Some may argue this, but there is no comparison to the fire oven with this popular pie.

By Rachel Yoshida

Pizza is one of the most popular and most-eaten foods in the world. For those who are unfamiliar with what a pizza looks like, it is generally a round, flat piece of bread that is topped with pizza sauce, cheese, usually mozzarella, and various toppings. These toppings range by region, but the most common ingredients are pepperoni, sausage, Roma tomatoes, olives, mushrooms, and onions. The pizza is believed to have originated from Naples in Italy’’s Campania region but has spread to other parts of the world. In the United States, several chains have opened, including Pizza Hut, California Pizza Kitchen, and Roundtable Pizza. While these pizzas are one of the most sought after foods in America, the pizza connoisseur knows, however, that pizza goes far beyond slapping a piece of dough and slathering it with toppings. There are many who have not had the delightful experience of tasting an authentic pizza with excellent quality ingredients. Using only the fresh and finest ingredients that arena’’s derived from a can, a package or pulled out of your freezer are the first step. The second step is to cook the pizza in a wood fired pizza oven.

Wood-fired ovens have been used for centuries, dating back to ancient Rome, where excavations have unearthed brick ovens. They have also been found all throughout Europe, not differing from the models found in Rome. A brick oven can vary in size and shape, but each is similar. Stone, slabs of wood, or layers of tough terracotta bricks can be used to make the base of the oven. An igloo-shaped cover with one small opening on its side, typically made of clay bricks or other material, is placed over the base. A common method of piecing the two pieces together was to cover it in mud, which acts as a sealant and seeps in any cracks. Some ovens also placed a funnel on top of the igloo-shaped cover so the smoke can travel out of the oven.

Cooking in wood-fired oven is very much like cooking meats and vegetables on a barbecue. The end result is a fantastic meal with flavors that cannot be mimicked with other techniques. Cooking a pizza in a modern contraption at a local pizzeria or in your oven at home can usually take several minutes, but in a wood-fired oven, the pizza can be done in as little as a minute. Because of the intense heat from the fire’’s flames, the pizza must be turned 180 degrees to ensure that the pizza cooks as evenly as possible.

If you have never had authentic pizza, either take a trip out to Italy or visit a local pizzeria that is not a chain. You will be pleasantly surprised and possibly hooked!

Looking at how one can hold a good dinner party without having to spend out on lots of money for decent cutlery and chinaware.

By Anna Stenning

This may not be so important for some people, but for me getting good tableware in a new flat or house, for housewarming parties or dinners is an essential part of the eating or socialising process. There is nothing more satisfying than eating out of a beautifully decorated bowl or plate, with an exquisite selection of gourmet foods of soups, neatly presented on well decorated dining table and a complimentary folded napkin shaped like a swan.

Even in the comfort of your own home, one is able to recreate that restaurant feel, without having to spend out on designer tableware, cutlery and dishware. Informal feasting in an open plan kitchen or dining room has become a trendy event, rather than spending time on putting up a three-course meal and setting the table up fit for a royal banquet. This is now something of an old heritage and it is now in with the sociable gathering of friends and family munching on finger food and helping themselves to what is placed in front of them.

However, what makes this more appealing is the continual trend for simply designed plates, dishes and tableware. During the mid-eighties and late seventies, many will remember the floral designed china that parents used to store away for special occasions that were coated with a gold or silver rim and made with an unusual texture to it. Some were even brightly coloured, painted with polka-dots and looked like it was designed for a make-believe children’’s tea party.

Keeping special and expensive dishes stored away for special occasions is still something that many of us continue and have adopted from our predecessors, but gone are the days whereby everything is designed with complicated patterns and pictures telling a story of fantasy and mythical creatures. Many people prefer to buy tableware which are large, neutral in colour and made from a durable material. The general majority use fine china, porcelain plates and melamine, because they are good for long term usage and tend not to crack or chip so easily.

These days restaurants, large or small, serve their foods in a fashionable manner without even trying. Have you ever noticed how the plates are large, deep filled and come with shiny silver cutlery? There is nothing more appealing than eating out of a plain white dish, which is well-presented so as to feed the eyes as well as the taste buds. People like to see that their food is placed in such as way that makes it look interesting and stands out from the dish.

This makes for a more modern and chic look as opposed to being put off by the fuzzy fading images printed onto your plate. Some dishes are not always circular in shape and are available in a variety of sizes, such as square with a smooth edging, oval for appetisers, and large round soups with a lip, and rectangular plates for presenting finger foods. Soup spoons have also progressed from simple large and deep filled, to small porcelain ladles, taking on a traditional oriental style.

Tables are also simple in design as more people prefer to use colours of a neutral theme, with matching runners, places mats and napkins. These are usually available for cheap prices, rather than being made by designer manufacturers. Dinner parties are not necessarily an expensive event, which requires one to spend out on designer products and pricey ingredients. These can be enjoyed with the hosts looking to impress their guests with simple designed dishware and showing off their culinary skills.

Gone are the days of making dinner parties, as more and more people edge further into sociable and informal banquets. The display of foods remains an important tradition, without having to pick out elaborately designed china.

Focussing on the comments from the Prince of Wales recently, this informative article outlines the debate surrounding GM crops.

By Shaun Parker

The Prince of Wales has recently reopened a can of worms that had laid relatively dormant for almost a decade. It is of course is the debate of genetically modified crops against natural fresh foods. The king in waiting recently made comments to a journalist that were recorded in which he delivered a scathing attack on GM foods, saying that it could be one of the greatest natural catastrophes of all time.

The regent favours fresh foods from natural crops and claims that GM foods are pushing out small producers whilst destroying soil and polluting water. It is claimed that GM foods are the answer to world hunger as they can be designed to withstand more severe conditions and more resilient to strong fertilisers or pesticides. The Prince does not agree and claims that it is all a ruse to industrialise the farming of fresh foods.

