Tips to get started with antique collecting and investing.

By Matt Chang

Antiques are fun to collect. In addition, they can be very profitable acquisitions if done correctly. Here are some tips to help you on your path to starting to collect antiques.

Check out yard sales, flea markets, classifieds, and estate sales. Many times a seller will not realize that what they are selling is indeed an antique. He/she just may be mistaken in believing that the object is just something that is old, dusty, in need of repair or in need of refinishing. If this is the case, you may get the object at an inexpensive price. There will be times that you will be able to purchase great deals because some else is selling or liquidating pieces on behalf of another person and not know the true value of the products.

Don'’t be intimated by real antique dealers and traders. Just know that at places where you are working with traders and dealers, you won'’t find killer deals, but you will find great pieces. Know upfront the values of what you are looking for so you aren'’t taken advantage of by the dealer. Not all dealers are scammers. This can be a great place to meet and find some great honest people that can help you get great product.

Look to the internet for antique deals. If you can find something and buy it in person, you can also find it on the web. You can find websites for local, state or even antique dealers located out of the country. These websites can offer you advice on finding certain antiques, offer you advice on how to pick the perfect antique purchase and will even show you want antiques they have to sell. If you are starting out, you may want to keep local until you get a good feel for values and pricing.

Know what to look for. There are a few key indicators that will help you determine if something is an antique or not. Some of those items are square nails, hand stitching, other hand work, slight imperfections that imply non mass produced items. Tags, labels, and serial numbers. Also, take the time to start to understand the key terms and styles that go with the particular areas that you are interested in. Lastly, look for better craftsmanship than you find in currently made mass produced items.

Start out buying things that actually give you satisfaction. If you buy for satisfaction as well as value, you can start off by doing something that gives you pleasure, and you are more likely to continue with the hobby of collection.

Start small. Start with one piece. Move on to a couple of pieces. Don'’t rush the buying process. Keep learning and studying as you slowly grow your collection.

When shopping for antiques, dress the part. Don'’t look too successful or look like you have tons of money. Downplay your presence. If you look like you have lots of money to spend, then people will try to get you to depart with it. Look casual, and unassuming.

Go early. If you are heading to an antique market, remember the early bird catches the worm. Try to show up on the first day and try to be there as close to opening as possible. If you aren'’t, you may lose the best pieces. Another strategy that works well in reverse with flea markets and garage sales is to go late. Many times, you can find great deals at the end of the day because a seller just wants to get rid of product so they don'’t have to take it back.

Lastly, know your limitations. If you don'’t know something, or are unsure, don'’t be afraid to get a trusted expert opinion. Pay a few hundred to save a thousand dollar mistake.

Antiques are fun, and can be great investments. Just remember to start small, and build up. Learn as you go, and gain information from people who are knowledgeable.

Postage stamps were first issued in Great Britain in 1840. The practice soon became common all over the world to show that the postage had been paid on a piece of mail. A stamp is a sticker attached to the top right hand corner of an envelope or package. Since stamps are in different denominations, if a piece of mail is larger or heavier than a standard size letter, several stamps may need to be attached. In order to send any mail through the postal service, you must buy these stamps and affix them to the mail. You can buy envelopes with the stamps already attached or you can buy sheets or rolls of stamps from which you select the ones you need.

Stamps are not always rectangular in shape. There are triangular and circular designs available and even pentagonal. The first countries to use adhesive stamps, which were invented by an English schoolteacher, Sir Rowland Hill, were Sierra Leone and Tonga, which were actually in the shape of fruit. The stamp used by Bhutan is very unusual in that it contains the national anthem on a playable record. The most common material used for issuing stamps is paper, but some have been embossed with gold and in Switzerland, one type of stamp was made from lace.

There are different types of stamps that are used to denote that postage has been paid. These are:

* Airmail Stamps: The word airmail appears on the stamp and they are usually larger than the regular stamps for envelopes. Like the regular stamp they do give the name of the country and the price paid.

* Coil Stamps: These are stamps that you can buy through a vending machine. You tear off a stamp from the coil when you want to use them.

* Commemorative Stamps: these are stamps issued by countries to commemorate a special event that occurs in the country. There may be several of these in any one year, but they are only available in limited quantities.

* Definitive Stamps: These are the main stamps used by a country and are printed and reprinted in large quantities. They are available in many different denominations that would be needed to make up the postage needed to send mail.

* Express Mail Stamps: These are stamps used for mail that needs to arrive in a very short time. There are usually envelopes for such a purpose that contains the postage necessary.

* Military Stamps; The Armed Forces of countries have their own official stamp to use on mail that they send.

* Official Stamps: Only government agencies and bureaus are allowed to use these stamps that are issued by the governments of all countries.

When new stamps are issued, stamp collectors can buy miniature sheets or souvenir sheets that contain only a small number. At various times there have been people depicted on definitive stamps, as well as animals, birds, buildings and events. However, the main stamps used for everyday use contain a number that denotes the price of the stamp.

