A mother''s influence is very important in forming not only who and what we are, but who and what we ultimately become, how we view the world and how we relate to others. This article explores how parental influence shapes our expectation about love.

By Deborrah Cooper

In the mid-1960s, Motown great Smokey Robinson (backed up by his group The Miracles) topped the R&B charts with “You Betta Shop Around!” Goes something like this:

‘’There’’s some things that I want you to know now
Just as sure as the winds gonna blow now
The women come and the women gonna go now
Before you tell ‘’em that you love ‘’em so now
My mama told me…'’you better shop around'’

Don'’t Settle for the First Thing That Comes Along

“Well the best thing my mother has told me is watch out for fast women!” said Steve, a 39 year old bachelor with a wry smile. “She told me that long ago. Said they often turn out to be women you basically would not want in the long run. But wow, fast women sure are fun!”

Krystal, now 55, was raised in a home with adultery quite a bit of physical abuse. She and her sisters witnessed her mother being hit many times over the years under her parents divorced when she was 16.

“Divorce wasn'’t common in those days, and my mom changed after that. She told me to never settle, ever. She said that while she was raised at a time where women weren'’t free to do a lot of dating and getting to know different men, that she didn'’t want any of her daughters to be caught in that stale pool. She told me to respect myself, never let anyone (including men) disrespect me… but to enjoy myself and enjoy life.”

Her youngest sister Katherine added: “Mom advised that I should get to know ME first and what I liked/disliked because I could never express to someone else what was right or wrong with the way our relationship was if I didn'’t know what it took for me to be happy and satisfied. She reminded me that I had a whole lifetime to fall in love, and encouraged me not to rush into love because I felt it was what I was expected to do or had to do (ya know how some young women will talk themselves into being in love when they become intimate with a man?). Then she told me not to wear too much “rouge” (blush)… because men would never marry a woman that looked loose! LOL!”

At 27 Antonio is hot on the hip hop music scene in Los Angeles. His parents immigrated from Bolivia in the 1970s. “Look, 80 percent of the things my mother says I don'’t agree with. Maybe it’’s because she’’s a woman, but when it comes to relationships she is the judge, jury and executioner! Bring yo gurl or potential gurl around and I'’ll be damned if Mom doesn'’t expose her for the Princess she is or the tramp she is within 30 seconds flat!

The point I'’m tryin'’ to make is that parents know the game because they seen it all. A father will read yo man like a book and a mother will give you the 411 on the so called woman of yo dreams. You might not want to hear it but hey, that’’s how it is.”

Fathers stepped in to fill in the blanks when Mom didn'’t have relationship advice for her offspring. “My mom didn'’t specifically give me any advice on love, I'’m more so a product of my father’’s training” wrote Dionne, a 30 year old marketing rep from Dallas.

“When I was about 9 or 10, I remembered my Dad telling me that when I grew up, I mustn'’t allow any man to treat me badly…and I haven'’t so far. My father also always allowed me to have the best of anything he had to give or share with me. For example, if he had some fruits, and I wanted any…he would pick out the best looking ones or pieces and offer them to me, and keep the lesser ones for himself. For better or worst, I think I grew up to subconsciously use that standard to judge any man I become involved with. If I don'’t see/believe that they consistently take the initiative to always offer me the best…then I know that their time is limited, because I won'’t really trust their alleged love for me.”

Don'’t Make My Mistakes!

Not all the advice received from Mom was positive. Sherilyn sent an email to share the dating tips learned from her mother. “From my mother I heard: ‘’Don'’t use me as an example in love, I make horrible choices and have suffered in love.'’ She is very, very correct in that statement. Though I'’m an accomplished person in my professional life, sadly I modeled a lot of my dating behavior after her and make horrible choices in men too.”

Carmen’’s mother focused on self-esteem and acceptance. “From my mother I learned ‘’A man will treat you as well as you INSIST, and as badly as you ALLOW.'’ And from my father ‘’everyone you meet can teach you SOMETHING, even if it’’s only whom to AVOID!'’

The Dirty Dozen Top 12 List

Many of the tips that came in were very popular, as they were provided by dozens of Moms to their sons and daughters. Here, in no particular order, are the most commonly quoted 12 pieces of advice:

1) Don'’t play yourself short. It’’s better to be the Mrs. than the Mistress!
2) Don'’t love him…but like him. Romance is for weaklings…it clouds your thinking.
3) Pick your battles…don'’t be a nag to your man.
4) Men pay for sex one way or another. It’’s always better to be the Mrs. than the Mistress!
5) Don'’t tell a man everything… they can'’t handle it. Don'’t reveal everything unless you wanna deal with b.s. all the time.
6) Learn the art of forgiveness. Don'’t bring up the past…unless you wanna deal with b.s. all the time.
7) Always keep “car fare” when going out on a date.
8) Always have a stash of your own money. Keep a savings account in your own name (even when you get married).
9) Never give out personal vital information on the first date.
10) Trust and Respect are EARNED not a GIVEN.
11) If you can'’t be with the one you love, love the one you'’re with!
12) It’’s just as easy to love a rich man/woman as it is to love a poor one!