In the 1960s we saw a similar problem in the US under the Nixon administration. Farming fresh foods turned into big business, forcing many independent land owners to sell up and seek employment in the towns and cities. This effectively changed the face of America, some believe for the worse and many of the Nixon advisors were senior executives of the conglomerate fresh foods corporations.

The concerns voiced by Prince Charles are focussed on this occurring on a global scale. As opposed to natural fresh foods being produced by independent farmers for their livelihood, they would be completely dependent on the companies who have developed the GM food technology. This would mean the corporation would be the only supplier of fertilizers and pesticides, the price of which could be pushed up whenever to keep the farmer in debt.

This is not the only concern that the Prince voiced. GM foods are genetically engineered foods which means that their DNA has been altered for a certain purpose. They can be made more resilient to herbicides so that stronger chemicals can be used protecting them that will not kill the plant. Also they can be made with additional nutritional content than natural fresh foods. This concerns the Prince who believes that this could prove harmful to humans and the environment.

He is not alone as a senior scientific advisor believes that there could be some grounds for concern. It is thought that from alterations such as resistance to pesticides, insects could develop an immunity to the pesticides which could cause plagues of insects, destroying the crops and leaving natural fresh foods more vulnerable to infestation. Prince Charles is not alone in his fears as many officials and countries have shared these concerns.

A senior scientific advisor has sided with Prince Charles and natural fresh foods, also in 1988 over 60 countries voted unanimously against GM farming opting for natural fresh foods farming at the 11th annual IFOAM conference. Unfortunately this has not changed a great deal as the lobbyists have been hard at work since then, governments around the globe have been infiltrated by GM cheerleaders.

The Prince has taken a firm stance supporting fresh foods from organic sources for ergonomic, economic and environmental reasons. Fresh foods from organic sources are readily available to most developed countries however with food prices rocketing, many consumers are being priced out of the market. This has opened the door for GM corporations to start a campaign focussed on bringing down the cost of food via GM fresh foods.

It may even be worse than that, you could have more devestating company that you do not want there.

By Rachel Yoshida

It might be difficult to keep count of how many times a day the average size family will open the refrigerator. It can be when meals are being prepared or just when someone wants a snack. When kids are getting what they want and sometimes putting things back in, it can become a pretty messy place to store food even though that is exactly what it is for. When it is hard to get kids to keep their rooms clean, you can bet there not going to take very much care with keeping the refrigerator clean.

With all of those grubby little hands going and coming everyday, leftovers being put in and taken out, and occasional spills and splatters, the fridge can get really nasty inside and out. It can be a chore to try and keep it clean at all times, but it should be done at least once a week to keep down germs and bacteria and to keep it from taking forever to get done after you have let it go for a few weeks.

Keeping the refrigerator clean can be easier than you might have thought if you just make a habit of certain things even when you have kids. It is not good to leave leftover items in the fridge so long that they get moldy. Mold is extremely unhealthy and it can spread to other items in the refrigerator too if they are uncovered. Rule number one is to not put uncovered leftovers in there to begin with. This will keep the food from drying out and help keep odors down.

Odors can be better controlled by putting an open box of baking soda in there. Make a point to clean leftovers out on a regular basis. If you choose a certain day of the week to inspect for items that need to be thrown out, it will keep it from becoming overcrowded and keep anyone from eating anything that has gone bad.

Many people will try to do all their grocery shopping once a week. Before you do your weekly shopping is a great time to clean out the refrigerator. This means leftovers and also checking the expiration dates on bottles and other containers. Once you have done this, use a disinfecting cleaner to wipe down all the inside and outside. If the storage drawers or racks are dirty, go ahead and take them out and clean them while the refrigerator is closest to empty. It is much better to get rid of the old stuff before you put in the new stuff and it will be clean and ready when you return from the grocery store.

Follow these steps if you want to drink good coffee.

By Anthony Sastre

Coffee, the drink of choice to start, end, and get through the day for millions. If you are reading this then you are probably one of those millions, or is it billions? Either way, there are a lot of us that would never dream of getting through our day without this wonderful brewed beverage.

When you think about it, coffee may be one of the driving forces in our world. How many works of art, great pieces of literature, business ideas, government policies, or anything else for that matter were fueled by this beverage? Thinking like that boggles the mind.

As much as coffee is used to fuel the day for so many, nothing can bring the day of a coffee lover to a complete and jarring halt than a badly brewed or stale cup of coffee. The good news is, anyone can make a terrific cup of joe. Here are some things to remember while preparing that next pot.

The first thing to keep in mind is the tool of preparation, the coffee maker. Do some research and take your personal preferences into account. There are so many drip, percolator, French press, and espresso machines out there, you need to find one that is top notch. Luckily, finding a good product is not hard.

Percolators are almost obsolete. Drip coffee pots usually are of pretty good quality, and many people have their favorite brand names. Espresso machines can be a bit more tricky, always do your research as the quality is different from machine to machine.

You may look at French press pots and wonder what could go wrong. Well, is it a large pot? Do you need a thermal French press, or will the decorative glass pots suffice? I once had a French press pot with a two part plastic lid that trapped water between the pieces, which then stagnated. So even French presses should be scrutinized.

Also, check out the new one serve devices out there. You know, the machines that use various (pods) of coffee. Be careful though, these are not usually favored by hardcore coffee lovers.

After finding the right coffee maker, you should now look to the most important of ingredients to a great cup of coffee, the bean. When possible, buy whole beans, preferably freshly roasted. This however is not within the time constraints or budget of all.

If you have to buy ground coffee, buy the product in the smallest amount you can find and buy often. Coffee goes stale fast, and the difference between a good, fresh cup and a cup made from stale grounds is staggering. But fresh, buy small, and buy often and you ca not go wrong.

Water, the fluid of life. Here is where a lot of people ruin their coffee experience. Water used for coffee production should be clean and cold, and preferably filtered. Tap water has chemicals and a taste that can alter your brew. Try your best to use already filtered water, or check out some of the newer coffee makers with built in filters. Your taste buds will thank you.

