Everyday thinking and performance involves communicating, making decisions, and staying current with relevant business and social activities. Here is a little-known occurrence that can easily derail our normal functioning.

By Brian Walsh

Clear thinking is crucial for carrying on a conversation, making decisions, and practically everything we do. Thinking can be clouded by a host of conditions including stress, dehydration, and poor nutrition. Now, studies reveal that rejection and criticism have a significant influence on how well a person thinks.

In a series of experiments at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, participants were exposed to a series of situations that resulted in manufactured rejections. They were given before and after intelligence and analytical skill tests. The researchers were amazed to learn that the intelligence scores plummeted by 25% on average. Their analytical reasoning skills declined an average of 30%.

We are born with the fear of abandonment. As humans, one of the most powerful drives we have is to connect, and be accepted. When rejected, some people’’s self-esteem tends to become unstable. A person’’s self-esteem is forged in the first seven or eight years of life. Low self-esteem is fostered in an atmosphere of conditional love. It robs an individual of the psychological defenses needed to ward off the slings and arrows of life.

One of the most vital responsibilities of a parent is to cultivate a robust self-esteem in their children. It is unconditional love that nurtures healthy self-esteem. So equipped, an individual can brush aside the occasional rejection that is bound to occur.

During research at Montreal’’s McGill University, social psychologists found that people under stress tend to pay more attention to frowning faces than smiling faces. Like the Law of Attraction suggests, whatever you put your energy, focus, and attention on, you will attract more of. A person’’s depressed mood will filter out positive situations, and cause more focus on social threats like rejections and criticisms. These in turn will feed muddled thinking. This downward spiral can be reversed through intervention.

The McGill researchers tested telemarketers, a group that experiences a fair amount of rejection. Participants were exposed to a series of video games that exposed them to either smiling faces or flowers. After just one week, those who played the smile game had 17 percent less of the stress hormone cortisol in their system, and a 68 percent increase in sales!

Since emotions are linked to survival, they have neurological message priority. Simply stated, negative emotions can inhibit cognition, memory, and generally fracture human wholeness. In his book, Walsh outlines several methods people can employ to change their destructive patterns so that they focus more on positive stimuli.

Reality TV and the pop-culture phenomenon that has gripped the world over the last 10 years has brought us such celebrity superstars as Bubble, Chico and the unique Jade Goody. Has celebrity lost all its credibility and did it ever have any?

By Patrick Omari

A celebrity is the term used to describe someone who is famous and attracts attention from the general public and the world’’s media. Traditionally, a celebrity would gain the title by his or her work or achievements in a particular field of expertise. Actors, musicians, politicians and inventors have all become celebrities in the past. However, as we fall deeper and deeper into the cesspool of the 21st century a new celebrity has arrived - the nobody.

Cultural commentator Daniel Boorstin stated in his 1961 book, The Image: A Guide to Pseudo-Events in America, that a celebrity was “a person who is known for his well-knownness”. Nearly fifty years later and his theories of pseudo-events are still as apt today with the current trends of reality TV and celebrity culture. So where did we go wrong, and when did it become so easy to become famous?

In 1968, prominent artist Andy Warhol commented on the state of society and its infatuation with celebrity when he exclaimed that ‘’everyone will be world-famous for fifteen minutes.'’ This brave claim may have seemed a little misguided but the previous forty years have proved his point emphatically. However, I think he may have been a bit ambitious with the length of time as some stars of reality TV arrive and disappear in the blink of an eye.

So we arrive in 2008 with the words of both Warhol and Boorstin ringing in our ears. We sit down, we turn on the TV to see what audio-visual treats await - every channel fills our living rooms with ‘’real people'’ doing ‘’real things'’. As you peruse the glossy TV magazines notice the amounts of reality shows that now dominate our screens - Wife Swap, X-Factor, American Idol, Britain’’s Got Talent and the reality pioneer Big Brother. The concept itself of Big Brother is everything that Boorstin and Warhol warned us about, ‘’normal'’ people are thrust into the limelight to be mocked, glorified, vilified and humiliated in equal measures. And we lap it up.