Mothers are very influential over their children. Some of us take the lessons and use them, some of us discard every one of Mom’’s words as being bogus and choose our own path.

Without courage and risk of heartache, you cannot achieve the glory and wonders of love. Use Mom’’s teachings as a guideline on when and how to give of yourself, maintain personal boundaries of respect, and keep in your life only men and women that give as good as they get.

By Paul Hata

What does it take to be a doctor? The answer is 4 years of undergraduate studies, 4 years of medical school, 3 to 7 years as an intern and resident then a couple of more years to move into a more specialized field.

But going to school is just one of the steps in medical career training. Aside from reading books, you have to know how to put theory into practice by doing the real thing.

Since the medical field is quite broad, how this is taught to the student varies. If you want to start your career by enrolling in a trade or vocational school, you will have to study courses such as anatomy, infection control, physiology and medical terminology. Of course, you will also have to mathematics and chemistry.

Once you make it through the basic courses, you will go into more advanced topics of these subjects. Eventually, you will be given hands on training and so you better remember everything you learned because you can'’t afford to make a mistake when you are dealing with the life of a patient.

Technicians on the other hand should know how to operate the equipment that they will be using. This can be a simple injection to a high tech computer system that is designed to analyze samples drawn from the patient. Those who don'’t want to work in a lab and would rather as a paramedic may do so by working for private ambulance services.

But one field of medicine that has experienced shortages throughout the years is nursing as many of them are nearing retirement age. This is the reason that nurses who have worked abroad are hired to work in the US. Given that there is a demand for such individuals, people who want to earn money and a lot more may choose to go to school and become nurses.

Another option will be for you to go into medical transcription. Here, the person transcribes the notes that have been taken said by the doctor. They are usually hired after finishing post secondary training which includes anatomy, medical terms and legal issues regarding health care documentation, grammar and punctuation in the English language.

The last part of medical transcription training is supervised on the job training. The American Association of Medical Transcriptionist or CMT is the one that certifies those who pass the course. These students are required to update their skills and credits every three years so they do not lose their edge in this field.

Aside from training in the classroom, students who find it difficult to go to school can learn medical career training online. You will need a computer, a broadband connection and the software that should be provided by the school that you will be enrolling in.

Once these requirements have been met, you can learn just like you are there in the classroom then probably come to class to take the exam.

Medical career training is the first step to become a licensed or certified medical professional. You can browse online to see what is in the program, compare their prices and see how many of their students have passed or have done well in their professions which is a indicator that can tell you if it is going to be worth your time and money to sign up with them or with someone else.

By Paul Hata

The high demand for individuals to fill jobs in the medical field is not brought about by new job opportunities.

The demand is actually just fueled by the need for excellent health care services needed by a growing and prospering population.

Truth of the matter is, there are no new career offerings in the medical field. There are just more opportunities available now for well established jobs in the medical field and one such example are medical supply sales careers.

Medical supply sales careers are not a new thing. In fact these types of jobs have been present for a long time. The most common type of medical supply sales job is that of the medical representative.

A medical sales representative is employed by a pharmaceutical company and it is these sales reps job to call on physicians and pay them visits to give them free samples of the drugs that the pharmaceutical company carries.

Medical sales representatives are employed by pharmaceutical companies as a means to deliver targeted marketing to physicians who have the power to prescribe these medications to their patients. This way, pharmaceutical companies can push the sales of their products through the doctors that prescribe them to the patients that need them.

This type of sales tactic is especially successful for marketing and pushing the sales of prescription drugs. This is because mass marketing of prescription drugs is not possible and the best way to push sales of these is by targeting the physicians that can choose to prescribe them to their patients.

Getting into this type of job is especially promising, lucrative and satisfying for those who have an inclination for sales. If you don'’t have any sales experience or you'’re not sure if a career in sales is for you, don'’t despair. A medical supply sales career may still be for you.

Sales people possess excellent communications skills focused on the ability to persuade and convince others into a desired action. In the case of the medical representative of a pharmaceutical company, the sales person needs to convince the physician to choose their type of medication over the rest.

To do this, the sales rep needs very good relationship building and management skills. Most medicines in the same category have the same attributes and efficacy so sometimes, it really all boils down to the skill of the medical rep to sell his products effectively.

Given this, particularly good medical sales reps are compensated very well through actual financial perks but also through fringe benefits like a good service car and vacation and leisure packages. This is why many people consider getting into this type of job and decide to stay and advance in their careers here.

These days though, sales careers in medicine are not only confined to sales reps from different pharmaceutical companies trying to sell different prescription and non-prescription drugs to physicians.

Medical supply sales careers are more encompassing than that these days as different outfits need more and more individuals to join their dynamic workforce to help push the trial and sales of different medical supplies to different health care facilities.

Medical supply sales careers are now not only offered by pharmaceutical companies but by different medical and health care companies that have good products to sell through targeted sales tactics.