Now, you have your maker, your ground coffee, your clean water, now you have to put it all together. The amount of coffee to use is personal to each drinker. Some people like strong coffee and others not so strong. Notice I did not say weak, as no self respecting coffee lover would tolerate a weak brew.

If you have a drip pot, try a rounded tablespoon, up to two for a stronger brew, for each 6 oz cup. The same can be used as a guide for French press pots. The single brew machines and espresso makers usually have guidelines to follow in brewing.

So you are now enjoying your favorite brew, and you have dialed in your favorite method of producing that brew, now what? Well, you want to keep that brew at a high quality level, thats what.

Clean your pot regularly using soap and water. If this is not enough to remove the residue from old batches, then try baking soda or vinegar. Look to the user guide that came with your maker, especially if you use an espresso machine, as you may need to do special cleanings from time to time, such as lime removal.

Always make sure that your water filter is up to date. Most filters need to be changed once a month, but if you are a heavy user, the filter may need to be changed more frequently.

It is not hard to make a great pot of coffee. I know this article may seem a bit much to some people, but for a such loved beverage, it is worth it. Once you have the perfect cup, there is no going back to the mediocre.

Enjoy your brew!

Bavarian Grill is located in the North West corner of 75 and Parker Road. Offering a authentic German menu with live music.

By Dave Russell

What’’s not to like about a restaurant that is attempting to add a bit of German culture to the fellow citizens of Plano Texas?

Bavarian Grill is located in the North West corner of 75 and Parker in the back of the shopping center. Bavarian Grill offers a large menu with traditionally prepared German menu items including Schnitzel, Gulasch, Rinder Rouladen, and even Sauerbraten.

The restaurant also features a bier garten where patrons can come and enjoy a pint or two from a large selection of primarily German Beers. The Bier Garten like the restaurant is waited by friendly staff.

My experience with the Bavarian Grill was quite nice. However, I think they need to reconsider their house band. The restaurant is entirely too small to house a 12 person polka band. I am all for a true oktoberfest like experience but I shouldn'’t have to yell over the band in order to converse with the person across the table from me. Also for a restaurant that is asking 20 dollars a plate seating should be more comfortable than a picnic table.

A restaurant charging what Bavarian Grill charges should feel more astute than the bar around the corner with two dollar pitchers. However, I do appreciate the authenticity of the menu however it is out of sync with the restaurants atmosphere. For that price I should be able to expect both a great menu and a wonderful atmosphere, not have to ask the waitress for ear plugs.

Speaking of the wait staff, which were very friendly however the traditional Bavarian outfits were a little over the top. It was kind of like being at Disney Land and having Mickey Mouse and Cinderella bring you your drinks.

I must admit that the menu items were well prepared and were quite authentic. The Schnitzel was thin and as large as the plate. The Rinder Rouladen was tightly rolled and covered in a well flavored brown gravy. However, I wouldn'’t say that the quality of the food was worth the 20 dollar a plate price tag. Especially for a place that was more sports bar than restaurant.

If I was to rate the restaurant in Plano, I would have to say its atmosphere is a 4 and its beer selection is a 4 as well. However, they need to work quite a bit to make the dinning experience more enjoyable. They could always keep the band in the beer garten so that people eating could converse normally. So all in all, it’’s an enjoyable place and adds to the cultural diversity in Plano, however until they find away to make the atmosphere match the price tag, I am going to have to rate it at 3.

By Zach Thompson

What is all the hype about goji juice, goji berries, and glyconutrients about? Goji juice is a healthy supplement to our diets that can help with your overall well-being and keep you feeling well. The glyco nutrients in Goji juice are not found in abundance in our regular diets, only two of these are in most diets, but they can be easily supplemented with as little as an ounce of this healthy juice everyday.

Goji juice is rich in beta carotene and vitamin C, important carotenoids that have been proven to help keep the body healthy. Along with glyco nutrients, Goji juice also contains geranium which no other fruit is known to contain. It also has important polysaccharides that offer significant benefits to your overall health. Goji juice provides eight essential amino-acids and trace minerals that include zinc, copper, and selenium in addition to glyconutrients.

Goji berries and goji juice also provides Vitamin E which is normally only found in nuts and seeds along with B-complex vitamins and fatty acids. Goji berries provide 11 milligrams of iron per every 100 grams of fruit to the diet. The protein in goji juice is also said to be higher than that of wheat. Even without glyco nutrients, goji juice is a very healthy drink and should be a part of our everyday diet.

The glyconutrients found in goji juice are special sugars that we normally do not find in abundance in our daily diet. This group of eight glyco nutrients are building blocks that incorporate into the cells of your body and are involved in many biological functions. Glyco nutrients affect each individual cell’’s structure and help with cell to cell communication which offers protection for all the cells in the body.

Glyconutrients work on the premise of keeping the cells healthy which keeps the immune system strong. The blood, the immune system, tissues, glands, and internal organs all depend on healthy communication between the cells to function properly. When the cells miscommunicate it is believed that is when abnormal changes occur to the cells such as the change that free radical damage causes to cells.

Communication in the body starts breaking down without all of the glyconutrients in our diet. Problems set in when the cells can'’t recognize the good cells from the bad cells so they lose the ability to repair and defend each other.

All eight glyco nutrients are very important to the health and communication between the cells. Since our modern diet is lacking in some of them due to things such as green harvesting and processing, goji juice is the perfect addition to our diet to make sure that our body has all the glyconutrients that it needs to stay healthy. A little bit of goji juice does a lot of good for the body and helps keep all the cells in the body working together correctly.

A look at how sausage making is still as popular as it was thousands of years ago and can be anything from a staple food to something a little more luxurious.

By Catherine Harvey

Sausage and mash is considered one of the best English dishes. Whatever your budget, there is a sausage out there that you can afford, that will taste delicious and that can be utilised in many ways to serve up as a reasonably impressive dish for guests or simply as an everyday meal or snack.

