But buying a used RV also has a lot of advantages, chief among which is that you can save the huge depreciation drop that happens when you buy a new motorhome and drive it off the lot for the first time. * Ask for all maintenance records that the previous owner has in order to verify how well and how often the motorhome has been serviced, and by who. Don”t let the owner tell you how often they have had it in for maintenance and accept it at face value. Make sure that they have the records to back it up.

* Plan on getting down and dirty to make a thorough physical examination yourself. If you are not a very experienced RVer, it’’s also a good idea to ask someone who is to accompany you and help you as you inspect the rig. An experienced set of eyes can find things that you would never see and if trouble areas are spotted it can be a great bargaining tool to use with the current owner if repairs will need to be done.

* Have an experienced RV mechanic inspect the motorhome if it has passed all of your previous tests. He will be looking specifically for engine, drivetrain and mechanical problems that could be coming up. You may actually have to pay someone for this step, but when you are talking about spending many thousands of dollars for the motorhome, it will be the best money that you could spend before the sale.

* Make sure that you know for sure what the motorhome is worth. You can go consult the Kelly Blue Book or nadaguides.com to get a general idea of what the true value is of the coach you are looking at. With this information in hand you don”t have to wonder whether or not you are paying too much for that RV.

Armed with the knowledge that you can gather by putting these ideas into practice, you should be very familiar with any used motorhome that you want to buy. It will help you know about all of it’’s possible weaknesses as well as it’’s positive points. It can help you plan in advance for the maintenance and service that you will have to do when it becomes yours. If you decide to buy your next motorhome from an RV dealer for whatever reason, you will need to do a little homework to make sure that the dealer you choose will be there to give the support and service that you will require after the sale is completed. Not all dealers are reputable and have good customer service records. So choose your dealer wisely and carefully in advance of the sale. Here are some things to look for when choosing a dealer:

* Give a call to the local Better business Bureau and ask about the number of complaints filed against a dealer. If there are several of them listed, then it’’s a good idea to cross this dealer off your list right away.

* Find out the background of the dealer. How long have they been in business? How long has the current owner had the company? Sometimes, RV dealers are sold and the great customer support that used to be there under the previous ownership disappears when the new owners take over. So be careful when dealerships have changed hands not too long ago.

* Talk to experienced RV and motorhome owners in the area and get their impressions of the dealers you are considering. There may be local RV clubs that can help you learn more about the dealers in your area. One thing is for sure though. If a dealer is not taking care of it’’s customers properly, you will hear the loud chorus of complaints from local RV owners loud and clear. Keep in mind that an isolated complaint does not necessarily mean that the dealer is not worth considering, but when you see a clear pattern forming of customer dissatisfaction, it’’s best to stay away from that dealer altogether.

* If all else checks out like you want, make a visit to the dealer and just walk through the lot and service area to get your impression of the way they run their business. If they seem to have only a few service techs and they don”t look very busy, this could be a sign that the dealer doesn”t have the best service personnel. So even if they take your coach in and try to fix it you could be making several returns just to have the same problem repaired. Also just see how you feel about the overall impression that you are left with at that dealer. Sometimes, it’’s something that we can”t even quantify, but if you just don”t get a good feeling there, it may be a good idea to look elsewhere.

Unfortunately, a common complaint in the industry is that RV and motorhome dealers seem much more interested in selling you a product than keeping it serviced properly after the sale. But by doing some advance homework you can help minimize these problems before they arise by choosing an RV dealer that will continue to support your motorhome long after the sale is completed.

In Part 1 and 2 of this article series we discussed several ways to get well-informed before making your decision on which motorhome to buy. Some of the ideas mentioned included reading past and current issues of RV magazines, attending RV shows, consulting industry buyers guides, visiting local RV dealers, and talking to several experienced motorhome owners.

But here are a few more tips on how to get well-prepared for the motorhome buying process and be comfortable that you are making the right decision:

* It’’s best to stay away from motorhome brands that are not well known and recognized in the industry. You may come across some great deals on relatively unknown motorhomes, but it’’s usually best to pass those up, especially if you are not very experienced yet as an RV buyer. The RV industry is still in a relatively early stage of growth and at this level there are always companies entering into the fray that are trying to make their mark and become an industry leader. But the problem with that is that you don”t know if they are even going to be around tomorrow or not. Just as quickly as they arrived on the scene, they can also flame out and go away, leaving you with a product that needs support, but no one to turn to. So it’’s best to stick with the major recognized brands that have been in the industry for a while. Even if they get swallowed up by another company, you will usually be grandfathered into the new arrangement as a customer.

* After you have filtered your list down to the handful of motorhomes that you like most both for features and liveability, now is the time to actually test drive them to make your final decision. It’’s amazing how many people buy RVs without having even test driving them at all beforehand. You may find that some models and brands just drive better than others and that should be a major factor in your final decision. If the dealer won”t let you test drive a coach before buying it, then they don”t deserve your business and you should look elsewhere. Of course, if you are new to motorhomes, make sure that you get some driving experience before test driving dealer coaches because you want to be able to focus clearly on how the coach performs on the highway rather than being too scared to notice.

In part 1 of this article we covered three ways to help do the homework necessary to make an informed motorhome buying decision. They are reading current and past issues of RV magazines, attending RV shows, and reading through the RV buyers guides by Trailer Life and Woodall’’s. But there is much more that you can do to get thoroughly prepared for making your motorhome purchase. Here are a few more ideas to consider:

* Visit the RV dealers in your area and get completely familiar with all the models on their lot that interest you at all. You can expect to be accompanied most of the way by the dealer’’s sales person and that is their job, but remember that they are most likely not unbiased in their recommendations and so take note of what they say but keep in mind that they aren”t necessarily impartial.