By Warren Wong

There are rare and valuable stamps in all postal systems of the world. Two of the best known of these are the Inverted Jenny, which was a printing error and the 1-cent Z grill stamp from the US postal system. Anyone who is a serious stamp collector will tell you that there are five most valuable stamps in the world and all are trying to have them in their collections. However, they are very rare and thus, very expensive. These valuable stamps are:

1. The Three -Shilling Banco from Sweden, which is yellow in color, was printed in 1855. This stamp is valuable because the yellow was a mistake in the color of the stamp. The yellow paper that was used in the printing was supposed to be for the 8-shilling stamp. The usual color for the 3-shilling stamp was green. Only one copy of this stamp has ever been found. This was in 1885, when a young Swedish boy was looking through his grandfather’’s stamp collection. No other copies of the stamp have surfaced and this rare stamp was sold in 1996 for the stunning price of $2.3 million dollars to an anonymous collector.

2. The Two-Pence Stamp of Mauritius was issued in 1847. This was one of the first stamps ever issued by the British island colony. The reason that this stamp is so valuable is because there was a mistake made in the printing. A local watchmaker was given the contract to print two stamps - the two-pence stamp and a one-penny stamp. He made the mistake of printing the words “post office” on the stamp instead of the words “post paid”. More than 200 of the stamps were printed before the mistake was discovered. In spite of the large number printed, there are only about 30 of these stamps in existence today and are estimated to be valued at about $600,000 each.

3. The rarest of the valuable US stamps is the 1-cent Z Grill, also called the Franklin Z-Grill. This stamp was printed in 1867 and depict a picture of Benjamin Franklin embossed on a Z-Grill, which is a tiny pattern of squares embossed into the stamp and visible from the back. The stamp was printed in an effort to allow the ink from a canceling stamp to seep into the stamp paper. In this way, those who wished to cheat the post office by reusing stamps would be unable to do so. However, the practice of using such a stamp was not very practical and they were discontinued. One of these stamps sold at auction in 1988 for almost a million dollars.

4. The first stamp issued in Hawaii was the Hawaiian Missionaries stamp of 1851. The name came from the fact that the missionaries on the islands used them to send mail back to the US mainly used them. They were printed in three denominations - 2, 5 and 13 cents. The rarity of these stamps is due to the fact that the pictures were very crudely drawn and that they were printed on poor quality paper. The 2-cent version has a value of $750,000 if it is unused and about $200,000 if it is used.

5. The British Guiana One Cent Black, which was printed on magenta, was first issued in 1856. These stamps were issued as an emergency measure when there was a lack of stamps in the colony. They were rather crude and were printed in only two denominations - I-cent stamps for newspaper postage and 4-cent stamps for use on letters. They were printed on magenta colored paper and depicted a sailing ship, along with the name “British Guiana” and the motto “we give and we seek in return” printed in Latin. The only surviving stamp was sold in 1980 for $935,000.

Precious metals, conch shells and bartering have all been utilized by civilizations through the ages in the exchange of services or goods. This early form of money, or proto-money, was used before the invention of real currency. In ancient times, a bag of rice might have been exchanged by someone for a bag of beans. The challenge of this bartering system is that it can often be a challenge for two people to determine the actual value of an item, or agree on terms if the items being exchanged are not of use to someone.

To rectify this challenge, countries began establishing systems of commodity money. At first these commodities came in the form of cattle, tobacco, and even salt. But imagine the challenge faced by those who had to carry bags of salt or owned a commodity such as seeds or produce which are perishable. Instead, coins made of metal became a favored choice of proto-money. Gold was also a standard choice in both the Egyptian and Sumerian civilizations. Coins bearing the mark of an authority that bear it can be traced back to ancient Lydia, or Turkey, where metal objects were first introduced as money. Soon, other countries began minting their own coins set with specific values. The issue of the first paper money can be traced to China around 960 A.D.

The use of commodity money eventually evolved into the use of representative money. This new system guaranteed the worth of paper or coins, backed up by banks who issued a receipt to depositors which indicated the amount it could be redeemed for in gold or silver money. Eventually, the receipts themselves were used to trade as money since they were “as good as gold.” An example of this is the British Pound, which once upon a time could be redeemed for a pound of sterling silver. This gold standard was the basis for the use of representative money for most of the 19th and 20th centuries.

In 1913, the Federal Reserve System was established as the America’’s central bank created to regulate the flow of money and credit. A year later, the Federal Reserve Notes, comprising more than 99 percent of today’’s U.S. paper money, were issued. These represented direct obligations of the Federal Reserve System and replaced National Bank Notes as the preferred form of paper money.

Today, representative money has been replaced by fiat money. Latin for “let it be done,” fiat refers to the money that has been given value by a government fiat or decree. The U.S. switched to a fiat money system in the early 1970s. As many currencies in developed counties were tied to the U.S. dollar, this change created a fiat system for most of the western world’’s currencies.

In an effort to improve security and keep a step ahead of counterfeiters, a new series of National Bank Notes were introduced in the 1990s. These notes have an embedded security strip and include microprinting. Most recently, the notes have again undergone a face lift with the enlargement of the appearance of denominations, simplified borders, and off-center portraits.

With the advent of online banking, electronic payments, debit and credit cards, much speculation has been made regarding the future of a “cashless society” And while these systems offers convenience and efficiency, many of today’’s consumers like to balance the security of online banking practices with the use of a little cold, hard cash.