Sausages made from premium cuts of meat are mixed with rare spices and a degree of fat and fashioned into the typical sausage shape for those with plenty of money but if you'’re not wealthy then you can pop into any supermarket and pick up a packet of sausages. Sometimes the meat content is dubious and it has always been assumed that sausages are made up of the dregs of an animal that can'’t be used for any other purpose. But this isn'’t always so and manufacturers are making more effort these days to fill sausages with better quality meat.

Sausages with vegetables, Yorkshire puddings and gravy, sausage and mash with liquor, sausage and chips or sausage and chips, even vegetarian sausages - mix it up any way you like but there will be a sausage to suit.
Nowadays, we have food processing equipment that makes the whole sausage making procedure swift and easy. Meat is automatically ground down to the correct consistency, mixed with fillers, spices and fat and fed through into skins and they are even divided into ‘’links'’ by the same machine. But it hasn'’t always been like this.

Sausages are not a modern food. Records date back to 500bc of kitchens that produced sausages in one form or another. People took great care in the mixing of special spices and the rarer the spice the better the sausage was considered to be. Of course, back then food processing equipment consisted of butchers who would create everything from the sausage skin to stuffing methods and sausage making became quite an art.

Early American colonies were fond of sausages because meat was an expensive commodity and they were instructed to use every part of the animal except the snout. To do this, they would use up the intestines, bladders, uterus, stomach and all parts of the pig to grind down, mix with spice and then cover with a layer of melted fat. This produced a sausage that could then be smoked and thus preserved, lasting for quite some time in cold cellars and providing family food for months.

Smoked sausages were also a favourite with soldiers. These were one of the few foods that they could be sure wouldn'’t go off too quickly and would provide, in their basic form, a pretty good source of sustenance. They would also have taken black pudding, which is a form of sausage made from pigs blood and this is still a popular dish today, proving further that no part of an animal is wasted.

Over the years, people have found ways round the fact that food processing equipment had yet to be invented. Sausage fillers were made from funnel shaped objects and these made the whole process a little easier as the less handling of the delicate sausage skins, the better. One of the most frustrating things about making a sausage would have been the splitting of the skin whilst filling as this skin not only acted as a way of holding the contents together but would also have been used as a preservative.

So, whatever the method, whatever the animal part, whatever the spice and whatever the price, there is a way for everybody to enjoy sausages.

Informative article on the benefits of polycarbonate drinking glasses over traditional glassware.

By Shaun Parker

Polycarbonate glasses and glassware are a versatile and tough alternative to standard or traditional glassware, and are becoming more and more popular in drinking establishments and premises throughout the UK. Gone are the old days of plastic glasses being easily recognizable as being made of plastic and looking cheap and cheerful, today the polycarbonate glasses on the market are as good as if not better than real glass due to the virtually unbreakable quality of the materials, coupled together with the look of real glass.

The polycarbonate barware available on the market today is constructed from the same material used in many applications where the strength of polycarbonate is unmatched, such as motorbike crash helmets, bullet proof glass, riot shields and DVDs. Other benefits of polycarbonate over glass is its excellent transparency and reduced weight compared to glass (polycarbonate weighs about one sixth of glass) and also its superior insulating properties in comparison to traditional barware.

Many pubs, clubs and nightclubs are realising the benefits of changing from glass to polycarbonate glasses and these are becoming more popular and ever present in these type of premises, as establishments realise that breakages are becoming a thing of the past as the polycarbonate glass is virtually unbreakable and cannot be smashed no matter how much force is applied to the product, a polycarbonate glass will withstand tonnes of pressure and years of abuse.

Polycarbonate barware can withstand the rigors of a busy environment and is totally dishwasher safe. Many establishments are being advised by their local authorities, police or councils to switch from glass to plastics for safety reasons, as violent incidents involving glass attacks are becoming more frequent and serious in nature. Some pubs clubs or nightclubs have to change to polycarbonate as a requirement of their liquor license.

Many establishments are choosing to use plastic or polycarbonate glassware for their customers taking drinks outside to the smoking area as a dropped polycarbonate glass will not smash when it hits a hard floor surface unlike a traditional glass, this saves the bar staff having to waste time clearing up breakages eliminating the health and safety issues surrounding broken glass and its removal.

Choosing polycarbonate glasses is a much safer option for the customer and staff alike, as an impact from a polycarbonate glass is much safer than an impact from glass as the polycarbonate will not smash on impact and therefore will not cause as much damage to a person as an impact from traditional glass would; making polycarbonate glasses a less offensive weapon in the wrong hands. Anybody who has ever purchased traditional glasses will be aware of the huge range available to choose from, this wide choice of shapes, styles and ranges now also applies to plastic and polycarbonate glassware.

There is a large range of plastic barware now available to choose from including pints and half pints all government stamped and CE marked for serving measured amounts of alcohol, also there are many tumbler or hi-ball type polycarbonate glasses to choose from and also single shot glasses. Wine glasses are also available in all the usual ‘’wine by the glass'’ measures with the CE marked line stamped onto the glasses in various sizes.

In short all types of traditional glasses are available in polycarbonate versions with many different ranges to choose from. The question to ask yourself is not why you should change to polycarbonate? Instead ask the question why shouldn'’t you change to polycarbonate glasses? Yes polycarbonate glasses will be more expensive initially but they will last longer and therefore will not need replacing as often as traditional glasses.

Basics of choosing essential catering equipment for the kitchen and the table.

By Shaun Parker

You don'’t need to be Gordon Ramsay or have a tendency to ‘’do a Delia'’ to revel in the delights of a well kitted kitchen and dining space. Quality equipment is what it is all about. We'’re not necessarily talking about spending a small fortune on items like the Juicy Salif to milk your morning OJ; true satisfaction comes from functionality. From toasting the daily bread to serving up a birthday buffet, there is whole host of equipment that makes cooking and hosting a breeze.