Since Big Brother first hit the UK’’s screens in the summer of 2000, there have been nine series (including the current one) and nine winners. The ‘’housemate'’ that is eventually voted BB Winner 2000 and whatever is not necessarily the most likely to gain fame and fortune from their appearance on this cultural phenomenon. The champion of Big Brother earnings so far with estimated earnings of three million pounds, entered the house in 2002, finishing a lowly 4th before embarking on a successful career in television, fitness DVDs and perfume. Jade Goody is the epitome of the pop-culture phenomenon that the UK will continue to see if reality television continues to dominate the ratings.

To achieve the financial security and national fame that Goody now possesses, she had to perform some pretty embarrassing acts while on BB3, as it was often called. The immature 21 year old was constantly belittled by her housemates and embarrassed herself with her apparent lack of basic intelligence and knowledge. Goody was famous for misinformed comments including ‘’Do they speak Portuganese in Portugal? I thought Portugal was in Spain'’ and ‘’I knew Lynne was from Aberdeen but I didn'’t realise Aberdeen was in Scotland'’. Stupidity and a lack of pride had quickly become Jade Goody’’s most profitable asset, and she was set to milk it for all its worth.

Goody reentered the Big Brother House in 2007, but this time as a fully-fledged celebrity in the show’’s spin-off Celebrity Big Brother. She had grown into a national treasure in some people’’s eyes, a real story of rags to riches, a modern day fairytale. Goody’’s decision to take part damaged her reputation immeasurably as she became the centre of a racism row amidst comments made about Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty.

Goody’’s career appeared to be coming to an end as her perfume was withdrawn from certain shops and her public perfection had reached its lowest point. As Boorstin and Warhol hinted towards, the public’’s attention span continues to dwindle allowing Goody to regain her place on the celebrity merry-go-round. Voted third most pointless celebrity behind Paris Hilton and Chantelle Houghton (?), Goody has announced the launch of a second perfume as well as a re-release of her autobiography in 2008 so we can expect to see even more of this pseudo-event for many years to come. Fifteen minutes of fame? If only.

It can be a serious challenge figuring out what you want to do with your life and where you want to go. That path of higher education you choose in college will most likely lead you to the career of your future. Not always, but most of the time. This is why we try to select wisely. We want the major that prepares us for the field of our choice after graduation. However, don’t always make assumptions. Just because you heard something once or saw something on a television show, doesn’t make it realistic. The prudent route is to investigate things on your own. This way you’ll know where an English degree leads or what psychology careers can be attained after graduating with a degree in psychology.

By Joshua Uebergang

Sally walks into a room full of high-flying executives. She scans the room with her eyes and sees the executives dressed in expensive suits, sipping champagne, and mingling amongst each other. As she enters the room, she can'’t help but feel “different” to the executives.

She feels the executives are an entire class above her. Maybe it is the executives'’ suits while she is just wearing a basic top and skirt that is making her feel “below standard”. Maybe she has this strange difference because she does not know the executives very well and she feels socializing with them is therefore difficult. Or maybe she has what is known as the inferiority complex.

In 1912, a psychologist by the name of Alfred Alder wrote a book titled The Neurotic Character. His research in this book founded a popular area of psychology known as the inferiority complex which is a term used to describe a sense of inferiority an individual feels about oneself towards other people. It revolves around social status, power, ego, and dominance. You will have an inferiority complex when you feel inferior and think that other people are better than you.

Sally in our example is likely to feel inferior if she thinks the executives are better than she is. Her inferiority has nothing to do with not knowing the executives or being different. Dressing differently, not knowing anyone while everyone else knows each other, and having a less prestigious job does not mean she is inferior. Rather, her interpretation of this situation that makes her feel “below standard” creates her inferiority.

An inferiority complex can arise when you experience an imagined or conditioned feeling of inferiority. As is the case for most people, it is a combination of imagination and subtle conditioning. You would feel inferior when an event takes place which makes you feel less than others (conditioning aspect) and your creative imagination (imagination aspect) would “blow out” your understanding of the event beyond what would seem reasonable to another person.