By Paul Hata

A good nurse doesn'’t pursue a nursing because they are lured by the promise of huge paychecks. Good nurses don'’t work towards a career in nursing because they are convinced that they will be able to work short shifts that will leave them lots of time to spend with their families.

Good nurses don'’t become nurses because they are looking for careers that require a limited amount of manual labor. Good nurses don'’t become nurses because they feel that nursing will be easier then becoming a doctor. Nurses become nurses because they are compelled to help sick and injured patients.

There are several things that need to happen before a person can become a nurse. The first thing they have to do is become enrolled in a educational program that specializes in nursing. There is currently a shortage of educational nursing programs which can make it difficult for potential nurses to get in. If you are somebody who is interested in pursuing a career in nursing you will want to apply to enroll in a nursing program as early as possible.

Once the student has been accepted into an educational nursing program the student can choose to pursue a variety of degrees including; an associate degree, a bachelors degree, a masters degree, or even a nursing doctorate.

Registered nurses are nurses that access and record patients reactions and symptoms, and reactions. Once they become registered, nurses are free to pursue careers in the hospital, home or office. Nurses who are interested in becoming travel nurses are required to be RN’’s

Office nurses are nurses who work in a doctor’’s office. Most office nurses are responsible for administering medications to patients, prepping the patient for their examine, and helping to dress wounds. Because office nurses generally work in doctor’’s offices, they tend to have a fairly routine work schedule, that seldom changes from one day

Another type of nurse is a home nurse. A home nurse is a nurse who goes into someone who needs medical attention (often the elderly) and sees to their medical needs. In some cases a home nurse will even move into their patients home, until the patient no longer needs their services. Some home nurses work as midwifes, and will help parents deliver their children in the comfort of their own home.

Hospital nurses are, by definition, nurses who work in hospitals. Although some hospital nurses work a rotating shift that lets them work in several different departments, but a majority of hospital nurses decide to go into specialized areas of medicine such as pediatrics, surgery, or emergency.

Registered nurses are nurses that access and record patients reactions and symptoms, and reactions. Once they become registered, nurses are free to pursue careers in the hospital, home or office.

Nurses who are interested in becoming travel nurses are required to be RN’’s.Travel nurses have to spend one year working at a hospital before most agencies will accept their application. The year they spend working should be in their chosen field.

By Paul Hata

If you want to help people, go for a health and medical career. This can only happen of course once you have gone through training which many last from a couple of years or even longer.

The medical field has since broadened. There are now fields of specialization so if you haven'’t yet chosen what you want to pursue, perhaps you should browse through the medical a list of medical careers. To give you some idea, here are a few of them :

1.Dentists
Brushing and flossing your teeth isn'’t enough to keep them clean. This is why people are told to visit the dentist once a year or every six months. Dentistry is usually completed after 8 years of education. It takes just as long as a medical doctor and analysts believe this demand will grow as the large number of are expected to retire soon.

The job of the dentist is to diagnose, prevent and treat problems in the teeth and also the mouth tissue. They may perform x-rays, put in protective plastic sealants, extract or repair fractured teeth. If patients need to straighten their teeth, then they have to visit an orthodontist.

Dentists use a variety of equipment to get the job done. These include mouth mirrors, probes, forceps, brushes, scalpels, drills and x-ray machines. To protect themselves and their patients, they must always sterilize their equipment; wear masks, gloves that must be disposed afterwards and protective glasses.

2.Emergency Medical Technicians
When someone is injured, we are taught to dial 911 and wait until help arrives. The one that comes through the door is a EMT or emergency medical technician whose job is to stabilize the patient until they reach the hospital.

The EMT uses special equipment like a backboard to immobilize the patient if they are seriously injured to the regular stretcher. They always work in teams. One EMT drives the ambulance while the other stays in the back to monitor the patient. Some EMT’’s are even part of the flight crew of a medical evacuation team.Once they reach the hospital, they have to inform the doctor the current situation and then let them take it from there.

3.Nurses
If you like to work in a hospital or clinic side by side with a doctor, then perhaps you can choose to become a practical nurse. Their job is to care the convalescent, disabled, injured and sick. This is done by making the rounds and checking on the vital signs of the patient including the blood pressure, pulse and respiration.

They will also administer injection, enemas, monitor catheters, treat bedsores, give massages, apply dressings and a host of other things as instructed by the doctor. If another test is needed, they will collect samples. Depending on what state they are in, they may be allowed to prescribe medicines or start intravenous fluids.

4.Optometrists
If you want to help someone with their eyesight, you can become an optometrist. Their job is to examine the vision of the patient and then prescribe eyeglasses or contact lenses. They may also prescribe medication as part of vision therapy and low vision rehabilitation.

People should not be confused between the optometrist and the ophthalmologist because this person does not more than just hand out corrective lenses. They perform eye surgery so the person may see again like those who are suffering from glaucoma and other eye diseases.