Did You Know?
At any time, $200 million in notes may be in production.
Currency is designed, engraved and printed 24 hours a day.
Only the front of a dollar bill is valuable.
By the mid-1800s, nearly one-third of all circulating currency was counterfeit.
The United States Secret Service was established to control counterfeiting.
In 1781, the Continental Congress chartered the nation’’s first “real” bank in Philadelphia.

By Bruce Rama

While it is very easy to spend lots of money on all the equipment that is available to the beginner in digital photography. You only need to get a few basic items to start learning how to take great photos. There are some essentials you need to have, like obviously a camera and a camera bag. Also items like batteries, memory, tripod, lenses and filters should also be on your shopping list. Below is a list of equipment you should consider when you want to get more out of shooting digitally.

A Camera. With the advances in digital technology, cameras have become feature packed. Cameras that range from simple point and shoot models to top professional level workhorses worth thousands. Features to look for in a camera are resolution, lens quality, image transfer mechanism, and wether you want goodie like movie modes or panoramic capture. The features and abilities of your basic digital camera has exploded over the recent years. So much so that with a little practice and the right equipment absolute beginners can take amazing photos.

An essential link in digital photography that is often underestimated by the beginner is your PC. Crunching data to process the photos you take with your digital camera takes a bit more processing power than just normal Word or Excel work. It is more RAM memory that is generally more useful than a faster processor. If you want to really get into image editing then you will have to spend a bit of time optimising your PC/laptop setup.

Digital cameras really chew through the batteries when you want to take a lot of photos. The best thing to do is buy several sets of rechargeable batteries, since they will pay for themselves in the long run. If you can, and I highly recommend it, buy an AC adapter from the camera vendor you bought your camera from. Use the AC adapter when you are doing tasks like transfering images to your laptop. Also when you are displaying your images on a TV if your camera has that ability.

When you are not using that camera it should be put snuggly away in a camera bag. Go for a camera bag that lets you arrange your equipment in a way that will protect them from damage. Water Proof! Most people take digital photos when on holidays in foreign locations and that can often make them targets for local thieves. So consider looking for a bag that doesn'’t look like it is holding camera gear.

If you want to get stunning close-ups or spectacular long-range landscape images, then a tripod is a must. Again approach the vendor that you bought the digital camera from for the right type of tripod for your camera. Most digital cameras today are light and small so the tripod does not have to be big or flashy, it just needs to hold that camera of yours steady.

Filters for your camera can reduce the effects of Glare. Consider purchasing lenses for extreme close-ups or wide-angle shots, that are beyond the range of the lens that came with your camera. Lenses and filters can lead your digital photography into all sorts of new directions.

When starting digital photography, you should only get the equipment you need to learn the basics of good photography. As the technology becomes accessible more and more people are taking up digital photography as a hobby. A lot of beautiful moments can be captured and saved with the right type of digital camera equipment. A beginner does not have to shell out lots of money to enjoy taking photos. Some basic pieces and your imagination can lead to some breathtaking photos.

Photography is only mastered after years of experience and practice.

By Daniel Millions

The art of photography is something that many people all over the world have come to love and enjoy. It is not something that is just enjoyed as only a hobby any longer. The creativity and skill that is involved in being able to achieve a beautiful photograph, is something that has grown tremendously over the years. There is a large amount of individuals who are able to enjoy this form of art as their career choice.

There seems to be something magical about the way that a skilled photographer allows us the ability of sometimes feeling as if we are able to travel to those far away places we see in so many photographs, as seen through the eyes of the photographer. Many times, as you are looking at a professional photograph, it is often very possible to be so captivated by them, that you can actually feel as if you have literally stepped into the picture you are viewing. The art form, and great skill that is involved in the world of photography, has the ability to take us to many places. There are many people who say this same thing from reading a good book. There are many world-renowned photographers whose work is included in many popular books of today

There is a very wide spectrum of creative choices that you can explore when it comes to learning one of the many different areas of specialty that is offered in the world of photography. If you are contemplating the idea of going to photography school to enhance your skill and knowledge, you may choose to specialize in one of many different areas of expertise that is offered in photography. These would include weddings, nature, sports, weather, underwater, macro photography, urban photography, and a number of others.

Some people may not be aware, but there is a lot more that goes into the skill and art of photography than simply aiming a camera and clicking a button. For example, an underwater photographer must also be highly skilled in swimming, scuba diving, as well as have a vast storehouse of knowledge in the specialized equipment that is required for this type of photography.

For any photo’’s that need to be taken in the dental, or other type of medical field, this is also a specialized area of photography that would require a tremendous amount of knowledge. Tthe use of the specialized equipment that is involved in these types of photographs.

Professional photographers that have an area of expertise that includes creative photographs taken of various types of animals would also generally require that the photographer had at least a basic knowledge of the types of animals that they were working with. To be successful in being able to take those once in a lifetime shots that many photographers only wish they could capture, you would want to educate yourself on some of the habits of the animals that you plan to be around.

At first thought, many people generally do not think there is very much involved in the field of photography. This statement however, could not be any further from the truth. It takes a large amount of dedicated practice and the utmost in skill to be able to acquire the expertise that is needed to become a successful photographer.