The conditioning aspect in Sally’’s example is her actually being different to the executives. She is not wearing the same clothes as the executives nor is she “a part of the group”. The imagination aspect for Sally is her clothes are below their standards, the executives are better than her, the executives want nothing to do with her because of her difference, plus a lot of other possibilities she is likely to think.

If you feel inferior when talking to people or even when you'’re not around people, I highly advise you to get this problem sought out in your life. It is liberating to no longer feel inferior and to be able to happily have conversations with people.

Is psoriasis contagious? For skin disorder sufferers, not only is the pain depressing, so is the appearance of their skin. People with psoriasis often feel a tremendous financial burden in treating their disorder. There simply isn’t a nice way to put it. Medications for anything have reached an epidemic high cost. The cost of treating severe psoriasis isn’t any different. Dealing with any chronically, painful condition often results in depression. Severe psoriasis doesn’t have to be allowed to take over a person’s entire existence. In addition to aids for depression, an all natural skin treatment will help as well. You don’t have to be ashamed of it, because it can be healed with proper medication and medical assistance.

Deciphering the Meaning of Chinese Numbers

Specific digits have an entirely different meaning to Chinese than they do to westerners.

By Timothy Green

Many Chinese customs are centered around the belief in the power of certain numbers, and the superstitions surrounding digits in Chinese culture only takes second fiddle to the role of specific foods. The pronunciation of these numbers also reflects the Chinese’’s affinity with homonyms, where many digits are considered lucky or unlucky based on words that sound similar. This in turn, affects the entire Chinese economy, since folks here will not buy anything without careful consideration of the numerals involved.

Because of the auspiciousness of certain numbers, Chinese will often pay large sums for phone numbers, street addresses, residence floors, driver’’s license numbers, license plate numbers and bank account digits. For example, a personal license plate with the number eight can cost millions of dollars.

Lucky Numbers

The number 2 (ar in phonetic English) is a positive number to Chinese people. There’’s a Chinese saying: “Good things come in pairs.” It’’s common throughout the Middle Kingdom to see double symbols in product brand names, which means double happiness and double value. When Chinese exchange oranges during the Lunar New Year, they exchange two, four, or eight at a time.

The number 6, pronounced leo, sounds like the word used for “slippery,” which implies that everything will go smoothly. 666 is considered one of the luckiest numbers of all; it’’s displayed prominently in shop windows across the entire country, and people often pay extra to get a mobile phone number including this string of digits. In Guangzhou, a motorcycle license plate numbered AW666 was sold for 270,000. RMB, (roughly $34,000. USD)!

The number 8 in Mandarin is pronounced bah, which sounds similar to fah, meaning prosperity and good fortune. If you'’ve been to China, you'’ve probably noticed the unusual frequency of this esteemed digit used in the phone numbers of hotels, airlines and most major businesses. Telecommunication companies and car registration authorities charge extra for each number 8. For example, the Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza in Shanghai has the phone number 6252-8888. Northwest Airline’’s number is 6279-8088; China Travel Services is 6247-8888.

In Chengdu, China, the telephone number 8888-8888 was sold for $270,000. USD. The Summer Olympics in Beijing are scheduled to open 8/8/08, at 8 P.M.

The number 9, pronounce jeo, is also a homonym for the word “everlasting.” To the Chinese, it signifies friendship, love, and long life.

The Unluckiest Number

Number 4 (sih) sounds like the word “death,” and is therefore considered a bad omen. Many numbered product lines skip the 4, e.g. Nokia cell phones do not have a series beginning with a 4, and most residential buildings skip all numbers with 4, e.g. 4, 14, 24, 34, and 40 - 49 floors. The airlines, trains and buses all bypass this unfortunate number.

Number 14, pronounced shir sih, sounds like “ten die.” But it can also be said as ee sih, literally “one-four.” Another common way to say one, is yaow. Thus, 14 can be said as yaow sih, literally meaning: “want to die.” Not a favorite!

Lastly, research has revealed that more Chinese are likely to die from heart attacks or heart disease on the fourth of the month, obviously due to the superstition related stress evoked by the unlucky number, which in turn, triggers cardiac deaths.