5.Respiratory Therapists
You may also become a respiratory therapist. This person is tasked to evaluate, treat and care for patients who have difficulty breathing or are suffering from other cardiopulmonary disorders.

They usually work under the direct supervision of the physician. To evaluate a patient, an interview is first conducted before a physical examination is done. Tests are then done to analyze the oxygen, carbon dioxide and pH levels and then comparing them with the age, height, sex and height of the patient if they are below or above normal. The results are then used to make the proper treatment decisions.

Respiratory therapists do not only treat old people but also premature infants that have not yet produced fully develop lungs. They may also be called in to help those suffering from asthma, drowning, heart attack, shock and a stroke.

6.Social Workers
One job that is not often see in line with health and medical careers but do play a role is that of a social worker. They help people who have serious illnesses, disabilities and substance abuse. They also assist families who have inadequate housing and those who are in serious domestic conflicts especially those with child or spousal abuse.

7.Speech Therapist
People who have a hard time speaking or pronouncing words will feel better after they are treated by a speech language pathologists better known as a speech therapists. These individuals assess, diagnose and treat those who have speech and communication disorders.

These speech problems may be caused by a brain injury, cerebral palsy, developmental delays, hearing impairment, language difficulties or a stroke. Given that each patient is different, the specialist will have to develop an individualized plan of care in order for it to work. The end result is for the person to be able to make sounds, improve their voice and most importantly increase their language skills so they are able to communicate more effectively.

8.Surgeons
For those that want to get into the heat of the action, they may work as surgeons. This is very challenging as most doctors work more than 60 hours a week inside the operating room. Aside from general surgery, there are many who specialize in a specific area.

Some examples of these include orthodontic surgery that is the treatment of the skeletal system, neurological that is involved with the treatment of the brain, orthopedic that is with the eyes, otolaryngology that is the treatment of the ear, nose and throat as well as plastic or reconstructive surgery for those are recovering from burn injuries or simply want to change their physical appearance.

There are many opportunities in the medical fields. You just have to find something you like and then take the proper courses in order to be certified.

While some of the jobs mentioned you can do for the rest of your life, there are others that you can'’t.But if you still want to help people, go through the above list again and make that career shift.

The growth ageing population worldwide has resulted in the huge demand for health and medical care personnels, providing an excellent future and growth.

By Paul Hata

The wonderful dearly departed comic Chris Farley had a character that was a professional motivational speaker. That character was Matt Foley and he was an absolute mess.

His speaking style was painful and destructive and he lived (say it with me) in a van down by the river. Well, as hilarious as that routine was, that characterization of professional speakers is obviously for comedy purposes only.

If you have been given the gift of public speaking, there is every reason to believe that you can make a very good living doing it for a living.

One way to view making your living as a public speaker is to see it as a variation on the profession of professional author.

When you think about it, a writer of informative books takes an area of expertise that they have excelled at and they used their skills in writing to lay that out for people who need that knowledge.

And when people buy that knowledge, it’’s a fair exchange to pay that person for that valuable knowledge and allow that author to continue writing.

You can also compare a professional public speaker to the noble calling of teacher.A teacher, after all, is someone who does public speaking every day for his or her students.

And that public speaking has a vital function in our society. Without it, our children would not be educated and the way our culture functions would be in serious danger. So professional public speakers are important.

How to get your own career as a professional public speaker going is the challenge. You may be used to public speaking to help with your work or as part of your membership in a church or other organization. So it may not be a big leap to think of taking that skill to the next level and seek ways to get paid doing what you love to do, speaking to larger groups about your area of expertise.

As might happen if you took your area of skill that you have the most knowledge an put that in a book form, that focus is your meal ticket to be successful as a professional public speaker.

So to get the ball rolling, the first step is to add to the level of notoriety you may have as a professional in your field of knowledge. The internet is a good starting place.

By building a web site where you can showcase your knowledge and using the skills of internet marketers to get some traffic to that web site, it is there you can begin to build an audience for your knowledge area and to keep them informed on times and places where you will be speaking.

Once that web site is in place, it can be a foundation for your new public speaking career. You can send people to it after each talk you give where they can learn more about how to use your talents for their function and for their audience.

But don'’t just rest on the internet and expect it to do all the work. There are lots of organizations that you can speak at either for free or for a small gratuity (sometimes just lunch). But the value of these meetings is not the pay, its getting momentum and some buzz as a speaker.

From then on its just a matter of networking. As members of those groups carry your business card with them, they refer you and you get more and more “gigs” presenting your talk to bigger groups. Before long the gratuities turn into real pay. And when you are on your way and things start to click, you will never look back on your decision to become a professional public speaker.

New job? New career? Figure out what everyone else is bringing to the table...and what they''re taking home.

By Cathy Goodwin

Someone I'’ll call “Gloria” told me this story:

“At a recent potluck dinner, my friend Brian brought a six-pack of his special cider. We had more beverages than we needed. At the end of the evening, Brian went into the refrigerator and grabbed his untouched cider. He took it home.