It could easily be argued that wood antiques are by far most popular and also one of the most expensive ones. There are many connoisseurs of wood antiques and the exorbitant rates do little to deter them from possessing one. Here we shed some light on the priceless wood antiques

Wood Antiques Add Charm

Wood antiques give a very attractive vintage look to your entire surrounding. It is also a creative method to make your house look unique. Wood antiques are made of several types of wood with a lot of detailed carvings, intricate designs, patterns and inlays which may also be hand painted. Some of them are simple with a table top and legs for support while some have an apron, a drawer or side cabinets, extra shelves and a single base instead of the four legs. Having wood antiques creates a totally different ambience.

Caring for Your Wood Antiques

The care and maintenance of your wood antique is very important to help them retain their beauty. Some furniture wood antiques are large and heavy and maintenance is equally difficult. You should ensure that your furniture is not stored in damp places as it tends to warp the wood and neither should it be stored in extremely dry conditions as this tightens the wood. When you move your furniture make sure to cover them and ensure proper padding. All drawers should be removed and use gloves when handling these wood antiques.

Do not expose your furniture to direct sunlight as it can affect the colour and finish of the wood. Artificial light can also cause damage to your wood. If you have intentions of storing it in the garage or the basement ensure that they are water proof and kept at room temperature. Always use a soft cloth to wipe your furniture as feather dusters can cause scratches and for intricate designs use a small and soft brush. Use of beeswax polish once or twice a year helps to keep your wood antiques in good condition and avoid silicone based products as it tends to collect dust and dirt which may make your furniture dull. Experts state that wood antiques are best left with scratches as the original state has more value.

Antique Wood Flooring

There is a great demand for antique wood flooring as they are unusually exquisite and add value to the building. Real antique wood floors have cracks, nails and holes but they can be repaired and polished while retaining the original color and beauty. You can get antique wood flooring from old buildings that are being demolished, old factories, warehouses and cotton mills and have them custom made into various sized panels for your floor, stairs, mantels and doors. You can also find many antique wood flooring manufacturers on the internet.

An article on the greeting card industry and the rising popularity of hand crafted cards.

By Shaun Parker

They say there is a card for every occasion, and those occasions are increasing. Taking a walk into any major card retail shop reveals the magnitude of events to celebrate and goals to mark. Birthdays, Christmas, Easter, wedding, sympathy, get well soon and congratulations are the main stay, but these paper tokens are becoming ever more specialized. It can be a hard job to find a card for a friend that just reads happy birthday; it’’s more likely to read ‘’happy birthday to my best friend’’s cousin and her hamster'’

That is assuming it is a birthday you are trying to buy for. There is every chance you'’ll have to wade through a forest of cards to find one that congratulates a graduation, praises passing a driving test, applauds achieving a bronze medal at the school sports day or wishing a big bag of well done on learning to skydive dressed as a fairy! There is probably even a card to send someone who sent you a great card. The greetings card industry must be booming; my wallet is becoming empty. It is estimated that the average Joe sends 55 cards a year. Surely that doesn'’t include Christmas. I estimate that to be about 150 quid a year out of my bank account and into the recycling bin.

The trouble with so many cards for so many occasions is that the gift of giving one becomes relatively meaningless; a paper parade of popularity and rarely tokens to treasure. An injection of personality and giving something personal is needed to overcome such apathy. It’’s time to take matters into ones own hands. It’’s time to tool up with pritt stick and glitter glue, finger paints and stickers. It’’s time to customise some cards. The home made card industry is booming. Dedicated followers can subscribe to specialist magazines to learn the nuances of this papery talent.

There is a huge variety of card making supplies on the market. Embossed papers and cards, decals and customised stamps fill the shelves of craft shops. Feathers, bows, and sticky backed gems adorn the trinket racks in art supply departments. It is a world where you get to experiment and be a kid again, bringing back memories of never ending glitter showers and sequins. This homestead hobby can even turn out to be a bit of a money maker. In an avoidance of generic ten a penny cards, specialist card shops stock homemade delights by crafty types using anything from etched foil to jelly babies.

In fact, handmade cards are doing a great trade online, as are all the suppliers to the card makers. With such a wealth of materials available, to stock every variety would take a warehouse longer than the channel tunnel and require a jet pack to reach the top shelf. Card making supplies encompass the usual stationary items of cards and envelopes, but it makes a change to be able to experiment with colour and texture and escape the drudgery of the manila gummed envelope.

Making your own greeting cards means giving a friend a piece of yourself, it becomes a gift. It is an artwork. The endearing quality of a hand crafted card touches on the same emotion that means there is a box in the loft with all your childhood paintings in. There has been thought, love and consideration imbibed in the fabrication of the papery token. It is no longer a throwaway gesture that gets thrown away; it is a token gesture that has the potential to be treasured.

A discussion between collecting and collectibles in the house hold for everyday people sp people can treasure their kept possessions

By Victor Epand

I have been to so many homes where entire rooms were dedicated to items these individuals had collected. Beanie Babies, figurines, spoons, hats, etc all displayed so pretty in glass case that ultimately won'’t ever amount to anything other than memories. There is a huge difference in collecting and collectibles so before you go out and buy that newest addition to that beanie baby collection, you might want to reconsider.