Well, I'’ve covered the basics in lucky and unlucky numbers, but like most things in China, numbers and their meanings are extremely deep-rooted, with many nuances and complexities involved. Consider this a quick crash course. Chinese numerology dates back to the first century A.D. when Emperor Fu His discovered a tortoise shell said to contain a magic number square, which led to the development of I Ching, Feng Shui, Nine Star Ki, geomancy, and Chinese astrology and numerology. Volumes could be written on the subject, and I'’ll leave that to the mystics and academies.

By Jim Brown

In the olden times, women never had to work to put food on the table. Of course, they took care of the household and the children as well as other chores like the washing and the cleaning. The duty of earning money to buy food and to pay for expenses though rested solely on the father of the family.

Currently, more and more women are advancing their careers to help in earning money for the family. In fact many high positions in the corporate world are being held by women even the position of ruling the nation in some countries. Though many men are more open when it comes to issues like these and have allowed their wives to pursue their careers, there are still questions raised as to whether children are better off if their mothers stay at home to be a full-time mother.

I have been raised by a mother who sacrificed her career to rear me into the person I am today. I have to admit that I consider myself very lucky indeed to have a full-time mom who was always there whenever I needed her; during the times I was sick, when I needed her to tutor me with school work, when I had a very important game to cheer me on and when I was in a special school play to give me a standing ovation.

If my future husband could just provide our daily needs, I would definitely want to follow in the footsteps of my mother. I would want to be hands on in raising my children and not leave it to some nanny. I have noticed that mothers who chose their family over the careers had lesser problems with their children and had a closer relationship with them. Though there are also numerous working moms whom I truly admire for the way they have budgeted their time between career and family, still managing to raise beautiful children.

But I have to admit that since we are experiencing hard times, sometimes we need to be practical. How can you give your child the best that life has to offer if the money your husband is earning is not quite enough. I suppose for women who are in such a situation it is all a matter of time management. What is more important is the quality time and not the quantity.

In my case though, only time will tell if I do get the chance to be like my mother.

By Joshua Uebergang

From the time of elementary school, we have all found ways to define our relationships with other people. For some, this meant telling another one that they were your best friend, or that you would be friends forever. What was the significance of this definition, not only in having to define what a best friend was, but also in showing who your best friend should be?

Having best friends has been defined in our society because of the need to make connections to other people on deeper levels. When something goes wrong in your life, you can turn to a best friend first in order to get things straight again. No matter what is happening, a best friend becomes important because of their ability to reach you on levels that others may not have been able to.

According to several psychologists, it has been stated that a best friend is one who can help with behavioral and personality development. This specifically means that those who were able to connect to others often would find themselves benefiting on several levels. The first was in ways of expressing themselves with what was occurring. The response was often a mutual expression or respect. The overall abilities of the individuals were a creation of understanding of behaviors and personal needs, allowing the other person to grow and develop new levels of importance.

On the lowest level of understanding a best-friend is the requirement that most will define friendship by. This means that there is a mutual exchange of doing things for each other. However, this is a lower interpersonal understanding of interactions between the two individuals. The importance of a best friend moves beyond this commitment of support and the need to do things for the other person.

Beyond this physical need for friendship are also emotional and mental exchanges that are known to be important for a friendship. Having the ability to connect on these deeper levels, by opening up to another person, releasing different energies, and creating mutual feelings of expression give those who are in a friendship the ability to explore what is occurring through different levels of understanding.

For those that understand that life is not perfect, a best friend can often come in handy to balance out situations. Typically, a best friend will not be afraid to jump in at the site of danger or downfall in order to lift the other person back to their feet and push them into the area that is needed. By defining a best friend, this particular job description of having the “other person’’s back” is automatically understood as part of the partnership that is being built.

In order to be a best friend, or to define a best friend, it is important to understand what is needed as well as what you should do in the relationship. Typically, it is said that best friends are not found on words alone, but also on the actions that show the intent of the person. Best friends are then defined not by needing this definition, but instead by demonstrating loyalty, positive regard, honesty and support.