The oven is the heart of the kitchen. It’’s size and functionality depends on whether you'’re cooking for just a couple of people or feeding an expanding family; like to heat a ready-meal or experiment with herbs, spices and local produce. The choice is almost overwhelming: convection for quicker cooking, combination for multi-functionality; dual fuel with an electric oven and a gas hob; options of hotplates, griddles and wok hob burner.

There are even specialist ovens available to cook pizza, potatoes and rice. A salamander grill is an essential item for grilling fish and steak, flash-heating and browning and is best suited to the commercial sector, so not likely to be found in grandma’’s kitchen!

Once the cooking source has been decided, cooking equipment needs to be chosen. Go for basics like cast iron casserole pots that can be used on the hob as well as the oven, ceramic dishes for pies and lasagne, a heavy frying pan with a lid for versatility, and plenty of saucepans in a range of sizes. Depending on whether you are running a commercial kitchen or a family home, the types of utensils needed will vary. Tab holders and thermometers are a must for a business, along with portioners and condiment bottles, but are over the top for household cooking. Skewers, ladles, wooden spoons, spatulas, whisks, can openers and colanders are the basic utensil essentials.

The more adventurous might like to invest in a blow torch to finish off a creme brulee, and maybe even a hostess trolley. The most important implement for any chef, whether budding or in full bloom is the knife. A well balanced and super sharp knife makes short and precise work in any food preparation. Once again, the choice can be overwhelming, so keep it basic at first with one each for bread, carving, utility, boning and paring; and then build on a knife collection as preparation experimentation expands.

When it comes to serving up, it pays to have plenty of versatile dishes, baskets and cruets in a range of sizes to cater for any cuisine and any occasion. Investing in a Lazy Susan means that sharing a selection of food at a seated meal becomes a less stressful experience; the rotating centrepiece saves spilled drinks and stops the inevitable cry of ‘’pass the salt!'’.

Baskets for breads and rolls can be used for starters and at breakfast time, or to bulk out a buffet. Ramekins are another must, as they can be used to prepare individual dishes and desserts, make pates and butter portions or hold dips for chips at more informal dining events. Remember to arm yourself with plenty of serving spoons and tools, from tongs to skimmer spoons.

Accessorizing a table for dinner is the final step in setting off a lovingly cooked meal. Choose ornate additions that glam up the table, brightly coloured napkins with engraved holders twinned with classic silver cutlery and matching place holders with colourful tags. Try decorating the table with flowers and sequins for special occasions, or having crystal glassware and candles for a more sophisticated look, it will all add to the occasion and keep the soul as satisfied as the stomach.

Austin like most cities in Texas is a place where people love their BBQ. This article is a list of some of Austin''s most famous BBQ joints.

By Ki Gray

Texas BBQ is legendary slow smoked meats served with or without sauce, with our without sides. Although Llano, Lockhart and Taylor boast the most storied BBQ joints in the state, Austin holds its own with some incredible BBQ options. Whether holding to the bottom line of Texas BBQ, beef brisket, or expanding out to include sausage, pork ribs, or chicken, BBQ lovers can find down-home joints, high-tone restaurants, and even music venues serving up Austin’’s finest.

Stubb’’s: Probably the most famous Austin BBQ originally came from Lubbock, in the plains of West Texas, where C.B. Stubblefield’’s hickory-smoked meats and heavenly sauce fortified a burgeoning music scene, including Joe Ely and Jimmie Dale Gilmore. In Austin, Stubb’’s sauce was bottled informally until the restaurant and music venue bearing his name in tribute, opened on Red River. With an outdoor amphitheater and an indoor nightclub, concert goers can chow down on great ‘’cue before the show without losing their parking place! (801 Red River / Austin, Texas 78701 / 512.480.8341)

Iron Works: Downtowners and out-of-towners alike flock to this unassuming corrugated metal shack, lured by the aromatic smoke curling throughout the business district. The Iron Works was formerly just that an iron working business, but in 1978 the building got a historic designation and the family began serving up BBQ. They also offer custom smoking of any meat you bring to them . (100 Red River / Austin, TX / 78701 / 512-478-4855)

Sam’’s: This east side institution serves their delectable fare until late in the night, making it a favorite of the local musicians and music fans. The building might seem a little run-down, but make no mistake this is some of the finest ‘’cue in Texas. Sam’’s is justifiably famous for its friendly service, musician-friendly hours, and an offering not found at many other Austin joints melt-in-your-mouth mutton. (2000 E 12th St / Austin, TX 78702-1702 / (512) 478-0378)

Green Mesquite: Located just south of the river, along “Restaurant Row” on Barton Springs just adjacent to Zilker Park, this funky, charming spot is one of Austin’’s favorite BBQ joints. Their meat combos are popular, and they offer other temptations like some of the best fried catfish in the area. The decor is purely South Austin with neon, music posters, cushy booths and a checkerboard floor. Cold Shiner Bock on draft, bluegrass in their biergarten - this place is hard to beat. (1400 Barton Springs Rd / Austin, TX 78704 / (512) 479-0485

Lambert’’s: A relative newcomer to the River City’’s BBQ scene, Lambert’’s Downtown Barbecue is one of the more upscale joints in town to dish out some well-made Texas food. Located in a renovated building in the burgeoning 2nd Street shopping and dining district, Lambert’’s features live music, mostly jazz and DJs, in addition to grilled steaks, seafood, inventive sides, and of course, fine smoked meats. Beef and pork ribs, the ubiquitous brisket, and “fancy” surprises such as quail and trout emerge from their oak burning smoker. (401 W 2nd St. Austin, TX 78701)

By Arnold Hernandez

Type 2 diabetics cannot eat like a normal person and have to avoid eating in excess. They have to control their glucose level by eating in moderation or more but smaller meals per day than normal persons. Every meal has to carry as much nutritional value as possible and fortunately there are many natural foods that are loaded with nutrients. These foods are excellent for everyone not just type 2 diabetics. The foods help you maintain or lower your weight, they fight disease and help you live longer.