“Our hostess, Nancy, was furious. She wrote Brian a strong email, claiming he had insulted her”

My sympathies are with Brian. To me, a potluck means you bring a contribution to the party, not a gift for the hostess. And I avoid those events whenever possible.

So…what’’s the relevance for careers?

Clients often call me when they'’re puzzled by events in a new job (”Why would I be asked to edit this report when I'’m a senior manager?”). Or maybe they'’ve got a new employee and they'’re tearing their hair out, wondering, “Why would anyone skip a meeting when we specifically said attendance was expected?” And more.

It’’s all about fitting into a new environment — whether you'’re new to a job, career or even service where you'’re the customer.

(1) Don'’t get mad — get inquisitive.

A prospective client asked if I could edit some content. I explained that I don'’t do editing. I don'’t tweak other people’’s words, commas and paragraphs.

But I discovered she used the word “editing” to mean “writing copy starting with a written discussion of our target market.”

So “edit” might be a polite way of saying, “This report is worthless. Just start over.”

And some folks distinguish between “expected” and “required.”

(2) Study the lunchtime lingo.

Groups have norms about teasing, dressing up, initiating conversations, writing memos and lunch.

Some people see an invitation to lunch as the closest thing to a marriage proposal, especially if a male invites a female or vice versa. (I wish I were kidding.)

Some groups have norms about bringing lunch, eating out, and skipping lunch to work out.

I once heard about a department where bringing your lunch meant you had taken yourself off the fast track. I heard about another where nobody ate at all: the “in” crowd went running. A consulting firm took seriously the maxim of “Never eat lunch alone.” Associates were expected to sacrifice their waist lines by taking clients to lunch several times a week. I suspect doggie bags were a big no-no.

If these issues are important, you can usually find out before you get hired.

But if you really hate meetings, you might get a pass by feigning ignorance. When asked why you didn'’t show, you say, “I though ‘’expected'’ meant ‘’lightly suggested.'’ So I skipped the meeting and took a client to lunch.”

Use at your own risk…once.

(3) Avoid the old-timer trap.

Every time I changed jobs, even in the same career field, even in universities with similar structures, I bumped up against new cultures.

What do you ask the admin staff to do? Where do you get coffee (and when)? And if you miss a meeting or turn down a lunch offer, are you branding yourself as a maverick?

Inevitably I made mistakes. And I watched other newcomers do the same.

The reasons were innocent. If you'’ve asked a staff assistant to make copies or calls for the last 5 years, you'’ll automatically do the same at your new job. You probably won'’t even stop to wonder, “Should I do this?” unless you'’ve been made aware that customs might vary in that particular area.

But old-timers (who can'’t imagine any other way either) tend to assume the worst. When I became an old-timer (or at least a medium-timer), colleagues would ask rhetorically, “Who does he think he is?”

It took awhile, but over the years I learned to say, “He thinks he is a lost, confused newcomer. Let’’s explain that we need to go have coffee and it’’s a non-negotiable right now.”

Returning to the potluck example: I suspect Brian’’s friends always took home the leftovers — their own and maybe everyone else’’s. It never crossed his mind to leave his cider in someone else’’s refrigerator.

That’’s my own favorite part of a potluck. The folks who know how to cook never want leftovers. More for me.

By Paul Hata

Being self-employed comes with many challenges determining your niche, finding clients, having adequate insurance, hiring additional help, etc.

To succeed as a freelancer, contractor or a new business owner, you have to have determination, passion and patience, much of the same characteristics you need to successfully hunt for a new job. So why is self-employment on a resume a concern for your potential employer?

Listing self-employment on your resume when looking for full-time job can raise questions for your potential employer. They will ask questions such as:

1.Were self-employed because you were in between jobs, or because you wanted to start your own business rather than work for a corporation?

2.Are you still working on your own, as a freelancer or a consultant? If so, do you intent to continue this work in addition to your full time job?

3.Is your self-employment presenting a conflict of interest for the company?

4.Are you working as a freelancer or a contractor on part-time basis, and never intend to have this replace full-time employment?

5.Does your long-term career goal include owning your own business?

All of these questions are valid from your potential employer’’s point of view. Companies do not want to hire you, train you and provide you with benefits only to have you quit after a year to start your own business.

This is the main reason previous or current self-employment raises red flags for the hiring organizations. The best way to address any self-employment on your resume is to highlight the positives of working as a freelancer or managing your own business. It is important that your resume includes employment history that is honest and relevant to your career goals.

If you pick up a freelance project infrequently and do not intend to make this a full time career, you can omit any such experience from your resume. The only time you would list occasional freelance work on your resume is if it allows you to fill any gaps in your professional experience.

If you have worked as a contractor for a period longer than three months, or if you have ever owned your own business, it is important that you indicate that on your resume. Highlight those attributes of the job experience that qualify you as a perfect candidate for the job that you are seeking.

Your job responsibilities should be listed in the same way as they are for any other full-time job you'’ve held; focus on those responsibilities which best meet your career objective and quantify your achievements when possible.