Collectibles are items that are very hard to come by for reasons such as limited numbers were produced and sold or perhaps they are items that are one of a kind that were never sold. Collections are made by purchasing the next edition to that collection, such as the beanie baby craze.

Millions were produced and then production ended and they moved on to the next edition. This is where you can make your collection even more valuable; by finding the collectables that no one has. Granted, there were probably hundreds of Babe Ruth trading cards at one time, but because that was an era that had no idea of what they had, a vast quantity of those cards ended up in the spokes of hundreds of bicycles across America. Back then we bought the gum and got the cards as a bonus; we paid no attention to their future value. Now, they don'’t even sell the gum; just the cards.

Autographs from Famous or even infamous people are true collectible. Even in the early stages of the fame, they will only increase in value. Just as most artists never become famous until they are dead, so goes the autographs of famous people. Always protect your collectible autograph by sealing it and storing it in a safe, dry place, preferably in a safe or deposit box. Sunlight fades the ink and the value decreases.

My picks for the best collectibles are: Trading cards, Old bottles, Indian artifacts , Signed works of art (living or dead) , Personally signed pictures of the famous, Hand crafted furniture, Hand crafted pocket knives, Vinyl LP records (45′’s), Vintage Barbie Dolls or even GI Joe Dolls, Tins dating back 100 years or more, Certain valuable coins. These house hold collectable items have shown themselves to be the most popular at giving a significant return on investment. They are collectibles that everyone wants to have but only a few can actually have.

Anything that has been hand crafted that dates back 50 years is something to hold on to. To some, it might be junk. To others, with an eye for detail, such items are priceless and hold great value. Collectibles aren'’t always easy to define and harder still to distinguish between the real thing and replicas. You must be educated before you start hunting. There are many excellent books dedicated to informing people as to what to look for and how to spot a fake. My advice to you is this; if you don'’t know, find somebody who does before you sell it, buy it, or throw it away.

Would you like to add a bit of flair to your model train but are not quite sure how to do it? A train bridge can be the perfect touch.

By Victor Epand

One way to add a good deal of character to your model train layout is through the addition of a train bridge. This is an excellent way to showcase your skill as well. The materials that they can be made from varies greatly and mainly just depends on how much weight they will be carrying. By building a bridge you open up the chance to add more features to your layout including ponds, rivers, and more.

Once you have built your first few bridges you will then be ready to tackle some larger projects as well. To start your bridge you will first have to figure out how wide and and how long you will need to make it. Now that you know this you will be able to begin. You will start by building a base for the tracks themselves. This base should be strong enough to support the trains and the landscape. This means the bigger the train the stronger the wood that will be needed. 2×4′’s are normally the wood of choice for projects such as this.

Build your basic box and cover it with plywood. You then will have to create your arches. To do this you need to decide exactly what size you will want and how many of them you will be using. Much of this depends on if you will have a train that will pass through the arches as well. Place your arches along your structure making sure to place them evenly throughout. Next you will need two sections of foam core.

Trace the pattern that you want onto the top sheet of foam and cut it out. It is easiest if you cut both pieces at the same time and helps to make sure that they are cut out evenly. After you have gotten them cut out you can then glue them to the track bed. You will want to give the glue plenty of time to dry. You can then turn the bed upside down so that you can easily get to the bottom of the train bridge if you need to.

Supports will now need to be installed between each of the arches in order to provide strength to the bridge itself. Pieces of foam will work perfectly as long as they are cut to fit snugly. After you have made sure that they fit level across the bottom of the viaduct you will be ready to glue them carefully into place. You can now decorate the outside of your new project.

You can cover your train bridge with whatever decorations you would like to add. You can print out brick shaped designs and paint them as bricks or you can just paint straight onto the foam. Another option is to mix up a bit of brick mortar and use a stencil to get a real brick look. Stick the stencil into place and apply the mortar mix after water has been added. Use your imagination and paint your new model train bridge any way you choose.

Do you love model trains but just don''t have the room to have a full size layout? A compact model train layout may be just what you need.

By Victor Epand

If you love model trains but you are limited on space you will have to consider trying something a bit different. Why not build a compact model train layout? A compact layout will allow you to still enjoy the model trains you love so much while not taking up too much space. The first thing you will need to figure out exactly how much space you will have to dedicate to your layout. If it is going under a bed or any place similar you should consider keeping it within a 4×6 area. This will still give you a layout you can enjoy while keeping it from within reason.

If you are looking for a scale that is easy to handle for young children then you should choose HO scale. It will keep it at a manageable size without getting too large. If you are looking for one for yourself then the N scale trains have a track that usually runs about 9mm apart and cars that are about 3 to 5 inches in length. The first thing you will need will be your board for the train to be mounted to. A piece of plywood that is 1/2 inch thick and cut to your necessary dimensions will do perfectly. You will also need a sheet of Styrofoam that is 2 inches thick and the same dimensions as well.

When these are glued together you will then have a solid base for your train that at the same time will be protecting your carpet with the foam. You will now need to sketch your train layout onto the plywood and see how it is going to fit. Make sure that you are adding enough parts such like switches and interconnecting loops. Once you have it all laid out you will be ready to prepare your rail bed materials. You can glue these into place with white glue.