Having a best friend in any kind of relationship, whether it be with a loved one or an acquaintance allows for new demonstrations of exploration on personal and behavior levels to be met. It also allows for levels of expression and openness to be a stronghold in the relationship. The difference between an acquaintance and a best friend is the commitment, loyalty and strength that are provided. Whether it is your dog or your partner, having a best friend is one of the strongest connections that can be made.

Outlines how to improve yourself psychologically and talks about how healthy it can be for you.

By Daniel Alan

People are usually afraid of negative things. They are afraid of self-improvement because of this fear. Psychological self-improvement may help you in this situation.

In psychological self-improvement, The best way to remove this fear is to understand that life is always in the cycle of ups and downs. No one is permanently up or permanently down. Remember that no one can avoid these ups and downs even the most envied Hollywood stars.

What we should do about these downs is to learn from it and not to avoid it. We should learn how to handle our problems for our psychological self-improvement.

Problems affect us every day. These problems bring us misery due to the fact that we have feelings. We should never loose hope in figuring out solutions to these problems. All we need is to learn how to overcome it and not to be overcome.

Problems can never be overcome but we can learn from them. This is where Psychology plays an important role.

Psychologists say that we should always be careful in our decisions concerning our problems. We should handle our problems properly and learn how to deal with it. Learning from mistakes helps us in preparing ourselves for psychological self-improvement

There are a lot of myths about every event in our lives is due to pre-determined reason. Another belief says that what we encounter in our lives today is our preparation for other things that may come in our lives. To understand what may happen to us in the future, we must learn from the present.

With all that, it is also true that the unexpected can happen anytime. However, you should keep in mind that a psychological self-improvement is not always for the worse and consequently, you must never let go of a chance, because you are afraid to take the risk.

Remember that, from time to time, something has to happen in order to free you from monotony, so you shouldn'’t be surprised if, at a certain moment in time, instead of being afraid of change, you desire it with all your heart.

If there are some things that hinder you from going on, here are some tips to help you move forward:
Just think of the positive impacts results from the psychological self-improvement. Know important they are and reflect on how to increase them, by adding some other good aspects, which need certain assistance.

Try to picture somebody else in your situation, as picturing ourselves in a less desirable position, always looks more dramatic than it really is. If you realize that the other person can handle the change, you can be sure you'’ll be able to handle it as well. This is a good psychological self-improvement.

Think of the worst situation that can result after the self-improvement. Try to find various solutions to it. Reflect on how much you can loose, if the worst happened, and how important those things are to you. If you find more than one reasonable solution, you are safe and the self-improvement can'’t be stronger than you are!

Self-improvement is not bad at all. All we need is to learn how to handle some negative changes. We should also reflect from it to learn and use it in the future events that we may encounter. This could be your ultimate psychological self-improvement.

Which life do you lead? Do you consider your life to be constructive or would you describe it as destructive to you and all around you. Both result from a chain reaction, one leading to a downward spiral and the other leading to an upward spiral.

Living a Destructive Life

What do you remember about your childhood, early adulthood? Is it failing exams, being told off for not going to school, failing your driving test, leaving your first job because you kept making mistakes and thought they would probably sack you anyway?

This perception of your early life can only lead to a negative self image. Your subconscious mind constantly focuses on these negative situations. When a new situation comes into your life, say you get a new job; your subconscious gets to work analyzing this new set of information. It takes it apart and compares it to what has gone before.

He only stays a maximum of 18 months in a job so will have to move on in a year or so.

He had trouble with the boss in most past jobs so will have trouble with this one.

He got on with colleagues for the first six months then relationships went downhill so will have problems with colleagues by the end of the year.

Your subconscious mind does not rationalize - it simply takes the facts that have gone before and acts on them. In this case it sees a new job as something temporary and tells your conscious mind that you should expect all of the problems you have had before.

Truthfully, the only difference between you and constructive life, destructive life experts is time. If you'’ll invest a little more time in reading, you'’ll be that much nearer to expert status when it comes to constructive life, destructive life.

This leads to a negative perception of your job. A negative perception leads to lack of confidence, lack of motivation and ultimately depression. What chance does your new job have - none! This will impact on your wider life making it harder and harder to get what you want in life - so you sink deeper and deeper into depression.