Exemplify your self-starter attitude under the Qualifications section of your resume. Make sure to list any employability skills you have acquired or strengthened while you were self employed.

As a final indication of your commitment to the job you are seeking. Make sure that your cover letter or email addresses anticipated concerns of your potential employer. Make references to anything on your resume that may raise questions.

If you still own your own business, but are looking for full-time work, for example, make sure to let your employer know what your long-term professional goals are and how you intend to balance your roles at both businesses.

Don'’t apologize for being self-employed. Your resume and cover letter should present you as a credible and passionate professional. Focus on the positive experiences and skills you have acquired as a freelancer, and make sure to let the employer know how these will benefit the company if you are their chosen candidate.

By Paul Hata

As a society, we pride our selves in our diversity and make conscious effort to appreciate each other’’s cultures and backgrounds. In any given company in America, you can find training teams conducting inclusion trainings, and openly discussion diverse work environments. Diversity has become a part of our culture, both in and outside of work, and it is something that we seldom stop to appreciate.

A sizeable portion of the American workforce has acquired at least a part of their education in a foreign country. If you are in that group, one of the main challenges you will face when composing your resume is transferring your education and any experience you may have from another country in a way that shows your qualifications and achievements in a way that is relevant to your American employer.

When it comes to your scholastic achievements, make sure that you understand the education system in the US. Familiarize yourself with various levels of college degrees; make sure that you understand the difference between trade schools, colleges and universities, as well as the various degrees you can acquire at each of these educational facilities. Do not translate your degree directly make sure that the terminology you are using is appropriated to educational achievements in the US.

I would advise seeking assistance from a translating service or from a resume writing service that may have someone on staff that speaks your language or is familiar with your country and its culture. This will assure that the education and employment information you acquired in another country is properly listed in your resume.

Do not make a mistake of exaggerating the position you have held or the degree you received in another country. Consider the fact that your potential employer has very limited resources in order to verify the foreign education or employment you list on your resume.

This doesn'’t mean you have a free pass to make things up; instead, gather any documentation you may have that shows your achievements. If you have any transcripts or degrees from your school, or any awards from your previous employment, take them to a translating service that will recreate and notarize these documents in English.

Make a note on your resume or in your cover letter that you can show such documentation upon employer’’s request. Additionally, if English is your second language, under your qualifications make sure to list any additional languages that you speak fluently.

Having a resume free of typos and grammatical errors will indicate to your employer that you have taken the time to learn the language and that you place high emphasis on your communication skills.

As a best practice, if your resume includes education or work experience you acquired in a foreign country, your cover letter should address any concerns that may be brought up by this information.

Your employer may have questions on why you left the country where you previously work, or if you intend to go back after some time (if you came to the United States to further your education, indicate the length of time you are staying).

Keep these things in mind put yourself in a position of your potential employer who is reviewing your resume and anticipate any questions they may have about your professional history.

Addressing any concerns about your resume ahead of time will assure that you are taken seriously as a qualified and credible candidate.

By Paul Hata

With every resume submission, you should have a cover letter that accompanies it and presents you as a positive and qualified candidate for the job.

A cover letter should highlight areas of your resume which promote your professional experience, and should address any questions an employer may have about hiring you for the job.

There are 5 common cover letter mistakes outlined below that you must avoid in order to get through the first round of resume review and move one step closer to getting the job that you want.

1.Addressing the cover letter using a generic greeting, or misspelling the name of the personal contact or the company. The address line is the most prominent part of the cover letter; it should be included even if the cover letter is sent via email.

Generic greetings are not favored; they make it seem like you have a template for your cover letter and you simply send it to all employers you are interested in working for. Do the research and find out who the appropriate contact is for the cover letter.

However, make sure that they name and the company name is spelled correctly. If your address line contains errors, your cover letter is likely to never make it to the hiring manager.

2.Telling the company what they can do for your career. Simply stated, employers care about your qualifications and what you can do for the company. Do not spend your time telling the company how working for them can be great for your career. While that could be true, it certainly is not what the employers want to hear.

Your potential employers want to hear how you can benefit their team; they want to know what you can bring to the table that is innovative, and focused on results. Make sure that your resume lets your employer know just why you are the best candidate for the job.

3.You re-state your resume. Do not go over the information that is in your resume in your cover letter. Your cover letter is meant to entice, and provoke the employer to review your resume in great detail.

Re-stating the information in your resume doesn'’t address what the employers want to know, which concerns reasons why you are the best candidate for the job. Highlight certain areas of your resume but do so in the context of your career goals and how such qualifications benefit the company.

4.Starting every sentence with “I”. While your cover letter is about you, starting each sentence this way will make your employer believe that your communication skills are not up to the level of your professional background.

Discuss your qualifications, your goals and what you bring to the table in terms of the company, and your professional attributes.

5.Asking the employer to call you at their convenience. The most generic closing statements in cover letters ask the employer to contact you at their convenience. If you are truly excited about the opportunity with the employer, you won'’t want to wait for them to call you back whenever they feel like it.

