy bill by installing good quality loft insulation; it stops heat from escaping and thus requires less energy to keep your house warm.

4. Beat draughts. They'’re the most uncomfortable and obvious signs of a badly insulated house and can be fixed easily with either draught-proofing or secondary glazing. You could also fit double glazing and the most popular energy saving measure, although it actually saves less from a typical fuel bill than installing (much cheaper) cavity wall insulation. Make sure that you specify low glazing, which has a special heat-reflective coating that reduces heat loss through the window by nearly half.

5. Watch the floors. Rooms can sometimes feel cold due to strong drafts rising up from gaps between the floorboards or between the skirting board and the floor. This is easily resolved by investing in a tube sealant, such as silicon. Another way of reducing draughty floors is to insulate underneath the floorboards on the ground floor.

6. Dress your hot-water tank correctly.

7. Reflective radiator panels can fit perfectly behind radiators. They are cheap to buy, easy to install and reflect back heat that would otherwise drift through the wall. They can be bought from DIY stores (avoid those made from PVC), or you can make your own by wrapping tinfoil around cardboard.

8. Draw your curtains at dusk. Sounds obvious, but a thick pair of curtains can stop a huge amount of heat from escaping through your windows.

9. Put a lid on it. Saucepans with lids on heat much quicker, using less energy in the process.

10. Use your oven sensibly. Don'’t keep opening it to check whether your food is ready as this allows heat to escape and will only make your meal take longer to cook, using more energy, And by switching it off just a few minutes before your food is ready you'’ll find that it'’ll stay hot enough to finish cooking the food. Don'’t buy cut flowers. Because of their short shelf life, the flowers are usually flown in which gives them a massive climate change footprint because of the aviation emissions. To avoid this you can buy local grown plants; if you'’re still going to buy flowers, choose those that are local grown and in season.

11. Turn lights off! For comparison, lighting an empty office overnight can waste the energy required to heat water for 1,000 cups of coffee.

12. Buy energy-saving light bulbs. Some of these can use less than a quarter of the electricity of their equivalents, and can last up to 12 times longer. Just one energy efficient light bulb can save you $20 a year on your electricity bill.

13. Make the most of nature. Light-coloured walls, ceilings and floors, as well as mirrors, reflect daylight, making maximum use of natural light and reducing the need to use artificial lighting.

14. Use infrared. If you have exterior lights, ask your electrician to fit infrared sensors so that the lights only come on when you pass in front of them.

15. Resist stand-by. If all UK households turned off their TVs at night instead of leaving them on standby. That goes for PC screens too.

16. Unplug equipment once fully charged. Mobile phones, shavers and electric toothbrushes keep drawing electricity even when the battery is full.

17. Keep fridge and freezer doors closed. Each minute a fridge door is open it can take three energy-intensive minutes for it to cool down again. Similarly, it can take as much as half an hour for a freezer to regain its temperature once a door has been opened for just sixty seconds. And remember to install the fridge or freezer away from hot appliances and direct sunlight.

18. Keep your freezer full. It takes less energy to keep a full freezer cool than it does an empty one. If you don'’t have enough food to fill it, use plastic bottles filled with water or even scrunched up newspaper. If you find your freezer is often half empty, you might want to think whether you need such a large model when it is time to replace it.

19. Think how you cook. Pressure cookers and steamers both save energy; steamers are particularly easy to use and very healthy.

20. Chop finely and boil smart. The smaller you make your vegetables, the less time they'’ll take to cook. Don'’t forget to boil only the amount that you need, and match the size of the ring to the size of the saucepan or you'’ll be paying to heat air and keep electric hobs clean so the rings can work more efficiently.

21. Only use a washing machine on full-load. Ninety percent of the energy that washing machines use goes toward heating the water, so switch to a cooler wash temperature: using 40 degrees for all clothes can use a third less electricity per wash. Today’’s washing powders are just as effective on low temperature programmes, saving both energy and money.