Living a Constructive Life

What do you remember about your childhood, early adulthood? Is it playing with friends and siblings, holidays you have enjoyed, getting a mention from your teacher because you took an injured dog you found in your garden to the vet, getting your first job…?

This person’’s subconscious mind is very busy! Busy relating new situations to all the good things that have gone before! If this person decided to set up their own business their subconscious would be saying something like this:

Well this is new but I have been successful in my career so far so I will just use those skills and experience to succeed in my business.

I will have to find new customers but that is OK because I have always been very good at developing customer relations.

Once I am up and running I will need new staff but that will be fine because I have always got on well with the people reporting to me.

What do you think is happening in this person’’s life? Because they are focusing on success, they are looking forward to achieving it. This makes them feel motivated, which in turn leads them to take action. This action gets results so they feel more motivated (and happy!) and so it goes on.

Which life are you leading?

Hopefully the sections above have contributed to your understanding of constructive life, destructive life. Share your new understanding about constructive life, destructive life with others. They'’ll thank you for it.

By James Stinson

A relationship without open communication will inevitably give way to deception. There is no grey area. It is better to hurt another with open communication than to betray with deception. You will find that even the act of open communication prevents deeds that would normally be performed under the veil of dishonesty.

A relationship is a gentle lowering of individuality or Ego. A free flow of ideas, perceptions even insecurities should come to the surface and be discussed. In the ideal environment, no taboo or perceived craziness is outside the limit of open discussion. All taboos are society’’s programming anyway- which is far from open at the present time. Even governments and companies have not recognized the power of open communication with their people.

To suddenly start being open after a long period of hiding is far more difficult than being open on a regular basis. But inevitably this line has to be crossed, and accepted. An environment suitable for revealing all is the first stage of open communication. Both parties must be willing to hear anything and refrain from allowing their Ego to jump into the fray; to judge, feel hurt or angry.

Next comes regularity. At first the impulse to be dishonest “in order to protect someone” will be strong. This is the first stage of dishonesty that is justified has being beneficial to the other person. Slowly this nurtures roots of deeper deception. If the root is cut while it is young and even little white lies are absorbed by the light of open communication - no lie can ever grow.

Does this mean one can share all thoughts, all ideas, or beliefs with anyone? It should. For now you'’d get locked up or thrown into an institution as a madman. But there will come a time when society’’s contract with dishonesty and illusion gives way to a deeper understanding of open communication. In the meantime there can be a selective agreement of open communication between a single couple, a single family, a single company and it’’s employees, between a single government and it’’s people before finally the whole world accepts the idea as norm.

Everyone may not like the idea at first, preferring to hang on to the perceived power that comes through lying. It is they who will prefer to go to war when the truth has been set free. Granted, there is a fine line between loose lips that sink ships and open communication in the spirit of greater love between two enlightened individuals. Open communication does not mean running the mouth like a loose cannon. It means selectively choosing your words in a way that will bring about greater harmony between yourself and another party. And avoiding the acts that would disrupt that harmony whenever possible. And in the rare cases where a controversial decision must be made in haste and a decision was made in error, it can quickly be discussed, accepted and learned from.

Most great tragedies begin with a small deception that gets cultivated over time. If you can learn to be open even when on the surface it appears that it will not serve you, over time you become the person that can always be depended on for the truth. And because the truth is a power sought from the depths of every Soul- anyone who possesses it will hold a position of great power. Respected, admired and even revered for their sincerity, and openness even in times when the truth is unpopular and their name risks being tarnished- they rise above the primitive contract of society and peer into a new world waiting on the horizon.

About The Author

James Rick Stinson 23 year old author of Garden of Life, avid meditator and personal development coach.
Unorganized serial killers, share a slightly different profile. These types of serial killers tend to have below average intelligent levels and are considered to be socially inadequate; often living alone and someone who does not date.