Also, very often you will have to go through a lot of motorhomes on each lot and before you know it you can get confused and no longer are able to remember the impressions that you had of each coach clearly. That’’s why it’’s a good idea to be organized about this investigative procedure and have a method of recording your findings and inpressions as you go for recall later on. A simple notepad can do wonders for this, or you may even choose to employ a camera, or even a video camera in the process too to help bring back to mind what you have seen.

* Talk to other motorhome owners who already have had some experience with the buying process recently and get their impressions, ideas, and recommendations too. This can be one of the best sources of unbiased, impartial consumer information that you can get, so try to talk to as many RV owners as possible, and gat as much input from them as you can. Again, taking notes as you go can be very important. RV owners are a talkative bunch as a rule so you shouldn”t have any problem getting very clear feedback from them on both motorhomes themselves and the dealers who sell them.

However, keep in mind that sometimes emotion can affect the recommendations made by some RV folks as well. Try to determine if they are reasonable in their expectations, or if they seem to be a little overly picky. Also give weight to how experienced they are with RVs. Those who have been buying and selling RVs for a long time will usually have the best information overall. But try not to comment much on what they say, just ask as many questions as you can. Then put together the responses you have received and look for clear patterns that can help guide your buying decision.

Buying a motorhome can be an exciting adventure, and as pleasurable or stressful as you want to make it. There are a lot of things to consider when buying a motorhome, and at times it can seem overwhelming. One way to accomplish this is to start reading RV magazines as thoroughly as you can. If you can get your hands on back issues that go back for a year or so, that’’s even better. Your goal is to bring your knowledge up to date with the progress of the industry.

* There is no substitute for actually physically inspecting and investigating the latest motorhome offerings. So RV shows are an invaluable source of information where you can walk through coaches from different manufacturers and get a feel for what appeals to you and what doesn”t. Usually there are RV shows taking place in a given area almost all the time, so just look online to find them and then plan ahead to attend. Even if you have to drive quite a distance, it’’s really worth it to get more comfortable with the whole motorhome shopping process. One warning though. Be sure not to let the RV sales people at these shows get you all excited and tempt you to jump in and buy a motorhome before you have completed your research and are well-informed. It’’s their job to make sales, but at this point it’’s your job to just say no.

* There are some great industry buyers guides available and the top two that come to mind are Trailer Life and Woodall’’s. Both of these companies also put out campground guides too, but every year they also publish a listing of the major RV brands and list the various floor plans and options available on each model. It’’s a great way to learn about each major brand of manufacturer and have an idea of what models they produce that you wish to look into further.

Everyone wants to save as much money as they can on the purchase of a new motorhome or RV. Especially since depreciation hits hardest at the first sale of any vehicle. So the more you save on the initial purchase price, the more you offset the depreciation loss. Here are the top three ways to save money on buying a new motorhome:

1. Expand your search well beyond your local area. When you confine your buying prospects to a certain region or locality this automatically limits the choices that you have when making a purchase. Modern shipping costs for vehicles has become much more reasonable too, so if you know what model you want you can actually make the purchase and have it shipped right to your door.

2. Wait till the end of the current model year to buy the motorhome that you want. Just as with the car industry, dealers have to clear out old inventory to make way for the new model year offerings when they are released. This can be a perfect buying opportunity for patient consumers. Just make sure that you know which model you want and how much you are willing to pay before starting to negotiate, and don”t let the dealer switch you off that model to something else on his lot without a very good reason.

3. Have your financing all arranged before you even begin looking for the motorhome itself. There are several lenders that specialize in motorhome loans, and you can even access many of them right online. Just go through the loan approval process first and get pre-approved for a motorhome in a certain price range. Now when you walk into the dealer, you are negotiating what is essentially a cash deal for them. This should enable you to realize significant savings on the purchase price right away.

It’’s so easy to buy a more expensive motorhome or RV than you originally needed or even wanted and RV dealers are all too often concerned most with making the high dollar sale rather than making sure that you get the RV that most fits both your needs and your budget. Of course, that is not always the case and some dealers are very customer oriented, but all too often they are only interested in making the sale at any cost.

That means that you have to take steps to protect yourself and keep your mind focused on what is best for your needs after the sale is made, and one of the best ways to do that is to have as much of the decision making process on auto-pilot before you ever even step onto a dealer’’s lot. How can you do that?

Well, advance preparation is one of the best ways to get where you want to go without letting your emotions take over. Emotions can cloud our thinking very easily, especially when we see that beautiful motorhome that has all the bells and whistles, and we think about how good we would look driving that expensive rig. Before you know it we are trying to rationalize buying that expensive RV that we really can”t afford in any way that we can, and often we find a way to do just that. But once the sale is made, buyer’’s remorse can set in very quickly when we realize that now we have to live with a poor buying decision from then on.

So to avoid that, try to bring ration and reasonableness to the decision making process as much as possible. Do your homework in advance and determine exactly how much motorhome your monthly budget will allow you to afford to buy, and then arrange your financing on your own so you will know what your target price range is before you begin shopping. Once you have that figure make a deal with yourself that you will not violate that figure no matter what. In fact, confine your research only to those motorhomes that fit within that price range.
