For most of us the problem with change is it requires us to change too. That problem may never change.

By Knight Pierce Hirst

In 1845 Congress decided Tuesday would be the most convenient day of the week for Americans to vote and it hasn'’t changed. Of course, in 1845 we were an agrarian society that traveled by horse and buggy. Farmers needed a day to get to the county seat, a day to vote and a day to get home - without interfering with Friday, Saturday and Sunday, which were days of worship. As Wednesday was market day, only Tuesday was left. In spite of non-voters saying they'’re too busy to vote during the week, we still vote on Tuesday. Because we'’ve changed Columbus Day, Presidents'’ Day and Martin Luther King, Jr.’’s Day for the convenience of shoppers, maybe changing the day we vote should be … put to a vote.

For decades the Nielson Company has estimated how many people are watching TV and advertisers have paid for airtime based on those estimates - but things have changed. Now that many households have a choice of 300 channels, Nielson’’s monitoring 12,000 households seems somewhat inadequate - especially when there’’s something better - the cable box. The cable box knows what every cable watcher watches. When you combine that information with what the supermarket computer knows when we use our club cards, you have what advertisers want to know - payoff on return of investment. You also know why Nielson may soon not rate in TV ratings.

For years runway models have been 6 feet tall, dangerously thin and very young. Now the call has gone out for “classic” models - models 40 and older. Why the change? Because women in the workforce - women with buying power - want to see themselves reflected on runways, in ads and in catalogs. In fact, a joint study done by Western Michigan University and Ohio State University found that older models are considered more credible by both older and younger customers. Maybe even the fashion industry can change. Maybe it’’s finally old enough to know better.

There have also been changes at the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security. Their employees have been asked to stop using Islamic references when condemning terrorist attacks. Because the government has linked the word “jihadist” with “Islamic extremist”, very few Americans know that jihad is a positive word in the Islamic world. It’’s an internal struggle to be a better person. Not using Islamic references to condemn terrorist attacks could be jihad for government employees.

In the past children who were born left-handed were made to conform to a right-handed world. Today the world is more left-handed.

By Knight Pierce Hirst

It’’s not easy to be left-handed in a right-handed world. Things like shaking hands or being helped to put on a coat can be awkward. To make their lives easier lefthanders deserve innovations like notepads that tear from the right, doors that open from the right and toilets that flush on the right. They deserve August 13th to be celebrated as Lefthanders Day. We need to give lefties a hug - remembering, of course, that hugs can be awkward too. We need to remember that for left-handed people things will never be all right.

Yes, things like can openers, scissors and stick shifts can be hard for left-handed people to use; but maybe that makes them more determined people. Maybe that’’s why five of the last seven presidents have been lefties. Then again, maybe it’’s because a different type of creativity is linked to left-handedness. Left-handers supposedly use more symbolism and visual imagery when they speak, which supposedly makes them more inspiring speakers. Unfortunately, that theory can'’t be tested in the 2008 presidential election because both John McCain and Barack Obama are left-handed.

Something that is fact and not theory is that southpaws have an advantage in sports when they play against right-handers. Only 10% of the population are lefties, but 25% of baseball players are and this included Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Tony Gwynn and Barry Bonds. In basketball lefties like Bill Russell can block righties'’ shots. In tennis the ball spins differently off a left-hander’’s racket. Rod Laver, John McEnroe. Jimmy Connors, Martina Navratilova and Roger Nadal are all left-handed. Obviously when it comes to sports, left-handers don'’t have to feel left - out.

Now snails don'’t have to feel left out. Snails are considered left-handed if their shell curves to the left. When a Yale University biologist studied 2,000 snail fossils, he discovered that right-handed shells had many more scars on them. From that he deduced that righties were attacked more by crabs. When the biologist put both types of snails in an aquarium, he discovered that crabs, because their right claws are larger than their left claws, have a harder time picking up southpaw snails. The crabs would get frustrated and try to pick up a different snail. Although this experiment proved that left-handed snails have a survival advantage, it raised another question. If lefties are better able to survive, why aren'’t there more of them?