These are some of those super foods:
Beans
Blueberries
Broccoli
Carrots
Chilis
Oats
Oranges
Pumpkin
Salmon
Shitake mushrooms
Soy
Spinach
Tea (green or black)
Tomatoes
Turkey
Walnuts
Yogurt

Blueberries: Have antioxidants and phytoflavinoids, and these berries are also high in potassium and vitamin C. These berries can lower your risk of heart disease and cancer, they are also anti-inflammatory. As rule darker berries have greater anti-oxidants and it does not matter if the berries are fresh or frozen.

Salmon: Salmon and other fish are rich in Omega 3 which is excellent for maintaining a healthy heart, joints, and memory. It helps lower the risk of heart disease, it helps arthritis, and may may help with memory loss and Alzheimers. Preferred fish are wild salmon, herring, sardines, and mackerel. Two or three servings per week are required to have a meaningful effect on your health. Other foods that contain omega-3 are fortified eggs, flax seed, and walnuts.

Soy: Helps lower cholesterol. High cholesterol is often found in person with type 2 diabetes and a diet should therefore include foods that help reduce cholesterol. Studies have show that a diet rich in soy fiber, proteing from oats and barley, almonds, and margarine from plant sterols lowed cholesterol as much as the most widely prescribed cholesterol medicine. Include tofu, soy milk, or edamame as a part of your regular diet to help reduce your cholesterol levels.

Fiber: Also helps to maintain healthy cholesterol levels and also aids in weight loss. A diet high in fiber will help maintain your cholesterol and glucose at healthy levels. Most natural foods are great sources of fiber, such as whole grains, beans, fruit, and vegetables. Beans should be fresh, frozen or dried. Canned beans have higher levels of sodium.

Tips that would help you when it is time to clean your coffee maker.

By Anthony Sastre

How to clean a drip coffee maker is not as complicated as one might think. The pot itself is glass, just like any of the glasses in your cabinet, therefore any good dish liquid will clean it. If it is really stained, ice and salt will clean it very effectively. Crushed ice works best but use the smallest pieces you have and fill the bottom of the pot with it, add about a tablespoon of salt and swish it around. For the top, simply take some of the ice and salt mixture in a cloth and rub it along and around the rim.

The outside of the pot is no different than your toaster or any other appliance. Any good surface cleaner should do the job. Make sure it is unplugged when you clean it to be on the safe side. The ice and salt will also clean the burner. If your coffee maker is white and there are coffee stains that would not come off with your regular cleaner, one drop of bleach on a sponge will take it off. Rinse it well.

For the inside of the coffee maker where you pour the water, white vinegar cleans it quite nicely, but it does need a little scrubbing if you have not cleaned it for a while. A dish-mop comes in handy for this job. If you are unfamiliar with the dish-mop, they look like miniature mops, usually on a wire handle. Their primary use is for cleaning tall glasses, baby bottles and things of that sort. They can be purchased anyplace that sells kitchen utensils such as dish drainers or dish cloths.

Pour some vinegar, about a cup or so, into the coffee maker. Use the dish-mop to clean the buildup, running the dish-mop all around the bottom and sides, then tip the coffee maker over the sink and pour it out. Fill it about half-full of water, swish it around and pour it into the sink as well.

Mix one part white vinegar with one part water (the amount of which your coffee pot holds) and pour it into the coffee maker. Place the coffee pot under the brew basket, plug in the coffee maker, and turn it on. Allow the water and vinegar to go through.

Once it has gone through the coffee maker, turn off the brewer, pour the solution out, pour fresh water into the coffee maker, and turn it back on. Run two or three more pots of clean water through the coffee maker to finish rinsing it.

There you have it. Now you have a fresh and clean coffee maker ready to brew you a fine cup of coffee or tea. For regular maintenance, one pot of the white vinegar and water solution should be run through the coffee maker each week, followed by at least two pots of clean water.

It goes without saying that the earliest food for any baby, including a vegan baby, is breast milk. It benefits your baby’’s immune system, offers protection against infection, and reduces the risk of allergies. Be especially careful that you are getting enough vitamin B-12 when your breastfeeding. Also, make sure as its imperative that your infant receives at least 30 minutes of sunlight exposure per week to stimulate the body to produce adequate amounts of vitamin D, since human milk contains very low levels.

The iron content that is within breast milk is also generally low, no matter how good the mother’’s diet is. The iron which is in breast milk is readily absorbed by the infant, however. The iron that is within breast milk is adequate for the first 4 to 6 months or longer. After the age of six months has come to pass, it is recommended iron supplements are introduced.

Soy milk, rice milk, and homemade formulas should not be used to replace breast milk or commercial infant formula during the first year. These foods do not contain the proper ratio of protein, fat, and carbohydrate, nor do they have an adequate amount of many vitamins and minerals to be used as a significant part of the diet in the first year.

Many people out there tend to use iron-fortified infant rice cereal as the first food. Cereal can be mixed with expressed breast milk or soy formula so the consistency is fairly thin. Formula or breast milk feedings should continue as usual. Start with one cereal feeding daily and work up to 2 meals daily or 1/3 to 1/2 cup. Oats, barley, corn, and other grains can be ground in a blender and then cooked until very soft and smooth. These cereals can be introduced one at a time. However, they do not contain much iron, so iron supplements should be continued.

When a baby becomes used to cereals, fruit, fruit juice, and vegetables and other such things can be introduced. The fruits and vegetables you introduce should be well mashed or pureed. Mashed banana or avocado, applesauce, and pureed canned peaches or pears are all very good choices. Mild vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, peas, sweet potatoes, and green beans should be cooked well and mashed. Grain foods such as soft, cooked pasta or rice, soft breads, dry cereals, and crackers can be added when baby becomes better at chewing.

Now that you are pregnant, you are wondering if your decision to become vegetarian can still be carried out successfully during your pregnancy.