22. Turn down your thermostat.

At Work

23. Reduce office paper consumption. A government-funded Envirowise campaign report, says that office paper consumption is rising by 20 per cent per year. On average each worker uses 50 sheets of A4 a day. If you work in an office, add the slogan “Think before you print” at the bottom of your emails. If you do have to, print double-sided.

24. Switch office equipment off at night. A photocopier left on overnight uses enough energy to make 1,500 photocopies.

25. Invest environmentally. For as little as $500 it is possible to join a co-operative which invests in wind energy projects that promote emission-free technology. Or you could adopt a local renewables project.

26. Install your own renewable energy system. Grants are currently available for up to 50 per cent of the capital costs of installing renewable energy. You might even make a profit: if you produce more than you need, you could sell the excess back to your energy supplier.

There''s nothing like a home grown tomato to make a sandwich the best! It''s simple to grow your own tomatoes. You''ll love them and save a bunch of money as
well!

By Heather Jacobson

Tomatoes are among some of the most popular vegetables to grow in your backyard. Rightly so too, because for some reason, homegrown tomatoes taste about 500% better than store-bought ones. In fact, for a period of time when the tomato prices were unusually high, my husband and I boycotted store-bought tomatoes because they were simply a “cardboard tasting” habit for sandwiches. However, once summer started, we decided to grow our own beefsteak tomatoes. It was just too weird to have a burger without a tomato on it! If you'’re interesting in growing some good-tasting juicy tomatoes as well, here are some tips to help you on your journey.

1. Starting the seeds. Tomato seeds germinate in temperatures 65F/18C or higher. They grow pretty easy from seeds. You simply get some small pots, put some potting soil in them, and bury the seeds according to the seed package directions. Keep the soil moist and keep them in a warm sunny spot where it can get at least 6 hours of sunlight a day. In a few days, you'’ll see your seeds starting to sprout!

2. Starting from plants. The easiest way to start growing tomatoes is to get some tomato plants from the nearest home and garden center or nursery. Select dark green plants that look strong. Make sure it doesn'’t have any tomatoes already growing on it, because that will keep the plant from growing to its fullest size. When you get home, re-pot the plant into a huge outdoor pot or simply place it in the ground where you want to grow it. It’’s good to bury the plant all the way up to the top leaves so that it develops a good solid root base. Few plants can handle being planted this way, but for tomatoes, it works well. Be sure to plant your tomatoes in a place that gets full sun at least 6 hours a day throughout its growing season.

3. Watering your plants. Keep your plants moist, but don'’t over water them. Over watering can do as much damage to them as under watering!

4. Fertilizing your plants. Fertilizing might be a bit of a pain, but it’’s highly important. Most soil these days simply doesn'’t have enough nutrients to produce nice sweet and healthy produce. You can get some good fertilizers at your local nursery or home and garden center that is made specifically for tomatoes. This works well because it'’ll be sure to give your plant the most nutrients it needs.

5. Harvesting your tomatoes. The tomatoes will be ripe when they are nice and deep red. Don'’t pick them green if you want the juiciest and sweetest tomatoes, however, they do last quite a long time if you need to harvest them early. Simply wrap them up in newspaper for long storage.

Enjoy! There’’s nothing like home grown tomatoes!

By Paul Hata

Have you heard about water fuel? Well, it is properly called hydrogen fuel cell technology and it is here to save the planet. Oil and gas prices are soaring higher and higher and there will come a time when people realize that they should consider an alternative fuel energy source.

Admit it, everyday your car emissions are contributing to pollution. If you want to reduce pollution and at the same time save money, you need to make use of hydrogen fuel cell technology; find out more by reading this article.

Hydrogen fuel cell technology is not new. It started more or less eighty years ago but since it is quite expensive, scientists and researchers don'’t find it a good alternative fuel source. Aside from the hydrogen technology, other technologies have surfaced years ago such as the use of vegetable oil and sugar cane to run a car. However, these technologies did not achieve great success because of the hefty price, climate restrictions, and other issues regarding safety on the road. In short, these technologies were unstable.

