The history of the Venetian Mask is one which sounds as though it stems from fairytale or legend but which goes to show that sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.

Way back in the 13th Century, Venice was more than just a small city in Italy. It was a very important part of Italy and was known by the name of the Venetian Republic. This Republic was small, with a population in the region of 150,000 people. Nonetheless, the Republic had a very successful trade, which was ship building, and was able to produce one battleship in as little as thirty days. This was a very fast turnaround, made possible by the fact that the shipyards employed 15,000 of the local residents, a staggering ten per cent of the state’’s overall population. In addition to the shipyards, the Venetian Republic required workforces in all other aspects of daily life. The Republic was a well oiled machine which functioned smoothly and well and this meant that the citizens of the Venetian Republic were wealthy and successful. This wealth, luxury and extravagance, coupled with the beauty of the state, made the Republic very appealing to the rest of the world.

It was this wealth that was to bring about the tradition of the Venetian mask. Over time, the citizens of the Venetian Republic began to realise that if they concealed their identity they became able to carry out their daily lives in secrecy and without fear of retribution. With so much personal wealth in the state, people often found themselves making deals and agreements with other citizens outside of the eyes of the law. With the population as small as it was, many wanted to carry out such deals as these without other people knowing their business, and so the wearing of a mask became popular.

Once people began to see others wearing masks, it became apparent that they could hold additional benefits. When wearing a mask your identity is concealed and so your social status is not known to others. This allowed servants and business owners to be treated equally and prevented any form of inequality or prejudice. It also allowed all of the citizens of the Republic to have their say on matters which were important to them, allowing them to remain anonymous in the process. This was mutually beneficial to both the citizens and officials visiting the city, who were able to receive honest answers to their questions from the whole spectrum of residents. Soon, all of the city’’s residents were wearing masks to go about their daily lives.

This mutual benefit for all of wearing masks was not to last long though. It did not take long for people to start to take advantage of the concealment of their identity and to benefit from their anonymity. Knowing that there were to be no repercussions of their actions, as no-one could be identified, the society began to behave more lavishly and without fear. As a busy city with travellers and business visitors descending upon them daily, sexual promiscuity became common place and gambling was known to be occurring all through the day and the night, all over the city. In fact, gambling was even occurring in convents and was undertaken by men, women and even children. Homosexuality was starting to spread throughout the Republic and was not condemned there as it was in the rest of the country. Women were able to flaunt their sexuality in revealing clothing and engaged in promiscuous behaviour. Even those who had taken religious vows, such as monks and nuns, were undertaking the same activities as the rest of the population, wearing fashionable outfits, gambling and prostituting themselves.

The capital of Italy, Rome, knew about the activities which were occurring in the Venetian Republic but for some time chose to ignore them as long as the Republic was continuing to make regular and substantial financial deposits. However, a decision was finally reached to ban the wearing of masks throughout the majority of the year, only permitting it in a three month period from the 26th December onwards. Over time this has been gradually lessened and is now more commonly associated with week long festivities known as Carnevale, or Mardi Gras.

How Diamonds Are Weighed And Classified For Clarity

Diamonds are measured in Carat Weight. One carat weighs 200 milligrams. If a diamond is referred to as four grains, this also means that it is a one carat diamond. The word Carat comes from the word carob. A carob is a bean that grows on a tree in the Mediterranean. In times past, if a diamond weighed the same as a carob bean, it was one carob, or one carat.

However, in the far east, where Carob trees do not grow, rice was used to measure the weight of a diamond. If a diamond weighed as much as four grains of rice, it was four grains - or one carat as we know it to be now. The majority of diamond purchases are for diamonds that are 1/3 of a carat.

Beware when shopping for diamonds that are already set or mounted. If more than one diamond is used in the piece, the tag on the jewelry will give the CTW or Carat Total Weight - it does not tell you the carat weight of each stone in the piece. You need to ask the jeweler for the total carat weight of the largest diamond in the piece to truly understand what you are buying.

Clarity is also an important aspect of a diamond, and it is important to know how to grade the clarity of a diamond before you buy one. It is actually quite easy to learn how to grade the clarity of a diamond. There are basically two things that you must understand: Diamonds with visual inclusions and blemishes, and those that are ”eye clean” meaning that there are no inclusions or blemishes that can be seen with the naked eye. From there, the clarity of a diamond is further broken down into subcategories.