By Uchenna Ani-Okoye

Now that you are pregnant, you are wondering if your decision to become vegetarian can still be carried out successfully during your pregnancy. And while it is possible for you to obtain all the nutrients your body will need during pregnancy through a well-planned, nutrient-dense vegetarian diet, careful planning and observation will be crucial to your overall success transitioning to vegetarianism during your pregnancy. In other words: take it slow and be smart!

A good vegetarian diet generally consists of a wide variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, lentils, and nuts and some eggs and dairy or their equivalent if you so choose. Fast food, highly processed junk foods, and canned fruits and vegetables are eaten rarely if at they are eaten. It’’s imperative that you make wise food choices at such a crucial time, since a pregnant woman generally only needs approximately 300 more calories per day and only about 10-16 extra grams of protein; however, the body’’s requirement for certain nutrients increases significantly.

Every bite you take is very important when you'’re pregnant. While the RDAs (recommended daily allowances) for almost all nutrients increase, especially important are folic acid, iron, zinc, and vitamin B-12. Attention to adequate amounts of vitamin B-12 is crucial for vegetarians who choose not to eat eggs and dairy.

Make sure to work closely with your healthcare professional during this transition. The changeover process from a meat-eating to a vegetarian diet can be rough on your body as it actually goes through a detoxification process during the transition. So, you want to be sure that your baby is getting all the nutrients that it needs at this time, and is growing and developing at a healthy rate. Start the process very slowly; perhaps maybe only one or two days per week eating a vegetarian diet.

Gradually work in the soy and plant-based proteins into your diet, and little by little use them to replace the proteins that you'’d usually obtain from eating meat products. Be sure to adequately supplement your new diet with a quality prenatal supplement, and make sure you get adequate amounts of exercise and exposure to sunlight to promote your body to naturally produce vitamin D.

With careful planning, observation, and your healthcare professional’’s guidance, the transition to vegetarianism during your pregnancy can be a cleansing and healthy start for both you and your baby to a lifetime of optimal health.

Tips that would help you make the right decision when deciding on purchasing a large drip coffee maker.

By Anthony Sastre

Coffee, enjoyable, beneficial, and one thing many people crave throughout the day. Whether you are buying a coffee maker for home, or for a business, it is important that you find the right coffee maker for your needs. If you find that you are in need of a large drip coffee maker, there can be several different options available to you. Here are some tips and suggestions for buying the right large drip coffee maker.

THE USE:
If you are buying a coffee maker for home use, you will first want to focus on how fast and how much coffee you will be drinking or serving at once. If you drink a lot of coffee, or spend a lot of time entertaining, you will want to buy a coffee maker that will hold coffee and keep it fresh. For single use, you can choose to buy a coffee maker that will pour coffee one cup at a time, while keeping the coffee maker full of coffee, and keeping the freshness until the very last cup. This can also be helpful for small business owners whos business is not based on coffee. If you are a large company, or if you will be serving coffee to friends often, I would recommend buying a coffee maker with a steel craft that will keep coffee hot. This way you will always have coffee available to you, and it will be hot and easy to pour multiple cups at once.

SPECIAL FEATURES:
When buying a coffee maker, you may want or need special features that are specific to each individual coffee maker. Some of these features include being able to remove the craft or pot before the coffee maker is finished brewing, or a coffee maker that can switch from two thermos cups to a craft, or coffee makers with automatic timers. Other beneficial features can include a removable, washable coffee filter, or a built in water filter to help improve the fresh taste of coffee. You might also want to consider buying a coffee maker with a temperature control so you can set your coffee to stay at a desired temperature.

A FEW HELPFUL TIPS:
If you do choose to buy a coffee maker with a built in filter, you might want to look for a large filter cup. Some types of coffee, especially freshly ground, can produce foam or depending on size of the grind hold a lot of liquid which can cause the machine to overflow. You will also want to ensure that you take out the filter when putting the coffee grounds in, because some machines will also overflow if there are any grounds sitting in the rest of the drip area and causing a block. You will also want to look for a coffee maker that is easy to clean. It is important to ensure a fresh crisp tasting coffee by cleaning the coffee maker when coffee oils start to build. When buying any coffee maker or appliance, make sure to check the warranty.

Mudgee is a beautiful wine growing region in Australia. Here is a backgrounder on the wine, the region and a few reasons you might like to consider a wine tasting trip there.

By Nick Nelson

Mudgee wine comes from the beautiful Mudgee wine region in New South Wales in Australia. The region is located on the inland side of the Great Dividing Range. It is around 250 kilometers to the west of Sydney. The altitude of the region, around 450 meters, helps it escape the severe heat that can be seen in Australia.

The climate in the Mudgee region is milder because of the altitude. The altitude helps the region escape severe heat of lower locations in this area. It is still very hot in the area and the wine vintage of the area is a full month behind other areas.

There are roughly forty wineries in this area. Some have associations with wineries from other areas. Most of the wineries in this area are small family owned and operated. The main pioneer wineries of the area are:

Di Lusso Estate

Manfield Wines

Lowe Family Wines

Mystic Park Winery

Italian varieties are the main interest of these wineries. The Vinifera Estate has Spanish influence and makes Tempranillo and Graciano. Attempts to produce wines of the white varieties in this area have not been very successful. It appears to be too warm in the area for most white varieties.

The Region is well known for the vast array of boutique wines. There are over 35 small individual Cellar Door outlets in the region. Each of the wine makers seeks to make each wine uniquely. The small outlets give consumers an opportunity to see the wine industry up close and personally. The experience gives the consumer a very unique perspective on how wine is made.

The Mudgee wineries experience is very special. People who visit the Mudgee wineries come away with a new outlook on Australia wine. Mudgee wines bring back traditions that are centuries old. It is not just about the wine, but about family and friends. Mudgee wines are perfect for any get together with family and friends.