If you will use road bed material made out of cork board will help to keep your train much more quiet. It can be a lot of work to do, but it is not really essential so if you do want to skip this step then you will not be losing anything important. You can now begin to attach your rail components. You should use small nails to do this. Make sure that you are using insulated track connectors to keep track sections that have switched polarity separated.

Your next step will be to attach the wires to their correct places. You will need to drill all the necessary holes through the base and you can then begin to attach all their components in the correct places. Once you have all these installed in the right places then you are ready to attach your power supply and try it out. If everything is working right then you have installed it all properly and you are finished. Your train should still be light enough to handle yet large enough to be able to enjoy. Have fun!

When giving model trucks as a gift there are a few things to consider. No mattere what age the builder, there is a model for almosy everyone.

By Victor Epand

There are so many different types of model trucks available today. You can buy them with as many or as little working parts as you choose. You can also choose how easy or how difficult you would like them to be to assemble.

So, how do you pick which one it is you want to start with? To do this you must first decide if the model is for you or for someone else. If this model is for yourself then it is pretty easy to choose one. You must simply know what your skill level currently is. If you are just starting out in building models then you may want to choose an easy one to begin with. One that may suit your skill level would be a snap together model.

Snap together models often come prepainted and just require assembly. They obviously do not require glue which can also mean that these type models can make a good choice for younger model makers as well. There may be a small need for some sort of cutting utensil to cut any flashing that is left on the parts after pulling them from the sprue. Flashing is excess material that is left behind in the manufacturing process.

You may not even need this cutting tool as usually you can do the same thing with a bit of sandpaper. If you do use it just make sure that you do not remove too much of the material. It is always easier to remove than it is to build it back up.

It may be that you are looking for a bit more of a challenge. If you are then you should consider another type of plastic model. There are other plastic models available. It is just a matter of finding the one for you. The plastic models that require gluing come in several skill levels as well. The ones that are the most challenging can actually have tiny little working parts that can require a lot of attention to detail.

Models may also need painting. This can be accomplished by either hand painting them or by using an airbrushing kit. Both manners of painting offer their own benefits as well as their own drawbacks. Hand painting can allow closer attention to detail but airbrushing can allow you to create a more uniform coating.

If you do choose to give a model as a gift then you should take the age of the person into account. While you would expect an adult to be able to work safely with a hobby knife you would certainly not give one to an adolescent to use. Some may be able to do so with some level of supervision but this may not be acceptable for all.

Another consideration is the size of parts in the model when compared to the model builder’’s age. Young model builders might be likely to put small pieces in their mouth. Many of the boxes that the model trucks come in have a recommended age or skill level printed right on the box. This can help you to make your decision as well.

If you do not decide to give a plastic model then you might want to give a wooden one. There are wooden models that do not require any tools. They may also come in big pieces so that they are easy for little hands. This should make your decision so much easier in the long run.

Whether you are buying the model truck for yourself of for someone else you will still be able to find one out there that can suit your purposes. When you go to buy the model just make sure that you know the recipient’’s age and relative skill level. This will make your selection process so much easier.

Boat models can be used for many purposes. As such, some businesses have specialized in the production as well as reparation of boat models such as Raven Arts. There, not only ship models are made but submarines and showcases also. Such business offer to their clients ship models of any size and shape and above all that, they produce any model that you may want as they are quite experienced in that field.

Indeed, pleasure crafts, tall ships, tugboats, warships, battleships and clipper ships amongst many others are made. Photographs are also displayed to give an idea about the models and enhance advertising.
Materials needed for the construction of such ships are good quality wood such as fine exotic woods, glass and metals for the various parts of the ship.

Moreover, in order to lay more emphasis on the beauty of the ship model, the specialized businesses also manufacture showcases so that the model does not get damaged also. Such arrangements are fit to be displayed in museums. As for reparation, it is important to provide such a service as ship models have many small parts which would require experienced hands to repair them.

Ship models can have many functions. Firstly, if someone wants to have a real ship built, it is better for him to get an idea about how it will look like before making such a costly investment. Obviously, the ship model will be made according to his needs and preferences. Then, he is sure to be satisfied with the actual ship after judging the quality and viability of the model.

Secondly, ship models are generally highly-demanded pieces of art. In fact, art is a way to express oneself. Through those ships, aesthetic and creativity are clearly showed. Those artists have to pay attention to minute details with utmost care. To develop such a talent is not something obvious. It is only through arduous practice that one can produce a perfect ship model. Such works are often displayed in art galleries or exposed in museums. Those who collect art works may display them at their residence as decoration.

Moreover, it is to be noted that demand for such products has job-creating effects. Undeniably, labor will be needed to produce the ships, to manufacture the cases and to sell them amongst many other jobs. This is good especially for those who do not have brilliant academic qualifications. They can learn that craft and develop their talent, as such earning a living decently.

Next, such an art promotes tourism in the case of souvenir shops etc.

Also, it is noteworthy to stress that ship models can be used to teach and learn history. For example, naval battles where warships sailed to fight and other types of ancient boats people used to discover new land in ancient times.