Although we don''t know what the future will bring, we do know it will help us get past the past.

By Knight Pierce Hirst

Although Pythagoras and other early mathematicians believed in numerology, it’’s now considered an occult art in which numbers supposedly reflect personal characteristics. Only numbers 1-9, plus 11 and 22 are used. All numbers are reduced to those numbers by adding their components. For example, 24 would be 2+4 or 6. The numbers in my birth date reduce to 8, which makes 8 my life path. According to numerology that means I have executive ability, I'’m materialistic and I'’m unscrupulous. Obviously, there must be something wrong with a system that makes it impossible to be a 10.

Some 26 centuries later when the automatic answering machine was invented, it was a 3-foot-tall machine. Back in 1935 the answering machine was primarily used by Orthodox Jews whose religious beliefs prevent them from answering the phone on the Sabbath. Today the answering machine is almost a necessity of life, but not all futuristic ideas make it to the future.

Many of Q’’s futuristic ideas for James Bond didn'’t make it to the future. The character Q was based on Charles Fraser Smith, an engineer who worked for the British government designing special tools for British agents to use in WWII. Now the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has its own Q. Rolf Dietrich’’s official title is Deputy Director of Research and one of his futuristic ideas is implanting tiny monitors in cell phones to detect biological weapons. This idea would provide thousands of monitors in places like airports, subways and sports arenas. Because our spy program has already given us things like baby monitors and text messaging, maybe cell phone monitors will be a part of our future. Maybe a smoke detector that doesn'’t go off when I use my indoor grill will be a part of my future.

The space program has given us things too - like Teflon and Velcro, but what the men aboard the space station recently wanted was a toilet that flushed. After two weeks of having to manually flush the Russian-made toilet, a new pump was sent on the space shuttle. I can'’t relate to the arduous training required to be an astronaut. I can'’t relate to leaving the earth’’s gravity or dealing with weightlessness in space. However, not being able get a toilet fixed for two weeks has made the space program seem less futuristic to me. In fact, it’’s brought the space program down to earth.

Fake university degrees are a hot item online. Before you order one, you want to be sure it is for the right reasons. In this article, we explore three possible uses for one.

By Stewart Baker

Novelty diplomas have been around for years. People have bought it for various reasons. It is important, however, to draw the distinction and realize that fake diplomas and fake transcripts are not meant to be used as a substitute for a real education and certainly not to be used to apply for a job.

College degrees are the most highly sought after fakes due to the increased economic leverage it offers. If you are thinking of using a fake diploma to apply for a good job, you might want to think twice. Nowadays, many companies require a university degree of some sort in order to apply for a job. Fake diplomas are not a viable alternative to attending school if you are looking for higher pay. They now verify that you actually graduated from the university on your application.

Here are three great ways you can use a fake degree:

They can be used to play a prank or trick your friends or family into thinking you actually got that degree. Novelty diplomas and degrees can be a great deal of fun if they are used as they are intended. You don'’t have to spend thousands of dollars in terms of admission or tuition fees, nor you have to attend classes. For example: You may be a very good auto mechanic and want something to make you feel good about what your natural life skill. A fake certificate might do that for you.

You can replace the real diploma that you lost. We'’re human and misplacing that degree you earned from your university can be difficult and costly. That’’s where a fake university diploma helps. You can obtain a new one via one of the many reputable diploma replacement services.

Lastly, you can use a fake degree for self-affirmation purposes. You may be going through a very challenging degree program at your university. When things get tough, it might be easy just to give up. By sticking a replica degree in front of your study table, it can be a big driving force in getting you over those tough times by reminding you daily of what you are working towards as a goal. It is tangible: something you can feel and see everyday.