Hydrogen fuel cell technology is different. In fact, there are now converted hydrogen cars roaming the streets of US, Europe, and Canada. This improved technology is now more stable. Have you tried surfing the internet? The hydrogen fuel cell kits are widely available online and anyone can get it as long as they want to take advantage of the hydrogen technology.

Experts did not find vegetable oil and sugar cane as viable options. Can hydrogen technology offer something different? If you want proof, the technology is proof in itself since it is science reality. With hydrogen technology, you will still need gasoline aside from the HHO generator and conversion tool.

The conversion tool will need electricity from the car battery and this will be used to conduct the process of electrolysis. Through the process, hydrogen will be extracted from water and in turn provide the car with added power. Obviously, at this point in time, hydrogen technology can'’t replace the use of diesel or gasoline. Well, who knows what might happen in the future.

By using this hydrogen fuel cell technology, you can reduce your fuel consumption to a great extent and save lots of money. Now, why did scientists and researchers find this technology viable? The reason is that hydrogen technology is much more affordable now. In fact, car companies will soon offer the public with affordable hydrogen powered vehicles.

Conversion projects are easy to build and are quite affordable. If you'’re interested with the hydrogen technology, surf the net now. Check out the available resources that are in store for you. You will surely get tremendous savings by simply investing on the fuel cell kits online.

Even if you buy the built fuel cells, the cost is still nothing compared to the savings that you will get in return. Well, if you want changes, you definitely have to spend some money. This is a very good investment because you'’re not only helping yourself but you'’re also helping the world.

Find guides online to help you go through with your conversion project. Perhaps you have a friend or a relative who converted their car already. Ask help from them so that the task is immediately finished. If everyone in the world consider the use of hydrogen fuel cell technology, life will improve.

The solutions can be as diverse as the leaders when it comes to such an important issue.

By Rachel Yoshida

Here in America we have always thought we were the land of plenty and in many senses that is very true. We enjoy one of the best economies in the world, we have some of the most beautiful scenery, some of the bravest people, and we have rights provided to us that others in the world still only dream about. When this country was first settled by Europeans hundreds of years ago, it was indeed a land of plenty, plenty of land, food, and water.

When people began to settle areas of the country that had a limited water supply of its own, measures were taken to get water from other areas to where it was needed. This was fine then because the numbers of people that populated these areas were not that many and there was some water available, so it did little harm to those who lived in the water rich areas.

In recent years one place that has become known for not enough water of its own is Southern California. The population there is greater than ever before and those who live there love it and do not wish to live anywhere else. Two-thirds of the state of the Californian population lives in the Southern region. There have been droughts lately that have caused the natural water supply of that area to dwindle and water has been pumped into the southern region from the North of the state.

The Southern region has been so dry that wildfires have become common. Although those with plenty of water in Northern regions sympathize, they do not wish to export so much of their own water resources that it begins to jeopardize their supply of fresh water and endanger the wildlife in their area. East of San Francisco in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta there is one small fish called the smelt that has been noticeably disappearing and it is thought to be a direct result of water being pumped out of the delta and sent south. In the end they were ordered to pump at least one-third less water from the delta not only to protect the fish, but the delta itself.

This ruling has made a bad situation in the Southern California area even worse and many people had restrictions placed on their water usage. It makes you wonder if this is only a sign of things to come as our fresh water supply grows less and less in some places and not only in our country, but all over the world. When people begin to really run out of clean water that makes their survival possible, it is not likely to be a very pretty picture.

The power of water has major effects. Even on something as strong as our roads.

By Rachel Yoshida

It can make for a very uncomfortable car ride when you must travel for a long time down a road somewhere that is riddled with potholes. Potholes can be terrible for the front end and undercarriage of your car especially when you do not see them coming. When you hit a deep pothole doing fifty or sixty miles an hour, it can do some real damage when you do not have time to slow down.