What you should do instead is let them know when you want to follow up and then do follow up. Close your cover letter by letting your potential employer know that you will contact them, as well as the manner in which you will do so. This shows your interest, and your take-charge attitude.

Your resume is the first contact your potential employer has with you. A well formatted and a well-written resume can make a difference between getting the interview and getting the job, and being passed over.

By Paul Hata

Job hunting can be one of the most exhilarating and yet one of the most agonizing experiences in your life. While you look forward to the new chapter in your professional life, finding a way to stand out from other candidates, who are at least equally qualified for the position you want, is a difficult task.

Your resume is the first contact your potential employer has with you. A well formatted and a well-written resume can make a difference between getting the interview and getting the job, and being passed over.

Most employers receive a stack of resumes of qualified candidates and scan them quickly before they decide whether or not hey want to read further. You only have a few seconds to make a lasting impression. Don'’t panic. Instead, focus on the design of your resume as it is the first thing your employer, whether on paper or in electronic form.

The most commonly made mistake in resume design include using templates that are already available in Microsoft Word. While these templates provide a quick, easy to follow tools to create your resume, they are outdated, and they will make your resume appear generic and uninviting. Additionally, these templates, while well formatted in Microsoft Word, will not translate well when emailed or uploaded to job search engine web sites.

Second most commonly made mistake in resume design is inclusion of graphics on the page. Your picture and/or any other graphics are not appropriate for a resume. Including anything outside of plain text will make you stand out in a way that makes the employer think you are not taking yourself seriously as a professional, and this is certainly not the first impression you want to make.

You can find samples of resumes on the Internet; search for resumes by your industry to find the templates that make most sense for the job you are seeking. Than work on a blank page to replicate the look and feel of the resume you like.

The following are basic formatting rules for your resume:
1.Limit the length of the resume to two pages.

2.The page should have one-inch margins, top and bottom, right and left.

3.Use left justification only as a rule, do not center the content of your resume.

4.The font and font size should be consistent.

5.The bullet points should be basic - use circles or squares, but never any symbols that may not translate well when you email your resume to your potential employer.

6Headlines can be in all caps; the remaining text should not have special formatting.

7.Do not underline any of the information in your resume. In the world of Internet driven job applications, underlining in a document implies a web link.

8.The font size for headlines should not exceed 14 points; the remainder of the text in the resume should not exceed 12 points.

9.Use the Tab key instead of the Space bar to create spaces between the text in your resume.

As a last formatting check point, ask your friends or your family for help in reviewing your resume. Send the resume file via email to a few of your friends and ask them to review the resume and make sure nothing seems out of place.

Print out the resume on paper and review to make sure that margins are accurately set, and that the content doesn'’t appear crowded on the page. Keep in mind when it comes to your resume, sleek simple appearance, and great writing, will get you the job you are seeking.

If you have a long professional career, focus on the last three to five jobs, but use the profile or summary at the beginning of the resume to highlight the number of years you have spent working, or the number of years you have spent in a certain industry, acquiring specific skills.

By Paul Hata

One of the biggest concerns in creating a resume has to do with your professional experience. Before you begin your resume, consider the following questions.
- What is your career objective?
- Are you changing careers or looking for professional growth?
- What experience have you had so far that will help in meeting your professional goals?

To get started in developing your resume, list all of your previous experience, in chronological order, starting with your latest job on a piece of paper. List the dates of employment, your job title, the full company name and the location of your employment.

Now, consider just how much experience you have had. In recent years, it has become more commonplace to change jobs more frequently and not build your career in one place.

As such, it is possible that someone with ten years of professional experience following college has had over three jobs. That doesn'’t seem all that much to include on a resume, right?

Consider someone with over 30 years of experience. It is important to set limits on what you include and what you can freely exclude from your resume under your professional experience.

Ideally, your resume should not exceed two pages. Depending on the type of jobs you have held and your responsibilities, having only two pages doesn'’t account for a lot of space. The best practice for listing your experiences is not to exceed the most recent five jobs you have held.

Again, keep the mind the length of the resume when you are deciding on the number of jobs you will list if your last five jobs and their accompanying responsibilities will take over one page alone, than consider narrowing the experience down to the three most recent positions you had.

Also, consider the time you spent at each organization you have worked for list up to the last ten to fifteen years of experience. It is not necessary to list every job you'’ve ever had to showcase your qualifications and years of experience.

If you have a long professional career, focus on the last three to five jobs, but use the profile or summary at the beginning of the resume to highlight the number of years you have spent working, or the number of years you have spent in a certain industry, acquiring specific skills.

When listing your experiences, it is important that you do so in chronological order without skipping any of the jobs you have held. While you may feel that certain jobs are not particularly complimenting to your current career objective you should not avoid listing them on your resume.

Work on highlighting the responsibilities that are transferable across various industries. Leaving any unexplained gaps in your work history will raise questions by your potential employer thus don'’t create those gaps on your resume by listing your experience out of order or by skipping jobs you have had.