Before you go out to order one though, take note. Due to the popularity of such a service, many diploma replacement companies have sprung up over the years. Be careful about the various diploma mills out there though. Some promise something completely different from what they actually deliver. Some are very low quality and will not even look anywhere near authentic.
There’’s been a lot of negative publicity circulating the Internet concerning diploma mills. It is unfortunate that there are companies out there that actually try and take advantage of good hard working people by suggesting these are diplomas that can be used in a job application. Some of these diploma mills even obtain phony credentials in an effort to pass themselves off as a real school or university but in actual fact their life experience degrees are worthless. They employ words in their materials denoting a legal status such as “licensed”, “state authorized”, or “state-approved” to suggest an equivalence to accreditation. Many of these “indicators of authenticity” have nothing to do with to academic credentials.

Fake diplomas, on the other hand, usually do not fall into this category. Instead, they are novelty items that happen to appear like the real thing. They are perfectly legal if not used for the wrong reasons. A simple analogy is comparing novelty money or million dollar bills. It is perfectly legal to make, obtain and play pranks on people with novelty money but as soon as you try and use them as real money you run into trouble with the law.

Make sure to deal with an established diploma maker who can provide you fake college transcripts and fake diplomas from accredited universities.

There are many companies online that provide access to this service. Now, you can proudly exhibit that fake PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois. Or what about having an exact replica or fake transcript proclaiming your recent graduation from Harvard’’s School of Business? These are all examples of phony diplomas you can enjoy and proudly display in your room.

Shopping online for fake diplomas not only gives you the opportunity to choose between lots of different vendors from the comfort of your home, but it also gives you the added bonus of anonymity. No one, other than the company you ordered from, will ever know you own a fake diploma.

Has pain management become big business in the U.S. because we have more pain or because we are tolerating it less?

By Knight Pierce Hirst

There are two kinds of physical pain. The acute kind goes away as the body heals itself. The chronic kind lasts at least six months after the healing process is completed. Although there are both over-the-counter and prescription medications for acute pain, the treatment of the chronic kind usually includes therapy, as well as medication. Physical therapy, such as stretching and strengthening, can reduce discomfort. So can low-impact exercise, such as walking and swimming. Behavioral therapy, such as meditation and yoga, can help patients relax and decrease their stress. Lifestyle changes help too. The most important lifestyle change in this regard is to stop smoking. Not only can nicotine interfere with medications, but people who smoke experience more pain than people who don'’t. Smokers also cause more pain - in the necks of non-smokers.

Until the 1980′’s scientists thought that itching was a very mild form of pain and that it was transmitted along pain receptors. Wrong. Although itching can be traced to something in the skin, itching can also be caused by things like jaundice or brain tumors. Even the word itch can make us scratch because it has a strong suggestive power. An ant crawling on the inside of our thigh or a feather lightly touching the inside of our forearm - I think these examples of the word’’s suggestive power are up to scratch.

Thankfully, researchers at Stanford University have come up with ways for us to think away our pain. One way is to shift attention from the painful area of our body to a part of the body farthest from that area. Another way is to re-calibrate the level of discomfort - instead of thinking of it as severe or dehabilitating, we should think of it as harmless or weak. The suggestion I like best is to visualize healing processes at work on the painful area of our body. I'’m going to visualize Pierce Brosnan.

Not all pain, however, is physical. There’’s also the emotional kind and there is one kind of emotional pain where numbers can speak for themselves. The number of American adults who experience chronic pain is 86 million. The number of American married couples in 2005 was 57,957,000. The divorce rate in 2005 was the lowest it has been since 1970. From these numbers I think it’’s safe to conclude that many of the 86 million American sufferers are learning to live with pain.

The decline in the value of the dollar means a decline in purchasing power, which means it takes more dollars to buy what we need. This means we need creative financial planning.

By Knight Pierce Hirst

As a child my financial planning consisted of a piggy bank and a grandmother who told me a penny saved is a penny earned. Coinstar, the maker of coin-counting machines, estimates 65% of Americans save pennies. This translates into $7.7 billion of pennies. When the economy is good, more pennies are saved. When the economy slows down, pennies come back into circulation. The Gross Domestic Income exactly parallels the minting of pennies - but I guess that makes common cents.