Although all states in our country try as they might to keep up with repairing state highways and interstates, it can be a never ending job to try and keep up with the destruction that roads endure year after year. Focusing so much on the main roads in a state can sometimes leave little funding for back roads that many of us have to use to get back and forth to our homes when we live in more rural areas, but we must drive on them anyway.

There are several things that cause potholes and shoulder erosion to roads, but one of the most severe causes is water. There is no way to stop rain, snow, and sleet from falling on roadways everywhere. Once the roads get wet, it begins eroding the pavement surfaces. It weakens the structure and when heavy vehicles drive over these weakened areas it causes the potholes or cracks. Then as more rain, sleet, or snow falls into they cracks and freeze the pavement, it only causes them to crack and broaden even more. It is an endless process.

Of course, states with larger amounts or rain and snowfall encounter the most damaged roads because some roads have to be salted to prevent hazardous driving conditions. The salt that is used will further weaken the road surfaces. Sometimes there is just nothing that can be done to prevent these potholes that are so annoying. About the best we can do is to try and pay closer attention as we drive to avoid these obstacles in the road.

It is ironic that as much as we detest poor road conditions, it seems that we despise the road work that it required to fix these problems just as much. When we are in a hurry and run into the road crews that are patching or repairing, we get annoyed by the inconvenience of having to wait while they work. We just have to face the fact that life can be annoying sometimes and in order to make one thing better, we might have to be annoyed by the cure occasionally.

Is the earth doomed to massive flooding or is it just a load of hot air?

By Rachel Yoshida

People everywhere are arguing about what is causing the polar icecaps to melt and all the icebergs around the world. It is happening at a much more rapid rate than we expected and it seems that are showing so signs of stopping. What does all this melting ice mean for the world? What effects will it have on our planet over time? Is there anything that we can do to stop it or is it already too late to do anything about it?

Even scientists are disagreeing about the cause of all the melting ice. Some of them are adamant that is because of the global warming that we humans have caused, yet other scientists believe that it is a natural warming trend of the world that has probably taken place before in ancient history. Either way, does it spell some sort of disaster for us that we are incapable of stopping?

Already the polar bears are running out of enough ice to use as their normal hunting grounds. They are quickly becoming endangered and could one day before too many years become extinct if they are not protected and provided with what they need to survive. If all the icebergs melt there will be no way for them to keep up with the food supply that they need.

When and if the ice continues to melt at its current rate, some scientists are predicting that the sea levels will rise and many of our coastlines around the world will disappear and be replaced by new ones. This will give us less land all over the world and things are getting crowded enough as it is. What effect will this kind of rise in sea level have on coastal cities everywhere? Will they become extinct too or have to be rebuilt further inland? What effect will this kind of city destruction have on economies worldwide?

All of these are serious questions that we may have to deal with a lot sooner than we ever imagined. It would be incredible to us to actually see the world making a drastic change such as this right before our eyes. We watch all the scientific shows about horrendous natural disasters in past history such as what supposedly done in the dinosaurs, but what would it be like to actually have to try and live through a world change that will affect us so drastically. We might just have to except the fact that we are after all only human beings and we are powerless to change some things.

There is almost nothing as important as the supply and use of water when it comes to your families welfare.

By Rachel Yoshida

There is a growing concern these days about how much water we use in the home today. We have a tendency to use it literally like there is no tomorrow, but chances are there will be. What if we use up all the fresh water supply we have here on Earth? What would we do then? Well, it probably would not be pretty picture. There would likely be wars to break out everywhere in an attempt to confiscate whatever water could be found.

It might seem like science fiction or something from the Mad Max movies, but at the rate the population of the world is growing and the extreme ways in which the majority of us waste water, it could be a real possibility in the future. Our future generations could have to face this situation much sooner than we could imagine if the world does not begin better protecting and conserving the precious water supply that we have now.