Many people mistakenly think that diamond clarity refers to how clear it is. This isn”t so. Clarity actually refers to the internal and external imperfections of the diamond. The best diamonds, of course get a grade of FL or IF - Flawless or Internally Flawless - meaning that it is perfect. A grade of I-1, I-2 or I-3 means that the diamond is imperfect, with a grade of I-3 being the worst.

Other grades are VVS1 and VVS2, which means that the diamond is very, very slightly imperfect; VS1 and VS2, meaning the diamond is very slightly imperfect; SI-1 and SI-2, which means that the diamond is slightly imperfect.

With a little practice even a neophyte can learn to tell the quality of diamonds.

Evolution Of The Watch

The watch as we know it today came into being out of the necessity of portability in the shipping and navigation industry in the early 15th century. The problem they had was that while the latitude could be measured by looking at the stars, the only way to determine longitude was by comparing the midday time of the local longitude to a European meridian like Paris or Greenwich. This was a very unreliable way of doings things until John Harrison introduced the chronometer.

The first fairly accurate clocks used weighted pendulums, which by their very nature were of no use at sea or in a portable watch. The invention of the spring mechanism brought in the development of “pocket clockes” in Tudor England allowing clockmakers the ability to put a time keeping device in a small, mobile, container.

The very first pocket watch was created by Peter Henlein in 1524 and it is rumored that Henry VIII had one of these kept on a chain around his neck. These early watches only had an hour hand, the inaccuracy of the watches at this time made a minute hand useless. The evolution of the miniaturization process of these spring based designs allowed for the making of portable watches that would work at sea. The Waltham Watch Company founded in 1850 by Aaron Dennison pioneered the manufacturing of interchangeable parts and is still a top watchmaker today.

In the 1868 the first wristwatch was made by the Patek Philippe company, a joint venture of Antoinne Patek and French watchmaker Adrien Phillippe, the inventor of the keyless wind mechanism. It was considered an accessory for women until the 2oth century. Because of its exclusivity, luxury tag, low volume production and cost, Patek Philippe lost the market and lost much of its business. The Stern family took over the firm in 1929.

Patek Philippe remains a force in the quartz watch industry introducing not only the perpetual calendar, chronograph, and minute repeater but also the most complicated mechanical watch ever made. In 1989, the company created the Calibre 89, in celebration of their 150th anniversary. This watch has 33 complications including the date of Easter, a thermometer, a sunrise time, equation of time and more!

In the early 1900′’s, the wristwatch became popular with men due to the Brazilian inventor Alberto Santos-Dumont who wanted a more convenient way of checking time while in the aircraft he was working on. He approached his friend, Louis Cartier and asked him for a watch that he could read easier and Cartier designed a leather-band wristwatch for him that he never took off.

Because Cartier was a popular figure in Paris, he was able to sell these watches to many other men and by the Fist World War, officers in all armies were turning to the wristwatches because it was much easier in the battlefield to just look at a watch on their wrist than to have to reach in their pocket for a pocket watch.
Army contractors began issuing cheap, reliable, mass produced watches to artillery and infantry officers so they could synchronize their attacks. At the end of the war, these European and American veterans were allowed to return home with their wristwatches helping to make them popular among middle class Western civilian culture. Today almost everyone wears a wristwatch as a direct result of this introduction in World War 1.

Taking Care of Your Leather Shoes

You can make your leather shoes last as long as you want to keep them if you take care of them, but sadly most don”t know how. We live in a society now where it is much easier to just throw them out and buy a new pair.

Back in the day, most people owned only one pair of shoes and therefore had to take care of them out of necessity and they lasted for the life of the person! With the busy lifestyles of today many people just don”t take the time to care for their shoes properly and just take the easier albeit more expensive option of buying new ones instead. It really doesn”t take that much time or effort as well will show you.

When you first buy a pair of shoes you should always coat them with a weather proofing or sealer to prevent them from water and weather damage. The sealants usually come on a spray and you should use two to three coats to be sure they are covered properly. Be sure that the spray you choose has a waterproofing agent in it. Also, reapply the sealant every few months to guarantee protection and even more often if you use the shoes in harsh conditions.