Two Tennessee farmers used common sense to fight the high cost of gas. They parked their tractor and hitched their farm equipment to their mules Dolly and Molly, who are a lot cheaper to fuel. The mules required some training and the weight of the equipment had to be shifted so each mule pulled equally, but T.R. and Danny Raymond are saving more than $60 a day. Unfortunately, the vast majority of us don'’t have mules - which explains the financial mess our country is in. We voted our mules into office.

Meanwhile, brothel owners are trying to get more customers into their businesses. In June when fuel prices hit an all time high in Nevada, brothel owners had a 20-45% drop in revenue. Truckers, who provide steady business to many of the state’’s twenty-eight brothels, are having to pay 40% more for diesel than a year ago. To stimulate business one resourceful brothel owner is giving its best customers a $50 gas card. Obviously, not having work for the ladies isn'’t a problem to be taken lying down.

Then there’’s the man in Wankesha, Wisconsin. He had a unique financial plan for eating out. Just before being given the bill for his meal, Robert Farnam pretended to have a heart attack. Before the restaurant management could rush to judgment, he was rushed to the hospital. This plan worked well until he was recognized by one of the doctors. Now Farnam will go to trial - which could be a win/win situation. If he pays for his crimes by going to jail, he'’ll be getting his meals for free.

Southwest Airlines'’ financial planning includes fuel hedging. The airline bought fuel years in advance, gambling the price would go up. As a result, Southwest’’s second quarter earnings were $321 million and the value of its stock went up 44 cents. At a time when businesses are having record loses, 44 cents isn'’t peanuts.

New legislation that affects the adult industry in Texas.

By Justina Mathews

Mark your calendars, friends. Texas just got toy-friendly! That is right. On Valentines Day (how apropos), the news hit the stands and websites. Everyone in the toy trade is ecstatic and every activist is buzzing because a federal appeals court overturned a statute outlawing sex toy sales in Texas.

Before this ruling, if you were caught selling a sex toy, you could spend up to two years in jail which means more than five vibrators in your possession was just as legally damaging as a gram of cocaine. You were safer talking to a police officer with a gun in your trunk than a dildo in your, well, you get the picture.

This is only five years after the U.S. Supreme Court’’s 2003 opinion that struck down bans on consensual sex between same-sex couples. With Mississippi and Alabama being the last two states rotting away freedoms with their archaic laws on the sex toy trade, we are very close to a national acceptance of sexual technology. Americas legal system is taking large leaps toward staying out of our bedrooms.

This means our love lives are opening up. We have more opportunity to explore our sexuality and sexual desires. And while the law should not affect how we view certain sexual practices, it does. And now it can affect us in a positive way. We can, in turn, go to a sex store and look at the inventory without the stigma of seeing an item as illegal. We no longer need to see inventory as a political debate. We can see masturbators and massagers as what they are, technology to maintain and often improve a sexual relationship.

However, with all that said, a part of me is going to miss the most adorable “underground” that is the Texan sex-toy trade. I have had the joy of meeting a number of Texan retailers while visiting the novelty trade shows. We would laugh over drinks and talk about the numerous euphemisms they had to use to have their stores. “Educational models” for “instructors” and their “demonstrators. “Personal massagers” for patients.

“Cake toppers” for cake.”plugs” for anal areas.(The anus is not considered a sexual orifice). The dance is no longer necessary! The romance and fun is gone! Now, if you want a dildo in Austin, you can just walk into a sex store and say “I want a big toy to use with my girlfriend. The words “I want to teach my friend with some educational models and she wants something that she can see easily, so what is your largest size?” will no longer escape from the lips of Texan shoppers.

So while I celebrate by shipping phallic vibrators to all of my friends in Dallas, I will also mourn the loss of an entertaining art form sex toy code words. Goodbye “I am doing an interactive art project” and hello public requests for stimulators.

The federal government has done lots of things to make it easier to drive. Now it needs to make it easier to drive down the cost of gas.