As adults, we must begin teaching our children by example how to be more cautious with the water we use. We can actually still have plenty to use for the things we need it for, only we have to learn not to be wasteful. Wasted water could account for a large percentage of how much we use and it is completely unnecessary. When our children see us wasting water they are more likely to grow up wasting it to.

Discuss with your children not only the importance of water conservation, but with water pollution as well. They should know that it is never alright to throw trash into the water and that dumping chemicals and other residues into our waterways by large corporations is not alright either. There are many ways a family can save water that you can implement into your daily lives.

Teach kids that it is not necessary to leave water running while they are washing their hands or brushing their teeth. This alone accounts for a lot of water waste. You might not think that id adds up to much, but when you multiply millions of Americans brushing their teeth each morning and night, well, it can add up to a huge amount of water for that alone.

Do not wash cars as often or water lawns unnecessarily. Only wash full loads of laundry and dishes. Everyone in the home can take shorter showers. Just by doing these things alone, we can save gallons and gallons every month and your kids will be protecting their future.

Rising rivers cause multitudes of troubles. But you can be prepared.

By Rachel Yoshida

Since the very first Europeans came to the North American continent they have been building settlements along the rivers. This made traveling and transporting trade and sale goods faster and easier than by land. It was a source of fishing and water supplies for nearby residents. This is still much the same today.

In our time, even though we have roadways all across our nation, the rivers are still used to transport things on huge barges. It is hardly used anymore to transport people at all except for the summer vacationers and those who love to fish, swim, and boat. The rivers were and still are a necessity for so many things. Farmers sometimes use them to irrigate crops, but planting crops too near rivers can be a mistake when they decide to flood.

Flooding from rivers is all too common during certain months of the year. Some years will go by with only moderate amounts of rainfall and a river will flow normally and have no flooding. When it rains in the North or they have large amounts of snowfall in the winter months, it can cause the river levels to rise and flood further downstream. Many areas along riverbanks have levees in place to hold the water back when it rises to dangerous levels, but levees are breached all the time when they are not large enough or strong enough to hold back a raging river.

When rivers break over their levees, it can be devastating for those who live in nearby communities or have crops planted there. The river can come raging down quickly and submerge everything in its path with little warning. Thanks to the accuracy of our weather forecast these days, it is easier to predict there is a risk for flooding, but controlling it and being really prepared to battle it is usually not very affective when the water is already on the way.

For those who choose to live in areas where there is more likely to be flooding, their only real defense is to be adequately insured with flood coverage. They can never know from one season to the next how bad flooding could be. Sometimes it could only be a little and then such as happened this spring in the Midwest, it could happen unexpectedly and continue off and on for weeks. The rivers can be a friend or a foe for many. No one tells Mother Nature what she can or can not do and living near where her wrath is likely to show up is just a risk that we take.

The weather that has affected water supplies may be short term, but the need for water is growing by the day.

By Rachel Yoshida

There are not that many people left that you tell you about the severe consequences that many people in the Midwestern United States suffered when there was a drought there that lasted for quite few years during the first third of the twentieth century. People everywhere had to watch as their farmlands literally dried up and turned to dust blowing in the wind. It was almost like a phenomenon. Year after year these farmers waited for relief from the dustbowl that their lands had become.

This past year the Midwestern states have had anything but a drought. They were continuously drenched week after week and instead of their fields and towns drying up, quite the opposite was true. Everywhere you looked in state after state there were fields of new crops that were flooded beyond salvation. This is one year when they were praying that the rain would just stop for a while.

Now it is Southeastern states that have experienced droughts over the past several years and they still have not had much relief. Although it seems that most states have received a little more rainfall than they did last year, places like Georgia are still behind in their rainfall amounts. These droughts for the past few years have caused streams, lakes, and even some river flows to all but dry completely up. Many residents have experienced severe water shortages and tourist spots like Lake Lanier in Georgia have suffered because of the low water levels.