10 simple and easy things you can do today to get better landscape digital photos.

By Matt Chang

This is the time of the year for Summer trips and vacations. Can you see all the people at all the tourist land marks with their digital cameras? We are also moving into the fall season, and soon, we will be seeing the changing of the leaves. The thing is, how many of you wished you could take some great landscape pictures with your digital camera? Wouldn'’t it be just awesome to be able to have some nice pics to put on your desktop screen saver, or your wall?

For all of you aspiring photographers out there, here are 10 tips you can put to use right now to capture that beautiful picture.

1. The first thing to get into your head is that photography is all about light. The more you know about how light affects your photos, the better you will get. Try taking pictures of the same area one day, but take the pictures at different times of the day. You'’d be surprised at how drastic the same picture looks with different lighting. There is no substitute for practical experience and there is no excuse with a digital camera not to practice and throw away the shots you don'’t want.

2. Take your pictures during the magic hours. Many professional photographers like to take most of their landscapes photos a few hours after sunrise or before sunset to get the best lighting affects. The reason for this is that the lighting is not coming from directly above. The way and angle of the sun coming up or going down over the horizon gives rich pictures.

3. Use high definition photography (HDR) or pseudo HDR to bring out the background and make your pictures dramatic. If you are not acquainted with the term HDR - basically it involves taking 3 shots of the scene with your camera mounted on a tripod. One shot is over exposed by one stop and one shot is underexposed by one stop and the final shot is at the correct exposure. The photographs are merged using HDR software to give a broader tonal range resulting in more dramatic pictures. What you end up doing is blending the average of the camera lens aperture.

4. Experiment with your camera - Take picutures of the same subject in the same lighting but keep adjusting your setting on the camera. You will start to understand what each setting will do. And, then, you will know which setting to go to when you want to achieve a particular effect.

5. Frame the focal point. Alternatively use a path, fence or wall to lead the eye to the focal point. You can get some really dramatic results that way. Think of hte fense at the sand dunes, or a long row of wild flowers leading up the hills.

6. When taking pictures at dawn or dusk try using the slow sync flash mode on your digital camera to highlight the area close to you. This is particularly useful when you want to use an object like a tree branch to frame the scene. The burst of light that is thrown off can create dramatic effects.

7. Try taking your pictures using the rule of two thirds - try it with the sky and horizon in the top third, then try it with the sky and horizon in the top two thirds of the picture. You never really want to have a picture cut down the center. The asymmetry is what looks good in the picture. As you experiment, you will find what works best for you in which situation.

8. Try using a tripod especially in low light conditions and if you don'’t possess a shutter release cable set your camera’’s 2 second timer to on, to avoid any camera shake. If your camera has image stabilisation you should set this to off when you use your tripod. Do not over estimate your ability to stay still while taking a shot. We are always moving, and even our pulse can make the difference when you have the lens open for a long time. If you are serious about taking pictures, you should invest in the tripod, you can get a cheap one for less than $25.

9. Consider about using a graduated filter to emphasise the sky. Graduated grey filters are fairly cheap and they can often help avoid that overblown sky. If you are using a point and shoot camera, you may not have this setting, but don'’t worry, your camera will ususally have a setting similarly that you can use. Check the owners manual.

10. Once you'’ve take all your pictures the fun processing them begins. It’’s worthwhile getting to grips with photo editing software such as Photoshop. If you don'’t want to buy photo editing software you can always download Gimp which has many of Photoshop’’s features. The only challenge is that Gimp can be difficult to learn how to use. For a more simpler version of photo editing software, you can try Picasa by Google. Both Gimp and Picasa are free to download and use.

So that’’s it. 10 easy things you can do today to get better pictures. Here’’s a bonus tip. Just get out there and take pictures like crazy and experiment. Since most cameras today are digital, you don'’t have that recurring expense in film. The more pictures you take, the more you will be able to adjust and then sooner than later, you'’ll have great landscape photos.

It is really easy to build your own model train parts from plastic if you want to. It can help to add a personlized touch to any display.

By Victor Epand

Building your own model train sets can be very fun and exciting. It is a great way to show off your skill as well. You can build all kinds of features and these can each be challenging in their own way. One of the ways to build parts is to craft them from plastic. Once such sort of structure that can built from plastic is buildings. If you are just to cut the pieces out with a knife, glue them together and paint them then you can end up with an okay looking building that will probably suit your purposes.

While this may do for some quick projects there can be much better ones produced with the right tools and preparation. Part of the preparation includes gathering the tools that you will need before hand. One of these tools will be a sharp hobby knife. You will also need some side cutting pliers, some tweezers, files, scissors, and some 100 grit sandpaper. You will need to make sure that you have prepared all the pieces before hand.

The first thing you will do is to break loose all the parts you will need for the process loose from the sprue and make sure that you cut all the flashing off as well. You will next need to verify that the sides will all fit rather snugly. If there are going to be any gaps you will be able to fill these with a bit of extra adhesive later. Next you will want to check and see if there are any dimples in the plastic. If there are any then you should fill them in with either a bit of extra adhesive or green fill putty and then sand it down to fit.