By Knight Pierce Hirst

In 1925 the American Association of State Highway and Transportation set guidelines for numbering U.S. and interstate highways. For example, a three-digit interstate always ends with the two-digit number of the main interstate it loops off - except for I-238. Three-digit road numbers beginning with even numbers are always beltways that go around a city - except when they go through a city. Is it just me or did our transportation officials use new math for these guidelines?

In 1974 the National Speed Law went into effect. Because of the 1973 oil crisis and the need to conserve gas, the law made 55 mph the maximum speed limit. In 1995 the law was repealed and the ability to set speed limits was returned to the states. Again maybe it’’s just me, but with gas prices now over $4 a gallon that might have been a mis-state.

In all fifty states road signs are colored coded. Warning signs are yellow and construction signs are orange. Motorist service signs are blue and public interest signs are brown. Then there are parking signs. All parking signs are rectangular, but the green and white ones control parking and the red and white ones restrict it. Oh yes, and if a policeman asks me what’’s black and white and read all over, I know he means a speed limit sign - not a newspaper.

I live in Los Angeles. I can'’t speed anywhere at rush hour. That means my driving is limited to the hours between 10 am and 3 pm. That’’s workable unless one of the thousands and thousands of other cars on the freeways runs out of gas or has an accident. Then traffic backs up for miles as drivers turn into lookyloos. I moved to LA from New York. Drivers there don'’t slow down to look at accidents. In fact, they don'’t slow down if they'’re involved in accidents. Now when I'’m in traffic, it’’s the traffic that’’s driving - me crazy.

I have to remind myself traffic could be worse. I could be in Beijing. To reduce pollution for the summer Olympics, Beijing residents are restricted to driving every other day, depending on whether their license plates end with odd or even numbers. After the Olympics all 3.3 million cars will be back on the streets and that number will increase by 1,000 cars a day. Soon Beijing will have a lock on gridlock.

Have you ever realized that there is better way of sending funny birthday poems for a boyfriend? You are probably sending your funny birthday poem for a boyfriend through the snail mail. Well if you are a member to an online social utility, then it would be easier for you to send messages like those for free. An online social utility is a website where you can sign in or register for free and use all the applications and tools available for you. Post on your blogs, chat online, send messages, post comments on forums and the list goes on.

If you are a member to this social networks or online social utility, your poems can be seen worldwide on the internet or you can make private. When you make it private, it would only be you and whoever you allow to see it. You will the one who will dictate who can and who cannot see your poems. You may also want to create your own group of classmates or friends that are really into poem writing and that kind of stuff.

Memberships to these social interactive networks are mostly free. Becoming a member gives you a lot of choices in terms of sending and communicating to your boyfriend or the people around you. To connect and communicate to people you know cannot be easier. You can find people too, on a network like this. Best of all you can chat online with your boyfriend, relatives, classmates, schoolmates and people you know.

There are other things you can do with your poems. You can write more a let the whole know who wrote them, and then you become an instant celebrity or a well known poem writer. Some people make a living writing poems or write them on a part time basis. And the best vehicle for you to be known and recognize is through this social networks. The benefits of being part these groups are the free access to keep in touch with your friends or boyfriend. Another thing you can do is create a group of people who do the same thing as you do so that you can connect and communicate on how to do things.

It is so common nowadays to be a member of an online social utility network especially younger people. They love being well connected to their classmates and schoolmates that some of them may be registered to two or even five different websites. It is a craze that is going to be very popular especially sending messages and keeping in touch.

In todays world, sending messages are mostly done online or through the internet. Using short messaging services can cost a lot of money if you use too long or more frequently. Whereas, in an online social utility network, it is free and you can do it for hours or as long as you can click the mouse of your computer. Thus, sending a funny birthday poem for a boyfriend can be done easier using a social group or community.

All work and no play used to make Jack a dull boy. Now it makes him the victim of stress-related diseases.