When states suffer severe droughts like those that have occurred lately, many times limits or bans are placed on outdoor water usage. This is to help ensure that there will be enough drinking water and water that is needed for more important things than washing cars and watering lawns. Georgia even tried to have the state line redrawn where it meets Tennessee to have access to more water. Georgia also wanted to stop allowing so much water to flow down stream into Florida.

You know things are bad when states want to start shifting around borders of one state to another and limit the amount of natural water flow from there state into another. Northern California has considered the same thing to limit the amount of water that flows downstream in their state down to Southern California. It has to be really bad when one part of a state does not want to share the water with the rest of the state.

Hopefully there will be more drought relief in the near future. Other states that have also experienced droughts recently are Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Virginia, and North and South Carolina. Experiencing continual droughts this wide spread will take its toll over time and we just have to hope that this is not going to last for very much longer.

They happen fast and are devastating because of the suprise effect. Make sure you are not caught by suprise.

By Rachel Yoshida

No one wants to have to think about what will happen if you and your family suddenly had to deal with a flash flood warning. Would you be prepared? Would you even know where to start or would you have a disaster kit already complied and ready to leave your home at a moments notice? When you live in a flood zone, this is what you will need to do and what you will need to know in case flood warnings are issued.

The one thing you need to know for sure is the difference between a flood watch and a flood warning. A flood watch means that it is possible that a flood or flash flood can occur because conditions are right. A flash flood warning means that you could be in immediate danger and may have to evacuate immediately. Whenever the weather suggests that even a flood watch is possible, keep your television or a weather radio on continuously to stay informed of the latest information.

When you know that a flood watch has been issued in your area, now is the time to check and begin to your enact your disaster plan and check your supplies. You should already have these things stored in the home somewhere and they should include three gallons of water for each person, a first aid kit, canned food and an opener, protective clothing and bedding. Your emergency supplies should also include a battery operated radio, special items for the disabled or infants. You need to have written instructions for how to turn off gas, electricity, and water if authorities ask you to.

When a flood watch has been issued, this is the correct time to also make sure your vehicle has plenty of gas in case you have to flee suddenly. You should not have even waited until a flood watch to know where you and your family will go in case of evacuation. You should have at least three different places in mind in case you were not able to get to one or two of them. If you keep your disaster supplies ready at all times you will be prepared to leave instantly if you must.

Once you know there is a flood watch issued, pay close attention if you live in a flood zone because circumstances can change in an instant. Listen for the first flood warning and then find out if you need to evacuate immediately. If you are in doubt, do not wait. It is better to waste a little time taking steps that prove unnecessary than to wait and be trapped in your home with no way out.

Natural springs are a wonderful gift of nature, so take a glimps into one of natures wonders.

By Rachel Yoshida

For some of us there is simply nothing as relaxing after a long work day than coming home, drawing a deep hot bath, and soaking until our heart is content. It helps to soothe away all of the stress and body tensions we build up during the day. People have been doing this for thousands of years, but in past history it was not always as easy for others as it is for us. Heating enough water for a large bathing tub and keeping it hot throughout the soaking time could be quite difficult unless you were fortunate enough to have servants to do the water heating for you.

Almost everyone has heard about how the ancient Romans used natural hot water springs to build some bathing facilities. One place that was developed by the Romans was a place called, not surprisingly, Bath in Somerset, England. During the Elizabethan period Bath experienced a resurgence of popularity because of the spa like baths. The aristocrats loved to visit there and take the waters, as they would say, because they believed that they had healing properties that could relieve or even cure many ailments.

Natural hot water springs such as the ones in Bath can be found literally all over the world. These springs can be found in several states in America and Canada. They are caused by geothermal heat. To put it simply, the rocks are heated underground sometimes by volcanic magma, sometimes not, and the ground water is heated. Not all springs, such as the geysers in Yellowstone National Park are suited for using to bathe in because they are super hot to the point of boiling. These super heated springs are usually the ones that are in volcanic areas.