By Barney Garcia

Organized serial killers enjoy prolonging the pain and suffering of their victims. They tend to enjoy the power they obtain by controlling when and how a person dies. It is not uncommon for serial killers to torture their victims for several days in order to maximize the pleasure they get from this process. Most serial killers choose their victims at random, if they see an opportunity they will grab at it. However, most killers do have a preference for eliminating a certain type of individual, for example prostitutes, young men, children or the elderly. An organized serial killers actions are premeditated. Serial killers do not commit acts of passion. Organized serial killers will fantasize about the act until they can no longer get pleasure from just imagining it, and they carry out the killings in real life. Serial killers will take special care to survey the area to make sure they will not be caught before attempting to kidnap or attack someone. They tend to keep a close watch on the media, keep a clean house and drive a flashy car. They also leave a clean crime scene are more likely to dismember the body and are prepared to talk with police.

Unorganized serial killers however, share a slightly different profile. These types of serial killers tend to have below average intelligent levels and are considered to be socially inadequate; often living alone and someone who does not date. They are usually high school drop outs and have minimal interest in the media. They tend to keep a messy house and have poor hygiene. They tend to leave the body intact with a crime scene high in evidence.

There are seven types of motives that drive serial killers to kill. These include visions that the killer claims have come to them “guiding them to kill”, a desire to rid the population of a certain race or type of individual, hedonistic reasons; meaning the killer gets pleasure from the violence, lust; in which they kill for sexual gratification (whether the actual act of sex occurs or not), for thrill, for personal gain such as money or material goods, and power seekers, who like to control the death time of others in order to feel in control of their own lives.

Serial killers usually spread out their killings and are typically repeat offenders because the actually act they committed did not live up to their expectations. The killings tend to gain in severity as the killer becomes more experienced and are not stopped until they are jailed, or die themselves. Arrested serial killers who have received counseling and therapy have shown no improvements in their mental condition after treatment and these rehabilitation practices have even worsened the problem.

Scientists now believe that in the future there might be a cure for the defect in the brain on the medulla oblongata which is responsible for emotional reaction. While the technology, availability and ethical concerns are limiting this possibility right now, the theory is out there being worked on.

About The Author

Author Barney Garcia is a proud contributing author and enjoys writing about many different topics.
Serial killers grow up into people who kill other human beings as a source of pleasure. The reason for this is not completely understood, but is believed to be caused by neurological damage and psychological defects that lower reaction to emotional stimuli.

By Barney Garcia

This article does contain researched facts that are infact correct, however I am not a psychology expert and this information should not be used to solve crimes.

Serial killers have become a topic of interest to the general public, especially since the hype that has been brought about from horror movies. A lot of people are interested in why people become serial killers, or what common traits serial killers posses.

Interestingly, there are similar characteristics among serial killers that have been found out through study and research. It is important to note that there are two types of serial killers; organized and unorganized.

Serial killers grow up into people who kill other human beings as a source of pleasure. The reason for this is not completely understood, but is believed to be caused by neurological damage and psychological defects that lower reaction to emotional stimuli. Therefore, for a killer to be able to feel pain, joy, happiness, or other emotions, they must commits horrendous acts of violence that would be unthinkable to a healthy individual.

As children, the top most common behavioral characteristics shared amongst all serial killers include extensive day dreaming, compulsive masturbation, chronic lying, isolation, bed wetting over the age of twelve, rebelliousness, destroying property, nightmares, setting fires, stealing and cruelty towards other children. It is important to note that not all children who experience these things will turn into serial killers, it is only that the serial killers which criminologists have studied, have found these similar characteristics to be true. Almost all serial killers were sexually and physically abused as children and about half have of them had their fathers abandon their family before the age of twelve. It the other half of these cases where the father didn'’t leave, he was always controlling and abusive. Many serial killers tend to become highly interested in fetishism and sadomasochistic pornography at an early age. When serial killers are still at a young age and they are too small to inflict pain upon other humans, they get joy out of torturing insects or small animals.

It has be proven that most organized serial killers are white males between the ages of 25 and 30 years old, of average or above intelligence and are usually married with children. Despite their high intelligent levels they tend to do poorly in school and might have a hard time holding down a job.

About The Author

Author Barney Garcia is a proud contributing author and enjoys writing about many different topics.