By Knight Pierce Hirst

My father’’s play was golf. To avoid being a golf widow, my mother played too. That left me a golf orphan, but I refused to learn the game. Instead, I watch it on television. For me the slow pace and the announcers'’ whispering are relaxing. Tiger Woods may have been credited with the spike in golf’’s popularity, but there are other factors. Golf doesn'’t have free agency, professional golfers are compensated in direct proportion to how well they play and they don'’t scratch their private parts on camera.

My escape from the stress of everyday living is movies. Originally I attributed this to being able to lose myself in the lives of the characters on the screen; but if that were the case, I could rent DVD’’s. No, it’’s the physical act of going to the movies that’’s therapeutic. Sitting quietly in a dark room for two hours is like a temporary return to the womb - and I can'’t be the only one who feels this way. Movie attendance is up 4.5% in spite of a down economy. For $10 we get a socially acceptable Do Not Disturb sign to put on our life.

For those who complain their life is all work and no play, speed-dating might be the answer. It’’s matchmaking by the clock. Singles arrive at a designated area - usually a bar - pay a fee and have 3-8 minutes to talk one-on-one with possible matches. Participants fill out a date form; and if matches are made, contact information is sent to both parties by the organizers. Studies done on speed-dating found most matches are made by 3-second, first impressions. The studies also found taller men and younger women are more desirable. It seems speed-dating doesn'’t slow down stereotyping.

Things, however, could be worse. All work and no play describes the life of a species of Madagascan chameleon. This species spends eight months of its one-year life in its egg, those eight months corresponding to the time of year when food is scarcest in the deserts of Madagascar. Its four months of life after hatching are spent fighting and mating. Then, after the eggs are laid, the chameleons die. The females changing color when they reject a male might be the only bright spot in their life, but that bright spot might be enviable. If female humans had that trait, we might not have as many headaches.

An interview with actor/comedian Skyler Stone.

By Megan Rellahan

He came from a small Michigan town and turned Hollywood upside down. From the moment actor/comedian Skyler Stone arrived in Los Angeles, people stopped and took notice. Never one to fit in with the crowd, being an outcast has become Stone’’s greatest asset. It is what separates him from the rest.

Grabbing the bull by the horns, Stone did not wait for Hollywood to open its doors, he opened them himself. Having begun his career by working on several of his own short films, stand-up routines, and various other forms of entertainment, Stone eventually landed a nationwide Blockbuster commercial promoting “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.” From there, the aspiring Hollywooder continued to push forward with his own projects. Refusing to wait for a job to fall into his lap, he worked diligently on his own. One of his many self-created projects included pulling pranks on folks living in Los Angeles. With a videotape in hand, Stone and his entourage cruise the streets looking for the next big con to pull on big businesses.

With great footage, sharp concepts, and gutsy stunts, Stone was able to sell his concept to Comedy Central. Thus, his career officially took off with a show called “Con.” Tossing boundaries out the window, Stone was hired to continue being his goofy self, pranking people and having fun. Hence, the birth of Comedy Central’’s biggest lawsuit-provoking series ever.

Five years ago, before his career skyrocketed, I first met Stone whe n he moved into my apartment building. One day as I sat outside on the balcony, this vibrant, highly enthusiastic guy walks by with his hair in wild, funky braids. He was wearing a yellow “mad-scientist-looking” jumpsuit. Talk about a recreation of a young Albert Einstein… this kid was definitely outrageous. When he noticed me staring at him, he smiled and waved.

“Hey there!” said Stone. “Like my outfit? I'’m dressed to go to Sundance.”

Since our first encounter, I watched Stone succeed in the most bizarre ways. If you have never seen “Con,” Stone pulls stunts on some big corporations including Subway and a major league baseball team, which actually did not make the show due to threats of multi-million dollar lawsuits.

What did make it on “Con” was an episode where Stone pretends to be homeless and gets a free makeover at a ritzy hair salon. He also gets his buddy’’s apartment clean by Maxim models who think they are posing for a photo shoot. No joke - they cleaned the entire pad! In his cheesiest outfit, Stone snaps shots with an unloaded camera as a beautiful woman he personally cast, scrubbed floors and washed windows. And need I remind you of the “porn episode” where Stone poses as an adult entertainment director. During the shoot, Stone proceeds to tell his “actors” to keep their clothes on for this “family-friendly” porn movie. In celebration of his dirty directorial debut, he invites real porn pros including famous adult filmmakers to view his latest piece of ” art.”