People believe that the heavy mineral content in these springs combined with the heated water can promote healing for those with disabilities. There have been many rehabilitation clinics built at these springs because of this belief. A good hot bath can usually make anyone feel somewhat better and if it promotes healing that is even better.

Not all of the effects from natural hot water springs are good ones. These springs are sometimes just the right temperature for infectious bacteria to thrive. It is possible that bathers over the years could have become infected with some really serious things, even meningitis, as a result of using the hot springs. So before you decide to jump into a natural hot spring somewhere, it might be a good idea to read up on them a little more to see if the risk of using them might be greater than the therapeutic value they could have.

This is one subject that most need to learn about but few ever show interest until it is too late.

By Rachel Yoshida

There have been so many areas in our country that have been experiencing wildfires that have threatened businesses and homes. Southern California, Northern California, Wyoming, Florida, and others have not been spared from dealing with this dangerous and destructive force. Although occasionally these horrible fires are set by crazy arsonists, they are normally a natural event caused by droughts and wind.

The response to wildfires in any area of our country has one similarity with water flooding because so many people must evacuate their homes when the fires remain uncontrolled and near their homes. Many times these people will only be given a few hours or less to gather what they can and get out to a place of safety the same as with a natural disaster flooding event.

Lightening strikes will cause some wildfires and sometimes they will just ignite because of very dry and brittle brush when temperatures soar. Sometimes humans will inadvertently cause the fires to start by throwing out a cigarette or burning brush. Accidental this might be, but it turns deadly none the less. Once a wildfire has begun it will destroy everything in its path as long as there is fuel to continue feeding the flames. When wilderness or unoccupied areas of land becomes overgrown with ample amounts of brush and dead tree debris, it provides the perfect fodder to keep a wildfire going for days or even weeks.

As hard as the local firefighters try to battle these runaway blazes, sometimes there is simply not very much that can be done. It is usually impossible to get fire trucks and other equipment in to where the fires are. Another method they must use is flying overhead and dropping water or fire retardant chemicals directly on the fires or near them to help prevent further spreading. These planes and pilots that use these fire bombers put themselves in danger just as the fire fighters on the ground do.

When water can be gotten to the homes that endangered, firefighters do their best to wet down the area around them, but this does not guarantee that the homes are out of jeopardy. Many homes end up burning to the ground anyway with little anyone can really do to stop it. Sometimes families will have nothing to go back home to after the fires have finally been extinguished or naturally play themselves out.

We think that wildfires are a horrible thing and they are, but it is really just a natural occurrence that clears debris and eventually renews life to overgrown areas. The only thing that can be done is when tracts of land are cleared of the natural debris that feeds the fires. Homeowners can protect their property a little by keeping brush and debris cleared off of their property too, but even that is no guarantee that their homes will be saved when a wildfire gets too close.

An indepth and accurate summary of the essential legislation that is the Waste Incineration Directive.

By Shaun Parker

Waste incineration has been a traditional method of dealing with unwanted domestic and industrial waste since man was rubbing sticks together to create fire. In 1970 the first waste incineration plants were functional that harnessed the power in the chemical reaction created by the incineration. As with many technological developments the by-products and environmental effects were not considered fully.

The UK today greatly lags behind the rest of Europe in waste incineration due to the wide availability of landfill sites, however in recent decades the gradual recognition that this method of waste treatment causes massive and constant release of methane into the atmosphere has caused the environment agency to initiate schemes such as, the landfill tax and the landfill allowance trading scheme.

Due to alternative waste treatments, waste incineration has increased in popularity which has caused for the practice to be tightly regulated. This is due to potentially toxic fumes and by-products created from the incineration process. Heavy metals such as, manganese, vanadium, nickel, arsenic, mercury, chromium, lead and cadmium are emitted which can be toxic at miniscule levels.