Finally, make sure that your cover letter accounts for any additional qualifications you would like to bring to the attention of your potential employer that you didn'’t include on the resume. Your resume should be concise, well written, and sell you as the best candidate for the job. Just remember that it is quality over quantity that counts.

By Paul Hata

As a health care professional, creating a resume for your field is somewhat different that all other corporate professional resumes.

There are certain elements of professional experience and education that play a significant part in the health care industry and make a difference in attracting the employer’’s attention. Therefore, to compose a winning resume as a health care professional, you will need to consider and include the following information:

1.Indicate how many patients or clients you have taken care of. Whether you are a nurse in a large hospital, or manage financial accounts at the small doctor’’s practice, it is important to indicate to your future employer how many people you have dealt with on daily basis, and how you have addressed any concerns that arise from taking care of people in sensitive situations.

2.List all of the training that you have acquired, beyond your education that makes you qualified for a specific area in the health care industry. Beyond the training you have completed that is job specific, consider listing any other training in management, communications, ethics, etc.

While this type of training may not be required for the job that you are seeking, it does show your employer that you have transferable skills and that you are interested in understanding the broad aspect of the industry.

3.Certifications and licenses are a critical aspect of the health care industry. Make sure that you list all your licenses, and their valid dates. Additionally, consider any programs, continuing education courses, or government regulations that you are compliant with; all of these items should be included in your resume.

Not only do they highlight your qualifications, but also provide assurance to your potential employer that you meet all the requirements of the city, state and federal agencies in order to be employed in your field.

4.Your professional summary must list a clear professional goal. It is important that you demonstrate to your employer that you have a vast knowledge of the health care industry, and that you have a career path in mind. If you are new to health care, use the professional summary to highlight your education and practical work that qualifies you for the position you are seeking.

5.Use industry jargon, but exercise caution. Don'’t try to replace certain medical terms with common phrases. Feel free to demonstrate your knowledge of the field by using terminology that is specific to health care. However, don'’t over use the same terms, or phrases, and don'’t use jargon excessively. While you want to give an impression that you know what you are talking about, you don'’t want to overuse jargon and turn off the recruiter that may be the initial contact for your resume review.

6.Technical skills are necessary, and therefore, you should list them on your resume. Indicate your skills in specific software programs, and don'’t be shy about making your computer literacy known to your employer.

Health care industry relies heavily on technology and employers actively look for candidates with specific computer skills. Make sure that your resume clearly outlines your technical qualifications.

By Paul Hata

The most difficult and time consuming section of any resume is the listing of your work experience, no matter the level you have reached in your professional career. If you have just graduated college and don'’t have any full-time professional experience, you are concerned if your part time job and summer internship are enough to get your foot in the door.

If you are a seasoned professional with extensive work experience, you are worried how to fit all of your hard work on only one page. If you are changing careers, you are unsure which skills best showcase your qualifications.Listing work responsibilities on our resumes doesn'’t get easier as our career progresses. The key is to consider your career objective and prioritize your work in accordance to your goals.

When people are asked about work responsibilities, they have a tendency to disclose the routine items first. This method can be a costly mistake for listing your professional experiences on your resume because it leaves all of the important and key qualifications at the bottom of the list.

To avoid falling into this practice, first put together a list of your responsibilities on a sheet of paper. For your initial draft, don'’t worry about how you are phrasing each statement just make a list of everything that you do in your current or have done in your previous jobs.

Once your list is completed, consider all of the responsibilities you have included. What are the three most important items on the list for each job? How do those items relate to your career objective? Are there any other responsibilities you have listed that better support your career objective than the three you picked as the most critical to your job? You have to consider all these questions in order to prioritize your job descriptions on your resume.

Begin each description with a power word, such as managed, developed, communicated, etc. Make sure that the statements you list first quantify your achievements don'’t be afraid to list sales figured, customer acquisition rates, budget and timeline successes, or any other figures which help put your responsibilities in a context of the business/field you are working in. Also, these statements should be aligned with your career objective.

If you want to get a job in project management, letting your employer know that you managed a team of 20 people will effectively highlight your qualifications. It is important to quantify your job description statements on your resume; however, as a word of caution, do not quantify all statements, just one or two that are most critical to your job and are goal driven. This shows your employer that you think in terms of exceeding your goals. All subsequent descriptions of your responsibilities should support the first one or two items on your list.

Prioritizing doesn'’t only apply to your job descriptions, although it is the most commonly disregarded element in this particular area of the resume. Achievements and qualifications are often misrepresented because they are not ordered properly.

Same rules apply consider which of your achievements and your qualifications are most complimentary to your career objective, and list them first. For example, if you are applying for a job in customer service, list your communication skills before your computer skills. While both are important, your communication skills are more in line with your career objective, and therefore should take priority.

As a final test, put yourself in the shoes of your employer. Cross-check the job description and make sure that you address the qualifications required for the job with the information on your resume. Let your potential employer know you have what they are looking for, and you'’ll be sure to make a great impression.