When asked how he came up with the television show “Con,” Stone replied, “I have been doing it all my life to get by.

“Whenever I wanted something that society deemed I could not have, I would turn around and disagree by showing them that I can indeed have it.”

Following the show “Con,” Stone continued doing what he does best, creating his own material. With the help of writers/actors Zach Johnson, Matt Moore, Greg Studley, Matt Peek, and Alanna Ubach (”The Fockers”), Stone made a sketch show called “Velcro.” Hilariously wacky, Stone and crew act in short skits that poke fun of Hollywood’’s top players such as Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise and many more, (which are airing on “Acted By”).

Along with his long list of credentials, such as his performances in a comedic film called “Accepted,” “Waiting,” “For Your Consideration,” and having landed the lead role, Quinn, a twenty-something year old slacker still living with his pop (Danny DeVito) in a soon-to-be released film called “House Broken,” Stone continues to reach higher plateaus in Hollywood.

Although Stone’’s outlook on life can be a tad outrageous, he is one dreamer who is actually living out his dream and will continue to do so, indefinitely. Stone does what every parent tells you not to do. He has proven that you can be yourself and still get what you want.

“Life is short,” says Stone, “and no one has a right to dictate how we live, feel, think and act.”

It seems there are new ways to lose weight every day in the news, but do we lose weight? Fat chance!

By Knight Pierce Hirst

To lose weight requires motivation and that can be harder to find than diet books or exercise machines. Experts suggest setting goals and rewarding yourself when you reach those goals. Other suggestions include going to exercise classes, working out with a partner and keeping an exercise log. Although one exercise guru suggested putting a before picture on the refrigerator, I think this quote from Margaret Thatcher would be more effective. “You may have to fight a battle more than once to win it”. That’’s how England’’s prime minister dealt with the weight on her shoulders and it should work just as well for other parts of the body.

Sixty-four percent of American bodies are overweight and the other thirty-four percent think they know what to do about it. One blogger suggested overweight people should pay more for gas because extra pounds require more gas to move them. It seems the blogger didn'’t understand that requiring more gas requires more to be purchased and thus overweight people already pay more for gas. It seems many solutions for weight problems come from lightweights.

Another solution may be grapefruit. According to a recent study, eating grapefruit before each meal will make it easier to lose weight. In the study ninety-one obese patients added grapefruit to their regular diets. This resulted in an average loss of four pounds in twelve weeks. The researchers attributed this to grapefruit having compounds that improve insulin resistance and that facilitate fat loss. When eight ounces of unsweetened grapefruit juice were substituted for the fruit, the average loss was three pounds in twelve weeks. If gin were added to the before-dinner grapefruit juice - making a greyhound cocktail - the loss would undoubtedly be less; but would we care as much?

Experts at the University of South Carolina say we should care about walking. They say walking an easy three miles per hour - which is twenty minutes per mile - for thirty minutes five times a week provides enough exercise to protect us cardiovascularly, as well as to increase our longevity. For those of us who don'’t think we have an extra thirty minutes in our day, there’’s plan B. The same results can be achieved by splitting the time into smaller segments - as long as each segment is at least ten minutes. Not being able to find three, ten-minute segments in our day would itself be a weighty problem.

When we make wishes, we don''t pay attention to detail. Maybe the only safe thing to do is wish for more wishes

By Knight Pierce Hirst

If you'’ve wished for a healthy, fast-food breakfast at home, quick breads might be for you. Because they are leavened without yeast, you don'’t have to wait around for them to rise. Because you can add fruit, nuts, whole grains and other good stuff to the many available recipes, quick breads are much healthier than commercially baked breads. According to a recipe I found on line, I could have fresh blueberry pecan muffins in less than thirty minutes. Yes, they are quick to fix; but there doesn'’t seem to be a quick fix for laziness.