There are other potential pollution problems if waste incineration is left unregulated which is why the Waste Incineration Directive was produced by the European Parliament in December 2000, defining process, regulation and penalties of waste incineration. In December 2005, some five years later the deadline was made by the environment agency not for operators to have a Pollution Prevention and Control or PPC permit, but to have applied for one.

This means that if you burn liquid or solid waste of any description in a technical unit then you must meet minimum technical standards and maximum omission levels. Technological advances in waste incineration systems, especially filters have seen it become one of the most environmentally friendly methods of waste treatment. This is only true if the strict conditions regarding omission levels and by-product disposal of the directive are followed to the letter.

On 6th April 2008, the PPC and the Waste Management Licensing or WML regimes merged to create Environmental Permitting or EP regulations. There has been no change to the PPC regulations of 2000 and it is now a combined initiative tackling emissions to land, water and air. The Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has in depth waste incineration directive guidance, covering everything from hazardous waste incineration to the cremation of human remains.

The only way of ensuring waste incineration conditions are followed is to choose a reputable supplier of gas filtration systems and filters. This can potentially be a high capital outlay however can avoid heavy financial penalties or business closure. Certain air filtration systems compatible with waste incineration can guarantee 95 percent below WID emission limits rendering it the most effective form of waste disposal, even more so than recycling.

You could be helping yourself and the planet by eliminating meat from your diet.

By Rachel Yoshida

In an effort to save our planet and limit our consumption of one of our most precious resources, news broadcasts, magazines, newspapers, and even local supermarkets are spreading the word. Save water, they say. Limit your consumption. Recycle. Drive gas-efficient vehicles or hybrids. Buy products that are eco-friendly and have been made from recycled ingredients.

Change your light bulbs to utilize solar energy. But there is one thing that every American can do that will greatly impact the amount of water that is saved every year. The only problem is, it’’s not a popular idea. Most feel threatened by this idea because it questions their habits and forces them to undergo changes in their lifestyle that they are very comfortable with. This idea and lifestyle has been around for centuries and is increasingly gaining popularity as more people become aware of its damaging environmental properties. What is it called? It’’s called vegetarianism.

Now, before you go off on a tangent and completely write off this idea as ludicrous, hear me out. This is not PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) propaganda scheme to save the animals from wretched conditions, although treating these animals as humanely as possible is not necessarily a bad idea. After all, they ARE unwillingly giving up their lives to provide food for us.

No, a vegetarian diet has been proven to be the best way any person can go green. Environmentalists who preach about cleaning up littered beaches and planting trees are criticized for their hypocrisy. Even Al Gore, who made the critically acclaimed documentary ‘’An Inconvenient Truth'’, is criticized for riding around in a gas-guzzling SUV, using too much electricity in his big estate, and for not adopting a vegetarian diet.

How, you ask, is going vegetarian going to help save water? The answer is simple, and what I'’m about to say is only tapping the surface of the benefits of vegetarianism.

It is estimated that a whopping 2,500 gallons of water are used to produce a single pound of beef. Think it’’s unbelievable? Think again. Water is fed to the animal from the time it is born up until the time it is sent to the slaughterhouse. A cow can consume about 50 gallons per day and more than 18,000 gallons per year. A cow raised for its meat is usually slaughtered anytime from 3 to 5 years of ago, amounting to more than 54,000 to 90,000 gallons of water annually. Even worse, a dairy cow is typically sent to slaughter when it is 7 to 9 years of age, amounting to over 126,000 to 162,000 gallons of water in its lifetime.

These numbers have been scientifically proven, and its evidence is backed by the trillions of gallons of water we lose in our underground aquifers every year. And this is just the beginning. Modern day factory farming has taken its toll on our planet. Imagine how much water can be saved by simply cutting down on meat consumption, going vegetarian, or eating a vegan diet, which is not eating any animal products, including meat and dairy products. We must do every thing we can in our power to combat water shortages. Think about saving the planet for our children and the future generations.