The Mudgee wineries also offer convenience to their new found customers. The wineries will parcel post any wine of your choice to your home on a monthly basis. The Mudgee wineries offer a personal touch you won'’t experience anywhere else in the world. The Mudgee wines have a character and personality all their own.

Experiencing Mudgee wines changes how most people think about wines. Drinking Mudgee wine can give one a new found appreciation for wine. The Mudgee wine experience often impresses ale drinkers. They discover what the rich bouquet of a great wine can do for a meal.

The secret of the Mudgee wine region is out. You should purchase your Mudgee wine now because the price will surely rise with the new found popularity. Mudgee wines are very special. Once you experience Mudgee wine you will wonder why you ever drank anything else.

The other great thing to know is that a lot of the wineries in Mudgee also offer accommodation and there is a thriving restaurant scene in the town of Mudgee. if you are thinking of taking a culinary holiday then you are going to have a fantastic time exploring Mudgee.

About The Author

When you get to the Mudgee wineries, consider checking out Mystic Park wines - they have a fantastic selection of wines and also offer accommodation on their beautiful vineyard. Mudgee is a great place for wine lovers and culinary holiday makers, so have fun.

By Anthony Sastre

It is possible to buy drip coffee makers that will grind beans, work on a timer or probably even play the theme from Spider Man. That is not what we are talking about here, though. This is about buying a simple unit that will get you your dose of caffeine without giving you a headache in the process. I have found the two most important factors are long term reliability and having a carafe that pours well.

Unfortunately, it is pretty hard to judge the reliability of an unknown coffee maker. They tend to become history when the heating coil breaks or a non-replaceable fuse blows. The only guide here is to buy a model that someone you know has owned for a while or buy from a company you feel has good credibility with their small appliances. Otherwise, you will just have to wing it.

The issue of the carafe is interesting. There is little that is more frustrating than buying a coffee maker with one of the dreaded dribble carafes. You try to pour a cup of coffee from one of these and it goes everywhere but in the cup. Owners often feel that the problem is with their coordination, when what they are facing is simply poor design. It should be possible to bring a bottle of water into the store and test how the display model pours before you buy, but I have never actually seen anyone do this. If nothing else, it should make good theater.

If you plan to put your new coffee maker under a kitchen cabinet or in some other confined area, you might want to measure just how much space you have before you buy. Most coffee makers fill from the top and have a hinged lid that must be lifted. Trying to wiggle this in and out of a tight space can be pretty annoying, especially if you have not had your coffee yet.

Coffee makers that stop flowing when the pot is removed allow you to pour a cup before the entire pot is finished brewing. This is a must for all you impatient types out there who simply can not wait.

Coffee tastes best from a glass carafe. Some people inadvertently have backhanded the carafe into their sink while cleaning, smashing it to pieces. Obtaining a replacement carafe can be more trouble than buying a new coffee maker and cost nearly as much. If you have obliterated your carafe more than once, you might want to buy a coffee maker with a plastic one. While the coffee wont taste quite as good, it will taste better than no coffee at all.

Most people replace their coffee maker right after the old one stops working. Often, they are just not interested in all the fuss and bother involved in shopping around for a new model. They may even buy the first reasonable looking coffee maker they come across. Surprisingly, this approach is not as shortsighted as it might seem. A basic coffee maker is both a simple and inexpensive device. While one bought at random may not have exactly the features that you want, it is pretty likely to do a credible job.

How to make a great cup of coffee in a drip coffee maker.

By Anthony Sastre

Whether it is that first morning cup of sunshine or the inspiration that follows dinner, coffee can only be truly enjoyed when it is good coffee. Although the coffee that is used is very important, so is the preparation of it.

Drip coffee makers come in different sizes, and therefore require different preparation. The same way you make (and love) your coffee in a 4 cup maker does not mean that it will taste the same when you make 4 cups in the 12 cup maker.

Start with a clean coffee maker and decanter. To maintain a clean coffee maker, wipe it down with a damp cloth after every use, including under the filter basket and brewing station. (Just because you do not see under there does not mean you do not have to clean it.) Wash your decanter, lid, and filter basket in warm sudsy water. Periodically, brew a combination of vinegar and water through the machine, and then follow it with 3 or so brews of plain water. You can also purchase chemicals made specifically for this cleaning purpose.

Once you have a clean station, measure your coffee using a coffee scoop. Start with one slightly rounded scoop per cup of coffee. Add the coffee to the filter basket and then insert the basket into the coffee maker. Next, measure one cup of COLD water (yes, it must be cold) per cup of coffee. Do not measure by ounces, but rather by your actual coffee cup or mug, since this is the amount of coffee you actually want to produce. You can pour the water into your cup and then directly into the coffee maker, or you can pour the water into your cup, then into the coffee decanter. The coffee decanter method will help determine how much water for the next time, and the decanters spout may also make it easier to pour the water into the coffee maker. Turn on the coffee maker and smell the air. Enjoy.

Depending on how you like the taste of the above coffee, you will modify the scoops for the next run. If the slightly rounded scoop tasted weak, brew the next pot using very rounded scoops. If it was strong, try a flat scoop instead. Once you experiment with a couple of different variations, you will have your perfect coffee. Note: you will have to repeat this every time you try a new flavor of coffee; as the strength of the beans varies, so will your scoops.

Remember you need to do the above steps for each coffee maker. You can not assume that the 4 cup marking on your small pot is the same as the 4 cup marking on your big pot. Always measure using the actual cup or mug from which you will be drinking.

A few other tidbits about good coffee:

If you always drink filtered water, then you should use filtered water for your coffee. The taste will make a difference.

Better quality coffee does not usually require as much of a scoop as a cheaper bean. (It may be the difference between a flat scoop and a heavily rounded one.)

Coffee is best when ground fresh, so if possible, buy whole beans and grind it yourself.

Coffee should be stored in a dry, airtight canister.

Coffee should be enjoyed with every sip. It is OK to indulge alone or with friends.