Laziness isn'’t a word you'’d associate with the 2008 Olympic swimming trials in Omaha, Nebraska; but controversy is. The controversy started at the 2000 Olympics when Australia’’s Ian Thorpe won three gold medals and two silver medals wearing a full-body swimsuit. Now Speedo, having tested sixty fabrics in order to lower skin friction drag, has developed its full-body swimsuit - the LZR Racer. Thirty-eight world records have been broken by competitors wearing the LZR Racer since it was released in February. Non-wearers, who can'’t keep up with swimsuit technology, are upset. One competitor is so upset he became involved with a different kind of suit - an anti-trust suit.

For people who have been wishing for an inexpensive, non-gas-guzzling car, there’’s the Zap Xebra. It’’s a converted motorcycle rickshaw that was developed in the U.S. and modified in China. This $12,000, all-electric vehicle goes 40 mph, gets 25 miles per charge and costs only $10-$12 per month to drive. That’’s the good news. The bad news is this four-seated vehicle has a weight capacity of 303 lbs. That’’s about 75 lbs. per passenger. If the Xebra is what you have wished for, maybe you should wish for light-hearted passengers too.

The Nielson Company estimates how many people - lighthearted or not - are watching television and advertisers pay for airtime based on those estimates. That’’s the way it’’s been since the 1940′’s. Now, however, viewers have a choice of more than three hundred channels. Now there must be a better way. There is - the cable box. The cable box knows what every cable viewer is watching. When you combine that information with the information the supermarket computer knows when we use our club card, you get what advertisers want to know - payoff on return of investment. While Nielson is monitoring twelve thousand people, Big Brother will be monitoring us.

If my grandmother had been the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, she would have taken care of pollution with six words. Clean up what you mess up.

By Knight Pierce Hirst

When I think environment, I think Smokey Bear. Smokey was created in 1944 by the Ad Council and has been part of the longest running public service campaign in U.S. history. In 1952, however, song writers Steve Nelson and Jack Rollins tried to change Smokey’’s name. When they wrote their hit “Smokey The Bear”, they gave Smokey “The” for a middle name to improve the rhythm of their song. Obviously, they couldn'’t deal with the bear facts.

Americans can'’t deal with plastic bags. Plastic bags are everywhere - blowing in the wind, stuck in bushes, clogging roadside drains and filling bellies of sea turtles. Because these bags are cheap, sturdy and easy to store, they have taken over 80% of the grocery and convenience store market since being introduced in the 1970′’s. Between 500 billion and a trillion bags are used worldwide every year. The bags that make it to landfills take hundreds of years to decompose; and as they decompose, toxins seep into the soils, lakes, rivers and oceans. Countries like Australia, South Africa and Ireland have taxed these bags. In fact, the tax in Ireland has caused a 95% reduction in the use of plastic bags. Is it just me or does a tax make good cents?

Plastic bottles are everywhere too - in parks, along roadsides and filling landfills - but that isn'’t the worst part. Ninety percent of environmental damage from plastic water bottles occurs before they are opened. This is because those bottles leave a carbon footprint big enough to trip over. Twenty-nine billion plastic water bottles are used yearly in the U.S. Making those bottles requires nearly 900,000 tons of plastic, which is the equivalent of more than 17 million barrels of crude oil. Pumping, processing, transporting and refrigerating the water increase the amount of oil used to 50 million barrels. That’’s enough to run 3 million cars for a year. While we'’re drinking water for our health, we'’re killing the environment by ignoring facts that hold water.

Unfortunately, other environmental threats aren'’t as obvious as plastic pollution. Nitrogen trifluoride is used to make flat screen televisions and microchips. Scientists say this gas has 17,000 times the global warming effect as carbon dioxide. Nitrogen trifluoride isn'’t measured in the atmosphere and it isn'’t regulated by international treaty. Nitrogen trifluoride is one of the unseen threats to our environment. What we need to see is change.