Leather tends to shrink and get hard if it gets wet, so do your best to keep them dry. If your leather shoes do get wet, let them dry naturally unless you have done it deliberately to shape them to your foot. Your leather shoes will be much more comfortable if you keep them soft as they are intended to be. If your shoes do become hard you will need to use some wax or polish to make them soft again. Use clear shoe wax or even furniture wax and rub in lightly. If you buy expensive leather dress shoes, inquire at the store you buy them as to any special care they may need to keep them in perfect shape.

The best practice is to use natural products whenever possible to take care of your leather shoes. Harsh chemicals can be damaging to your leather shoes. If they are exposed to chemicals wipe them down as soon as possible with a cloth and warm water then dry and reapply a waterproof sealant.

The sock less Miami Vice look is still popular with some, but it is damaging to your shoes. Whenever possible where socks with your shoes, of course some leather shoes like sandals and many ladies shoes you would not want to wear socks. Overall, wearing socks will prolong the life of your shoes.

Always use a soft natural cloth and polish in a circular motion when you are polishing your leather shoes and rub the polish in well. You will not hurt the shoes and it will help to preserve them. Make sure to wipe way any excess polish as not to ruin your pants or socks from staining.

See, it really doesn”t take that much effort to make your shoes last.

Jonesing for the new Xbox 360?

Sooner rather then later gamers like you and I will get a chance to see Xbox 360 up close and personal at retailers nationwide.

In some surprising news Microsoft is planning to deliver Xbox 360 demo kiosks to retailers across North America as early as October 24th.

Although the Xbox 360 console doesn”t launch until November 22nd, Microsoft intends to get the console out to the public early with these demo Kiosks. Be sure to check your local retailers the week of October 24th.

Xbox 360 demo kiosks have been reported to appear in various Wal-Mart locations across the United States. The Xbox 360 demonstration units are hooked up to an HDTV LCD monitor and include a slot to insert a memory card to download promotional data.

Microsoft’’s Xbox 360 console will drop to retail chains on Nov. 22nd. The next-generation system is due for a global launch in North America, Europe, and Japan this holiday season and it is sure to be a huge hit.

The Xbox 360 kiosk contains playable demos of several games, including Microsoft’’s Kameo, Activision’’s Call of Duty 2, and King Kong. The demonstration disc also features movies of several titles, including Project Gotham Racing 3, Need for Speed Most Wanted, and Ghost Recon.

The buzz continues to build for Xbox 360 as retailers prep for the Thanskgiving launch. Numerous online retailers, including EBGames.com and Amazon.com, have pre-sold out of the $299 Core System and $399 premium edition.

Brick and mortar retailers like Best Buy, Circuit City, and Target, have set up promotional posters and take-home leaflets to start the marketing blitz.
Microsoft is expected to produce 1.5 - 2 million units for the Xbox 360′’s global launch. Most units are said to be allocated for the North American market, followed by Europe and Japan.

Microsoft has sold 22 million Xbox units across the U.S. on hits like the Halo franchise. Sony’’s PS2 leads the U.S. game market, while Nintendo’’s GameCube ranks third.

How To Choose A Swimsuit You Can Actually Wear

First off, you want to choose the right suit for your body type. For example, if you have wide hips or a little bit of a tummy you want to use blocks of color on one-piece suits constructed of darker fabric on the bottom and a lighter top half. You also want at least 15% spandex.

If you aren”t naturally or otherwise endowed in the top, choose a lightly padded halter or a bra style with an underwire. You can also divert attention away from a smaller bust by using suits with texture and small print designs.

If you have the opposite problem or blessing, whichever way you want to look at it, you can minimize a larger chest by wearing a darker top with a higher neck. Make sure that the suit offers the support you need and choose a wider bottom to give you balance.

For a small or petite frame, a one piece with thin vertical striping can help and you can make short legs look longer with a higher cut on the hip. If you have a boyish figure, you can give yourself the illusion of a smaller waistline with a tankini and if you have what you consider to be an overly round bottom you can wear a “skort”, the short and skirt combination to divert attention.

If you are one of the lucky ones with nice toned legs and shoulders, show them off with a bikini or a more revealing one piece.

These days, you can mix and match tops and bottoms when buying bikinis, so have fun with that. Just remember what you are going to use the suit for. If you plan on being in the water a lot you may not want a light thin material, unless you are an exhibitionist!