Once you have all the the pieces ready you can then begin to fit them together begin by taping a side to the roof and gluing the edge together with a liquid styrene. You can then fold the two over and then tape on the next piece and repeat the process again. Make sure that you check to see how they will fit before you allow the styrene to set.

After the four walls and the roof are attached you will be ready to begin attaching any trim work, doors, and etc. You will then be ready to begin the priming and painting of your new plastic building. For most of the buildings primer is suggested due to the nature of the plastics. This will ensure that the paint sticks as it should so you will not be going back and trying to reglue parts that come loose. Now you have a complete plastic building.

After you have built several model houses this way you will be quite experienced and able to make a whole bunch of different ones. From houses to clock towers and from grain bins to train stations you can create an entire town from plastic that will greatly compliment your new model train display.

Deciding to buy your first model train set is a choice that can be rewarding. Considering your options and desires will give you a path to take.

By Victor Epand

Have you been thinking about buying a model train set for yourself or for someone else close to you? If you have never bought a model train set before there are some things that you should know. Do you know the difference between HO scale and N scale? What about the benefits of using plaster for creating your landscaping rather than using paper mache? If none of these sound familiar to you then you should definitely do a little bit of research before you ever buy your first train set.

The first place to begin is with scale. The size of a model train in comparison to the actual train it is modeled after is known as the scale. This comparison is usually represented by letters when it is reference to the model train industry. Some examples include N scale which means that it is built on a 1:160 scale, HO which is a 1:87 scale and O scale which is a 1:48 scale. This scale will play a large part in exactly which model train set it is that you are going to buy.

Another consideration comes in when you think about the age of the person that will be receiving the set as a gift. This can also have a huge bearing on the train that you will end up buying since you would really not want to get one that is too complicated for a youngster to run. That also goes for the opposite. You would not want to insult an adult by getting them a train made for a seven year old.

Now that you know what scale you will be needing you can start looking for one to fit the space that will be allocated to it. You do not want to buy some great big layout that would take up most of a room if it is going into a space that is 10×20. It wouldn'’t do either to buy a set that was so small it would get lost in the middle of its display table.

Now you must decide whether you or the recipient of the new model train will be building their own display table. This can make a huge difference in the cost of the gift. If you decide to include a case for your own then you have to make some weight considerations. If you are going to be placing a heavy model on it you certainly would not want it to be made of press board or some other such cheap material. It would fall through in no time.

If you are choosing to buy the parts of your set individually you will want to take rough measurements of the area that will be getting track laid on it. This will allow you to buy the proper number of track pieces. Also make sure that you have gotten as many of the curves as you will need to complete the project. Buying a model train set for the first time can be an adventure in and of itself. Enjoy the adventure and who knows it may be the start of a life long hobby.

Shopping for figurines is simple, but you need to plan. This article discusses how to approach buying figurines as a gift, for yourself, or starting a collection.

By Victor Epand

If you are interested in buying figurines as a gift, for yourself, or starting a figurine collection, there are a few things that you should consider. There are so many different types of figurines available, and you will want to make the right choice for your money. If you follow these few simple tips, you will be pleased with the figurines that you purchase.

A Figurine as a Gift

If the figurine is for someone else, make sure that you know what they like. You may have a place in mind, such as Mom’’s desk, or Auntie’’s fireplace. If they already have some figurines, make sure that you don'’t get one that they already have. It is a good idea to stay within whatever theme they already have, or get similar yet unique figurines that will look nice with what they have.

A Figurine for Yourself

If the figurine is for you, consider what you are getting it for. Where will you put it? Will you be able to keep it in a place where it won'’t get knocked over? Do the figurines you are looking match the colors and themes of the room you will display it in? Think about it, because you don'’t want to buy a figurine that you will just keep in a box.

Starting a collection

If the space allows, and you want a collection to display on shelves or throughout your home, you can start one. What material will they be made of? Crystal figurines are lovely and elegant, yet expensive. Porcelain is also very nice, but not quite as costly. Will your figurine collection reflect your love for animals, or a certain animal in particular? Will your figurine collection reflect your faith and religious beliefs? Your figurine collection can say anything about you that you want it to. Consider what you want to express.

Whatever reason you may be shopping for figurines, remember to stick to a budget. There are many figurines available at low cost online or in discount stores. If you set a budget for your figurine purchase before you begin, it will be much easier for you to stay within your limits. You may even want to browse online to find out what price range you should plan for.

Take your time and shop around for just the right ones. If you are patient, you will find the figurine (or figurines) that you are looking for.

Purchasing foreign model trucks can give a new prespective to your hobby. Assembling the model truck from instructins written in another language can be tricky.

By Victor Epand

Have you ever been cruising the Internet and saw an awesome looking model truck from another country and thought to yourself, “I gotta have it!” So you order the truck, wait the advised two weeks or so for it to arrive and opened it up just to find that all the instructions are written in German, French, or some other such foreign language? Never fear, with a bit of intestinal fortitude and some ingenuity you can soon have your new model truck assembled and looking as great as it did in the Internet pictures.

The first thing you must do is to figure out a way around the language barrier. There are many companies today that actually produce their models with multinational marketing in mind. In this vein they often include multilingual instructions in th
